Long census form debate lingers on

Party leader Jack Layton sent
a letter to the Speaker of the
Commons today asking for a debate
on the “integrity of the census” when
the House resumes next month.
He made the call as the
Commons industry committee met to
discuss the census issue.
The Conservatives have been
facing heavy criticism since they
announced in July that they are
making
the
long-form
census
voluntary.
They argue that the survey,
which has been mandatory, is too
intrusive.
But experts say a narrower
cross-section of society will participate
in any voluntary survey, making the
data
less
representative
and
incomparable to previous census
surveys.

Editorial
Bringing the community
closer together
In reading about community
unity the folowing excerpt is quoted to
underscore the values which can be
derived from this idea:
Individuals
and
families
function within the context of a
community, which in turn functions
within a larger society, nation, and
world. The individual's and family's wellbeing is bound up with the community's
well-being, and likewise its well-being
is inseparable from the peace and
prosperity of the society, the nation,
and ultimately, the world. Religious
precepts undergird community by
teaching the virtues of cooperation,
friendship, justice, and publicmindedness. These create the spirit of
unity by which community can thrive
and prosper.
As can be gleaned from the
above quote, unity promotes a healthy
relationship starting from within a
family, among friends and neighbors,
different communities, countries, and
the whole world. It is also conducive
to the development of many virtues
which include generosity, industry,
teamwork, cooperation and fellowship.
These are essential aspects of living a
full and better life.
In spite of obvious benefits,
community unity is often elusive or
difficult to achieve. For example, in the
Philippine community in Montreal,
many leaders often speak about their
wish for unity but they appear to be just
rendering lip service to its promotion.
Furthermore, many associations are
regularly formed out of the same
regionalistic tendencies of people to
band together because of their
common dialects, common origins
and interests. Perhaps, there is really
nothing wrong with this social
phenomenom except when it causes
some
unintended
results
of
competition among themselves in
trying to sell tickets to their
anniversaries and other celebrations to
raise funds. After all, they have to offer
these tickets to the same people in the
community. On the other hand, there
may be a way to make these
associations become united in
pursuing a common goal of
community unity by forming a town hall
meeting of sorts. If their leaders are
willing to participate in a friendly
debate of issues, they could discover
that there are really more similarities
than differerences among themselves.
In fact, we believe that the recent
controversies published in this paper
over the past three months may have
contributed to the public’s awareness
that things must change if we want to
have unity in this community. We have
to develop a sense of balance and to
believe that for every question, there
are always two sides. To be fair, we
believe that everyone has the right to
express his or her opinion. As a
newspaper, our responsibility is to
provide our readers information in a
timely manner and to allow them to
make their own opinions from what
they read or hear. It is important for us
to help promote good citizenship and
positive values. But our utmost desie is
to promote community unity. This is
the reason why we often write about
the cooperative movement as we
believe that supporting a social
economy enterprise is one of the ways
to empower our citizens economically
as well as socially and politically.
We hope that the recent,
unusual articles that appeared in the
North American Filipino Star will help
bring the community closer together.
Judging from the feedback we
received, many people believe that
political intrigues and discords should
no longer be allowed to go on. We
can accomplish more by building up
something we can all be proud of
rather than engage in constant
creation of conflicts that are
perpetuated
by
the
minority.
Moreover, it is fundamentally important
to recognize that we may have said
enough about the subject of these
controversies and we should not
prolong the debate needlessly. On the
other hand, if there is a reason to clarify
issues that affect everyone, it is our
obligation to inform our readers in
order to allow them the opportunity to
exercise their freedom of expression
and the right to agree or disagree with
the opinions expressed by our
contributing editors.
It is our firm belief that for every
right there is a corresponding
responsbility. This is the basic premise
under which a democracy must
function in order to keep our
democratic institutions intact.
By
being objective and open minded, we
believe that we can help bring our
community closer together. a

