The company listed 215,000,000 common shares at an offer price of P7.50 per share. IMI intends to use the net proceeds from the offer for capital expenditure, business expansion, refinancing of debt and general corporate purposes. IMI Chairman Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala said, “IMI has come a long way since its listing by way of introduction in 2010. In the past four years, its operations and revenues have steadily increased, boosting its position as a global manufacturing pillar for the Ayala group.” Tan added that the company is now focused on high-growth, nontraditional products “with high-quality requirements and opportunities for customization such as those found in automotive, telecommunications infrastructure, industrial, and medical electronics markets.” IMI earlier reported that its nine-month revenues expanded 19 percent to $650.1 million, resulting in a surge in the nine-month net income to $21.0 million in 2014. BPI Capital Corporation served as the book runner, issue manager and lead underwriter for the public offer, with Investment & Capital Corporation of the Philippines and SB Capital Investment Corporation as participating underwriters. Ayala’s $300M Exchangeable Bond is Best Philippines Deal AC supports Ayala Land’s equity placement Ayala assisted its real estate unit in raising funds through a placement of 484,848,500 common shares at a price of P33.00 per share in January 2015. The placement was conducted via a bookbuilt offering structured as a top-up placement. All the proceeds were received by Ayala Land. Ayala’s $300 million bond was offered in May and was exchangeable into common shares of Ayala It was the first equity-linked international issuance by a Philippine issuer since 2012. It also achieved the lowest cost of financing across Asia ex-Japan in 2014. Goldman Sachs International acted as the sole international bookrunner of the offering and BPI Capital acted as sole domestic lead manager. On this page are other significant stock exchange listings by Ayala companies in 2014 and early 2015. $275M top-up placement and P13.5B AC Preferreds P10B Globe Perpetual Preferred Shares BPI’s P25B stock rights offering Ayala raised $275 million from the sale of common shares through top-up placement in November. Proceeds were earmarked for investments in power and infrastructure. The sale followed the successful re-issuance and offer of Preferred Class “B” Series 2 Shares that raised P13.5 billion for the parent company. Globe held a bell-ringing ceremony at the PSE on August 22 for successfully raising P10 billion from the issuance of its Series A Non-voting Perpetual Preferred Shares. Both the offering and oversubscription option were fully subscribed. The stock rights offer concluded in January 2014 was the largest capital markets transaction in the bank’s history. BPI President and CEO Cezar Consing expressed gratitude to shareholders for the “overwhelming vote of confidence in the bank’s ability to execute on its growth strategy.” FinanceAsia, the region’s leading financial publishing company has cited Ayala’s $300 million bond exchangeable into Ayala Land shares as the Best Philippines Deal of 2014. 2 Land. Bearing interest at the rate of 0.50 percent per year, payable semiannually, the bond will mature in 2019, with a three-year investor put option and a three-year issue call option subject to a 130-percent hurdle. Net proceeds of the issue were used for general corporate purposes. Vol 18 • No 2 • 2014 The equity placement was expected to raise P16 billion in proceeds to be used for Ayala Land’s expansion projects. Ayala Land has set aside P100 billion in planned capital expenditure this year. LRMC wins LRT Line 1 concession and extension INFRASTRUCTURE MCX to open in 1Q 2015 The Muntinlupa-Cavite Expressway, formerly known as the Daang HariSLEX Connector Road, is scheduled to complete construction and open within the first quarter of 2015. Ayala invested around P2.2 billion in the project and will operate and maintain the road for 30 years. Light Rail Manila Corporation has won the operations and maintenance project for the existing Light Rail Transit Line 1 and will soon extend the commuter rail from its present endpoint in Baclaran, Manila, to Bacoor, Cavite. LRMC was formally awarded the P65-billion project by the Department of Transportation and Communications and the Light Rail Transit Authority with the signing of the 32-year concession agreement on October 2, 2014. The consortium of Metro Pacific Light Rail Corporation, AC Infrastructure Holdings Corporation, and the Philippine Investment Alliance for Infrastructure’s Macquarie Infrastructure Holdings (Philippines) submitted the lone bid with a premium of P9.35 billion. LRMC will invest P35 billion in the project. The extended rail line, with a total of eight new stations, is envisioned to help ease the worsening traffic conditions in the Parañaque-Las Piñas-Cavite corridor. It is also expected to enhance commercial development around the rail stations. LRMC has forged partnerships with three leading French companies to deliver a