Therefore, no qualified student will be denied admission to this school on the basis of sex, race, color, or national origin. 2 Scarlet Dear Mater Dei Family, As I write this letter for the Summer Edition of the Scarlet & Gray Magazine, I look back with tremendous pride and gratitude upon the graduating Class of 2007. I congratulate Patrick Murphy and salute ASB President and Valedictorian Nick Normandin for his outstanding leadership this school year and for his inspirational words to the graduates at the UCI Bren Center at this year’s wonderful graduation ceremony on June 2. My sincerest commendations and congratulations as well to Salutatorian Stephen Lamb for his incredible graduation speech and to the entire graduating Class of 2007 for the inspirational imprint they made on the treasured history of Mater Dei. As the 2006-2007 school year wound down, the Mater Dei community was dazzled with the incredible display of theatrical, vocal and comedic talent in the Senior Musical production of “Thoroughly Modern Millie”; marveled at the depth and quality of the scholarships, awards and accolades bestowed upon the senior class at Senior Awards Night; moved by the reverence and emotion of a beautiful Baccalaureate Mass celebration; and reveled in the pure fun and excitement of the final Senior Class activity for the Class of 2007, Grad Nite at Soka University. As we bid a fond farewell to the outstanding Class of 2007, we gaze forward with tremendous anticipation and excitement to the 2007-2008 school year as we welcome over 650 freshman students to the Mater Dei family. This freshman class will never know MDHS without a pool, or an elevator (we actually have two now) but will still have to look for the tennis courts (thanks to directions from the seniors on Freshman Orientation Day). They will find a new “Little Theater” in the old gymnasium area and be introduced to completely wireless technology on campus when they arrive in late August. All students, both those returning as well as our new freshmen, will also see the installation of new energy efficient windows in the 100, 200 and administrative wings of the school along with new interior security black wrought-iron fencing which will allow us to host events in the new Athletics Center while keeping the rest of the campus closed. As we complete the funding and financing component of the new Athletics & Aquatics Complex, planning and design development &Gray Magazine • Summer 2007 continues on the proposed Performing Arts Center at Mater Dei. As the next phase of our redevelopment plan for MDHS it is our dream and goal to eventually construct a 750-seat state-of-the-art theater complex complete with a dance studio, instrumental musical facility, drama classrooms, choral music center, performing arts offices and rehearsal studios, as well the home of the new MD bookstore and MDTV broadcast center. While all of these changes and upgrades to the physical plant at Mater Dei are very much needed and are most exciting, the most important aspect of our school, the holistic growth and development of our students (“committed to providing a holistic education that compliments the mind and body and uplifts the spirit,” that is the essence of Mater Dei), always remains first and foremost in the minds of the educational leaders at MDHS. To that end we sincerely thank and commend our Bishop Tod D. Brown who continues to generously provide so many families with financial aid each year, allowing those who otherwise could not afford to do so the opportunity to receive an outstanding Catholic, college preparatory high school education (30% of the families at Mater Dei receive some level of financial aid). In addition, we are most grateful to so many generous parents, alumni, past parents and friends of Mater Dei for their ongoing generosity in supplementing our Bishop’s generosity through their memorial and alumni gift grants, as well as their planned gifts to the Monarch Legacy Endowment Fund. We are so blessed to have so many who care so much to help us to continue to carry on the legacy of a Catholic school that is truly open and welcoming to a diverse population of students and families. No matter how much the buildings and landscape may change at the corner of Bristol and Edinger in Santa Ana, California, the founding spirit of Honor, Glory and Love at Mater Dei will never change. It does not matter whether you are a 57-year alum or an incoming freshman, you are always welcomed and embraced as a member of the Mater Dei family. As we say goodbye and God speed to the Class of 2007 and welcome in the Class of 2011, we ask Our Lord God to bless, guide and protect the entire Mater Dei family throughout the Summer of 2007. Sincerely in Mater Dei, Patrick Murphy, President Congratulations to the Class of 2007 Each year, hundreds of students are honored at the annual Senior Awards Night. This year was no exception and the Class of 2007 had many reasons to be proud. Awards were given for achievements both in and out of the classroom. Students were recognized by Mater Dei as well as a number of local and national organizations. The evening began by recognizing the California Scholarship Federation seal bearers and scholarship recipients. Students who have been in CSF for four semesters, including the first semester of senior year, earn seal-bearer status. The CSF Scholarship Awards were given to JESSICA COLE, STEVEN DO, CYNTHIA FELIX, LAUREN GOULD, MIMOSA LUONG, SARAH MARSH, ANH NGUYEN and TIFFANY NGUYEN. Students were also recognized for their participation in the National Honor Society. Mater Dei awards chapter scholarships each year and those went to IAN CONNOLLY, MARY