“It’s All About Living”
Fall 2014
Richmond County Hospice, Inc. Hospice Haven, Anson Community Hospice
National Hospice Month
Every year, more than 1.6 million people living with a life-limiting
illness receive care from hospice and palliative care providers in the US,
reports the National Hospice and Palliative Organization (NHCPO).
During the celebration of National Hospice and Palliative Care next
month, providers across the country are raising awareness of the many
benefits of hospice and palliative care; hospice care is more than
traditional medical care. It’s care that provides expert pain management,
symptom control, emotional support, and spiritual care to patients and
family caregivers when a cure is no longer possible. Care is provided by
a highly talented and trained team of professionals and volunteers.
Hospice care in the US is most often provided in the home-allowing
people to be with their families and loved ones in comfortable
surroundings at the end of life. Research by the NHPCO has found that
94 percent of families who had a loved one cared for by hospice rated the
care as very good to excellent.
There is also new research confirming that patients may actually live
longer with hospice care. A recent study released by the New England
Journal of Medicine found that in a group of lung cancer patients, those
who received hospice care lived, on average, almost two months longer
than those who received standard care. Researchers also found that the
patients receiving hospice care reported a higher quality of life through
the final course of their illness. “With earlier referral to a hospice
program, patients may receive care that results in better management
of symptoms, leading to stabilization of their condition and prolonged
survival,” wrote the authors of the study.
“There’s an inaccurate perception among the American public that
hospice means you’ve given up” said J. Donald Schumacher, president
and CEO of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization
(NHPCO). “Those of us who have worked in the field have seen
firsthand how hospice care can improve the quality of and indeed
prolong the lives of people receiving care.” NHPCO encourages all
patients diagnosed with a serious illness, and their families to ask their
healthcare providers about hospice services.
Richmond County Hospice, Inc. is your home town hospice on US
Highway 1. North. We are a non-profit agency providing hospice services
in Richmond, Anson, Moore, Scotland and Montgomery counties. Please
join us in celebrating National Hospice and Palliative Care Month this
November. Whether you know someone currently receiving hospice or
someone who works or volunteers for hospice, take a moment this month
to acknowledge their courage and strength. Tell them you appreciate
what they are doing, put your arm around their shoulder and say thank
you for their ministry in our community. Affirming the life of another will
affirm your own; after all, hospice is really about living.
In Hospice Service,
Kristina Leyden LCSW

Inaugural “Battle For The Border”
On September 12th, the Anson Bearcats and Chesterfield Rams faced off on
the gridiron for the inaugural “Battle For The Border” trophy. The trophy was
presented by non-profit hospices serving the two counties, Anson Community
Hospice and Hospice of Chesterfield County.
Anson Community Hospice, a division of Richmond County Hospice, is a
non-profit “Hometown Hospice” and leader in end of life quality care in our
community since 1985.
Anson Community Hospice Marketing and Community Liaison,
David Jenkins added, “Anson Community Hospice is proud to partner with
Hospice of Chesterfield County and support this great football rivalry. Our
goal as a non-profit organization is to educate our community on the benefits
of hospice services and to provide quality compassionate care to families and
patients in their time of need.”

Fun Day and Cornhole Tournament. We want to thank all our sponsors, the staff, volunteers, board
of directors, Neil Parrisher, our Auctioneer Ronnie Hawks, the committee members, and our
co-Chairs, Faith Jones and Chris Thornton. We also extend a special thank you to Pee Dee Post for

