Welcome.....
Welcome to Specialized - The Big One 3.
This is the event that brings the
Specialized project to a close for 2014. This
years project is borne out of a respect for
one of the world's greatest musical outfits
Madness, the legendary Nutty Boys and
the part originators of British Ska. The
band burst onto the UK music scene in
1979 with their infectious cheeky chappy
rhythms and easy to relate to lyrics Their
legacy is an immense catalogue of tunes
that can make any artist shudder with
envy and their place in muic is still
prevalent on a world wide scale today.
Despite the break-up of the band in 1986,
1992 saw their monumental return to the
fray as they strove to celebrate their
heritage and legacy anniversary, which
was a massive success with their
legendary Finsbury Park gigs selling out
causing that famous registration on the
richter scale and since they packed them
in across the world. Madness themselves
have worked before with Teenage Cancer
Trust and the band were the focus of one
of the annual TCT big concerts in 2008. It
was after this and of course The Specials
headline there 2 years later that idea of
SPECIALIZED first arose, combined with
myself catching a TV programme about
the NHS and young people with serious
illness. What struck me more than
anything else was the work, the intense indepth work done by Teenage Cancer Trust.
Specially designed units aimed solely at
young people, specialist doctors dealing
with cancers contracted by young people,
they were really making a difference to
the kids. Cancer at any age is terrible,
there is no denying that, but to contract it
at an age where you are changing as a
person, finding the new you, exploring
new horizons, feeling new experiences,
forging relationships and what is
technically supposed one of the best times
of your life seems so unfair.
The 45 CD boxset album “ Specialized 3Mad Not Cancer” this year became a
reality, a 70+ track collection by fantastic
artists of all genres. I salute these acts
because of their enthusiasm and
dedication to the cause. They have been
OUTSTANDING. It really has seen a big
pulling together of people. We then has an
amazing promo tour around the country
again took place and the project continues
to grow at a rapid rate. Its still to go on on
digital download, and then there are 2
vinyl EPs to be released and the rest, as
before will be history. It has still surprised
me greatly how it all took off and captured
hearts and imaginations and it's a massive
THANK YOU to you who became involved
by buying it that it has became what it has
now.
For over 21 years Teenage Cancer Trust
has learnt a lot about what it's like to be a
young person with cancer - their unique
emotional, physical and practical needs.
Because Teenage Cancer Trust
understands, they can provide better care,
better services and hopefully a more
positive outcome for young people. Young
people can get some of the most rare and
aggressive forms of cancer. Their rapidly
changing bodies can work against them,
enabling the cancer to grow faster. The
emotional upheaval of adolescence can
make a cancer diagnosis even harder to
cope with. Without the work of Teenage
Cancer Trust, young people with cancer
would be treated alongside children or
elderly patients at the end of their lives.
Being away from your normal life, friends
and environment at such a vulnerable time
is the last thing they need. Teenage Cancer
Trust wants every young person with
cancer to get the best possible care and
support from day one. Cancer doesn't just
affect the patient. Its impact is felt by the
whole family and those around them. By
understanding how cancer affects their life
and providing a range of services that
supports those around them, Teenage
Cancer Trust is helping support all of the
young person's needs. They lead the world
in the care of young people with cancer.
Together with these young people, their
families and the passion of their
supporters, they're challenging healthcare
to improve and transform lives. Teenage
Cancer Trust treats young people as
individuals first, cancer patients second.
We know that providing a place that feels
a bit more 'normal' helps young people
cope with the devastation and chaos of
cancer and its gruelling treatments. So our
units are developed to provide the best
possible environment for patients, their
families and those providing their
treatment and care Their units are
designed to feel like a home from home,
so young people with cancer are able to
keep their lives on track. In doing this, the
role of a Teenage Cancer Trust unit goes
beyond medical treatment, extending to
everything they have to cope with. They
have spent over 20 years getting to know
young people with cancer and
understanding what they need. So you
might walk into a unit and find a game of
pool going on, or someone chatting to
friends on a webcam. It's all about
bringing young people with cancer
together. Whether getting to know each
other, telling their story or watching the
football, being able to talk to someone
your own age group, going through exactly
what you are going through, makes a huge
difference.
Specialized is proud to be working with
Teenage Cancer Trust and the sales from
all things Specialized will go to raise the
money that will enable the TCT to carry on
their amazing work, but let us not forget,
without the magnetic pull of Madness and
their fantastic music this couldn't have
happened. We are very pleased to have
some of the band with us at The Big One
3, and very pleased you could join us too.