FLYNN, STEVEN HAUGEN, REGINA GALASSI, CHRISTINA LE and NICHOLAS MANGINELLI. Connolly and Le were also nominated by the school for NHS’s national scholarship competition. Fifty-six seniors were recognized as outstanding scholars at Mater Dei by earning an overall GPA of 4.0 or higher. AMANDA LIM graduated with the single highest GPA in the Class of 2007, a 4.62. Five other students earned over a 4.5 GPA: STEPHEN LAMB, JESSE RAU, CHRISTINA MANH, MARY FLYNN and JESSICA LAI. Four members of the Class of 2007 were named National Merit Finalists: Lawrence Chang, Mary Flynn, Stephen Lamb and Amanda Lim. They earned this honor by scoring at the top ½ of 1% of all juniors in California on the PSAT/NMSQT. Ten other seniors, HARMONY BARKER , NATALIE BEISNER, IAN CONNOLLY, STEVEN HAUGEN, CHRISTINA MANH, ERIC MCCOWN, CARINA MENDOZA, ANH B. NGUYEN, JESSE RAU, JOHNATHAN TRAN and JANELLE VU were recognized by the National Merit Corporation as Commended Students. The two student-athletes who were recognized as the Male and Female Athletes of the Year were Duke-bound basketball standout TAYLOR KING and JACKIE ZINKE who will play soccer at the University of Arizona next year. King and Zinke each had their respective jerseys retired this year after earning CIF Player of the Year honors. The National Art Honor Society awarded scholarships to MOLLY COSTELLO and CHRISTINA RISING. MOLLY COSTELLO was also named Artist of the Year. Many members of the Class of 2007 went far above and beyond their class requirement of 80 hours of community service. This is especially true for GERARDO BUTALID who volunteered over 1,500 hours in the community. Each year a number of internal Mater Dei scholarships are awarded thanks to the generosity of alumni, past parents and friends of Mater Dei. Tyler was one of 20 students selected from high school seniors nominated OC Family Magazine from all of Orange Shining Student, County's public Tyler Brady and private campuses. These young men and women were featured in the June 2007 issue of OC Family Magazine as being the County's best and brightest. The students were selected based on qualities that seem best suited to make a difference. They are teens who are full of vision and fully capable of changing the world. Tyler was involved in a number of campus clubs as well as a member of the baseball team. He will continue his baseball career next year at Cypress College. Tyler has achieved so much in such a short amount of time, it will be exciting to see what his future holds. One of Tyler’s greatest assets is his determination and attitude. His profile states, "I let nothing stop me and I try to do the best at everything I do." &Gray Magazine • Summer 2007 3 Surf’s Up 2007 Raises Over $425,000 Over 500 Mater Dei parents, alumni, faculty, friends and corporate supporters gathered at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel in March for what turned out to be the school's most successful Surf's Up dinner and auction to date. The annual all-school fundraiser raised over $425,000 that will continue to fund visual arts technology on the Mater Dei campus. PATRICK MURPHY, president of Mater Dei High School, was astounded by the outcome of the event. "Surf's Up 2007 raised more than $425,000 which will go Senior Caroline O’Neill and “Monarch”, the yellow lab directly to the puppy that was part of the benefit of our live auction students," Murphy said. Proceeds from the annual event have led to vast improvements on Mater Dei's 57-year-old campus through technology upgrades in the classroom. "Thanks to Surf's Up, we now have a state-of-the-art visual arts facility that matches some of the best high school facilities in California," he added. The evening began with a silent auction featuring an impressive array of items that enticed even the shyest of bidders, including a high definition, flat screen television and Nintendo Wii, a private yacht cruise, and the opportunity to get behind the scenes of the LAPD SWAT Team for the day. Longtime Mater Dei foundation partner, the William H. Hannon Foundation, donated a Pleasant Holidays vacation for two to Maui as the grand prize for the oppor- to expand its visual arts facilities and programs to include digital arts and graphic design classes. Proceeds from this year's event will continue to fund campus and technology upgrades to help fulfill Mater Dei's mission of providing an unparalleled quality of education. tunity drawing. The live auction, led by renowned auctioneer CHARLES DREYER, had much to do with the event's success. Big draws included "Viva La Louis Vuitton," a trip to Paris to visit the Louis Vuitton Family Mansion and a sought-after Louis Vuitton duffel bag from the South Coast Plaza store. The crowd also went wild over a Clean Energy donation, the "Green Car"; a natural gas powered 2007 Honda Civic GX that came complete with 1,000 gallons of free natural Surf’s Up guests (l to r) Mary Crowley, Laurie Shaylor and Dutchess Langeland Mater Dei parent and Event Chair, ANISSA GURNEE, attributed the true success of Surf's Up to community and volunteer support. "We could not have held such a spectacular event without the tireless efforts of our parent volunteers who have been preparing for months," she said. "The community support made it a huge success thanks to their attendance and generous donations." Mark your calendars today, Surf’s Up 2008 will take place on Saturday, April 5. Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Fr. Gerald Horan and MD President, Patrick Murphy gas and a home refueling station. The Mater Dei faithful also showed their love for preferred student parking as well as a Monarch football package complete with MD football sportswear and season tickets. Following the dinner and live auction, guests danced until midnight to the sounds of Mark Wood and the Parrot Head Band. A cast and crew of about 50 students, under the direction of Mr. Patrick Williams, amazed two standing-room-only crowds. The Mater Dei Theater Arts department put on a spectacular show for thousands but they could not have done it without the help of many behind the scenes personnel. There was assistance from the Art Department with the sets, Joseph Jarme as Prince the Dance Team with the choreography, the English Department with flyers and publicity as well as the choir with guidance on the singing. The story of Romeo and Juliet was adapted by Williams with a few twists thrown in along the way. The students rehearsed tirelessly for months to get everything just right and in the end, the crowd was not disappointed. In a modern twist, Tybalt, played by Paul Bouyear sings and plays electric guitar Juliet makes her grand enterance into the ball The cast and crew of Romeo and Juliet Trevor Wall as Romeo and Ashley Woods as Juliet Juliet mourns the death of Romeo Romeo and Juliet are married by the Friar, played by Paul Cooper Romeo mourns the death of Juliet 6 Scarlet &Gray Magazine • Summer 2007 Tybalt and Romeo fight MDHS Cheerleading Squad The Mater Dei cheer squad had another very busy year. In addition to showing their Monarch spirit at countless sporting events throughout the year, they competed in events across the country. The Monarchs won the USA Regional Championships, they were named the COA West Coast Grand Champions and the NCA Regional Champions. These three events led up to the three biggest events of the year where they were also very successful. The squad’s countless hours of practice paid off as they were named American Grand Champions, California State Champions and finally, USA National Champions. This is the sixth National Championship for the Mater Dei cheer squad. With the junior varsity team going undefeated in their season, things are looking great for the future of Mater Dei cheer. 2006-07 MDHS Cheer Squad MDHS Dance Team The Mater Dei dance team had another phenomenal year. They put on wonderful pre-game shows at all of the home football games and received tremendous applause and support from the student body for their hip hop and jazz routines at the all school rallies. Their community outreach through dance camps and dance clinics held throughout the year, reached over 300 future monarchs. The dance team hosted 14 Orange County schools at the 2006 Dance Celebration competition fundraiser held in December in the new gym. The team also had a very successful competition season, bringing home over 40 trophies. A few of the highlights being a Sportsmanship Award at Arlington High School, a Best in Choreography at Wilson High School, Best Overall in Hip Hop at Miss Dance Drill/Team California Pageant and a second overall at Nationals in Orlando, Florida. The 17 member team represented Mater Dei with true Monarch pride, courage and love everywhere they traveled this year. 2006-07 MDHS Dance Team Monarchs Help Spread Knowledge Across the Globe The Mater Dei track & field team ended their league schedule in a very special way this year. The team held an outreach challenge for all athletes and parents at the Orange Lutheran meet. Each athlete was asked to bring three supply items to the event. All other family members and fans were also asked to contribute as well. The participation was outstanding. The team collected over 1,500 pounds of books and school supplies at the one day outreach. The items were then divided and shipped to three very needy areas. One half was shipped to Eastern Africa where Jennifer Villa ‘00 is a teacher with the Peace Corp. A large number of supplies went to the local Catholic Worker location and the remainder of the items were taken to Tijuana. The generosity of the track & field athletes as well as their families went far and above anything COACH RICK MARTINEZ ‘83 could have imagined. “I knew we’d get quite a bit of stuff because the team was asked to bring in three items each, but nearly the entire team went above and beyond that three item request,” stated Martinez. Monar ch Legacy Endowment What is an Endowment? An endowment is a sum of money that is given to Mater Dei with the stipulation that the funds are invested to earn annual interest rather than spent immediately. A portion of the annual earnings is used toward financial aid. The rest of the earnings are reallocated back into the fund's corpus to insure that the endowment continues to grow and yield more interest for future financial aid. The Goal: To build a reserve of funds that will allow qualified students, who would not otherwise be able to afford the tuition at Mater Dei, the opportunity to attend the school. Financially, we hope to raise $10 million for the endowment within the next decade. How do I get involved? Gifts toward the endowment can take a number of different forms. The school accepts cash, stocks or other marketable securities, bequests and other planned gifts. One of the most common ways to make a gift to the Monarch Legacy Endowment is through an estate plan or by naming it as one of the beneficiaries of an insurance policy, annuity or retirement account. There are many more ways to give as well. If you have an interest in the long-term viability of the financial aid program at Mater Dei, please contact Patrick Murphy, President, or Jonathan Tufo, VP Advancement for more information at [email protected] or (714) 850-9534. Through your endowment gift, you will help secure the future of Mater Dei High School for generations to come.
