The 16th Annual
Kleiman Creative Writing
Contest is coming up!
To shake up our 16th year of the Kleiman Creative Writing Contest and
get kids excited about writing early in the contest season, we will be
hosting a visit by a special author before the end of the year. Look for
information available soon about who it is and when the author will visit.
We are excited to provide this for schools!
Kleiman Creative Writing Contest packets will hit 4th, 5th and 6th grade
classrooms this month and the information will be online soon at
www.kendallvillelibrary.org. As a reminder, books will be due in March.
Anyone in 4th, 5th or 6th grade can participate, and some teachers even
include it in their class curriculum.

Books for Blood on October 17
What: Red Cross Blood Drive
Where: Kendallville Public Library
When: Friday, October 17 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Why: There is an urgent need!
The American Red Cross needs to increase its blood supplies, and you can help. In exchange, you will receive your choice of book
- for free!
A stable blood supply is vital to ensure that patient needs are met. Blood can take up to three days to be tested, processed and
made available for patients. Simply call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org to make an appointment.
All blood types are needed. A blood donor card, driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.
Individuals who are 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.
Students as young as 16 can donate blood in Indiana with parental consent, but have to meet height and weight requirements.
We’re Featuring “Unique” Books on Facebook
Our library does its best to keep the popular books coming. Nora Roberts, John Green, Mo Willems...we all have our
favorites. But we have been scouring the shelves of the Kendallville Public Library and others in the Evergreen Indiana
system to find books that are a little strange...a little gross...and very funny.
Farts: A Spotter's Guide is one such book. It's a little weird, but it's very helpful. Everyone tries to hide the fact that
they've farted, but the tactics people use are all a bit different. This book will help you pinpoint who dealt it every time.
What a great skill to have!
As we were saying, we've found lots of odd books in Evergreen Indiana. Thirty one of them, in fact. We'll be featuring
them every day during October on the library's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/kendallvillepubliclibrary. And good news - you don't
even need a Facebook account to view them. The best news of all, though, is that each of these books is available through Evergreen Indiana.
That's right...you can check out Farts: A Spotter's Guide (that one is on our shelves at KPL) or any of our other featured books.

It’s a Tiger!
By David LaRochelle
Illustrated by Jeremy Tankard
It’s a Tiger! is an action-packed,
exciting romp through the jungle.
The book opens with the narrator
offering to tell the readers a
story. He begins to weave a tale
about monkeys swinging in the
treetops when, out of the corner
of his eye, he spies a long striped tail that definitely does not belong
to a monkey. From there the narrator guides the readers through
the jungle, telling them to “push aside those vines” and “climb that
ladder.” But at every turn, the tiger is waiting, cleverly hidden.
This book is incredibly fun to read, and much like We’re Going on a
Lion Hunt, it takes the reader on a journey full of action and surprise.
The repeated refrain of “A TIGER!” will have kids laughing and
guessing when and where the tiger will turn up next. The colorful,
cheery illustrations make sure the pouncing, climbing, jumping tiger
is never too scary or fierce, so younger readers have nothing to fear.

There Was a Tree
By Rachel Isadora
Based on a classic song from 1912 of
the same name, There Was a Tree is a
wonderful book about a tree growing
in a hole in the ground and all the
things that can be found in, on, and
around that tree.
The book is essentially told in verses
of the song, with each verse building on the previous verse, making
it easy for kids to memorize and repeat the lines. The repeated
refrain of “the green grass grew all around” is also easy to remember
and it gives kids a chance to participate in the story. The story uses
rebuses (pictures that represent words), making it ideal for children
just learning to read on their own.
Isadora places the story in Africa and the mixed illustrations of wild
animals and the vast expanse of the savanna are beautiful and
vibrant. Sheet music and lyrics for the original song are included in
the book.

The Book Thief
By Markus Zusak
The Gravedigger’s Handbook. Sounds morbid,
right? After finding The Gravedigger’s
Handbook in the snow, Liesel’s next task is to
learn how to read. This moment began her
lifelong love of words and reading.
Liesel is a young girl ripped away from
everything she knows. Growing up in Germany
during World War II, she struggles to
understand the world around her. What she
doesn’t know is that she has captivated
Death’s interest.
The Book Thief is narrated from Death’s point of view. When Death speaks,
it’s time to listen.
