WELCOME TO THE SEASIDE SUMMER
CONCERT SERIES 2016!
A
s your borough president, I have the pleasure of hosting this series of free
concerts each summer. This year the shows will be presented at the new
Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk, the permanent home of the
Seaside Summer Concert Series. It is wonderful to share my passion for the arts
with you and your family as well as celebrating our shared commitment to our
unity as One Brooklyn.
Brooklyn has always been the place to enjoy great music. We are the Brooklyn of
Barry Manilow, from Williamsburg; the Notorious B.I.G., from Clinton Hill; Carole
King, from Sheepshead Bay, and Aaliyah and Jay Z, from Bedford-Stuyvesant.
Summer in Brooklyn offers many opportunities for fun with family and friends, like
bike rides in Prospect Park or swimming in Brighton Beach. There are a number of
exciting events supported by my office that I encourage you to consider, including
our celebration of diversity during our 3rd Annual International Day of Friendship
(IDOF) on Sunday, August 7th. Also, get ready for local restaurants showcasing their
cuisines for Dine In Brooklyn, our borough’s premiere restaurant week celebrating
and promoting our local foodie culture, from Thursday, August 11th to Monday,
August 22nd.
The wonderful community we share today was created by you, the people of
Brooklyn. As your borough president, I want every family to share in the prosperity of
the Brooklyn brand. We are building our neighbors and our neighborhoods with the
resources to raise healthy children and families. I hope you will visit brooklynusa.org to learn more about how you could become involved in these efforts.
I also want you to know that Brooklyn Borough Hall, the People’s House, remains
open for you to host an event, address a community concern, or propose an idea that
will advance our borough.

BILLY OCEAN
Billy Ocean is one of the biggest recording stars Britain has ever produced, and has sold
over 30 million records in his lifetime. He has collected Gold and Platinum records across
the world, and hit the number one spot worldwide on pop charts including the USA,
Germany, Holland and the U.K. He has achieved extraordinary success as both an artist
and a songwriter. Born in Trinidad, Billy settled in London's East End when he was seven
years old. The calypso-crazy kid got turned on to soul singers like Otis Redding and Sam
Cooke, leading him to spend much of his study time in the music room.
Billy got his first break when he signed to GTO Records. His second single for them was
"Love Really Hurts Without You." Two Top 20 singles, "Love On Delivery" and " Stop Me,"
then "Red Light Spells Danger" became a smash in the UK and US. Billy's move to Jive
Records provided instant success, with the million-selling "Caribbean Queen," for which
he won a Grammy for best R&B Vocal, followed by "Loverboy,” "Suddenly," and the now
classic "Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car," which gave Billy another US No. 1 hit,
and a platinum album with Tear Down These Walls, in 1988.
YUNA
In a remarkably short period of time, Yuna has risen from
regional D.I.Y. notoriety to full-on international stardom. In the
process, the charismatic young singer-songwriter from
Malaysia—who makes her Verve Records debut with
Nocturnal—has become the first artist from her homeland to
conquer the American market. The ease with which Yuna has
transitioned to border-defying mainstream success shouldn't
be surprising, considering the effortlessly universal appeal of
her organic blend of contemporary pop, acoustic folk and soulful R&B. The artist's personally charged songs are deeply felt
yet melodically irresistible, combining her engaging voice and expressive songcraft with
imaginative production to create wholly distinctive music that's won her comparisons
with the likes of Feist, Adele and Norah Jones.

LATINO MUSIC BY THE SEA

Que Suenen Los Tambores - "let the drums be heard" - is Victor Manuelle's 22nd album,
released on Kiyavi/ Sony Music Latin. The title song is an anthem for the whole Spanishspeaking world to dance to. Though it's firmly in the tradition of Victor Manuelle's familiar style of salsa, his style is always innovative, and Que Suenen Los Tambores is no
exception. As always, the album puts Victor Manuelle in front of his world-class salsa
orchestra, but he is a salsa singer, and his great themes of amor y desamor -love and its
disappearance - showcase the full range of his vocal expression. Like his previous hit
albums, this one is simultaneously contemporary and classic, incorporating international musical touches while relying on his greatest strength: his power as a sonero (improvising singer) in the traditional Puerto Rican style.
Victor Manuelle combines complex, personal lyrics with sing-along choruses, and has
sold more than six million records worldwide, two million of them in the U.S. and Puerto
Rico. He has received a combined 16 Latin GRAMMY and GRAMMY Award nominations.
He made his New York debut at Madison Square Garden in 1996.

Over the past three decades, Rick Springfield has worn many hats as an entertainer and
performer. The creator of some of the finest power-pop of the ’80s, he’s a Grammy
Award-winning singer, songwriter, and musician who has sold 25 million albums and
scored 17 U.S. Top 40 hits, including “Jessie’s Girl,” “Don’t Talk to Strangers,” “An Affair
of the Heart,” “I've Done Everything for You,” “Love Somebody,” and “Human Touch.”
