Currently comprised of Herod, Gehweiler (guitars, vox), Matt Sumrow (piano, organ, vox), Jason Caperton (bass) and Nic Gonzales (drums), the band has developed its most dynamic and compelling sound to date, and in the last few years have shared the stage with such acts as The Breeders, Sparklehorse, Mando Diao, Dashboard Confessional, and Vietnam. The Comas’ unique brand of psychedelic garage pop has been highly regarded by critics and fans most notably for their sci-fi love songs intermixed with floating synths and guitar fuzz as found on 2004’s extremely well received Conductor. The intense rhythm driven melodies and soaring distorted guitars that make up Spells are intertwined with Herod’s lyrics characterized by imagery of the forest. The band’s strange o j urney culminates in the appearance of Sgt. Disco, their first worldwide release on the Ipecac label. Circus Devils incorporates a musical alchemy of hard rock and soft rock, ugliness and beauty, tension and ambience, eerie moods, stories and humor and rock opera theatrics, resulting in a strangely coherent cinematic music experience. Circus Devils is the most eccentric tip of Pollard’s overflowing discography, likened to an indie rock version of Fantomas, Sgt. Disco features 32 tracks ranging from those under one minute to regular song lengths. Her piano playing, though based in favorites such as Wynton Kelly and Oscar Peterson, is original within the modern mainstream of jazz. She is an inventive composer and has an appealing laidback singing style. Gaea is frequently heard as the head of a trio. Her group with bassist Chris Colangelo and drummer Albert “Tootie” Heath is a unit with palpable chemistry, and is one of her very best lineups. Colangelo has the sound of a classic 1950’s bassist and also infuses the music with his own personality and inventive ideas. Tootie Heath, who has played with virtually every great jazz musician since the mid 1950’s, brings a great deal of knowledge to the music along with impressive versatility. The interaction and intimacy between the musicians is particularly enjoyable on originals such as Conclusion and Contemplation. Coolest Guy is a perfect frothy happy guitar pop song, and the closing track God Said is a prayer of surrender, complete with gospel piano, exposed vocals and a heavenly choir.
