This year I hit the jackpot and had an excellent buffet of all four. With two little ones this was the first year that we were able to enjoy some fireworks with them as opposed to cursing them late into the night hoping they wouldn’t wake our kids up! We had a small show for them and enjoyed some of the neighbor’s bigger fireworks into the night. In my family the family time and food is just always good… so that is never a concern. Of course next is fishing. I was really looking forward to getting on the water and fishing one of my favorite techniques. I love fishing frogs in the really thick and nasty stuff for bass. I figured the sun and warm temperatures we had forecasted would be conducive to frog fishing. Man was I wrong! I fished the pads and slop hard and only pulled one fish. On the lake I was on this was pretty unheard of. I think at least some of the blame lands on the weather. We had more clouds and I was never really able to time my fishing to late afternoon high sun which is my favorite time to throw frogs. The good news is that I am not too stubborn and actually had pretty good luck pitching creature baits, and jigs. In fact my first fish of the trip was a nice 3 lb 7 oz bass, which is my biggest fish on that lake. I caught several more 3 pounders and had my best luck off the deep weed edge. The fish were grouped up a little bit so I often caught 2-3 by replicating casts. I was able to learn a couple of important things on this trip. The first is that you can’t control the fish, even though I wanted to catch them on a frog, the fish weren’t interested. I likely would have caught a few more had I ditched that technique a little earlier. I really wanted it to work so I probably hung on just a little too long. The second was the location of the fish I was catching. This lake, like plenty of other lakes in the North Country, gets very busy over the Fourth of July holiday. I am thinking that the heavy boat traffic likely pushed fish a little deeper. One question for you, my average fish on this trip was very good. Typically I catch smaller fish and lots of numbers on this lake, but this time I caught fewer fish but bigger fish. The jig fishing likely had something to do with that but I caught my big fish on a standard 3-4” creature bait. Have you ever had a big fish bite when the lake got busy? Any other ideas as to why I had a bigger fish? Head back to our Facebook page and comment. Would also love to know what kind of luck you had over © Lindner Media Productions 2014 Lindner’s Angling Edge on Facebook Page 2 of 3 Fourth of July - Family, Food, Fireworks and Fishing Published on Lindner Media (http://www.lindnermedia.com) the holiday! Until next time next time good luck on the water and don’t forget to keep one eye on the sky!