CAMP HAVEN 2014
Richmond County Hospice, Inc. kicked off the annual
children’s grief camp on October 11, 2014. Camp Haven is
designed for children ages 5-12 who have experienced a
significant loss over the past year. Camp Haven provides a
day for children to share their grief with others and learn
of the many ways that grief can come to be through death,
divorce, or separation. Children oftentimes experience
feelings associated with grief that are not always
understood. These feelings can lead to stress, anxiety,
anger, fear, or sadness. Camp Haven provides a safe place
for kids to be kids and have fun with others who share similar circumstances. Grief is something unique to each
person, and Camp Haven provides an opportunity for children to express this in a fun and effective manner.
Camp Haven 2014 offered a variety of activities for participants. After breakfast, as an ice breaker, campers were able
to participate in a parachuting activity in order to become familiar with each other. Following this, campers
separated into six different stations designed to recognize grief and cope with this in a fun way. These included:
Memory Jars, Emotion Bracelets, Rainbow Rice, the Cycle of Emotions, Scrap Booking, and Reflection Quilting.
Campers were treated to breakfast, lunch, and snacks along with a free t-shirt and “goodie bag.” Parents were invited
to attend the closing ceremony at 2:00 pm with their camper for a balloon release where their loved one was
remembered.
Children may be referred by teachers, social workers, guidance counselors, or family members. Camp Haven is a day
for children to explore, learn, create, and grow through the grieving process. The camp is planned by a collaborate
group of Hospice professionals, volunteers, and school faculty who recognize the signs of grief in children and are
knowledgeable of effective coping skills. Camp Haven is a community program of Richmond County Hospice, Inc.
Light of Life ~ Fall 2014
The Bi-Annual Light of Life Memorial Celebration will be
held Tuesday, November 18, 2014, 6:00 pm at Ellerbe
United Methodist Church in Ellerbe, N.C. This Bi-Annual
event is held as a remembrance ceremony for families
served by Richmond County Hospice, Inc. who lost a loved
one over the past six months. This evening gives families a
time to celebrate the lives of those no longer with them.
During the service, family members take part in a reflection
ceremony by lighting a candle to commemorate the life of
someone they lost. In addition, families enjoy
entertainment from local musicians and a catered dinner.
Grief can oftentimes create a dark and sad place for
individuals to overcome. Light of Life provides an
opportunity for families to bring light into their lives and
take peace and comfort in the celebration of those who
have gone before them.

Forever Tree
Our loved ones touch our lives and they forever remain in our hearts. Richmond County Hospice, Inc. would
like to invite you to share in the beauty of this joyous holiday season while providing you with the
opportunity to share the memory of your loved one on our “Forever Tree.” This year, our Forever Tree will
be illuminated by bright white lights representing memorial and honorarium contributions for individuals as
given by their family and friends. Individuals can have their loved one remembered by making a $10
donation to Richmond County Hospice for each light they would like to have named for their loved one.
On Monday December 1, 2014 at 6:00pm, we will conduct a lighting ceremony at Richmond
County Hospice, Inc. located at 1119 N US Highway 1, Rockingham, NC. The names of those being
remembered or honored will be placed on a light, and all of the names will be read during the ceremony.
To be recognized during the ceremony, donations must be received by Wednesday November 26, 2014.
If you decide to place a light on the Forever Tree in memory or in honor of your loved one, please
complete the attached form and send it along with your contribution of $10 per light to Richmond County
Hospice Inc. 1119 N US Hwy 1, Rockingham, NC 28379. Acknowledgements will be mailed beginning
November 24th unless otherwise requested.
As with all contributions to Richmond County Hospice Inc., these donations are tax-deductible; and
the funds received from the “Forever Tree” help support our mission of providing high quality end-of-life
care so that patients and families can live each day with peace, comfort, and dignity.
We are looking forward to continuing this treasured event and honoring your loved one during this
holiday season.

Building the Way
Almost 30 years ago, visionary members of our
community came together with an ideal: to build a
Hospice to serve its citizens. Now as the only
Richmond County based non-profit Hospice, we serve not
only citizens of this county but also all the immediately
surrounding counties. We serve a population of 227,000
and provide services to any qualifying person regardless of
gender, age, religion, or ability to pay.
.
We are so pleased to offer you a unique opportunity
to be a part of your “home town hospice” history by
contributing to this project. A limited number of bricks can
be purchased to honor a loved one, living or deceased. The
brick will be engraved with your personalized message and
bricks will be placed in three sections for you and others to
enjoy: the walking path, fountain area and the Memorial
Wall at the Veteran’s Garden.
Your donation will help in two ways: honor our Veterans
and benefit our community’s needier patients. All the
funds collected from this project will go to our
Benevolent Care Program, providing care and
medications for those who, for whatever reason, do not
qualify to receive funds from Medicare, Medicaid, or
private insurances. It will allow them to have a more
dignified end-of-life experience, so they may live each day
with peace, comfort, and dignity.
Last year we started building our Walk to Remember
paths, which is a special place for memorializing or
honoring our loved ones. It also provides a quiet, serene
setting for meditation and prayer, and a peaceful solitude
for those who need to commune with nature and reach a
state of balance and tranquility. Our Walk to Remember
includes a pergola, an “old farm porch” and a fresh water
fountain. The culmination of this project will be our
Veterans garden, including a Memorial Wall, with
open access for all our communities to enjoy.
3 options to contribute to this program are available:
The Walking Path: donation per engraved brick
(4x8) is $100.00.
The Fountain Area: donation per engraved brick
(4x8) is $150.00. You receive a replica tile to keep.
The Veterans Wall: donation per engraved brick
(4x8) is $200.00 or (8x8) for $250.00. You also
receive a replica tile and a Certificate of
Recognition. Please fill out the Insert or go to