world-class rail transit system. The concession agreement was signed by MPIC President and CEO Jose Ma. K. Lim, AC Infra President and CEO John Eric Francia, DOTC Sec. Joseph Emilio Abaya, witnessed by MPIC Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan, Ayala President and COO Fernando Zobel de Ayala, MIRA Managing Director Michael Rodriguez, Public-Private Partnership Center Executive Director Cosette Canilao, DOTC Asst Secretary Jaime Fortunato Caringal, DOTC USec Edwin Lopez, and LRTA Administrator Honorito Chaneco. This is the third PPP project won by Ayala. LRMC, DOTC, and LRTA are expected to complete certain requirements and obligations before LRMC officially takes over the existing operations. Water concessions get welcome news Water rates in the East Zone were adjusted starting January 5, 2015, as the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System approved a 1.32 percent increase in the basic charge or equivalent to P0.36 per cubic meter due to the Foreign Currency Differential Adjustment. With the new FCDA, residential customers consuming 20 cubic meters per month will pay P10 more from P297.08 to P306.99 while those consuming 30 cubic meters per month will be billed an additional P20 per month from –P–604.99 to P625.23. Low-income residential customers are exempt from the adjustment and will continue to pay the “lifeline rate” of P83.14 per month. Clark Water to infuse P3.93B until 2040 Clark Development Corporation has extended Clark Water’s concession by 15 years. The sole water and used water services provider of the Clark Freeport and Special Economic Zones pledged to invest P3.93 billion until 2040, a quarter of which will be expended within the first four years. Improvements in water facilities is seen to promote the Freeport Zone as an ideal business hub for multinational companies. Laguna Water cited as environmental partner For its role in community awareness and engagement in maintaining a sustainable environment, Laguna Water was recognized as Sta. Rosa’s environmental partner during the 10th anniversary celebration of its cityhood. Laguna Water is also expected to be involved in the city’s Adopt-a-River Program. P800-million loan for Cebu Bulk Water Supply Project inked The Cebu Bulk Water Supply project, created by a joint investment agreement between the Provincial Government of Cebu and the Manila Water Consortium, received support from the Philippine Water Revolving Fund by way of an P800 million loan funded by the Development Bank of the Philippines and the Japan International Cooperation Agency. The project is the first large-scale surface water project in the province. MCX is expected to relieve traffic congestion along Daang Hari Road and Commerce Avenue and give commuters from Molino and Bacoor faster and easier access to the South Luzon Expressway. A VITAL COMPONENT “The LRT Line 1 is a vital component of our city’s transport network that will help ease the pressures brought about by the increasing development around the city. As we assume the responsibility for the operations of the train line, we hope to be able to deliver in due time a much improved riding experience that is safe and efficient for our daily rail commuters.” FZA LRT 1 CONCESSION AGREEMENT SIGNING October 2, 2014 Globe expands LTE in VisMin In September in Lahug, Cebu, Globe activated the first site of its mobile ultra-broadband infrastructure in Visayas and Mindanao. The activation followed the signing of the partnership between Globe and Alcatel Lucent in Paris, France. Vol 18 • No 2 • 2014 3 POWER GNPK secures financing for construction GN Power Kauswagan, a limited partnership owned by AC Energy, the PINAI fund, and Power Partners Ltd Co, signed in December definitive documentation for the financing to commence phased construction of a 4 x 135MW coal-fired power plant in Lanao del Norte. The plant will alleviate the tight power supply in Mindanao when it begins operation in 2017. AC Energy is also involved in the development of a 2 x 600MW power plant in Bataan beside the existing GN Power Mariveles plant, which is 17 percent owned by AC Energy. The new power plant has yet to achieve financial close, which is targeted in 2015. Ayala energy unit on track to meet 1,000-MW target AC Energy Holdings Inc now has attributable capacity of over 700 megawatts from both renewable and conventional power sources, the company announced in January 2015. This brings it closer to its 2016 goal of reaching 1,000 MW attributable capacity of power plants that are operational or under construction. (See related stories on this page) AC Energy’s wind farm projects reached completion in 2014. Its investee company, Northwind Power Development Corporation, completed its 19-MW wind expansion project in Bangui, Ilocos Norte on October 10, bringing its total capacity to 52MW. The Department of Energy has since issued a Certificate of Endorsement for Feed-in-Tariff for the expansion. On November 11, its affiliate North Luzon Renewable Energy Corp completed an 81-MW wind farm in Pagudpud. This wind project, which consists of 27 turbines supplied by