Enjoy Yourself
Paul Willo – Specialized
Addictive Philosophy
Based in Derby, and with a couple of albums
behind them, Addictive Philosophy have
changed a lot since they formed way back in
the mists of time. Originally primarily a
punk band with ska and reggae hints, those
hints have gradually come to the fore until it
can be honestly said that they are one of
the premier skapunk bands around – well in
Derby anyway! Front man Gez l'Addictive is
currently taking the front man of seminal
punk rock band Anti-Pasti as a sideline, but
Addictive Philosophy remain his main focus, being only one of two founder members to
continue down the years, along with the man-mountain that is bass player Kev. Over the
intervening years members have come and gone, but the current six piece line up is the
one that defines their sound. Embracing the whole range of ska, rocksteady and reggae,
but played with punk enthusiasm and style, they have something to say, but they'd like
you to be dancing as they say it. They're not a covers band by any stretch of the word,
but they've become enthusiastic supporters of the Specialized project and are appearing
this year for the second time. Their debut set last year got them a lot of fans, and
Specialized attendees this year are assured of a somewhat lively performance.
The Amphetameanies first gigged in 1997, an unlikely
alliance of Glaswegian scooterboys, punker girls and
indie kids, united by a common love of 2-Tone and
wanting to make people dance. Within two years The
'Meanies were opening the main stage at T In The Park with a set of their of their own
songs while no less than Joe Strummer stood in the wings cheering them on. Their
chaotically tuneful live shows have since been seen far and wide as they've toured across
the UK and all over Europe, played more festivals than they can remember, and have
supported everyone from Rancid to The Skatelites, Toots and The Maytals to Franz
Ferdinand. No one's backstage booze has been safe... Alongside all that live knees-up, the
band has been working hard to record and release their own songs, throwing everything
they've got to adding to the world's ska playlist. To date, there's been eight vinyl singles
and two long players. Their first, 'Right Line In Nylons'. was a fast and furious collision of
ska beats, wonky melodies and colourful language, earning plays on Radio One and rave
reviews from the likes of Kerrang! and Scootering magazines. The second LP, 'Now!
That's What I Call..... The Amphetameanies' saw the songwriting go up a notch, as their
punky scratch was tempered with pop sensibility and playful lyricism, although still
peppered gratuitous swearing, again garnering interest from a selection of BBC DJs, and
reviewers dared to draw comparisons with Blondie, Dexys..... and Madness. Autumn
2014. The 'Meanies' album number three – 'Last Chance Bordello' – is finally ready to be
released, and there are gigs booked far and wide.
What can be said about Big Fat Panda that hasn't
been said before? Drawing from many past and
present Scottish ska bands, including Bombskare,
The G-Men, The Harringtons, Skalligators amongst
others, and fronted by the larger than life (and
aptly named) Big Andy, this ska monster tears it
up wherever they go. Not just musically
talented, their show is a treat for the eyes as much as for the ears and feet, with the
quiet and understated (not!) Andy capturing the attention with his stage persona whilst
the band play faultless upbeat ska dance anthems. Long time supporters of the
Specialized project, making their third appearance in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust,
their 2-Tone loaded sound is guaranteed to blow you out of your seat, and onto the
dancefloor. Rumour has it that there may also be a Panda release being bred in the
captivity of the recording studio at the moment, something that is a long time overdue
and which will no doubt be a killer
Legendary flying sax player Lee Thompson has
made a career out of playing in good time pub
rock covers bands when not on duty with
Madness. Going under many different names,
the band has a permanent core of Lee and his
son Daley who performs vocal duties, although
whistles, barking and occasional singing when
not blowing the sax. Their regular set includes a wide range of material, from traditional
pub rock numbers such as “Stuck In The Middle With You” through “Fu Man Chu” (as
released by Lee's other project, the Lee Thompson Ska Orchestra last year) to tracks by
his best known band, the mighty Madness, such as 'The Prince'. Those that saw the
performance of his other project here last year will acknowledge that it was one of the
highlights of the weekend, and this should carry on that tradition.
Billy Brown
Billy is another constand supporter of The Specialized Project,
having contributed regularly.
In his career as an accoustic singer/songwriter, he has supported
acts as diverse and REM, Ian Dury and The Boomtown Rats, and
has toured his band Friends Of Gavin across the UK and parts of
Europe. He's also appeared with various other artists on a
selection of recordings over the last few years, acquiring a
reputation as a solid performer.
In late 2013 he released a version of the classic Junior Marvin
track 'Police and Thieves' as a single
Bluebird Parade
You don't get a band who've come into
the Specialized Project earlier than
Bluebird Parade. The second track on
the first disk was their debut for us, and
have now contributed to each release to
date. Laid back and jazzy, they offer a
counterpoint to the energetic and
storming ska that regulars here have
come to expect from most bands on the
bill. Their influences come from a wide and eclectic range, from folk and blues through
to indie and pop, and with the line up featuring Jon Read, the former Specials trumpet
player who has also played with many of the legends of the Ska, Rocksteady and Reggae
scene – Prince Buster, Derrick Morgan, Susan Cadogan and others. This doesn't make
them a ska band though, their wide range of influences gives something much, much
bigger, with vocalist Ming Nagels working with the soundscape generated by the band.
