IN THIS ISSUE
“Sir, if you have carried Jesus away, tell me where you have laid
him, and I will take him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” ...And
Mary went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the
Lord.” — John, chapter 20
In our year long reading of the New Testament, we've arrived at the gospel of John.
If you need a reading schedule, look on our website, or pick up a schedule on the
Welcome Table at church. It's never too late to start reading the Bible.
John's gospel gives a grand picture of Jesus as the Son of God, who was with God
even at the beginning of time, and who indeed is God in the flesh. Throughout the
gospel we see Jesus performing signs, or miracles, that point to Jesus being God in
the flesh. Within our Wednesday evening services during Lent we are focusing on
some of those signs (water into wine, walking on water, healing of the blind man,
raising of Lazarus and more).
Then, as we approach Holy Week and the celebration of Easter, we will tell the
story of Jesus' arrest, suffering, death, and resurrection. What a great story it is;
God in the flesh among us, living to show us the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and
then dying on the cross for our sins, only to be raised to new life by God. Jesus'
death and resurrection is God's ultimate act of love for you and me; an act that has
defeated the power of sin and death forever.

Pastor Tim
Jesus tells us in John 15: "This is my commandment, that you love one another as I
have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's
friends. I do not call you servants any longer, but I call you friends." If you
haven't before, begin now by thinking of yourself as a friend of Jesus; a friend of
God. As a friend of God, you are a recipient of the amazing grace he has to offer.
He will never leave you or forsake you. And he will both inspire you and give you
the strength to live out his commandment to love one another - to befriend one
another.
In the gospel of John, upon Jesus’ resurrection, Mary Magdalene recognizes him
only as he calls her by name. As you gather at Gloria Dei with your sisters and
brothers in the faith, come looking for Jesus, as
Mary did. You just may be surprised that the
Living Christ (your Lord, your Savior, your
friend) calls you by name, and your life is
changed forever by God's ultimate act of love.

March Partnership Ministry - The Banquet
As a Servant…
…we serve those in need
…we are humbled
…we do His will without question or hesitation
…we are the hands and feet of God.
Gloria Dei will be serving The Banquet on Thursday, March 17. Sign-up sheets are located on the kiosk
in the Gathering Area. The help of approximately eight people is needed in the morning from 9:30 a.m.
to 12:00 p.m. or from 10:15 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. to prepare the food. Approximately 45 people are needed
in the evening from 5:15-8:00 p.m. to serve the food, pour beverages, give out and take tickets and, of
course, wash dishes and clean-up. For those of you unfamiliar with The Banquet, it is an ecumenical
feeding ministry here in Sioux Falls whose mission is to provide a safe place for people to gather and
receive food and fellowship for the body and for the soul. It is located at 900 E. 8 th Street. They
serve evening meals Monday through Friday, lunch on Saturdays and breakfast on Monday-Friday. It is
a great opportunity to help those in need in our own community.
If you would like to help The Banquet in other ways, they are always in need of coffee (any brand,
regular or decaf, but PLEASE NO flavored coffee), sugar, salt, stamps, clean plastic containers with
lids such as those from margarine, yogurt or cottage cheese, plastic grocery bags, books, and current
magazines for all ages (please cut the mailing label off). If you have any of these items and would like
to donate them, you may drop them off at The Banquet at 8th Street and Indiana Avenue.
GLORIA DEI QUILTING
Wednesday Lenten Offering
Our Gloria Dei Quilting groups contribute quilts to Lutheran
World Relief and also to local charities. Have you ever wondered
where Lutheran World Relief quilts go? In 2015, a total of 332,592
LWR quilts were sent to:
Angola, Burkina Faso, Djibouti, Georgia, India, Lebanon, Mali,
Mauritania, Nepal, Philippines, Tanzania, Thailand, Ukraine.
First and foremost, recipients use their LWR quilts to shield against
the cold and rain, and for warm bedding. But their versatility also
makes quilts useful as simple tents, floor coverings, or a wrap to
hold a baby on a mother’s back.
Visit www.lwr.org for more information.