Make Parliament work in order not to hold
unncessary elections, Prime Minister says
OTTAWA – Prime Minister Stephen
Harper says making Parliament work is
essential if Canada is to avoid an
unnecessary election that would
jeopardize our economic recovery.
“The economy remains the number
one priority of Canadians and of our
Government,” said the Prime Minister.
“An unnecessary election is the last
thing that Canadians need, that the
economy needs, at this time.”
To advance the objective of making
Parliament work, the Prime Minister
today announced the appointment of
one of his most experienced, senior
Ministers to the position of Leader of
the Government in the House of
Commons. The Honourable John
Baird has a mandate to work
cooperatively with the other parties
and make Parliament function.
“Canadians need Parliament to work
so that Canada's Economic Action
Plan is not interrupted," said the Prime
Minister. “We want to do our part and
to work cooperatively with all
opposition parties to put the economy
first.”
This crucial role is the latest of many in
which Minister Baird has served with
distinction. He secured passage of the
landmark Federal Accountability Act,
served as Minister of the Environment,
and most recently, oversaw the
implementation
of
infrastructure
stimulus, a vital part of Canada’s
Economic Action Plan.
Others changes made as part of
today's fine-tuning of the Cabinet are
as follows:
•
The Honourable Chuck Strahl
succeeds Mr. Baird as Minister of
Transport,
Infrastructure
and
Communities.
• The Honourable John Duncan, of
British Columbia, enters the Cabinet by
succeeding Mr. Strahl as Minister of
Indian
Affairs
and
Northern
Development, Federal Interlocutor for
Métis and Non-Status Indians and
Minister of the Canadian Northern
Economic Development Agency.
“Minister Strahl will take on his new
responsibilities
with
the
same
dedication and hard work that he's
shown in his previous portfolios,” said
the Prime Minister. His immediate
priority is the ongoing implementation
of
the
infrastructure
stimulus
component of Canada’s Economic
Action Plan.
In announcing the appointment of the
newest member of his Cabinet, the
Prime Minister noted that “John
Duncan’s solid work as Parliamentary
Secretary to the Minister of Indian
Affairs and Northern Development
makes him a natural choice for this
important role, allowing him to
continue to build on the important work
that Chuck Strahl and our Government
have done in this area.”
The Prime Minister paid tribute to the
former Government House Leader, the
Honourable Jay Hill.
Earlier this
summer Mr. Hill announced that he will
not stand as a candidate at the next
general election following 17 years of
elected service to his constituents and
Canadians.
Mr. Baird was recently named
“Parliamentarian of the Year,” an award
decided by votes of MPs and Senators
from all parties. a