Coming together in 2008, London's The Delegators mix together a heady brew of early
reggae and ska, with a healthy pinch of Motown-esque soul thrown into the mix, but
with a healthy respect for UK sensibilities. This six piece band is fronted by the soulful
powerhouse that is Janet Kumah, while the tight rhythms are held down by drummer
Arthur Beranger, bassist Ramy Eissa and Rick Venn on rhythm guitar. Matt Willshat (keys)
and Leon Vince (Sax) supply the tunes up front, while all contribute backing vocals as and
when required. They released their debut album, entitled 'All Aboard' in 2013, with BBC
Radio London's Robert Elms saying that it was one of his records of the year. Since
getting together, they've appeared on the same bill as many reggae and ska legends,
including The Pioneers, Dave Barker, Doreen Shaffer, Hepcat and The English Beat
amongst others, and opened the International Ska Festival in 2012. The band has also
appeared at the Glastonbury Festival four times, including opening for Lady Gaga.
Unfortunately they have recently decided to call it a day after their set this weekend, but
we at Specialized wish them all the best for their individual future careers, and hope that
one day we may see them return to the stage as a single unit.
One of the earliest of the Street Punk/Oi! bands, The Feckin Ejits
combined punk attitude with sharp lyics and a taste for excessive
drinking to create one of the most fondly remembered bands of the
early 80s. Mixing 100mph punk with just about anything that would
liven the sound up further, they ripped up the scene in a way few
bands have since. Tales of their gigs have become the stuff of legend,
and they shared the stage with many of the bands of the day, from
the UK Subs and The Vibrators to King Kurt and The Meteors, and onto Dr Feelgood and
The Pogues. If there was a good time to be had, there was a good chance The Feckin Ejits
would be on the bill somewhere. Five years of drunken punk behaviour followed, until
they decided it was time to call it a day. A final gig was arranged and over 400 people
jammed the venue to see the last stand. And that was it. Or at least it was until earlier
this year. The sad passing of guitarist Alex inspired the surviving members to reform for
the The Great Skinhead Reunion in Brighton this year, and then to appear here this
weekend, bringing a bit of old school chaos and good humour to the proceedings.
A collection of die-hard fans of Messers Weller,
Foxton and Buckler whose mission in life is to
recreate the sound of The Jam at their peak, and
they're great at what they do. Enthusiastically and
skilfully tearing into the sound of their heroes at
their peak, they are recognised as being one of – if
not THE – premier tribute acts to Wokings finest
hour. A wide and varied love of the Jam back
catalogue is a major part of the reason for this.
They're not content to settle for the best known
singles, they dig deep into album tracks and B-sides
alike, mixing up their set as needed and as
appropriate to the gig that they're booked for.
Gathering rave reviews wherever they play, The Jam DRC are a 'must see' whether you
were lucky enough to have caught the originals back in the day, or if you're new to them
and want to see what all the fuss was about, and their take on the spiky mod/punk sound
of the late seventies and early eighties will set the floor alight here.
SkaFace
From the wrong side of the tram tracks, with their name not in
lights, Skaface have made the long haul down from sunny
Blackpool in Lancashire to warm up your dancing shoes. A band
so big that they have their own post code, this ten piece ska army
is renown across the North West for their lively shows and
prodigious thirst. Away from supporting Specialized, they've also
done work for the British Heart Foundation, so give them a
roaring reception here this weekend.

the top bands and guest DJ's.
Nick Welsh, King Hammond
and Skaville UK
Your MC for the weekend, Nick Welsh
surely needs no introduction. A
seemingly permanent fixture on the
ska scene since the early 80s, he's
worked with anyone and everyone of
note on the scene, from legends such
as Laurel Aitken, Judge Dread, Dave
Barker and Lee 'Scratch' Perry,
through to second era bands such as
Bad Manners, The
Selecter and Longsy D
and many more. He's
also an in demand
producer of
soundtracks for film
and TV, with a
varied history
behind him.
Back in 1988, Nick
created an alter
ego, one of the
mysterious
classic reggae artist King Hammond.
Not an entirely serious creation, the
music did the talking, creating such
classics as 'Right On King Hammond'
and of course 'Skaville UK', which was
later covered to great success by Bad
Manners, and which also gave it's
name to his current project, and with
who he is performing this weekend.
