Want to catch a muskie?
If you want to catch a muskie and perhaps
a big muskie you may want to go to Lake
of the Woods and get Wendell Webb for a
guide. Wendell is a member of the Rock
Valley Anglers and described efforts of Operaation Muskie, an organization that takes
Armed Service Veterans on a muskie outing
to Lake of the Woods. Wendell is not a professional guide but has a lot of experience fishing
Lake of the Woods and is one of the most successful volunteer guides for Operation Muskie.
Just a few hints from Wendell:
His favorite all around lure is a #9 Shad
Rap. Not only does is catch muskies but a
variety of other fish when casting for muskies.
For fishing in heavy weeds he likes a
white spinnerbait
In Lake of the Woods and other shallow
fishing areas look for weeds- pencil grass,
cabbage, and coontail.
Look for trees fallen in the water, especially
freshly fallen trees. The Wisconsin DNR is
catching on to this idea for providing more cover
in lakes, especially lakes with highly developed
shorelines. They are promoting dense woody
cover (i.e. dropping shoreline trees into the lake)
Rock bars and underwater saddles between
islands or shore and an island are also
good locations.
Don’t give up on Figure 8ing, once
or twice around may not me enough to
get a muskie to commit to hitting.
If a location looks good or if you had luck in a
spot before, stick with it. Muskies often don’t hit
on the first cast into an area. Work the area hard.
If you want a real adrenaline rush try
fishing topwater baits at night although a
full moon is not the best time for night fishing.
If you are using or make twin bladed
spinners (i.e. cowgirls) try using two different
size spinner blades for better action.

Winona, MN (May 2014) Minnesota Marine Art Museum
Just in time for the region’s fishing season,
the Minnesota Marine Art Museum in Winona
is proud to announce a unique exhibition of
fish x-rays, on loan from the Smithsonian.
The exhibition is X-Ray Vision: Fish Inside
Out and will be on display from May 16 –
August 10, 2014. Artfully composed with striking
elegance, the images in the exhibition are large
radiographs that reveal the skeletal anatomy
of select species from around the world. The
exhibition includes 40 dramatic and artfully created digital prints paired with illustrated labels.
X-Ray Vision: Fish Inside Out is organized
by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of
Natural History and the Smithsonian Institution
Traveling Exhibition Services (SITES), and
inspired by Ichthyo: The Architecture of
Fish (Chronicle Books, 2008), by Stephanie
Comer and Deborah Klochko, with essays
by Jean-Michel Cousteau, Daniel Pauly and
Lynne R. Parenti and X-rays by Sandra J.
Raredon. The exhibition has local media
sponsorship provided by Winona Radio.
There is always something new to experience at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum,
a nonprofit art museum and education center
supported by over 1,000 members, donors,
granters and sponsors. It is located at 800
Riverview Drive in Winona and is surrounded
by acres of native prairie gardens along the
Mississippi River. Gallery and MMAM Store
hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 10am –
5pm. More information about the Museum is
available at their new website, www.mmam.org.

with Captain John Iverson.

Sept. Lake Erie Walleye and Perch, Smallies as collateral damage – I have booked the
charter as we have 4 persons interested to
date. This is a long weekend charter Friday
and Saturday, arrive Thursday, Sept. 18th, fish
Friday and Saturday, depart Sunday. It’s about
a 7 hr. drive to Port Clinton. This is with Captain
Hooks (Captain Pete) out of Sandusky/Port
Clinton. The rate for 3 nights lodging (Condos
on a 25 acre lake) and 2 day fishing is $295.00
per person. A fishing license for the US
side is $11.00 per day, if the best fishing is
on the Canadian side, the license is $22.00
per day, Captain Pete prefers the US side
but he will go where the fish are. The daily
limit on Walleye is 6, no possession limit,
for Perch it is 30 daily, no possession limit
Oct . 18th, a Saturday. Usually a great
time to fish the Barge out of Genoa. However
the last trips have been plagued by excessive
weeds floating down the river making fishing
very difficult at best. This is still a possible, but
if the weed report is not good, we may opt for
hitting the local waters for a one day outing.
Nov. 8th a Saturday. One day outing
to Lake Wisconsin for Walleye and Sauger.
More detail as we get closer to the date.

