You, however, are encouraged to visit. Our islands have many forts, built to protect our precious shores from the onslaught of pirates. They also served as courthouses, prisons, and as places for religious services. Visit Fort Christiansvaern or Fort Frederik on St. Croix, Fort Christian on St. Thomas, Fortsberg in St. John or Water Island’s Fort Segarra. They aren’t just buildings. They’re iconic landmarks in colonial history. Constructed in 1867 as the meeting place for the Danish Colonial Council, St. Thomas Government House serves today as the Governor’s Office. On St. Croix, Government House illustrates the grandeur of Danish buildings from the period in the West Indies when sugar was king. This building is one of the largest governor’s residences in the Lesser Antilles, and visitors are welcome. St. Croix Whim Plantation Museum — With its original early 18th Century plantation buildings covering 12 acres of land, it is the oldest sugar plantation museum in the Virgin Islands. The fully restored windmill and sugar factory ruins are open for you to explore. You can see sugar cane growing nearby in one of the plantation gardens. Buddhoe Park — On July 3, 1848, “General Buddhoe” Gottleib rallied more than 6,000 armed slaves at this park to demand freedom. As a result, Governor Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the slaves on this day. Located next to Fort Frederik Museum in Frederiksted, the park contains a bronze bust of the renowned slave rebellion leader. 6 Lord God of Saboath Lutheran Church — Built in the 1740s, this Lutheran Church is St. Croix’s oldest extant church. Originally the Dutch Reformed Church, it was transferred to the Lutheran Congregation in 1831, which is now the Steeple Building. The most distinctive feature is the neoclassical tower, built in 1834 and designed by Albert Lovmand, the official Architect of the Danish Colonies at the time. Holy Cross Catholic Church — Originally built in 1755, Holy Cross was extensively altered in the 1850s. It was built in the shape of a cross to represent St. Croix, which means “holy cross” in French. It is located on Queen Street in Christiansted. St. John Annaberg Sugar Mill Ruins — Is one of several of St. John’s plantations owned in the 1720s and 1730s by Frederick Moth, the first Danish Governor of St. Croix and, later, the Governor General of the Danish West Indies. By the early 19th century, Annaberg, one of St. John’s biggest sugar producers, also produced molasses and rum for export. The Emmaus Moravian Church — Located in Coral Bay, the church is on the List of Registered Historic Places in the United States Virgin Islands and holds an interesting place in St. John’s history. It was the only church allowed to minister to the slaves and was instrumental in establishing Dutch Creole as the language spoken between planters and the enslaved Africans. The Church stands next to the Caroline Estate plantation, the site of a 1733 slave revolt that resulted in the murder of the plantation owner and his 12-year-old daughter. This church is said to be haunted. St. Thomas Camille Pissarro Building — The father of French Impressionism, Camille Pissarro was born and raised in Charlotte Amalie. His childhood home is now an art gallery featuring artwork from dozens of artists, including Camille Pissarro himself. Beracha Veshalom Vegmiluth Hasidim Synagogue — Built in 1796 by Sephardic Jews, the St. Thomas Synagogue is one of the oldest synagogues in the Western Hemisphere. People of all faiths are welcome to visit the sand-floored interior of this National Historic Landmark. St. Thomas Reformed Church — The church was established around 1660, and is one of the oldest congregations in the Virgin Islands. Organized by Dutch traders as the St. Thomas Protestant Reformed Dutch Church, the first church was built in the mid-1670s on the savannah east of the Fort in the area known as Barracks Yard. In the 1740s a new church was built on Snegle Gade, which burned in 1804. A new church was immediately erected, but was again destroyed by fire in 1806. The cornerstone of the present church was laid September 18, 1844, and completed and consecrated on February 8, 1848. Frederick Lutheran Church — Built in 1820 in a combination of neo-classical and gothic revival architecture, this historic church retains much of its original character. Gracious steps and an arched doorway greet visitors. The church has an elaborate bell tower, lovely stained glass windows and other historical features that date back to the days when Denmark owned the Virgin Islands. Since the Lutheran Church was then the Danish state church, the governor often filled in for the minister. Home to the oldest Lutheran congregation in the Virgin Islands, this revivalist style structure was completed in 1844. New Herrnhut Moravian Church — Missionary Frederick Martin established this house of worship in St. Thomas in 1737 after purchasing a plantation on the east end of St. Thomas. The plantation was named “New Herrnhut” in honor of the Mother Church in Germany. It is the Virgin Islands’ first Moravian Church. 