He's also taken time to record several
albums under the King Hammond
name, the most recently being
released through his own label, E1.
Away from this though, he continues to
be one of Specialized's biggest
supporters, giving an awful lot
of his time
and
energy to this cause,
something we are immensely
appreciative of.

Winston Francis recorded at the
famed Studio One in Jamaica where
he collaborated with foremost reggae
artists including Dennis Brown and
Bob Marley. In 1997 UB40
released 'Mr Fix It' penned
by Winston and he
performed live with them at
Wembley in 1998. In
March 2008 he appeared
with Dennis Bovell and
Linton Kwesi Johnson at
the Barbican in London
as part of the London
Jazz Festival and in
May of that year was
inducted into the IRWAMA
Reggae Music Hall of Fame at the
Apollo Theatre in New York.
Tony Washington began his career
in Jamaica singing and playing
keyboards for the 'Cool Shakes'
before moving to London in 1961 and
signed to Island records in 1962. His
work included writing, playing and
producing some of the earliest Ska
recordings in the UK culminating in the
recording of 'My Boy Lollipop' with Millie
Small which became a huge hit for
Island.
Carl St. Clair began his
career as one of the
original Aces as a
backing singer for
Desmond Dekker. He had
a huge hit on the reggae
chart with his own song
'Guilty' in the 1980s. He
now owns his own recording
studio, radio station and
continues to perform as part
of the original Aces.
Count Prince Miller compered the
1969 Wembley Reggae Festival which
was the first major reggae event in the
UK. He had a hit with 'Mule Train' in
1971. His acting career includes regular
appearances on 'The
Desmonds' and 'What a Girl
Wants' for which he received
a Best Male Actor Award in
the 2006 Black Film Makers
Awards. He also appeared
in the first James Bond film
'Dr. No'
Jimmy James teamed up with the
Vagabonds in 1964 and recorded the
album 'Ska Time'. Since then
Jimmy's career has evolved into one
of the great
catalogues in
popular music. His
live shows are
legendary and he
continues to
perform, write
and record.
Dennis
Alcapone
was one of
the innovators of
'rap' music already using this
musical form in the 1970s working
with a range of producers including
Lee Perry and Joe Gibbs. He
appeared at the WOMAD Festival in
1989 and in June 2004 he presented at
the MOJO Awards.
The Pressure Tenants Formed in 1987
from local Leicester musicians to
perform as the backing band
for 'Laurel Aitken' aka, 'The
Godfather of Ska' on many UK
& European tours from 1990 2002
Today, 'The Pressure Tenants'
have reformed to pay homage to
their former mentor and leader and
to carry on the legacy and
foundations that he shared and laid
down for so many fans through his
music, bringing back the sounds that
could be heard in front rooms in many
West Indian households from days
gone by.
Tearing out of East London, The
Skints have created a massive
following on the UK reggae and ska
scenes for their top drawer
performances across the UK.
After coming together in 2005 as a
typical skapunk band, their sound
mellowed as their hard work improved
their musicianship and song-writing
skills.
Releasing their debut EP on the
legendary Do The Dog label in 2008,
they have regularly released new
material to the delight of their
dedicated fan base, who between
them managed to raise the funds for
the band to record their last album,
Part And Parcel, in eleven days as
opposed to the ninety days they'd
allowed themselves.
This album is widely accepted as
being their finest to date, bringing in
their disparate influences and
produced by 'name' producer Prince
Fatty who has worked with many of the
current crop of ska and reggae bands in
the UK. This also led to them working
with Dancehall artist Parly B to give their
sound a more authentic reggae feel,
with the earlier punk feel having almost
vanished from their sound.
They have also achieved a level of
notoriety thanks to covering Katy B's
Katy On A Mission which was widely
spread around the internet, taking on a
viral life of it's own, being played
frequently on Radio One and other
stations, and thus
giving the band
some well
deserved
national
exposure.

The Specialized Calendar is a separate project from the CD and gigs but we are definitely
under the same umbrella. The idea tied in well with my being enthused to help with the
Specialized Project. Previously I'd volunteered to be in a charity calendar and it hadn't
happened so this was the perfect chanced to appear in a calendar and raise some funds
for a project that I admired. It feels good to be enjoying myself and at the same time
giving something back and providing an opportunity for others to give back too.
In 2013 all was going well until I broke my shoulder before I'd done my photo shoot! I
went along to one with another model and we did a few practise shots but I was too stiff
to do the pose I wanted. Fortunately I had pictures from a previous shoot and was able
to use one of them.
The theme for last year was tastefully naked, the 2015 theme is a Madness theme,
though there is still a lot of tastefully naked men and women!