Cooperative News
Starting over at a new location
The
Filipino
Solidarity
Cooperative, founded by five people in
2004, should have closed down when
the first president left it in shambles in
July 2006. It did not cease to operate
because those who were left behind
thought that something could be done
to save it. It has been more than four
years ago, and nothing much has
changed, except the location. In order
to avoid paying a huge rent, the Coop
had to move to a duplex apartment
temporarily but because we signed a
lease for 6 months, it was not possible
to move out before its expiration on
July 31, 2010.
Moving two times in a period
of six months is not an easy task.
Needless to say, it is even more
difficult if not impossible to do it almost
singlehandedly. I had two volunteers
who helped in some of the packing,
Sophie Toledo came at 2 p.m. and we
finished working at 2:30 a.m. I also
asked Betty Corpuz to come and she
helped to watch the Coop’s stuff that
were placed outside the building while
waiting for the movers to pick them up.
The landlord of the duplex, Mr. and
Mrs. Rico Capulong and their children
also helped in bringing out the stuff to
be moved to make it easier for the
movers to put them into the truck.
There were so much stuff that it took
four loads to finish moving them.
Through this newspaper, I wish to
thank all of these people who helped,
including the mover, Romy Lalisan and
his assistants. I also wish to thank Flor
Rillo who volunteered to do the
electrical work which is urgently
needed to make sure our freezers
work properly.
The Filipino Coop is now
located at 5710 Victoria, in the
basement of the Cusine de Manille
Restaurant. But the place needs a lot
of work – there are no electrical outlets
for the freezers and the other
equipment. It also needs to be
properly secured before storing more
merchandise in it. I thought it would
just need a week to set up shop but I
was extremely disappointed that it
took more time than I thought. For the
past two weeks, I have been running
back and forth to the hardware store,
buying and returning materials. Even
nuts, bolts and screws caused me a
lot of headaches as the work could not
be done without these little things.
Romy Lalisan, the one who helped us
move, installed the iron posts to hang
the display baskets. It was not easy to
do the job because he needed a
special tool to drill holes on tiles. He
also installed the airconditioner but
because of the electrical problem, I
had to ask the help of Flor Rillo, a
retired electrical engineer, and past
president of FAMAS, to come and
help us. He has been working for four
days now as of press time, trying to
connect the wires to the outlets. Due
to the fact that the original wires were
cut, it was difficult to find the
connection.
As there is no door to the
basement of the restaurant, I had to
buy a door and have it installed. This
is not an easy task as installing a door
must be done by someone who knows
how. Again, the work cannot be done
fast enough as the man who is
supposed to install it is working
overtime and cannot tell me when he
can come. Hopefully, he will not make
me wait too long.
Pastora Emma Denny called
me a week ago, and mentioned that
she could ask some handy people to
volunteer in the Coop. I explained to
her that it would be helpful if they
would become members first before
doing volunteer work and patronize
the Coop. She then said that she
would be interested in becoming a
member herself and see what she
could do to encourage the others to
do likewise. I was happy to know that
Pastora Emma Denny had been
reading the Filipino Star and that the
cooperative news had made an impact
on her.
Even though it is taking a lot of
my time to re-establish the Filipino
Coop, I am encouraged to continue
because of the positive feedback that I
have been receiving from many
people. They believe that the location
of the Coop is a big factor. There are
also other factors at play which may
have made people more aware of
important issues in the community. It
seems as if the time has come for all of
us to focus on our common goals of
promoting a harmonious relationship
with our fellow citizens in Montreal.
Slowly but surely, change of attitudes
will happen sooner than later. After all,
we will surely be better off if we focus
on improving our economic life and
helping one another instead of
creating conflicts and all kinds of
political intrigues.
It is our dream to be able to
become as successful as another
solidarity cooperative called Maison
Verte which has 6000 members. They
were able to buy the building on the
corner of Somerled and Sherbrooke
where they are located. During the
first Great Citizens Award ceremony
organized by the City of Montreal, this
solidarity cooperative was given an
award for being a successful
enterprise. There is no reason why The
Filipino Coop cannot do the same
thing. It is located in Cote des Neiges
where there are more than 12000
Filipinos living in one area. If 50% of
this population will become members
and patronize the Coop, the Filipino
Coop is surely going to be successful
and profitable.
To make sure that the Coop
will stay on the right track, we would
like
to have its inauguration and
blessing on Tuesday, September 7,
2010 at 3:30 P.M. We will invite Father
Frank Alvarez of the Filipino Catholic
Mission and Pastora Emma Denny of
the International Christian Fellowship
to officiate in the ceremony and to
offer prayers for the success of the
Coop which is designed to be open to
all, regardless of race, religion and

creed. It is therefore fitting to practice
ecumenism in an important ceremony
that will signify renewal of faith in God
and the power of prayers. We believe
that the Coop will continue to exist for
it has a role to play in building our
community. We also would like to
invite everyone, both members and
prospective members to join us.

