CraFT beer overkill
Don’t get me wrong, there are some great craft beers
out there, but this market seems to be becoming far
too overcrowded. For every great craft beer, there’s a
hundred bad ones that taste like tar. Don’t think you can
fool us by giving them ridiculous names and changing
the colouring slightly. They still taste minging.

Electronic dance music has been around since the days
of Kraftwerk in the 1970s, but this hasn’t stopped greedy
record companies cashing in, and acting like they invented
it. Ministry of Sound have just released their latest offering
of cheap and cheerful dance-pop-pap, that all sounds the
same; Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat is guaranteed to give you a
headache, and that’s just from looking at the garish front
cover, never mind the generic ditties contained within.

Crowd oF FavourS
This gem of a bar popped up with little fanfare last year,
and has gradually built up a loyal following. As well as
serving a decent range of booze and tasty burgers, they
have some great nights on during the week. Tuesday is
classic movie night, so bring your friends and enjoy the
free popcorn and a classic on their downstairs projection
screen.

major reason - Sunday
Roast!
There aren’t many better
feelings than waking up on
Sunday; hungover, and realising
that feeling can be cured by a
selection of meat, veg, potatoes
and loads of gravy!
My current favorite for a roast
is the newly opened ‘Shears
Yard’. Why? It’s only a minute
or so from my flat on Call Lane
and secondly, the food – it is
properly brilliant! I’m much

After a slew of over hyped films that didn’t quite deliver,
this one stood out and instantly goes into my list of
all-time favourites. How critics can say it glamourises
greed and drug taking is beyond me. Anyone that thinks
crawling across the floor whilst frothing at the mouth,
being dumped by your wife and imprisoned for fraud
is glamorous needs their head checking. Di Caprio and
Scorcese prove that they have more comic chops than
most imagined. My favourite film since Django.

There’s
a
new
boy
in
town! Saying that he is an
amazing young dancer is an
understatement. His versatility
and experience span from
performing in contemporary
and ballet companies. He has
won dance championships,
attended courses
in New
York and has won the first
Finnish ‘So You Think You Can
Dance’ televised competition.
He is one of the 10-strong
‘Phoenix
Dance
Theatre’
ensemble. A highly acclaimed
and
world-renowned
contemporary dance company.
I can remember the first time
I saw him on-stage in ‘Melt’;
choreographed by their artistic
director Sharon Watson. Story
telling and honesty in every
move drew me to Sam. His
love and passion for dance
shines through and he doesn’t
feel guilty about sharing it.
At this moment, the whole
company is preparing for their
new exciting show. Opening in
February 2014. Am I thrilled?
Without a doubt! A
world
premiere of two new exciting
dance works and also a chance
to witness a company classic.
One afternoon, I decided to
drop in on one of their gruelling
rehearsals.
I
wasn’t
just
greeted by his friendly smile
but a big banner of him draped
across the buildings foyer. Am
I impressed? Who wouldn’t be!
As Sam guided me in to
the studio, I witnessed the
contagious passion and love
these dancers have for their
craft and their constant pursuit
of excellence. The studio was
like a sacred place of learning
and giving. There was a
generous feeling of openness
and trust between the dancers
and their rehearsal director;
Tracey Tinker. I know all the
dancers are working hard, I
see it and hear it. The sweat
and labours of their dance
routines give rise to an intense
exciting
palpable
energy.

Singers, artists and performers
joined forces in a glittering
spectacle at Europe’s newest
shopping complex, to give
the public a taste of what to
expect.
A carnival snail, woolly bikes,
choirs and brass bands
emerged from shops to
join band Hope & Social on
the concourse for a debut
performance of the official
Yorkshire Festival song, The Big
Wide.
They were watched by
shoppers and supporters of the
Yorkshire Festival 2014 which
began its procession from
Angelica through the complex
to watch the performance en
route to Holy Trinity Church.
They are all part of the full
programme of events which
were announced for the first
time, as the county gears up
for Yorkshire Festival 2014 – the
first ever to precede the Tour
de France in its 111 year history.
The festival is the brainchild
of Welcome to Yorkshire and
has been backed by Yorkshire
Water, Arts Council England
and Yorkshire local authorities.
Out of almost 400 bids, 47
projects were commissioned to
be officially part of the 100-day
festival - which will also include
hundreds of fringe events.
Highlights include:
Los Angeles-based sculptor
Thomas Houseago, from Leeds,
has been tasked to create two
magnificent, giant sculptures
for Leeds city centre and the
Yorkshire Sculpture Park. These
will be his first commissions for
his home county and the first
ever commissions to be made
by the Yorkshire Sculpture
Triangle.
Phoenix Dance Theatre, in
Leeds, will join forces with
Scottish public arts charity
NVA to create the world’s first
Ghost Peloton, led by Phoenix
artistic director Sharon Watson
and NVA creative director
Angus Farquhar. Ghost Peloton
incorporates a riding team of
50 road racers, stunt cyclists
and large-scale projection of
dancers all utilising unique
remote controlled light suits
to produce a stunning live
choreography. Ghost Peloton
builds on the worldwide
success of Speed of Light,
which was first commissioned
for the London 2012 Olympics.
An appeal has now gone out
to Yorkshire cyclists to get
involved in this once-in-alifetime experience.
West Yorkshire Playhouse will
host “Beryl” written by TV star
Maxine Peake to celebrate
the extraordinary sporting
achievements of Morley cyclist
Beryl Burton. Beryl is a specially
commissioned adaptation from
Ms Peake’s acclaimed 2012
Radio 4 play and marks her
stage writing debut.
Award-winning director Daisy
Asquith teams up with cult
musician Bill Nelson to create
a new film as part of a series
of screenings to be shown on
10 outdoor screens in stunning
locations across Yorkshire. Tour
de Cinema presents fiction and
documentary films (including
Alan Bennett’s rarely seen
BBC film ‘A Day Out’, about a
Halifax cycling club; and Jarvis
Cocker’s blazing soundtrack for