German manufacturer Siemens, has likewise since been operational. Combined, Northwind and NLREC put AC Energy’s total wind power capacity at 133 MW. SLTEC to begin commercial operations The first unit of a 2 x 135 MW coal-fired power plant in Calaca, Batangas under South Luzon Thermal Energy Corporation is scheduled to start commercial operations in the first quarter of 2015. The second 135 MW unit of the plant is currently under construction and expected to be complete by the end of the year. SLTEC is a joint venture with Trans-Asia Oil and Development Corp. The city of Milan is home to a third of the 200,000-strong overseas Filipino community in Italy. The Chennai office’s 350 employees deliver customized solutions to global clients and services such as accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and HR. 6 Vol 18 • No 2 • 2014 Alviera to create new growth hub in Central Luzon Alviera, a new 1,125-hectare masterplanned community launched in September, is envisioned to catapult Porac, Pampanga as the new growth center and a major hub for commercial and business activity in Central Luzon. Jointly developed by Ayala Land and Leonio Land, Alviera is their first large-scale estate development in the region. The first phase will include a PEZA-registered industrial park, two universities, residential communities, and a country club. It will entail an investment of P8 billion over three years and will generate about 5,000 new jobs as it begins development. Over the next 20 years, Alviera will enhance quality of living in the region by creating a community with about 20,000 office and industrial workers, 65,000 residents, and 20,000 students. Local businesses with products for export have already expressed interest in locating to the 30-hectare Alviera Industrial Park. Moreover, all three residential brands—Ayala Land Premier, Alveo Land, and Avida Land—will develop communities for their specific markets. Holy Angel University, Pampanga’s largest university, and Miriam College will be the first educational institutions in Alviera. There will also be a mall, office buildings, hotel, hospital, transport terminal, and parks later in the development. Explains Meean Dy, head of Strategic Landbank Management: “We are known for creating communities that become thriving economic centers in their respective regions. These growth centers serve as platforms for our various product offerings, integrating into thriving communities that generate value over time.” Ayala Auto opens three new showrooms in the Visayas Ayala Automotive Holdings Corporation celebrated triple milestones in growing its network of dealerships in the Visayas region. In early 2014, Honda Cars Cebu welcomed customers to its new home in the North Reclamation Area of Cebu City. The new dealership has improved and larger facilities, including state-of-the-art service areas. Isuzu Cebu Inc opened its newly reconstructed showroom in Tagbilaran City, Bohol on September 25, with the all-new Isuzu MU-X leading its fleet. The opening of the showroom, which coincided with the branch’s sixth anniversary, was the latest business development of the Ayala group to help spur economic activity in Bohol a year after the earthquake. Then on September 26, Iconic Dealership Inc inaugurated its flagship Volkswagen showroom in the Visayas. Volkswagen Cebu is also located in Cebu City’s North Reclamation Area, a rising commercial and business district. The event also introduced the much-anticipated VW Golf GTI. “Cebu has always been cosmopolitan and at the forefront of innovation. Hence, it only makes sense that we open our second dealership in the automotive row of Cebu City. Not only will it cater to discerning Cebuanos, it will also serve as the hub for the entire Visayas region,” said Ayala Auto Chairman and President JP Orbeta. Ayala and Mitsubishi Corporation celebrate 40 years of partnership In 1974, Ayala Corporation and Mitsubishi Corporation—two respected conglomerates with a long history of contributing to the development of their country’s economies—agreed to jointly explore investment opportunities in the Philippines. The business relationship they started would be strengthened over time, leading to successful investments in automotive dealerships, industrial estate development, electronics manufacturing, and water infrastructure, among others. As the business relationship and the cultural affinity grew stronger, this partnership has become an enduring corporate kinship. In 2014, as Ayala commemorated its 180th year, the two conglomerates marked the 40th year of their cooperation, celebrating the occasion in November in Tokyo, Japan. GLOBAL ROUNDUP Integreon expands its business in India Integreon moved to a new delivery center in Noida, India, to better provide clients with its awardwinning service offerings in integrated legal, document, research, and business support solutions. The new center doubles Integreon’s capacity in the Noida (NCR) region, allowing Integreon to build on its successes in the legal services market. The India Law Business Journal named Integreon as “LPO of the