WELCOME TO THE NATIVE FISH SOCIETY’S
20TH ANNUAL BENEFIT BANQUET + AUCTION
This year we are celebrating our 20th anniversary of protecting and restoring
wild, native fish and their habitats throughout the Pacific Northwest. Our
accomplishments have been many and we are incredibly proud of our dedicated
staff and members for helping us achieve goals we would have never dreamed of
20 years ago.
A vibrant River Steward community, increasing habitat protections and changing
policy to benefit wild fish are just a few examples of our success. You will hear more
about our recent accomplishments and what we plan to do in 2016 a little later in
the evening.
Forty percent of our annual budget comes from our Homewaters Banquet and
Auction. Donations of goods and services to this years event have been the most
generous in the history of our organization. We have world class trips, epic gear
and dining options from all over the Portland area in this year’s mix. We can’t thank
our wonderful donors enough for their continued support!
Your generosity is what allows us to get things done! We encourage you tonight to
raise your paddles high to honor the important work we do. Please help us make
our 21st year the best ever!
Best wild fishes!

Scenic Rivers Speyside Ale
ABV- 6.8% (keg) 7.4% (bottle) IBUs-19
A richly malty and deeply complex ode to the Scottish ales of old, the Scenic
Rivers Speyside Ale is a showcase of old Speyside flavors alongside new world flair.
Featuring Scottish Golden Promise malt, a cool and restrained ale fermentation
profile, and an extended aging on Scotch-soaked Oregon Oak, this brew is elevated
with a light dose of Glenfarclas Speyside Scotch and heather tips at the end of it’s
conditioning phase.
Honoring the deep connection between the Spey River and Pacific Northwest
steelheading, and celebrating the newly designated State Scenic Waterway status of
the Molalla and Chetco rivers, this brew is warm, inviting, and satisfying, like laying
out a long cast, swinging through a perfectly structured run, and feeling the strong
pull of a wild, native steelhead on the end of your line.
Cheers to NFS and 20 years advocating for wild, native fish!

most popular salmon and steelhead reel period! Anglers from all

indeed the Saracione reel of choice. If you’re looking for a classic,

Donor: Rich Zellman, Steelhead Water Guide Service
Dates: July 31 & August 1, 2016
2 Anglers / 2 Days Guided Fishing on the North Umpqua for Summer
Steelhead
Rich Zellman is no ordinary guy. His life has been destroyed (in a good
way) by steelhead in the best and truest sense. Out of all that steelhead
ruination emerged a guide with seemingly supernatural abilities. Based
out of Ashland, OR, Rich mentored under legendary steelhead guide
Scott Howell. Since then, Rich has developed a reputation for tying
some of the most beautiful steelhead flies anywhere and knowing the
how, when and why for catching wild steelhead on some of the most
beautiful and challenging rivers in S. Oregon and N. California.
We guarantee that you will learn more about the North Umpqua and its
magnificent wild steelhead in two days with Rich than you would fishing
it by yourself in a decade. Zellman is truly a steelhead ninja, guru, and
wizard rolled into one man + Labrador package. Fish with this guy on
the North and you will never fish for steelhead the same.

Donors: John & Amy Hazel, Deschutes Angler
CF Burkheimer 7wt 14’1” Presentation Spey Rod & Kingpin
Traditional Spey Reel
This is the quintessential big water steelhead outfit. This soulful
“Presentation” finished Burkhiemer 14’ 1” two handed seven weight
is at home on legendary rivers like the Deschutes, Skeena, Dean,
Bulkley, or Clearwater. Its smooth and crisp action enables the angler
to effortlessly reach out and cover the broadest water with skaters or
skagit style methods.
Now hold onto your socks because the Hazel’s have paired this beautiful
rod with a 3 ¾” Kingpin Traditional Spey reel. Reversible left or right
hand retrieve, Kingpin Spey reels are fashioned after the traditional
British gear and pawl click adjustable drags that have proven themselves
for over a 100 years. Precision machined out of aerospace aluminum,
the exposed palming rim, brass reel foot and line guard and the hand
release spool cap are a few of the features that set Kingpin reels apart.
Together, this Burkheimer and Kingpin setup is a match made in wild

Two Handed Bamboo Bliss
Donor: Marty Karstetter, Karstetter Fly Rods
11’ 3” 6/7 wt 5 sided, 3 piece hollow built two-handed bamboo fly
rod
This hollow-cane beauty, handcrafted by legendary rod builder Marty
Karstetter, is the stuff of sweet steelhead dreams. At 11’ 3” 6/7 wt twohanded rod is a work of painstaking genius -- it only weighs 10oz -- and
is hollow from handle to tip. Included are two top sections, each unique,
one designed for casting dry lines and the other for casting heavier flies
and sink tips. This particular rod is perfectly suited to cast a 360-390
grain scandi.
Marty Karstetter has been crafting beautiful and revered bamboo rods
for over thirty years with only his happy customers for advertising.
When I spoke to Marty last month he said, “This rod is flawless in every
way down to the 1/1000th of an inch. But with wood rods, there’s
something going on beyond the build -- every cane rod is different stick
to stick, depending upon the particular piece of bamboo. This one is
made from a particularly good piece of cane.” I’d take his word for it.
Don’t miss your chance to own this incredible rod.

Farlex’s Big River Reel
Donor: Farlex Reels, Tim Gelinas
4” S-handle multiplier 2x with brass hardware click/pawl and gear
drag fly reel
In Farlex, owner and designer Tim Gelinas has found the perfect
medium to express his passion for the traditional salmon and
steelhead fly reel. Tim personally assembles each reel to ensure that
they meet his exacting standards. This high capacity 4” Farlex reel
weighs 16oz, perfect for that big water rod, 13-15ft. Can you hear
those Dean, Skeena and Thompson river steelhead calling?
This reel is of the classic click and pawl design with just enough
check to slow a hot running fish, but not so much to diminish the
power of that first big run. This reel is a multiplier 2x, so each crank
of the handle winds up twice as much line, helpful for those unruly
wild fish. This brass appointed beauty features a two-way in and out
check/click and can easily be switched from a left hand wind to a
right hand wind, ideal for whatever your preference. Don’t miss an
opportunity to add this Northwest designed and built masterpiece to
your bigwater kit

Dates: Mutually Agreed Upon During Prime Chinook, Summer or
Winter Steelhead Season
1 Angler / 1 Day with John & Tom
Join former steelhead guide and author John Larison and his old
friend, Tom Bie, editor of fly fishing’s most successful magazine,
THE DRAKE, for a day swinging flies during primetime. John has
just finished his next novel and Tom continues to pioneer fishing
destinations around the world. Every year, these two Oregonians
convene to chase coastal chrome, and they’d like to invite you along
for a day you won’t soon forget.
You pick the pursuit: spey casting for summer/winter steelhead or
hunting big tidal salmon from Larison’s skiff. There’s only space in
the boat for one very lucky angler.

Over 40 years ago, Patagonia’s first environmental grant was given to Friends of the
Ventura River. Since then, we’ve donated $71 million to grassroots environmental groups,
including over $13 million to groups like the Native Fish Society that protect wild native
fish and the habitats they depend on around the world. We’ve always believed in the
power of citizens to affect positive change, and we thank you for your dedicated work on
behalf of the natural world.