Fishing Has No Boundaries
This is their 20th year of fishing fun on Lake Mendota, this year on
July 12 &13. Fishing Has No Boundaries needs volunteers to help with
the annual event held at Governor Nelson State Park on Lake Mendota.
Boats, especially Pontoon boats that can accommodate wheel
chairs, fishing guides, and fishing assistance are needed.
Volunteer: contact Nancy Loker 608-873-8085 or [email protected]
The Madison Chapter of Fishing Has No Boundaries was started in
July of 1995. Since that time the event has been held on the 2nd full
weekend in July at Governor Nelson State Park. The park is located off
county highway M on the southwest shore of beautiful Lake Mendota. 70
boats and pontoons and about 300 volunteers are available to provide a
quality on the water fishing experience for anglers with disabilities. All
food and beverages are provided for the 2 day event including a fish
fry on Saturday night provided by Yahara Fishing Club. Entertainment
is provided by a 7 piece band for dancing and toe tapping listening.

Big Bay Du Noc 2014 Memoral Day
Our club combined with
the Rock Valley Angler Club
for two great outings on Big
Bay de Noc for superb smallmouth bass fishing. Over
Memorial weekend we had 19
people stay at the Nahma Inn
in Nahma, Michigan approximately 5 hours north from
Madison. We were promised a
chance at hundreds of smallies including 20 inchers and
possibly 5-6 lb fish and the
weekend didn’t disappoint.
The weather was perfect at 65
degrees and sunny the entire
time. Our accommodations
were perfect with outstanding
hosts including excellent food
in the restaurant, great beer in the bar, and an unbelievable price of only $45 a night for the room
which included breakfast and a sack lunch for everyone. Finally the fishing was incredible with our
weekend total at OVER 1000 fish!!!! The biggest fish caught was a 6.3 lbs 22 1⁄2 inch smallmouth
and too many to count 18-20 inch and 4-5 lb fish. My inexperienced crew of two dads and 2 kids
caught 53 our first day and we all had our personal bests with smallies over 20 inches and a one
kid catching his first northern at 32 inches. One boat with two experienced dads and 2 kids caught
216 fish in just one day! The hot baits were definitely tube jigs in green (goby) colors but the other
hot baits were Kalin’s 4-5” grubs in smoke or blue salt and pepper and finally craw imitators rigged
weedless. This certainly was a trip of a lifetime and one that will be done every year now with our
clubs! Mark your calendars for the 2 weeks approximately around Memorial Day and join us next year!

Big Bay Du Noc 2014 May 30 - June 1
The week after the Memorial Day crew cleaned
up at Big Bay Du Noc,
it was time for Tom
Raschke, Gary Schutte and RogerMatiasek, plus
Dave McCoy, his son and two other guys from the
Rockford club. The three YFC guys got on the water
about 4:00 pm on Friday, and easily boated 20
fish that evening. Almost all were over 17 inches.
On Saturday we also did well, with Gary leading the
fish count but with Tom catching a 21 1/2” Smallie. We
cleaned a bunch of fish that evening. On Sunday we
followed the suggestion of Dave Mc’Coy and tried the
Menominee River on the way home. We got a strange
assortment of Rock Bass, Pike, and Roger got a 26”
Walleye and an enormous Carp that almost took all his line.
Roger with 26” Walleye
When we heard thunder we pulled out and headed
south. Soon we were driving through a torrential rain,
which pretty much continued the rest of the way home.
We stopped near Oshkosh for dinner at a Perkins, and
ordered out meals. As we drank our beverages the waiter
came by to explain that the storm had knocked out ALL of
their cooking equiptment, so all they could serve us was
pie. So went over to Applebees where they had run out of
coffee and the TV’s were now out because of the storm.

You can’t see this to well, but
that fish must have been close to 36”.

Anyone Wanna Edit a Newsletter?
I’ve been creating the newsletter for seven years,
now with Stan Nichols as a backup. I am willing
to continue, but if anyone else would like to take
over, let me know. We currently create it with
Adobe InDesign, and I’d be glad to train someone.