Year” in 2013, after years of top ranking. With delivery centers in Mumbai and Noida, Integreon is well positioned to continue to lead markets in the delivery of its services from India. IMI China donates equipment to vocational schools Two vocational schools in Chengdu and Chongqing received in October a complete line of secondhand surface mount technology (SMT) equipment from IMI China. The equipment donation as well as on-the-job training are part of the company’s strategic partnership with vocational schools to raise the skills of technicians for IMI’s factories. Ayala Land widens US reach from ‘coast to coast’ Ayala Land expanded its reach for sales and customer service as its first US-based permanent office marked its second year in 2014. Ayala Land’s first sales and customer service office in the US is located at the Seasons MarketPlace, a Filipino lifestyle center in Milpitas, situated within the Silicon Valley region in California. Milpitas has the largest concentration of Filipinos in Northern California. To better serve Filipinos living and working in urban centers around Milpitas, Ayala Land set up a downtown office at the Philippine Consulate Building and another satellite office in California. The company is also looking at opening a full office in New York. Vol 18 • No 2 • 2014 7 JAZA receives RVR Award for Nation Building BENCHMARK Ayala companies win PSE Bell Awards Three of the five awardees of the 2014 PSE Bell Awards held November 10 were companies in the Ayala group. Manila Water, Ayala Land, and Cebu Holdings were named among listed companies that practice exemplary good governance. Manila Water has won three times since PSE launched the recognition program in 2012. JAZA received the 2014 Ramon V. del Rosario Sr Award for Nation Building from the Junior Chamber International Manila and the Asian Institute of Management RVR Center for Social Responsibility. The award, named for JCI Manila’s founding president and founding trustee of AIM, is given to individuals who exemplify outstanding corporate citizenship and commitment to nation building. JAZA was honored at a program held August 18 at the Philamlife Tower Club. The event was attended by members of the academe and private sector, including the management and boards of the Ayala group. Ayala Land is best for sustainability Ayala Land distinguished itself by being a winner at the first Sustainable Business Awards - Philippines, organized by Singapore-based Global Initiatives. Urban and Regional Planning Head Art Corpuz and Sustainability Manager Anna Maria Gonzales received the award in July. In September, Ayala Land was included anew in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, the only Philippine company and one of five real estate companies from emerging markets to be included in the list. BPI is the best retail bank in the Philippines The Asian Banker named BPI as the Best Retail Bank in the Philippines at the 13th Excellence in Retail Financial Services Awards in 2014. The award program is considered as one of the most rigorous, prestigious, and transparent for its comprehensive assessment of the retail financial services industry in Asia Pacific, Central Asia, Middle East, and Africa. Meanwhile, BPI’s My ePrepaid Mastercard, a reloadable prepaid card that has been lauded for opening the e-commerce industry to a more diverse set of digital customers, was also named Best Payments Product. 8 Vol 18 • No 2 • 2014 Phinma President Ramon del Rosario Jr was not part of the panel of judges for the award, but he is a member of Ayala’s board of directors. “This has given me good opportunity to watch them closely,” he said. “They run their businesses with the highest levels of ethics and good governance. They always rank among the top as a company and as a group.” For 180 years, Ayala’s investments have spurred the growth of Philippine industries as well as local and national economy. Commitment to nation building remains a core value of the company. Said JAZA: “We, as businesses, need to collaborate and work across sectors to define where we can carve out unique strengths and capabilities that will allow us to thrive in an increasingly interconnected and interdependent world. All of this becomes next to impossible without an educated, progressive society that can work efficiently, live comfortably in safety and peace, and create wealth across all spectrums of our country to keep the cycle of progress alive.” Manila Water joins elite list of Global Growth Companies Ayala Land is Frost and Sullivan’s Builder of the Year Manila Water achieved another significant milestone in 2014 as it gained recognition for being one of 20 Global Growth Companies in East Asia, as selected by the World Economic Forum. Recognizing Ayala Land’s positive social and economic impact on local communities and the nation by successfully incorporating “green technology” in all its projects, global growth consulting firm Frost and Sullivan named it Builder of the Year in the Philippines Excellence Awards held July 17. The award was doubly significant for Metro Manila’s East Zone concessionaire