It has been almost a month
since we moved to 5710 Victoria but
we cannot operate the store yet until
all the work is completed. Moreover, I
have to find the time to get the
necessary permits for the sign,
occupation, change of address, and
declaration of changes to the board of
directors. Then the next step is to
finish all financial reports for
presentation to the general assembly
which will probably be held either on
October 2, or 16, 2010. The time and
location will be announced in the
September issue of the Filipino Star. a

questions have been part of the longform census.
Mr. Clement's move was aimed
at short-circuiting a court challenge by
Federation
des
communautes
francophones et acadiennes du
Canada. The group maintains that
scrapping the mandatory nature of the
long-form census would violate the
Charter of Rights and the Official
Languages Act.
Earlier Wednesday, the Federal
Court agreed that the situation is urgent
and set a Sept. 27-28 hearing date for
the federation's case.
Mr. Clement also announced
that the government will introduce
legislation this fall to remove the threat

changes are as far as he's prepared to go
to mollify critics of the census changes.
All three opposition parties have
been calling on the government to
eliminate the threat of jail time and
reinstate the mandatory nature of the
long-form census.

4:30 pm. The following thought occurred
to me in recent days, as arguments have
been presented by the government
about why the long-form census
questionnaire should no longer be
mandatory.
To be blunt: I was wondering
what all the fuss was about. Why are
some citizens arguing that the state has
no right to ask certain questions, such as
how many bedrooms are in their house?
Why is this viewed as an unacceptable
intrusion into their lives?
Context is important. If a
stranger stopped me in the street and
asked me how many bedrooms I had in
my house, I would tell him to get lost.
However, when the government of
Canada asks me the same question in an
official census long-form questionnaire, I
react in a completely different manner.
Canada is recognized as having
one of the top statistics agencies in the
world, and I know from my background
as an engineer that there are good
reasons for asking each question.
Statisticians will carefully review
each question to make sure it generates
answers pertinent to the information they
need — information that guides
government policies on everything from
veterans programs to language-support
services, from housing priorities to public
transit planning. I don’t see a bogeyman
behind every government form.
Secondly,
I
expect
the
government to protect the privacy of that
information. Besides, I know that the
number of bedrooms I have in my house
is no big secret. I could walk around the
outside of any Canadians’ home and
probably nail the right number of
bedrooms most of the time.
Yes, I can imagine other ways of
spending my time than filling out the
questionnaire, but I also know this will
happen to me only a few times in my life.
It seems that the great majority
of Canadians feel the same way. They
realize that the census is for the greater
good — which brings me to the issue of
civic duty. Does this concept resonate
with Canadians anymore? I believe it
does. In fact, 95% of Canadians filled out
their
2006
census
long-form
questionnaire without a fuss.
Personally, this is how I look at it:
I live in the best country in the world. I
dare you to find a better one in terms of
democratic institutions, freedom and
fairness, not to mention natural
resources and beauty and so many other
things we value so much.
Does my country insist that I
serve in the military as part of my civic
duty? No, it does not. Does my country
require me to vote when there is an
election? No, it does not (although
everyone should do their duty as a
citizen and cast a ballot).
What does my country insist that
I do? Well, it requires me to pay my taxes
and respect the law. If called upon for
jury duty, it generally requires me to
accept that task. And of course, up until
now, it has required me to answer some
questions at census time. Is this really
asking too much of Canadians? Is this
going too far?
The answer is no. This is not a
big deal.
The equation in my mind is a
simple one, and it has to do with fairness:
My country does many things for me and
it’s only fair that I reciprocate. I do not
start from the premise that the state has
no business in my life and that it should
get out of my face. That’s a selfish
approach.
That might be acceptable if I
lived in the woods and never called upon
any government services to help me out.
But because I do rely on government for
a multitude of services, I feel that
answering a few questions is not the end
of the world. In fact, I insist on it, because
I expect my government to make wise
decisions based on sound information.
Thank
goodness
most
Canadians agree with me. Thank
goodness most Canadians aren’t
paranoid and fearful, believing that they
owe nothing to their country. Thank
goodness that most Canadians believe
in the notion of civic duty.

