Annual Report
Dear Friend, The establishment of Staten Island’s Jewish Community Center in 1929 was in response to a need to create a central hub – a place for Jews of all ages and denominations to meet and share social, intellectual and recreational experiences. The leadership of the JCC, recognizing the needs of a quickly changing community, immediately opened its doors to the general community, and this remains the practice to this very day. The JCC has achieved all of its founders’ original goals and much more than they could have envisioned. It expanded from one site to three in 2007 including the Joan and Alan Bernikow flagship building. This, along with thirty other satellite locations, has helped the agency increase its services and programming exponentially. It has always responded to new challenges and opportunities such as services to those with special needs or immigrant groups. In addition, it is now the unofficial “town center” of Staten Island; located in the geographic center of the borough it is the facility of choice for joint programs, political forums, and multi-cultural gatherings. Through good times and difficult ones, the Jewish Community Center has constantly faced and met new challenges and continued to serve this community as one of the outstanding JCCs in the country. This past year, the Center faced its greatest challenge, Superstorm Sandy. Responding quickly to the needs of the community, the JCC led the way in forming a coalition of fifty organizations and formed Connect to Recovery. This new coalition became an immediate life-line to hundreds of families across the borough providing immediate financial assistance, meals, counseling, crisis intervention, legal advice and employment counseling. Under the umbrella of UJA-Federation of New York and with the support of Met Council, assistance continues to reach those affected months after the storm. Today, the Jewish Community Center functions as a human services agency committed to enhancing the physical, intellectual and spiritual wellness of the individual, family and community. We serve over 30,000 unique individuals from all walks of life, representing a wide diversity of ages, faiths, economic levels, races and cultures. We provide health, cultural and educational programs that serve the community at large, with special attention given to populations at risk. Membership and services are offered to both the Jewish and general community. Just as the Center did when it first opened its doors, it continues to provide the entire community with vital services and programs. We remain the “Center” of the community and are truly grateful for the support of our members, volunteers, donors, elected officials, staff and the community at-large. This is being coordinated by the JCC with assistance from over 50 cohorts including area synagogues, UJA-Federation partner agencies, FEMA, the American Red Cross and hundreds of local volunteers. Additional funding from New York City, AmeriCares, United Way and the Robin Hood Foundation also assisted us to serve over 1,000 residents that are most at-need. We have provided after school care scholarships, camp scholarships, hundreds of food packages, $21,000 in gift cards for food and/or home repair equipment, hours and hours of counseling, thousands of referrals for food stamps and other entitlements and so much more. The C2R department began with 2.5 staff members on November 1st and has grown to 22. Our case managers, outreach case assistants, social workers, food bank staff and program directors continue to provide Staten Island Hurricane Sandy survivors as they move through each stage of recovery. Community Considered the hub of the Staten Island community, the JCC provides numerous programs addressing the health, wellness and educational needs of our borough’s residents. Not only are youth provided with after school care, we also offer them the leadership skills they will require in the future. First Foot Forward - preschool for children with special needs. For more than 20 years, First Foot Forward has been a leader in quality education and services for this age group. Children/Families From tutoring to music, from sports to computers, the JCC offers a multitude of programs to youth and their families. Educational, recreational, cultural and social activities are available. Some programs are targeted specifically at youth while others are created for the whole family. Early Childhood Education - our Early Childhood department provides programs geared for children ages 3 months through 5 years in 4 sites throughout Staten Island. The program serves the entire community by offering daycare, preschool and Universal Pre-Kindergarten. Children gain a sense of pride, accomplishment and self esteem as they prepare for the educational journey that lies ahead. We cater to each child’s individual strengths and talents through fun, hands on learning experiences where children discover and grow in a loving, nurturing environment. STEM (Science/Technology/Engineering/Math) - prepared over 100 youth to become independent thinkers and problem solvers. Through innovative strategies and a “hands on” approach, children explored and gained experience in STEM areas of study as they practiced problem solving, teamwork and complex thinking. Activities included Mad Science, engineering workshops and projects, computer web design training, and Music & Math programming. Russian - serving Russian families with three generations living together. We offer programs that speak to each age group’s particular interest while creating a welcoming environment. Programs have included: Russian Culture Week - dance, music and children’s entertainment; Russian Tea Club; ESL for Russian speaking senior adults and the celebration of significant events in Russian history. Music Institute - over 40 years of professional music instruction provided by the Dorothy Delson Kuhn Music Institute to children as young as three years old and adults 70+. Though our city schools have been forced to cut back music programs, the JCC has worked very hard to provide scholarships so that musically talented children whose families are unable to afford music lessons can participate in classes and recitals. Thanks to private grant funding, we were able to introduce two new programs this year including a Social Studies through Music Program at PS 78 and a Music Fellowship program that assisted three underprivileged students in pursuing their musical career at a post-secondary college. Scouts - over 100 Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts meet regularly as part of the 50 year tradition of Scouting at the JCC. They learn about first aid, citizenship, the environment, participating