as it was the only Philippine company included in the prestigious list. WEF describes GGCs as “fast-growing companies with the clear potential to become global economic leaders.” “When choosing entrants, we assess companies on their business model, annual revenues and growth rates, executive leadership, and market position,” shared David Aikman, WEF managing director. “Manila Water is a dynamic company with clear potential to shape the future in its relevant business sectors and so is a perfect fit to our GGC community.” The Philippines Builder of the Year Award is presented to the company that exhibits excellence in growth strategy and implementation, degree of innovation with new products and technologies, leadership in customer value, and market penetration. Similarly, in February, the company was conferred the 2014 Green Luminary Award by Channel News Asia for promoting and integrating environmental sustainability in its projects. The award is given to the Asian company that leads in employing green practices in its business. Ayala wins IMD-Lombard Odier Global Family Business Award BENCHMARK Ayala Land is Real Estate Developer of the Year Ayala Land won the highest award as the region’s Real Estate Developer of the Year at the 2014 South East Asia Property Awards. The award program selects the best companies in Southeast Asia’s real estate industry, highlighting top-tier developers, projects, and services all over the region. Ayala Land bested leading companies from Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Singapore. Ayala was awarded the 19th Annual IMD-Lombard Odier Global Family Business Award at the 25th Summit of the Family Business Network International held October 16 in Dubai. Given by IMD, a top-ranked global business school based in Switzerland, and Lombard Odier, one of the most respected private banks in Europe, this prize is regarded as the most prestigious recognition for successful family businesses. It recognizes the way in which multi-generational families separately manage the interests of their families and businesses, combining tradition and innovation while demonstrating a clear commitment to the social and civic responsibilities of their community. Ayala Land President Bobby O. Dy received the award on October 16 in Singapore. “The Ayala story is close to two centuries old, and is both fascinating and impressive,” said IMD President Dominique Turpin. “Over seven generations, this company has provided numerous lessons for other family businesses to learn from, in particular the importance of long-term vision, a broader social awareness and an ability to adapt. Manila Water bested 31 companies from eight countries to place first in Innovation in Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater Network Modelling and Analysis at the 2014 Be Inspired Awards. Given by Public Affairs Asia, the award recognized Text2Teach’s success in implementing an innovative education project that harnesses the strengths of business, government, and nonprofit sectors. Started in 2003, Text2Teach counts Globe and Ayala Foundation among its lead proponents. In 2015, it is poised for mainstreaming into the public elementary school system, with a target reach of over 38,000 schools and 3 to 4 million students every year. Text2Teach was also a finalist for the Gold Standard Award for Stakeholder Engagement, for its partnership with the City Government of Silay, Negros Occidental. Since 2004, Be Inspired has recognized the world’s outstanding infrastructure projects. The award aims to advance innovation and best practices in design, engineering, construction, operations and project delivery. It is sponsored by Bentley Systems, the leading company providing software solutions for sustaining infrastructure. Manila Water won for its Marikina North Project wastewater network sewer modelling entry, cited as “inspirational for its leading edge recognition of water related issues in their city.” As part of the recognition, a $1,000 charitable donation was made in Manila Water’s name. Ayala tops ranking of best managed, governed companies On its 180th year, Ayala continues to reap awards for management excellence. FinanceAsia named Ayala the country’s best managed company in its 14th annual poll published in March 2014. Ayala also clinched the top spot for corporate governance and corporate social responsibility and ranked a close second for investor relations. JAZA and Tony Aquino were recognized among the best Philippine CEOs and Ayala Land’s Jaime Ysmael was also named among best CFOs. IMI is among top global EMS providers IMI ranked 21st in the 2014 list of Top 50 electronics manufacturing services providers in the world, according to Manufacturing Market Insider. The last time the entire Ayala group gathered to celebrate Christmas was in 1976. The 2014 summit featured a panel discussion with Ayala group CEOs and talks by Incite South Africa Director Nicola Robins, Nielsen Philippines Executive Director Carole Ann Sarthou, and Unilever Philippines Chairman and CEO Rohit Jawa. The event launched Ayala’s 5th sustainability