FAMAS receives accolades for a
successful town festival
FAMAS, the oldest and biggest
association of Filipinos in Montreal and
suburbs, organized the “Pista sa
Nayon” last July 18, 2010 at
MacKenzie King Park. Manny Lagasca
and Dr. Gene Santander, collaborated
well in making the event run smoothly.
According to reports, there were many
“firsts” in this event. The reigning Bb.
Pilipinas of Montreal, Ms. Andrea
Neufeld, who was given
the title of
Goodwill Ambassador for the first time,
volunteers were available to observe all
the security measures and rules were
respected by all.
A report made by Ms. Andrea
Neufeld
acknowledged
the
participation of the following partner
organizations:
Knights and Ladies of Rizal,
Seafarers Brotherhood of Montreal,
Filipino Nurses Association, FCAWI
(Filipino-Canadian Associations of the
West Island), UPS (United Pilipino

was the emcee. This was the first time
that a reigning beauty queen was given
the task of being the master of
ceremonies.
She
said:
“My
participation as emcee for the event
was such an honor! It was beyond
touching to see each association stand
proud as we gathered together, united
in celebration. Truly touching was the
incredible amount of effort that each
person, family, group and association
exerted that day to really make Pista sa
Nayon 2010 a success through the
spirit of Bayanihan.”

new one-hour exercise called Zumba,

reported unofficially that Angie Ogerio ,

Other firsts included an aspect
of ecumenism. Father Frank Alvarez of
the Filipino Catholic Mission officiated
the celebration of the holy mass at 2
p.m. after which a prayer for the
community was offered by Pastora
Emma Denny of the International
Christian Fellowship. Also for the first
time, some other ethnic groups
participated in the festival. This was a
requirement by the City of Montreal.
During the meeting of FAMAS officers
with the Borough councilors, they were
told that the City was satisfied with the
work done by FAMAS because more
president of the Federation of Filipino
Canadian Associations of Quebec,
contributed food for the pot luck of
Famas while James de la Paz paid for
a tent on behalf of his association to
signify his participation for unity.
Some people had expressed
the wish that if FAMAS could manage
the Pista sa Nayon so well, maybe it
should be given the responsibility to
organize our Philippine Independence
Day parade next year. This seems to
show people’s vote of confidence in
FAMAS as a unifying force. a

Any Which Way ...

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: I am very
pleased
to
acknowledge
the
tremendous amount of categorical
endorsements heaped on me by more
people than I could have ever
imagined for standing up to the man
widely considered as the journalistic
bully in the Filipino community. Almost
to a man, those people said that
nobody else had ever dared to do what
I did against the guy who has been
terrorizing them for years.
But of course, not everybody is
happy. There is still a few who think
that I am “may pagkamayabang” and
that my articles should not have been
published at all. If those people have a
sense of fairness, they should read, if
they have not already done so, Fred C.
Magallanes’ and Julita Parado’s
articles about me before making any
judgment.
Magallanes, as well as Parado,
scoffed at me, debased my job,
ridiculed my intellect and questioned
my sanity. No way would I have kept
quiet and not squelched their personal
attacks even if I would come across as
“may pagkamayabang.” No man worth
his salt would. I did not deserve to be
so denigrated. Those two did not
attack my arguments; they attacked
me. So I decided to do something that
I had never done before and
something that was not done to them
before either. I put my bravest face on.
And the rest is history.
Honestly, I did not set out to
snatch the community from the rabid
claws of that bully because such a task
was too Herculean for my ability. I was
only thinking of my own selfish interest
when I started out to face the local
tyrant one-on-one despite my obvious
disadvantage. If the community
happened to derive some benefit from
my efforts, it is a sheer coincidence,
but definitely a welcome bonus
nonetheless.
The battle might have been
won or almost won, but the war is still
raging on and far from over. So let’s
keep up our collective vigilance and
not let our guards down until the
oppressor is banished, or, at least
placed in his proper perspective. We
have to continue reminding him that
his journalistic effort is misguided and
not conducive to peace and unity, and
that he should use his talent and
newspaper for a much better purpose
than harassing his own community and
sow intrigues and discord among its
members. I acknowledge his talent and
writing ability, but his purpose for using
it is another story.