in community service projects, camping trips and special events. Both scouting experiences include programs for children with special needs. Kidz Klub - housed at the Avis/South Shore and Bernikow buildings, it provides youth in elementary and intermediate school with a great after school experience and a safe and healthy environment while their families are at work. Aquatics - the JCC’s indoor pool is one of the few available on the island. Both youth and adults can participate in private and/or group lessons. Youth can also join competitive teams. Classes are offered to enable adults an exercise experience that is less taxing on their joints. Camp - over 800 children attended the Lillian Schwartz Day Camp at the Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds during the Summer of 2012. Located on 70 wooded acres with 3 pools, we provide a unique country-like camp experience for “typical” youth as well as those with special needs. Fitness - combating obesity through exercise and nutritional counseling. The JCC has received funding through two government agencies and a private foundation enabling us to provide youth and adults with different methods of taking control of their unhealthy lifestyle. Adults & Senior Adults As the city advises us that Staten Island will continue to experience the largest growth of the senior adult population in all of NYC, our agency continues to expand our programs to meet this challenge. The JCC prepares adults to enter this new phase of life with programs of interest to them (see CLLD next page). We also assist seniors who require specific services so they may age in place. Kosher Meals - delivered over 17,000 kosher meals to the homebound and frail elderly and approximately 20,000 congregate kosher meals at our two sites over the past year. Case Management - funding provided through the Department for the Aging (DFTA) and UJA-Federation enabled us to help families and older adults needing assistance in applying for government entitlement and benefit programs. Caregivers - for older adults with cognitive impairments and/or chronic physical impairments such as dementia or alzheimer’s disease. Counseling, support groups, respite and concrete services are provided to individual caregivers. We also assist grandparents who are the primary caregivers/guardians for grandchildren age 18 years or younger through this DFTA funded program. Senior Net - computer classes exclusively for seniors taught by senior volunteers. Senior Olympics - a collaboration with several local non-profits. The JCC assists in overseeing this annual event that provides friendly competition in sports as well as mental challenges to hundreds of adults over the age of 60. Safety Net - The JCC Safety Net Program provides assistance in securing services to help manage the physical and emotional well-being of the economically vulnerable Jews, older and other adults, through distribution of food packages, referrals for handyman services, assistance with benefits, entitlements, and housing stability through Safety Net linkage with the New York Legal Assistance Group. JCC Avis/South Shore and Stapleton Neighborhood Senior Centers - offer a wide variety of services to benefit body and mind. Activities include nutritional meals and education, monthly blood pressure screenings, computer classes, fitness classes taught by certified instructors, arts and crafts and ceramics classes. Case Assistance and Referrals are provided to all members to help resolve various personal matters pertaining to Food Stamps, Access-A-Ride, Rent and Utility Arrears, Medicare and Medicaid, and Eviction Prevention. The JCC Bridge to Care Program - located out of our Stapleton Neighborhood Senior Center. This is a new healthy aging program funded through the generosity of the Fan Fox and Leslie R. Samuels Foundation, Inc. which focuses on helping senior adults connect to better nutrition and healthcare. Fitness - from sitercise to yoga, from aqua zumba to treadmills. Classes are held for adults of all ages and abilities as we focus on the health and wellness of our community. Holiday Celebrations - celebrating Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, New Year’s and more. Sharing holidays is mentally and emotionally beneficial. CLLD - The JCC's newest program created for active senior adults is housed at our Bernikow facility. Nearly 3,000 adults over the age of 60 enrolled, exceeding even the highest predictions. Please see the next page for more on this amazing program. Pink Program - for breast cancer survivors to enable them to exercise safely while enhancing their overall health. It is the only breast cancer recovery program approved by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) on Staten Island. Group classes are tailored for different surgeries and adapted for all fitness levels. Partners in Caring (PIC) - provided one-on-one counseling, group counseling and workshops. Building upon our existing relationships with local synagogues, we worked together to identify individuals in need of support. In addition, we trained volunteers to assist in the above as well as recognize synagogue members in need of support. CLLD The vision for the new Innovative Senior Center, called the Center for Life Long Development (CLLD) and funded by the NYC Department for the Aging (DFTA) is creating a culture of empowered participants ages 60+ who are dedicated to developing enjoyable experiences for life long wellness. In addition to its own Board of Directors there are numerous working committees to actively engage participants in shaping, operating, and assessing the initiative to meet the needs of this age cohort. Nearly 3,000 individuals have enrolled in CLLD and approximately 950 are actively participating in classes each ‘semester’ with a daily meal and transportation available. CLLD partners with organizations throughout Staten Island to broaden the scope of programs and services such as College of Staten Island, SeniorNet, Snug Harbor, Richmond University Medical Center, Staten Island Physicians Practice, American Cancer Society, The Beatrice Victor Senior Olympics, and more. Environmental Stewardship The JCC has been committed to a path of environmental stewardship and sustainability since 2009. We strive to reduce our environmental footprint, reduce operating costs, educate and inform members and build partnerships in the community. To demonstrate its commitment an agency greening coordinator position was established fall 2010. Energy Usage Reduction included Solar Thermal Hot Water System installed fall 2011- $4,000 annual savings and reduction of paper usage and mailings- 2009-2012- $45,000 annual savings, and other efforts totaling $80,000 annual savings.