Leeds - a showcase of live music.
Local acts are ready to ‘Rock You!’
Last year we had 1975 in the Cockpit and we had 2000
people queuing up the road. It is a shame that not everyone could get in but I think that this also helps people see
what the alternatives. We have loads of other bands on at
the same time which people can go and discover.
Live at Leeds is a festival that still has music at its heart;
it caters to true music lovers and has thankfully avoided
attracting crowds who are there just to be seen.
We do try to tweet live what is going on, so we will send
out messages letting people know 2 hours before 1975 go
live that the Cockpit is at capacity. We also put on gigs
throughout the year so people who play at Live at Leeds
might play Leeds University a month later so we give
people another chance to see acts they may have missed
out on.
Every May Bank holiday for the last seven years the
festival has created a buzz across the city, drawing an
eclectic mix of fans to venues ranging from the Pretty
Green Store, to the iconic Brudenell Social Club. With the
line-up to this years event now revealed it looks like this
year will be no different.
The festival not only showcases a diverse range of venues, it continues its diversity in the acts that it books. Covering a spectrum of genres, Live at Leeds aims to appeal
to all. The festival also showcases up and coming acts as
well as headline names. Local bands such The Mexannines, previous winners of Centre stage competition, will
appear alongside current chart toppers Clean Bandit’s on
this years line-up. It is this mixture that has established
the festivals reputation for picking the most exciting new
talent. A testament to these clever bookings can be seen
when looking through the acts that have played in years
gone by. Artists such as Alt- J and Ed Sheeran have previously graced stages across the event, playing to no more
than 100 people before they became household names.
You book a lot of local bands, how do you decide who to
put on the line-up?
I am very into the scene here so I will know a lot of
bands already. We always need supports and so part of
the way we do it is by saying “oh this band have sent us
something or my mates have talked about this band, let’s
put them on the show.”
We have got bands that have played the futuresound
competition and support slots. Stuff like that is where
we can really find who the best talent is. Every band that
sends something over will get listened to, so yeah there is
a lot of research into what is good locally.
Although the focus of Live at Leeds falls mainly on the
Saturday, this jam packed day of gigs is sandwiched by
other events organised by the Futuresound team. Kicking
things off on Friday Radio One DJ Jen Long will be
guest speaker at Leeds college of music. The weekend
will be rounded up on Monday when promoters and band
members take to the pitch to show off their skills ( and
try to keep down the pints) in a football tournament held
at Goals.
We caught up with Ben Lewis, one of Live at Leeds
organisers to talk about the festivals success and its plans
for the future.
Live at Leeds has always been a massive success, do
you think that part of that is down to the city and venues
embracing it with open arms?
Yeah, other cities have festivals like this but there is
definitely something about Leeds where everyone wants
to muck in and be involved; over the years we have really
developed that. Famously it has been a bad weekend for
a lot of bars but since Live at Leeds it has just got better
and better.
Live at Leeds is our way of being able to showcase the
whole city, it is really nice. I think now in Leeds there
are so many people into music and wanting to find about
these venues. I think that really contributes to the success
of the festival.
One of the benefits of Live at Leeds is getting to see
big names in intimate venues however, because of the
limited capacity sometimes people aren’t always able to
see bands they want. What would you say to people who
bring this up?
With the festival growing from strength to strength it is
inevitable that the event will grow in scale, how do you
think this will affect a festival that holds its events in
small venues?
If we are wanting to expand there will be places in the
city we would want to look at and the new arena wouldn’t
be ruled out. It is good that there is space to expand if we
need to.
But fans of the Live at Leeds format don’t need to worry
as Ben added; “If the arena was a consideration it would
be much more like the millennium square one off kind
of event, rather than using it as a venue for the festival
during the day.”

It’s almost Spring and
here at Leeds United, we
are incredibly pleased to
announce the success of
our Grassroots Ticketing
Scheme.
Since we began our reengagement with the City of
Leeds to create a family friendly
experience at Elland Road, we
have been overwhelmed and
inundated by requests from
local youth groups, schools
and Junior football teams. It
has created memories that will
last a lifetime with Juniors and
Adults alike.
We are now looking to
reach out to other groups
such as Scouts, Cubs,
Guides, dance groups and
many others to enhance
the family environment.
So far this season, the
Grassroots Ticketing Scheme
has had over 100 teams
attending our home games
and is going from strength
to strength. With over 7000
people through the turnstiles,
it has generated in excess of
£16,000 Cash-Back.
Given that local (Grassroots)
football is on the decline (as
broadcast on the local news
recently), the much needed

some essentials for clubs to
survive.