7 Whether learning to grow your own food at the Green Globe certified VI Sustainable Where protecting nature means preserving history 8 Farm, hiking on St. John’s 11,500-plus acres of protected national parks, or kayaking through St. Thomas’ Marine Sanctuary Mangrove Lagoon, the islands offer plenty of ways to find peace and tranquility, inside and out. V.I. Carnival (April - May) V.I. Carnival in St. Thomas is the first Carnival of the year, usually celebrated from mid-April to the beginning of May. It began in 1912 but didn’t become an annual event until 1952. Since that time, the V.I. Carnival has been a time to reconnect with family and friends and enjoy the captivating music, vivacious dance, savory cuisine and spirited pageantry that make V.I. Carnival the second most popular celebration in the Caribbean. St. John Festival (June - July) Set your inner dancer free Let the rhythm of carnival move you. In the USVI, it’s carnival all year long! Dance to your heart’s delight as quelbe and calypso float through the air. Try a Johnny Cake or a shellfish paté as you watch mocko jumbies parade through the streets and steel pan bands battle to see who will take the crown at Panorama. Each year brings with it new foods, exciting performances, vibrant parades and colorful costumes. Take in one or all three of our lively festivals, each offering its own unique experience. 10 Carnival in St. John combines the excitement of carnival with the spirit of emancipation. July 3, 1848, marks the date slaves were emancipated in the USVI. In honor of the USVI’s independence, the St. John Festival takes place in late June and traditionally culminates on July 4th. It’s an exciting time of year, as Cruz Bay becomes hopping with life, and the ferries between St. Thomas and St. John are filled with Carnival revellers. Don’t miss special events like the opening of the village, the food fair, the parade or the exciting 4th of July fireworks display. Crucian Christmas Festival (December - January) Experience the rich heritage and culture St. Croix has to offer during the Crucian Christmas Festival. Started in 1954, this festival is celebrated from December through New Year’s. Delicious culinary treats are yours to enjoy as carnival participants are adorned in an endless variety of madras colors and patterns. The festivities are spread throughout “Twin City,” so be sure to visit both Christiansted and Frederiksted. 11 U S V I F U N F A C T The 16th, 17th and 18th holes of Mahogany Run are so challenging that anyone who plays all three without a penalty stroke is awarded an “I Survived The Devil’s Triangle” certificate in the Pro Shop. When you’re done relaxing, there’s plenty more to do Whether you seek crystal clear waters or secluded mountaintops, the USVI offers all kinds of land and water activities. Swim alongside breathtaking corals. Weave through an untouched shipwreck. Choose from a variety of diving options, each as beautiful as the last. Some examples of the exciting dive options are listed below: CANE BAY Some of the best diving in the U.S. Virgin Islands is along the wall that runs parallel to the North Shore of St. Croix. The wall at Cane Bay is the most popular site because it is easy to get to from the beach and even easier by boat. Covered in plate corals, elephant ear sponges and black coral, the wall starts at 60 feet and goes down to over 2,000 feet! Where diversity means every type of dive imaginable Schools of horse-eyed jacks are common along the wall and so are a reef shark or two. In the shallows of Cane Bay you can find large gray angelfish, schools of black durgon, stingrays, and even the occasional seahorse. CARVAL ROCK Carval Rock is best known for its dramatic and beautiful rock formations loaded with a rainbow-like assortment of corals, sponges and gorgonians. At the base of the rocks, you’ll notice a passageway that will take you through to the other side of the rock, where you might catch a glimpse of a dozen or so shiny tarpon feeding on schools of silversides. Our warm, turquoise waters are filled with exotic creatures and colorful marine life in a diversity of dive locales. Fill your logbook with wall, wreck, night and reef dives done by boat or from the shore. And do it all under the safe, strict control of U.S. waters. WRECK OF THE WIT SHOAL II Located in 90 feet of water off the Southwest coast of St. Thomas, the 328 foot WIT Shoal II was once an armed military cargo ship (LST 467) designed to transport and land up to 20 tanks during World War II. There are five different levels to explore with a wide variety 14 of entries and exits, including the coral-encrusted smoke stacks. 15 There’s a reason people have been sailing these shores since 1493 Our year-round warm weather, steady breezes, well-marked and deep anchorages, and plentiful moorings make the USVI an ideal place for yachting. And with so many islands and cays in close proximity, island hopping is easy and fun. The USVI offers many full-service marinas, providing everything from water and power to designer shopping, fine dining, provisioning, fuel and repairs. During the 17th Century, the settlement and harbor were known as safe havens for pirates and other infamous men, the likes of Jean Hamlin, Bartholomew Sharp, “Tempest” Roberts and Captain Kidd. During the early 19th-Century Napoleonic Wars, the British occupied the island, and later, during the American Civil War, Confederate blockade runners briefly used Charlotte Amalie as a base.