JIMMY
BONDOC: This guy
purporting to be Jimmy Bondoc has
sent Mrs. Zeny Kharroubi an e-mail
that is horribly filled with glaring
grammatical errors (perhaps done
deliberately to mask his or her true
identity). In his e-mail, he is unfairly
faulting Ms. Kharroubi for her
straightforward and polite reply to
Julita Parado's scathing letter that the
latter sent to the former before the Pista
sa Nayon on July 18, 2010.

Julita Parado as a wolf in sheep's
clothing. Listen to this Jimmy Boy: I
can tell you for sure that for every
Jimmy Bondoc who is against the
action Ms. Kharroubi has taken, there
are 100 or so Peters, Pauls and Marys
who are for and most likely to join the
Coop after seeing through Ms.
Kharroubi's candor and decency.
Jimmy Bondoc even took pain
in mentioning that he didn't know Julita
Parado at all, yet he was so willing to
take up the cudgels in her defence. He
would like us to believe that he was an
objective person by dissociating
himself from the person he was
defending. We are not naive, Jimmy!
What makes me scratch my
head is why he has been very silent
about my articles on Julita Parado.
Compared to Ms. Kharroubi's, my
articles are far more unflattering, much
more offending, much harsher, and
therefore, much more provoking yet
Jimmy
Bondoc
has
remained
unperturbed and couldn't care less.
But out of the blue, he came out from
under the rock to sting Ms. Kharroubi
for the virtually harmless reply-letter
that she sent Parado.
Jimmy Bondoc even has the
nerve to say that Ms. Kharroubi and her
supporters are a disgrace, a shame.
Obviously, he doesn't understand what
those words mean. If he did, he
wouldn't say what he said about Ms.
Kharroubi. It's like a thief saying that
the police who caught him stealing a
disgrace and performing his duty a
shame.
The world is really getting
funnier and funnier every day because
of the Jimmy Bondocs of his species
living in it. There are Federico C.
Magallanes, Julita Parado, the Three
Stooges, and now, Jimmy Bondoc. Oh,
God, the snakes are multiplying in the
Filipino Community like they are on
chthonic Medusa's head! Is there a
snake charmer in the house?

Dear EarthTalk: I know that local food
has health and environmental benefits,
but my local grocer only carries a few
items. Is there a push for bigger
supermarkets to carry locally produced
food?

By eating locally sourced
foods, we strengthen the bond
between local farmers and our
communities, stay connected to the
seasons in our part of the world,
promote crop diversity, and minimize
the energy intensive, greenhouse-gasemitting transportation of food from
one part of the world to another. Also,
since local crops are usually harvested
at their peak of freshness and typically
delivered to stores within a day,
customers can be sure they are getting
the tastiest and most nutritious forms of
the foods they like.
Luckily for consumers and the
environment, local produce and other
foods are now more widely available
than they have been for decades. The
first national grocery chain to prioritize
local
producers,
perhaps
not
surprisingly, was natural foods retailer
Whole Foods, which was buying from
local farmers and ranchers since it
opened its first store in 1980 in Austin,
Texas. Today each of the company's
270-plus stores in 38 U.S. states
prioritizes local sourcing—so much so
that its customers take it for granted.
Whole Foods’ relationships and
distribution arrangements with local
producers serve as models for the
leading national grocery chains, many
of which are beginning to source some
produce locally when the season is
right.
Some are taking more initiative
than others. Perhaps most notable is
Walmart. Back in 2008 the company
committed to sourcing more local fruits
and vegetables to keep produce prices
down and provide affordable, fresh and
healthy choices. Today more than
2,800 Walmart Supercenters and
Neighborhood Markets across the
country rely on a diverse network of
small local growers to provide
produce—making
Sam
Walton's
company
the
nation’s
largest
purchaser of local produce. During
summer months, at least one-fifth of the
produce available in Walmart stores is
grown within the same state as the
given store.
The
company’s
Heritage
Agriculture program encourages farms
within a day’s drive of one of its
warehouses to grow crops that the
company would otherwise have to
source from so far away that freshness
would be jeopardized and the fuel
burned and greenhouse gases emitted
in the process would be substantial.
While the Heritage program currently
accounts for only four to six percent of
the company's total domestic produce
sales, the company is aiming for 20
percent within the next few years.
Other big grocery chains
aren’t far behind. Safeway, one of the
top three grocery chains in the country,
prides themselves on local sourcing,
getting nearly a third of its produce
nationwide
from
local/regional
growers. In heavy agricultural regions
like California, the figure can be as
high as 45 percent. The company has
also made a big push into organic
products, just like its biggest
competitor, Walmart.
If the chain grocer near you
doesn’t do a good job stocking locally
sourced food, there are alternatives.
Community Supported Agriculture
programs, in which consumers
“subscribe” to the produce of a given
farm by paying monthly dues that
entitles them to a box of fresh produce
every week, are more popular than
ever, as are local farmers’ markets,
food co-ops and independent natural
foods markets. To find local food near
you, visit the Local Harvest, which lists
organic food sources by zip code and
offers a wealth of resources for those
looking to learn more about where
their food comes from and how it is
produced.