By far my most embarrassing moment has been walking round a photographer and his
wife's house wearing a corset, heels and hold ups, with full make up on. I needed them
to create a Dust Devil scene for the calendar. Fortunately they put me at ease despite
them never having done this type of photography before and I went on to do the shower
picture in their bathroom! Because of the lack of space in the bathroom we needed to
have the window wide open, so the neighbours have already had a sneak preview (or
rear preview…) of one of the months. Doing a fully naked picture was very scary, and
seeing myself naked was a bit weird too but all along I have kept the thought that as
Thank you!!!!!

Esperanza
Esperanza is a nine-piece ska collective
from Glasgow famed for live shows where
their infectious rhythm has the crowd
involuntarily jumping in time. In hectic
years of gigging around Scotland and
beyond, they have honed and perfected a
high-tempo set, combining superb selfpenned songs with a selection of ska
classics, until there isn't an ounce of fat
left on it. The quality of the band's live
shows has led to them being increasingly in demand: playing at the Glasgow
Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony; festivals up and down the country; and
sharing stages with some of the biggest names in ska, punk and reggae, including Toots
and the Maytals, The Skatalites, Bad Manners, The Beat, The Selecter, Neville Staple, The
Undertones, Fishbone and The Toasters.
Heading out of Newquay, Ten Bob Notes are a band
steeped in the 2-Tone sound, but playing their own
material. Nine members strong, they manage that
tricky mix of witty lyrics and serious issues in the
tradition of Madness, The Specials and The
Selecter. Driving guitar riffs and stinging brass
melodies power the band along, with the unusual
sight of an upright slap base providing the rhythm
that underpins the ska sound. Recently expanded
to a nine piece outfit, they are here for your
skanking pleasure, with songs that may well be
jammed in your ear for the next week!
The lights flickered. The moon was eclipsed.
Silence fell. A sudden burst of brass. A kick ass
rhythm. The Bighead had arrived.
No one knew where they came from, other than a
mysterious town called 'Nottingham'. But people
knew they were here to make them dance, and so
dance they did.
An infectious Roots Rock Reggae sound, a stage
full of single minded musicians. Enjoy.
Roddy Radiation &
The Skabilly Rebels
What can be said about Specialized
President Roddy Radiation?
I'm sure we all know that Mr Byers burst
to fame with 2-Tone originators The
Specials, tearing up the stage with his
own brand of Rock and Roll flavoured ska
licks before forming The Tearjerkers when
The Specials called it a day.
From there, he moved onto a harder rock
and roll and rockabilly sound with The
Bonediggers, before returning to the
sound that made him famous with The
Specials Mk2, getting together with exThe Specials members Neville Staple,
Lynval Golding, and Horace Panter to
record the King Of Ska album with
Desmond Dekker and several other
carefully selected musicians.
He remained with the band through their
next releases – Today's Specials and the
excellent Guilty Until Proved Innocent
providing his distinctive and striking guitar
sound to these albums. Two other albums
recorded at the same time as the King Of
Ska album – Skinhead Girl and Conquering
Ruler were also released featuring Roddy's
distinctive guitar.
Eventually this version of the band went their
separate ways, and it was a long wait before
most of the original line eventually reunited
for touring purposes to great success around
the globe.
Since 2003 though, Roddy has worked with
Sam Smith, Matt Hart, Jaymie Jones, Mac
and Drew Stansall as the Skabilly Rebels,
and in early 2014 he decided that he needed
to give this band more attention and sadly
called it a day with the kings of 2-Tone.
Since then, they've increased their fan base
with every show, and can guarantee that this
set will blow you into next week.
Taking the historic roots of ska and bring it into the new
millenium, The Ska Dogs are the bringers of 2-Tone and
other classics to the Southampton area. Expect tracks
from The Specials and Madness, The Selecter and The
Beat, and versioning tracks from further back too,
they're a welcome addition to the Specialized roster of
bands playing here this weekend. There's no pretence,
they just want to recall the glory days of the early
eighties, and it's fair to say that they do a damn fine job
if it too.
T H E TA LK S
Currently one of the most talked about bands on the ska scene, The Talks from Hull are
widely recognised as one of the biggest new talents around at the moment.
Taking the 2-Tone sound as their roots, they've thrown in elements of US ska and JA
reggae and created a unique blend that drags you to the dancefloor, as attendees at their
gigs and performances at events from ska festivals to scooter rallies will attest. An
appearance on TV's 'Hollyoaks' also helped raise their profile, an event that front man Pat
claims was the longest day of his life!
After testing the water successfully with a clutch of EPs and downloadable releases,
they've just released their 'proper' debut album, having had a couple of compilations of
their earlier material released previously, but Commoners, Peers, Drunks and Thieves
encapsulates their
sound to perfection
and is a great jumping
on point for new fans.
