David Orchid Collection Update I am writing this to give you, the membership, an update on my progress on the project of the annotated bibliography of the Reginald S David Orchid Collection in the Special Collections Dept of the Love Library at SDSU. I asked for a grant to reimburse me for two hundred hours of my time from the Garner Educational Fund. Thus far I have put in a few hours a week when I am not working fulltime. I am currently entering books that had been cataloged since that last time I worked on the annotated bibliography. I discovered that I could do this phase of the project at home since the library's' catalogue is online. I am currently entering the call number, author, name, publishing information and technical description for each book. This might go better if I was a better typist, but alas, I am not, and am doing the best I can. There are over 2000 books in the collectoion covering a myriad of interesting orchid related topics. Once I have finished this part of the I will return to SDSU and give a brief description of each Orchid Growers Want to upgrade the quality of your potting mix? There is a solution—Maidenwell Diatomite! Mined from fresh water diatom deposits in Australia, heated to 1400 degrees, and uniformly graded. Maidenwell Diatomite is ideally sized for your orchids. Fantastic results have been had by mixing 2 parts diatomite and 1 part bark or coconut chunks. $22.00 per bag and available in three sizes; small, medium and large. Are you using De-ionized or Reverse Osmosis water? Try my custom fertilizer blend—it is specifically designed for pure water. Sunset Valley Orchids Fred Clarke 1255 Navel Place, Vista, CA 92081 760-639-6255 [email protected] book to give a better idea of what each book is about. This has turned into a monumental task, and there is honestly no telling how long this will take me. The only sure thing is that it will take considerably longer than the 200 hours I asked to be compensated for. This has sort of became a hobby and I will work on it until it is complete no matter how long this takes me. Once I get past the current phase of my project I will provide more reports to our newsletter to inform you better about the books that we can utilize to learn about about the plants we love so much. Here are two samples of what I plan to accomplish: QK495 O64 A465 Ames, Oakes. An enumeration of the orchids of the United States and Canada, Boston, The American Orchid Society, 1924 viii, 120 p. 22 cm In the following enumeration of the orchids of the United States and Canada, an attempt has been made to include every valid species with its variants, and thus to present, for the first time, a comprehensive survey of our orchid flora.” Reginald S Davis donated this book. This book is signed by the author on July 4th 1930, and was presented by the Trustees of the American Orchid Society. QK495 .O64 H46 Henderson, M. R. and G. H. Addison. Malayan Orchid Hybrids, Singapore, Government Printing Office, 1963. 191 p. ill. (part col.) 28 cm Limiting the scope of the work to orchids that have been either raised or commonly grown in the Malayan region of the world, this text aims to educated enthusiasts about specific orchid hybrids. The most important hybrids discussed here are Arachnis, Renanthera, Vanda, Dendrobium and Spathoglottis. Notes on cultivation and propagation of various groups are included. A large number of black and white photographs are provided to help the reader through the catalogue of genera. There are many, many books on huge variety of orchid related topics and I will bring more of these to you in the near future. This scenario may be familiar, but frenzied mobs aren’t the focus of this web site. OrchidMania’s primary focus is supporting grassroots AIDS prevention and relief organizations, as well as encouraging orchid cultivation and conservation. The web site contains information about the organization and its efforts, plus a good deal of material about orchids. The “How to Grow Orchids” section has extensive recommendations for good orchid culture, the “References” page includes recommended books about orchids, and the “Conservation” portion of the web site explains the need for conservation and describes several different approaches that can be used. One of my favorite parts of this web site deals with species orchids and their characteristics. Several hundred genera are included, and many of the listings contain detailed information about the species, including appearance, culture and conservation status. The icing on the cake is the “Currently Blooming” page, which contains beautiful orchid photos by OrchidMania president and web site co-manager Eric Hunt. If you feel the need for a little OrchidMania, just point your browser to “orchids.org”. We couldn’t have done it without you! The SDCOS Conservation Committee would like to thank everyone who contributed to the success of our sales booth at this year’s Orchid Show. Thanks to the generosity of a wonderful group of donors and the hard work of a great group of volunteers, we raised $4,300 to support orchid conservation!! Ron Kaufmann Chair, SDCOS Conservation Committee Donations were provided by a number of people, including Billy Baker, Loren Batchman, Bruce Berg, Tom Biggart, Rex Foster Orchids, Polly Fox, Charley Fouquette, Siv Garrod, Cindy Hill, Dave Hoffmaster, Ron Kaufmann, Barbara Menzie, Tom Osborn, Gene & Barbara Payne, Harry Polis, Ida Rigby, Tom & Barbara Smith, Anita & Jerry Spencer, Peter Tobias, Jim Wright, the San Diego Zoo, and several anonymous donors. The Spring show would not have been as successful without the tremendous efforts of our volunteers who collected donated plants, planned and set up the sales booth, and staffed it throughout the show. These hard working people included Irma Adams, June Andersen, Bruce Berg, Marga Fountain, Lenore Haack, Shirley Hall, Dave Hoffmaster, Ron Kaufmann, Betty Kelepecz, John Kidwell, Rose Krejci, Lan Lin, Eddy Marks, Pam Peters and Paul Tuskes. Special thanks go to Dave Hoffmaster for transporting donated plants and John Kidwell for his outstanding work at the sales booth throughout the weekend. P.S. My apologies if I’ve accidentally left off the names of any donors or volunteers. Please contact me, and I’ll make sure to acknowledge your contributions in next month’s newsletter. Cym. It is a free dinner to all society members, and is yet another “perk” of being an SDCOS member! Guests are invited, but will be asked to pay a $20 fee at the door. Don’t forget to RSVP to Genie Hammond at (619) 422-2235 if you’d like to attend! Another thing you should talk to Genie about, if you’re interested in it, is that the SDCOS now has a nominating committee for new board members. If you’d like to suggest a possible board member, please let Nay Nay Stewart, Rose Alesi, Ann Tuskes, or Edith Galvan know. In case any of you didn’t realize it, the SDCOS Mailing List is to be used for official SDCOS purposes only; namely for disseminating information about San Diego Orchid Society-related activities, and is not to be used by outside agencies conducting non-orchid society business. As for your plants, keep them as moist as possible, and increase the amount of fertilizer you’ve been giving them for these warmer growing months. Don’t forget to guard vigilantly against sunburn by watering more or moving plants to more protected areas.