report, which introduces the 360º Sustainability Framework to shape the group’s business and sustainability agenda. The 2013 report is the first conglomerate report in the Philippines to use the Global Reporting Initiative G4 framework. Of the 175 teams that applied, Team “Barkadayala,” composed of five students from the University of the Philippines-Diliman, emerged as the winner. Their concept was a customer-service tool that will make the mall experience livelier, more efficient, and more meaningful for the youth. Created by Ayala Malls and co-founded by Paloma U. Zobel, Idea’Yala invited young individuals in the Philippines to develop design concepts that will define the “mall of the future”—one that is sustainable, market inclusive, and with the potential to address social and environmental concerns. The competition, launched September 9 at the Glorietta Activity Center, challenged the youth to imagine innovative mall experiences that go beyond established business or market assumptions, and turn them into viable entrepreneurial and design solutions. These could be in the form of mall enhancements such as new concepts for retail, dining, and entertainment, or ideas for sustainable mall development that Ayala Malls can then implement. Mentoring was an important aspect of the competition. Bong Consing unveils the new marketing campaign for customer empowerment Vol 18 • No 2 • 2014 13 Project Wonderful: Bayanihan in the time of social media Harnessing the power of digital media and Filipinos’ inherent desire to help their fellowmen, Globe has raised over P50 million in cash and in kind to help build homes and school buildings and provide livelihood opportunities to families affected by Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda. Under Project Wonderful, Globe’s corporate response to the devastation caused by the supertyphoon, digital lifestyle products and services were used by customers to donate time, finances, and talent towards rebuilding the nation. Globe developed compelling, documentary-style YouTube videos that recounted the stories of Globe ambassadors Bamboo, Georgina Wilson, Liz Uy, and Chieffy Caligdong as they helped deliver 2,000 Christmas toys to kids in Ormoc, build 100 homes for Ormoc families, and distribute almost 1,000 learning kits to Iloilo schoolchildren. Likewise, using the hashtag #ProjectWonderful on social media and blogs, Globe spurred Filipinos from various walks of life to voice hopes and wishes for the country and encourage them to donate or even volunteer. Its two new buildings are equipped with emergency alarm systems, kitchens, and showers. It can withstand over 300 kph of wind. Building resilient schools, such as this one in Negros Occidental, is a component of Ayala Foundation’s integrated approach to post-disaster recovery and rehabilitation. It also brings Text2Teach and Training Institute programs to improve learning and upgrade teacher skills. Another component is sustainable livelihood. Fishing boats and seeds for farming have been distributed in Sagay and Cadiz, respectively. Vol 18 • No 2 • 2014 15 Ayala Museum invites everyone to “Inspire Every Day” Art and history have the power to inspire and motivate people to do and see things differently. Ayala Museum and Filipinas Heritage Library’s “Inspire Every Day” campaign has been presenting special events and using their special collections to tell stories of creativity, strength, courage, pride, curiosity and other universal values. The campaign was launched on July 19, with Ayala Museum opening its doors to the public for free. By midday, a queue had formed outside the museum as the building reached its maximum capacity. Aside from enjoying the galleries and the new library, visitors made creative use of products from partner merchants such as Fully Booked, Power Mac Center, and Uniqlo at their respective “inspire stations.” Several musical acts also performed during the day including the Manila Symphony Orchestra, artists of Terno Recordings, and Up Dharma Down. Guests were given free soda provided by Coca Cola Philippines as souvenir. Ayala Museum also saw a significant spike in social media activity as users engaged with “Inspire Every Day”-related posts or created their own. Other activities soon followed suit including “Midnight Museum,” an evening Halloween event in partnership with the Japan Foundation, theatre company Sipat Lawin, and Museum Café. Similar events will be done in 2015 to inspire more people and open their minds about museums, libraries, and cultural institutions as places where one can gain life lessons through art and history. FHL and Google present online history of Baguio In September, Filipinas Heritage Library joined Ayala Museum in becoming the first cultural institutions from the Philippines to partner with Google Cultural Institute. Through its online exhibit on the GCI site, “We look before and after, and pine for what is not: A history of Pines Hotel and Baguio,” FHL made some of its collections free and accessible to the public. The Google Site hosts exhibits and features collections from museums and archives