The Talks have also
been supporters of
Specialized since its
inception, either
contributing to the
albums or performing
at benefit gigs and The
Big One itself, and
we're glad to welcome
them back again this
year.
AT THIRTY-FIVE
In the late seventies when they were first
starting out somewhat shambolically in just
Mike's bedroom, little did these seven men
know where they would be in the year
2014.When you look at them today you can
see the culmination of their talents over the
last 35 years in the work they are doing now.
They've learnt a lot, they've sampled life,
taken everything in, and worked hard,
creating draft after draft, churning out
popular hits of joy, to the point where
Madness can proudly say that in 2014 they
are one of Englands truly moderately
successful breweries. Oh and before they did
all these beers, (Gladness, Night Boat,
Lovestruck) they used to do music. Really
great music.
Music so good it's worthy of so many cover
versions being done of it and whole
weekenders of focus poured upon on it. How
did Madness get here?
Most crucially they left that bedroom,
gravitating next to a garden. It was Si Birdsall's
garden, a small step in the right direction at
least, playing a gig at his party. A dentists
basement followed (their rehearsal room),
then a school assembly hall and a flower
shop, before a lie about being a jazz band, got
them regularly into a Camden pub for the first
time. Here they really felt at home and things
really started to happen. Via the up stairs of a
boot shop they were catapulted into BBC
Television Centre, for the world to tune in and
see. The Specials and Clive Langer then
helped them get into a recording studio, Dave
Robinson invited them into his Wedding, then
he put them onto a record label, that in turn
placed them regularly in the pop charts, on
record players and radio stations the nation
over and beyond. A mass of repetition of
these kinds of places continued until the
success changed into big arena's, large fields,
earthquake zones, race courses, forests and a
few ships too, showing that no matter where
Madness were put, they could be a success.
Even at the happy level of a band that could be
said to be "Big", no one could have predicted
their story would take them onto the roof of
Buckingham Palace, and onto a truck in a
sports stadium, beamed up onto satellites
and back down all around the world as
London closed The Olympics. So Madness
took a bow. Closing Chapter 10 of their story
called "oui oui si si ja ja da da" at Alexander
palace with the people's version of "our
house" sang with fans back on the ground.
Specialized: Mad not Cancer, arrived to focus
on Madness at just the right time, a
celebration of their 200 songs thus far, the
excitement for it fandom lands uninterrupted
at the pause before Chapter 11 of Madness
really starts. A new album is promised, Suggs,
Woody & Nick, Chris and Lee, all report or
have been witnessed having started writing a
few songs. While the key to Madness archives
turned in October allowing "Sunshine Voice"
and "Lost my Head" to escape from April 1979
rehearsals onto One Step Beyond 35th year
edition. To tide fans over as the band
separated and pursued solo missions. (Two of
which are at this weekender.)
SUGGS
He's completed his own solo tours of his life
story this year, and seen the growing success
of his autobiography "That Close" fly off the
shelves of bookshops, as well as bringing out a
compilation album of his favourite tunes as
"The Suggs Selection", and performed his
own evening for Pancreatic Cancer.
CARL
After inventing the "Madhead" for all
Madness fans to embrace, Cathal Smyth
parted from Madness this summer to pursue
his solo album, nine years in the making.
A comfortable man he describes as urban folk,
or a relationship album. Piano and strings,
heartfelt lyrics and mood mix with, beyond it
now, healing charms of uplifting love songs.
LEE
"I'm spinning plates" Lee will tell you of his
work this year. After a chart successful album
with Mark Bedford in the form of The Ska
Orchestra's The Benevolence of Sister Mary
Ignatius, the band this year reached
Glastonbury streaming level with it. They
started the year on Jools Hootenanny, and
released with Dawn Penn the new mix of
Bangarang as a single. It's the Silencerz that
perform a few of those tunes here for you at
The Big One, though, Lee's local band with son
Daley who also perform some Madness,
alongside, Beatles covers, and 70's classics
from Paul Simon to Ian Dury. Thommo even
found time to revive Crunch! this year, playing
as The Nutty Boy, and appeared on Radio Two
with Kaiser Chief Ricky and others reworking
Rock around the clock.
WOODY
The Magic Brothers, Woody's band are here at
The Big One for you enjoyment. They debuted
their first line up at The Dublin Castle
residency this year, and now have moved to a
second formation, playing their first album
The Magic Line, 70's rock and more influences
premiate, funky big songs, their second album
is complete ready for release soon, this band
move the fastest down the line.
