GLORIA DEI GOOD NEWS Freed by Christ We Gather, Grow, Give, and Go All to the Glory of God. 5500 East 57th St. Sioux Falls SD 57108 (605) 371-3737 www.gloriadei-sd.org AUGUST 2016 Summer Worship Schedule Saturday 5:00 p.m. Sunday 9:00 a.m. 10:30 a.m. Summer Office Hours Monday-Thursday 8:00 a.m.– 3:00 p.m. Friday 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. A complete calendar of events and video recordings of all Gloria Dei sermons are available on our website www.gloriadei-sd.org For general email: [email protected] IN THIS ISSUE A Word from Pastor Selbo Hope in Christ Recently a friend shared with me the trials, temptations, and struggles that she is facing. She asked me, “Tim, do you think I can get through all of this?” She is facing some tough stuff, so my temptation was to answer, “No – I don’t think you’ll be able make it. You’re facing too much. It sounds way too hard; way too difficult.” Maybe we all think that way at times about some of our own struggles and trials. But then I was reminded that our hope does not lie in ourselves and our ability to buck up and make it through on our own. As Christians, we confess that Jesus was raised to new life. And upon his resurrection, he gave us the everlasting gift of himself and his presence through the Holy Spirit. In other words, as we face trials and struggles, it may be true that on our own we would be lost. But we are not alone. Our hope does not lie solely in ourselves and our abilities. Rather, our hope lies in the One who has defeated sin and death, and promises to make us new in him. Jesus says to us, “I have come that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.” (John 15:11) Announcements page 2-3 Worship Arts page 4 Fellowship Ministries page 5 Children, Youth and Family Ministries page 6-10 Confirmation page 10 Health Ministries page 11-12 Mission and Outreach page 12-13 Simply Giving page 14 Financial News page 15 Church Council page 15 Library News page 16 Scouting News page 17 Like the apostle Paul, our motto is to be “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13) No matter what you ar e facing; no matter the trials, Jesus’ Spirit is your advocate. The empty cross and empty tomb are guarantees of God’s love for you. Let’s all, every day, give our burdens over to Christ and be filled with the hope and joy he alone can give. Staff Directory page 18 Pastor Tim He also says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28) Jesus is serious about this; he really means it. He has come to give us his joy, and to give us rest from the heavy burdens we sometimes carry. Often Jesus will work through fellow Christians. When you are carrying heavy burdens, talk to Jesus about them, but also talk to a friend, family member, or spiritual mentor. Our burdens become lighter when we share them. I pray that your life is filled with joy. The joy of experiencing God’s love in our lives rises above our outer circumstances. Yet, as summer continues and fall is right around the corner, our lives get busier with full schedules and many responsibilities. Rest in Jesus. WELCOME NEW PASTORS Gloria Dei is thrilled to welcome two new full-time pastors in August. Pastor Sarah Goldammer will begin work on August 1. Her focus will be on confirmation, youth and young adult ministry. Pastor Chris Zuraff begins on August 22 and will focus on adult education and mission and outreach. Both new pastors will also share in all aspects of pastoral ministry. WELCOME, Pastor Sarah and Pastor Chris!! Pastor Sarah Goldammer writes: Pastor Sarah grew up in Aberdeen, SD and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School. She attended University Nebraska –Lincoln, and graduated with her BS from South Dakota State University. She received her Master’s in Divinity from Luther Seminary in the Spring of 2009. Sarah and her husband Eric have three biological children, Eli who will be in 2nd grade, Emma who will be in 1st grade, and Amelia who is 3 and starts preschool this year. Away from her job Pastor Sarah loves to spend time with her family, reading, and traveling. Pastor Chris Zuraff writes: I was born and raised in Sioux Falls. I graduated from Roosevelt High School and attended Augustana College. I majored in Religion and have a minor in Philosophy. My wife Katie and I were married right after we graduated from Augustana (07/07/07, so I'll never forget my anniversary). We moved to St. Paul so I could begin seminary at Luther and Katie could begin teaching in special education. We moved for internship to Battle Lake, MN where we lived across the street from Ottertail Lake, on a golf course. It was a rough year ;-) Our oldest daughter Emmalyn was born two weeks before we moved to Battle Lake. Upon graduation from seminary, I took my first call in Clarkfield, MN at a small, rural congregation. We lived in Clarkfield for 5 years and had two children, Nolan and Adelyn, while living there. After 5 years, God's call to serve alongside of the people of Gloria Dei in Sioux Falls came and we are excited to be joining you in your ministry! My favorite color is: green. My favorite food is: all of it! My favorite hobbies are: paddling in the Boundary Waters, hiking, gardening/farming, brewing homemade beer, and reading. My loves of my life are: my wife and kids. 2 ANNOUNCEMENTS continued Congratulations and God’s Blessings to: Tim and Emily Sass on the birth of their daughter, Colette Wesley, on June 23. Good-bye from Rachael It is with a heavy heart that I announce that I am going to be leaving Gloria Dei on August 7 in order to return to teaching vocal 7-12 music at West Lyon Schools in Iowa. I’m so sad to be leaving this beloved place, with wonderful people, outstanding pastors and staff, and supportive friends! But I’m feeling called to return to the teaching environment. It has truly been a blessing to be a part of Gloria Dei, and I am so grateful for all the things I’ve been able to learn, how I’ve been encouraged and allowed to grow, and for all the love and support that have surrounded me here. This is truly the best place to work. I cannot say thank you enough to the supportive, kind, and awesome pastors and staff. Your leadership, guidance, and encouragement is something I will always treasure. Thank you for putting up with me! Thank you also, to the congregation for welcoming me with open arms and allowing me to enter into your Christian family. As I anxiously enter this new endeavor, I take with me wonderful memories, a stronger faith, and confidence that Gloria Dei is a wonderful place that will only keep growing deeper in faith, and wider in ministry. God’s peace and blessings to you and yours! ~Rachael Fode, Media Ministry.