from around the world. Other partner libraries include the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, the Vaclav Havel Library in Czech Republic, the Kyoto Prefectural Library and Archives, the Library of Birmingham in the UK, the National Library of Ireland, the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library in India, and the Royal Library of Denmark. Exhibits cover biographical profiles, geographic histories, and narratives of historical events. Each high-resolution item in the exhibits can be viewed in detail. “We look before and after” talks about the Pines Hotel, an iconic landmark whose history is closely intertwined with that of Baguio City. The site of the Pines Hotel was originally that of the Baguio Sanitarium, arguably the most popular colonial hill station built by the Americans in Asia. Cesar Legaspi: The Brave Modern In the halcyon and heady days in pre-war Philippines, a group of young artists were paving the way to a brave new world of modern art. Learning from the acknowledged Father of Modern Art, Victorio Edades, the young artists, who called themselves the Thirteen Moderns, were eager to find new ways of visual expression. Among them was Cesar Legaspi. The work of Cesar Legaspi shows the progression and development of Philippine painting in the twentieth century—from the rigorous intellectualism of Cubism in his early paintings to the harmonious unity of stylized figuration and tropical chromaticism at the peak of Neo-Realism. His fragmented pictorial style, intense color, and stark social commentary contributed significantly to the acceptance of Philippine modern art, earning his place in the pantheon of Filipino National Artists. “Cesar Legaspi: The Brave Modern” runs from December 2, 2014 to April 26, 2015 at the Third Floor Galleries of Ayala Museum. The exhibition includes the artist’s works from the pre-war period to the 1980s, including select paintings from various collections. BPI was one of only five companies given the Diamond Award by the Philippine Marketing Association. The award is a lifetime recognition and given on the occasion of the industry organization’s 60th anniversary. BPI was honored for marketing brilliance in establishing and growing its business and its contribution to the cause of Philippine marketing. INKED Ayala Land, through its subsidiary AyalaLand Hotels and Resorts Corp, entered a long-term management deal with Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group in July, in connection with plans to develop a new Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Makati City. Mexico: Fantastic Identity Ayala Museum, in partnership with the FEMSA Collection and Coca-Cola FEMSA Philippines, presented the exhibition “Mexico: Fantastic Identity, 20th Century Masterpieces, FEMSA Collection” from September 30 to November 9. The show featured Mexican artworks starting from the European experience of the early 20th century through the vanguard movements and schools. HR Summit: Preparing the organization for ASEAN integration The 9th Ayala group HR Summit held November invited experts in the fields of economics and HR research and practice to give insights and ideas to prepare the organization for the ASEAN Economic Community. “We need to strengthen our employee value proposition,” said JP Orbeta, group head for Strategic Human Resources. He and summit speakers mentioned several ways to address these concerns. These include knowing existing talent, making sure that rewards are competitive within the region, offering a rewarding worklife and fulfilling career, developing managers to handle workforce diversity, and equipping talent with the right skills to succeed in the changing business environment. Boracay Water connects Ati community Solar Light changes lives Filipiniana Online turns 1 Members of the indigenous community of Atis in Boracay Island now get water direct from the tap through the Lingap Para Sa Katutubo program. The Solar Light Initiative, a project of BPI Foundation and the Engineering College Government of De La Salle University, installed 100 rechargeable solar lights and a solar charging station designed by DLSU students in Bgy Sto. Nino in Tanay, Rizal. Over a thousand e-books may be viewed at Filipinas Heritage Library’s digital portal for rare and special books and Rizaliana. Collection highlights include Blair and Robertson’s The Philippine Islands and writings of Jose Rizal and President Elpidio Quirino. Funded by Boracay Water and Manila Water Foundation, the program benefits 30 households or 188 individuals, who were used to long queues at a standpipe and paying exorbitant fees for water use. With new water connections, they can now get continuous, potable water service in their own homes. Focus on Inclusion The project is aligned with BPI Foundation’s commitment to education and sustainable development. The community will be monitored by nonprofit One Million Lights Philippines to ensure that the project is sustainable. Filipiniana Online is FHL’s way of preserving its collection while making it available to a broader public here and abroad.