BEDDERS
Beyond The Ska Orchestra, Mark's interest in
music is Jazz. He was the only one not lying
when Madness first played The Dublin
Castle then! A modestly free residency at
Indo in Whitechapel London continues,
as does intellectual debate on
Near FM, with Terry Edwards
and Simon Charterton on drums, they are
slowly making a record, expect it on the
Sartorial label.
CHRIS
Sitting instead in the producers role more so
than being a solo musician these days. Chris
has hooked up with new young hope Gorgeous
George. Gypsy folk with a modern street
approach, he recently appeared in their video
of "Girl's Night Out"
MIKE
Mike played keyboard in a school band again
this year, along with Thommo at their old seat
of learning, (the one they probably used to
bunk off from!)Mike has a band he himself of
course. It's called Madness. Outside of that,
he's newly remarried, maintains a Buddhist
focus, and shows a deep interest in world
affairs. His band Madness will soon tour again
in the UK "The Madhead" this December and
beginning first at next weekends House of Fun.
Danger and excitement! Madhead will
hopefully start slowly to usher in Chapter 11.
Their last two albums have been very
successful again in charting, and lots of radio
play. Norton Folgate was called a masterpeice
and had a unified Kinks/Beatles classic brit pop
feel and a capital city focus. Where as Oui Oui
Si Si Ja Ja Da Da expanded the bands
songwriting teams and style even further, with
dread raps, and mariachi moments mixing
with the mowtown and classic pop, and
their east end pub rock roots. The next
album loosely marks a trilogy of
returned to form Madness. Thanks
Mike for having such a brilliant
bedroom, that all this should
come out of it in 35 years.

Urang Matang
Heading out of the Lothian region of Scotland, this
reggae, ska and world music mashup make a
welcome return to Specialized with their laid back
sound. Expect cool jazz influenced grooves over
a solid reggae beat, expect to move your
dancing feet, these rhythmic primates know
how to have a good time and can blow up a
storm and then take it easy. Three albums to the
good – 'Origins Of The Species', 'Platinum' and
their current long player 'Little Munki' – and all
are worth tracking down. UK originated late night
reggae never sounded any better than their most
recent release, and received rave reviews in magazines,
with Scootering calling it “..a faultless production”. Over the years
they've supported a huge range of bands from The Skatelites to The South (the renamed
Beautiful South) to rave review, and have a constantly growing fanbase.
Erin Bardwell Collective
Almost unique on the UK music scene, the Erin Bardwell Collective are a band that
specialises (if you'll excuse the pun) in recreating the sound of the late sixties/early
seventies, that period where Rocksteady became Reggae.
Playing entirely their own material – when not recording for this project, at any rate – the
organ driven sound echoes the sound of Trojan Records and Studio One.
With eleven years of playing together, and releasing material through their own 'Pop-ATop' label, they've made their mark as a band, being picked up for national airplay by BBC
Radio Six,
and supporting many Reggae and Ska
legends
from Noel Davis through Roy Ellis
and
Symarip to By The Rivers and
Pama
International.

TONY CLASS
There aren't many people on the scooter
scene who are counted as legends, and even
fewer where their reputation isn't directly
related to scooters themselves. The late, great
Tony Class was one such man. From the ;late
seventies on, until his untimely death from
cancer earlier this year, he was arguably the best
known DJ the scene has ever had.
Born too late for the original mod era, but with an
overwhelming love of music from that time, he
found himself pre-empting the mod revival of the
late seventies, putting on discos focusing on the
music he loved before anyone else had thought
that it may be due a re-examination, and it can be
fairly said that his enthusiasm was one of the
building blocks of
the scooter scene's explosion in the early eighties. From there, Tony was involved in the
founding of Classic Club International (CCI), a breakaway scene from the mainstream
scooter scene, focussing mainly on the mod and soul side of things, a hugely successful
venture that kept him in the scootering eye.
In later years, he was a highly respected and – naturally – in demand DJ across the
reunited scooter scene, from major events to house parties, he was always there to play
his unique mix of sounds but never too full of himself not to ask what a new sound was if
it caught his well tuned ear during another DJ's set. About two years ago, Tony (along
with his best mate Wolfie) gained national notoriety via Channel Four's “Coach Trip” TV
show, where the pair of them treated the reality show as trans-European pub crawl,
managing to get wasted wherever they washed up.
On May 10th this year though, the legend was laid low by cancer for the last time. His
funeral attracted hundreds of scooter riders, there to show their last respects to this
legend, bringing the A4 to a standstill as his cortege passed, such was the respect the
scene had for the man, almost forty years after his first events. To this end we owe a
huge debt of gratitude to Frank and Emma of South West Backline for providing the
drums and amplifiers free of change for the Big One Three. Frank turned down all offers
of payment and has decided to donate the equipment in tribute to their lifelong friend
www.southwestbackline.co.uk
Moonstomping their way through a select set of skinhead
skanking stormers, St Alban based covers band The
Iconics live and breathe 2-Tone. Take the edge of the
Specials, add in some fun from the early Madness tunes,
and then apply some attitude from the punk bands, and
you have the essence of what the Iconics are about.