Dear EarthTalk: How are wild turkeys
faring in the U.S.? Occasionally I'll see
some crossing the road, but how well
could they be doing with all the
development going on around them?

No one can be sure how many
tens of millions of wild turkeys roamed
what was to become the continental
United States when the Puritans dined
on them at the first Thanksgiving in
1621 near Plymouth Rock, but there
were obviously enough of the birds to
make them easy prey. By the late
1700s turkeys across the frontier were
being harvested with reckless
abandon. The food shortages that
accompanied the Civil War accelerated
demand for wild turkeys, and their
numbers started to dwindle to
startlingly low levels. By the early
1900s, only some 30,000 wild turkeys
remained; the birds had been
extirpated across almost half of their
former range.
But things started to turn
around for wild turkeys in the 1920s.
For starters, millions of acres cleared
by the pioneers began to regenerate
into the type of woodland habitat
where the birds could thrive. But the
real boost for wild turkeys came in the
form of legislation. At the urging of
hunters, state wildlife agencies, and
the firearms industry, Congress passed
the landmark Federal Aid in Wildlife
Restoration Act (Pittman-Robertson
Act) in 1937, which placed an excise
tax on guns, ammo and other hunting
gear. A portion of the billions of dollars
raised from the law have been and
continue to be allocated toward
restoring wildlife habitat across the
country.
By 1959, wild turkey numbers jumped
sixteen fold, topping half a million birds
across the U.S. A 1973 wild turkey
census by the then newly formed
National Wild Turkey Federation
(NWTF) turned up something like 1.3
million birds. NWTF, which was
founded by hunters to aid in turkey
conservation efforts, would turn out to
be instrumental in shepherding the
wild turkey's recovery by channeling

hundreds of millions of dollars in
charitable donations and grants into
habitat recovery and bird relocation
projects. Although the birds will likely
never return to the population levels
pre-dating white settlement, they
haven't been healthier in 300+ years.
These days as many as seven million
wild turkeys roam the countryside and
can be found in every U.S. state
besides Alaska.
Of course, our success in
restoring habitat for wild turkeys has
also been beneficial for a wide range of
wild animals. Conservations credit the
visionary Pittman-Robertson Act (along
with the hard work of dedicated wildlife
managers) as instrumental in the
recovery of not only wild turkeys but
also once struggling populations of
white-tailed deer, pronghorn antelope,
wood duck, beaver, black bear,
Canada goose, American elk, desert
bighorn sheep, bobcat, mountain lion,
and several species of predatory birds.
Besides the animals and
biodiversity benefitting from species
recovery, hunters can also rejoice,
especially given that it has been their
money that has funded many of the
projects to restore habitat where they
hunt. Turkey hunting is traditionally an
autumn pursuit, culminating at
Thanksgiving, of course, but each
state has its own laws regarding when
and where turkey hunting is allowed.
NWTF provides a free online state-bystate “Fall Turkey Hunting Guide” with
hunting season dates and other
pertinent information to help hunters
plan their next trip wherever it may take
them in the continental U.S. The
website also serves as an invaluable
resource for information and resources
pertaining to conservation, hunting
and other topics related to wild
turkeys.