100% of the Wednesday
offering during Lent will be
used to feed the hungry. The
offerings will be split evenly

WALKING SOULS
We have been walking to Jerusalem now for a little over two weeks and I trust your Lenten walking is going well. I'm not sure how
much you know about Jerusalem, but I want to share some general tidbits with you about early Jerusalem's first 500 years.
 Jerusalem is the site of much turmoil through the ages. It has been destroyed, besieged, attacked, captured and recaptured
countless times.
 Jerusalem is a central city in both the Jewish and the Islam religions.
 Archeological evidence indicates the first settlement in what would become Jerusalem was built between 4500-3500 BCE (before
the common era) or BC (before the birth of Christ).
 The Israelite history in Jerusalem began in 1,000 BCE when King David conquered Jerusalem. After this it became the City of
David, and the capital of the United Kingdom of Israel.
 It was at the site of Mount Moriah that David constructed an altar and brought the Ark of the Covenant to the city.
Jerusalem now was not only the political, but also the spiritual center for the Jewish people. Sacrifices were offered here and the
people had three pilgrimages a year, including the all important Passover. ( Did you
know that it was also on Mount Moriah that obedient Abraham was ready to offer Isaac
as an offering to God? The Bible is so rich in symbolism!)
 David was part of God's plan as a successful warrior, and his son Solomon built the
grand Temple of Solomon at about the same site.
 Near the end of Solomon's reign, the Kingdom of Judah split from the Kingdom of Israel
and Jerusalem became the capital of the Kingdom of Judah.
 As the years progressed and the Kingdom of Israel was decimated, Jerusalem again had
paramount status.
Let’s take this period of Lent to exercise the physical body by walking, exercise the spiritual body by praying, and exercise the mind
by learning about Jerusalem. Blessings to you on your journey! Judi

These wonderful children’s Easter books will be on the shelf and ready to check out in March. They are located in the Children’s Area
in the back of the library. Also new: The Super Gifts of Spring by Dandi Daley Mackall.
Several biblical DVDs have been added this month. A.D. The Bible Continues is the continuation of where The Bible left off. The
journey begins with the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. The Gospel of John, Saul, The Book of Daniel, and The Book of Ruth
are all excellent movies to watch for biblical history. The Friends of Jesus, written by Karen Kingsbury, includes the stories of Simon,
Martha, Jairus, Mary Magdalene, Peter and John, friends with whom Jesus surrounded himself.
Eve, written by Wm. Paul Young, author of The Shack, is a
novel that is a bold, unprecedented exploration of the Creation
narrative, true to the original texts and centuries of scholarship,
yet with breathtaking discoveries that challenge traditional
beliefs about who we are and how we’re made.
The Beginner’s Bible set of four DVDs, each with 3-4 stories,
includes The Story of Easter, The Story of Jesus and His
Miracles, The Story of Daniel and the Lion’s Den, The Story of
the Battle of Jericho, The Story of the Prodigal Son, The Story
of the Good Samaritan, The Story of Noah’s Ark and more.
The five book series, The Last Jihad, will be completed with the
addition of The Last Days and The Copper Scroll, books two
and four, respectively, of the series. Author Joel C. Rosenberg
is an American strategist and has written several books on
Middle East politics, Bible prophecy and political thrillers.
The Saddle Club movies are very popular check-outs in the
Youth section. Two new DVDs will be added to the collection:
The Saddle Club: Friends Forever and The Saddle Club:
Saving Pine Hollow.

Boy Scout Mission: Is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law.
Boy Scouts & Cub Scouts of Gloria Dei celebrated Scout Sunday on February 7 th by ushering, greeting, lectoring and serving breakfast.
On February 6, the annual Klondike Derby was held at the Newton Hills Boy Scout Camp. It was postponed from an extremely cold
Saturday in January. Some of the older Scouts of Troop 371 helped plan for the event along with the District and then ran the six
individual stations. Each of the six Scout units that attended was scored at each station and the highest scoring units received an award
at each station.
March Scout Calendar
Twelve scouts and five adults from Troop 371 went on a winter “campout” to the
Shetek Boy Scout Camp January 29-31. They spent the day outside working on
orienteering and exploring and having some “snow fun.” In the evening they had
some indoor fun and of course cooked and ate some tasty food. The adults enjoyed
sitting in front of the blaze in the massive fireplace, not being “attached” to any
phones or computers.