They're also huge supporters of the Specialized project,
already having raised around £5,000 for the Teenage
Cancer Trust, and we're pleased to welcome their lively take on ska classics from the
roots to the 2-Tone era. Musically as tight as they come, The Iconics will drag you to your
feet and leave you wanting more.
The Simmertones have been together since 2007 and
have quickly become festival favourites in their native
South West UK, building a strong following across the
region's music venues. The band's first album
"Presenting the Simmertones, Volume 1”, featuring a wild
reworking of the Dr Who theme tune was recorded under
the guidance of Richard Digby Smith who has previously worked with the likes of Bob
Marley, Led Zeppelin, Sparks and Free at Island Records. The album picked up great
reviews and airplay throughout 2010 in the UK, Europe and beyond, including plays on
Mikey Davies' show on BBC Radio 1 and Mark Lamarr's “God's Jukebox” on Radio 2. The
band returned to the studio in early 2011 to record a new EP. Made up of 2 new
Simmertones originals and 2 classic covers, this recording also features guitar
contributions from Steve Cradock of Ocean Colour Scene/Paul Weller fame and solo
performer in his own right. The Simmertones' latest release 'Something For The
Weekend?' has won Best Album of 2013 at the South West Music Awards!
Sal Policetti of Sonseed
Those of you that keep an eye on social media will be aware of Sonseed, the straighter
than straight edged Christian band from New York. Their track 'Jesus Is A Friend Of Mine'
has proven to be an Internet ska monster, the original YouTube clip now heading towards
8 million views. To put this in context, the most most viewed video of Madness' 'One Step
Beyond' is only 1.5 million in front. It really is that popular. What most people don't
realise (although the hair should be a giveaway!) is that the video is 34 years old, being
recorded at the height of the 2-Tone mania that swept the world. Unfortunately the band
didn't survive, splitting in 1983, but singer and
bassist Sal Polichetti joined with NY ska/swing band
'Tri-State Conspiracy' to perform a live version of the
anthem, which was filmed and can also be found on
the Tube of You. Specialized are pleased to
welcome Sal to the stage for his only UK gig, backed
by SkaFace, so give him a warm Devon welcome!

Wolfman Radio began as a one-show project 4 years ago with a ska show, The Last Train To Skaville, a
show that is still on air to this day, every Wednesday 8pm. In many ways it has become the flagsgip show
for WMR, a representation of the quality broadcasting that the station strives to maintain and which
contributes to its continued success.
Last Train To Skaville, however, is not typical of Wolman Radio’s entire output. Despite some
people’s misperception WMR is NOT a Ska station. A huge part of the success of WMR is down to its
dedication to a multitude of genres with specialist shows featuring soul, reggae, blues, country, punk as
well as dedicated shows to love songs, 80s. alternative genres and unsigned and independent artists.
Each presenter at WMR who presents a specialist genre show does so with a knowledge and passion for
the specific style of music they play, which is another contributory factor to WMR’s continued success.
The fact that WMR is by no means a one-note station makes Specialized the perfect partners for us to
work alongside. Specialized, as a charitable music project started life deeply rooted in the ska scene,
inspired by The Specials support for the Teenage Cancer Trust leading to the release of the first album, a
collection of modern takes on Specials classics! That album, and the subsequent The Beat and
Madness releases have featured bands and artists not associated in anyway with the ska/reggae scene.
There are, of course, reggae/ska artists featured on the albums but they also styles as diverse as punk.
dance, rock, country, accoustic amd even hip hop! That diversity enables Specialized to appeal to an
audience wider than just the ska/2 Tone genre, which in turn makes WMR perfect to be honoured as
being the official radio station of Specialized! WMR and Specialized in perfect harmony! From Ska and
Beyond!
Many radio stations, online ones and otherwise, often use the tagline “More music variety” in their
promotion and WMR certainly use it also. In many cases it is just a stock phrase, used lazily by radio
stations when what they really mean is the same handful of songs played over and over to fill the time
before the next section of insane chat and advertiser’s messages. More music variety with WMR means
just that with out varied shows specializing in a variety of music genres presented by music lovers, unique
in their own individual broadcasting styles but forming part of the recognisable identity of WMR that has
been built over the last 4 years that brings listeners coming back for more time and time again.
Its not just about the music of course, WMR entertains in other ways with live studiocams, show
competitions, a station newsletter with contributions from our presenters, appearances at live gigs and