Dear EarthTalk: I always thought
cotton was eco-friendly, but I recently
heard otherwise. What’s so bad about
cotton? And where can I find organic
cotton clothing? -- Jamie Hunter, Twin
Falls, ID
There’s a lot “bad” about
conventionally grown cotton—cotton
grown with the aid of synthetic
chemicals, that is. The Organic Trade
Association (OTA), a nonprofit trade
group
representing
America’s
burgeoning organic cotton industry,
considers cotton “the world’s dirtiest
crop” due to its heavy use of
insecticides.
The
nonprofit
Environmental Justice Foundation
(EJF) reports that cotton uses 2.5
percent of the world’s cultivated land
yet uses 16 percent of the world’s
insecticides—more than any other
single major crop.
Three of the most acutely
hazardous insecticides, as determined
by the World Health Organization, are
well represented among the top 10
most commonly used in producing
cotton. One of them, Aldicarb, “can kill
a man with just one drop absorbed
through the skin,” says OTA, “yet it is
still used in 25 countries and the U.S.,
where 16 states have reported it in their
groundwater.”
Conventionally grown cotton
also uses large amounts of nitrogenbased synthetic fertilizer—almost a
third of a pound, says the OTA, to grow
one pound of raw cotton. To put that in
perspective, it takes just under one
pound of raw cotton to make one tshirt. Researchers have found that the
fertilizers used on cotton are the most
detrimental to the environment,
running off into freshwater habitats and
groundwater and causing oxygen-free
dead zones in water bodies. The
nitrogen oxides formed during the
production and use of these fertilizers
are also a major part of the agricultural
sector’s greenhouse gas emissions.
This is all true despite that the
use of sprayed insecticides is quickly
decreasing with the advent of
genetically engineered cotton seeds
that have insecticides bred right into
them. A third of global cotton cropland
and 45 percent of world cotton
production now uses genetically
engineered seeds. This poses a whole
other set of issues, as some scientists
fear that the proliferation of such

immunities and even the unleashing of
so-called “super pests” that can resist
virtually any pesticide.

(1) Take your Office’s Green
Footprint:

(2) Save Trees: The average
office worker uses 10,000 sheets of

(3) Power Down: Artificial lighting
accounts for almost half of all office
electricity use. Turn off lights that are
not being used. Better yet, install
motion sensors that do it automatically
when no one is in the room. Also, shut
down computers overnight, and set
them to go into sleep mode when
sitting idle.
(4) Minimize E-Waste: Upgrade or
repair the office computers instead of
junking them. So-called “e-waste”—

the world now.
(5) Telecommute: Encourage workers
to work at home when possible to save
car trips. For those who must come to
the office, encourage bicycling if it is
safe. Also some firms now subsidize

Proclivity for vs. proclivity to
I made an error in the title of
my article in the July 2010 edition of
the Filipino Star. The “to” in “Fred C.
Magallanes’ proclivity to lying is
legendary” should have been “for.”
“proclivity to” should be followed by a
verb, and “proclivity for” followed by a
noun or a gerund. Gerund is a form of
a verb when functioning as a noun as
writing in “Writing is fun.” For example:
I have the proclivity for singing. I have
the proclivity to sing.

Often times when I am on
assignment, client asks what computer
is best for editing videos and photos. I
normally tell them it depends on their
budget and the platform they are
comfortable with. Talking about budget
on buying a computer is a broad topic.
So I tell them to visit their favorite
computer shop and ask the salesman
what computer they can offer
according to your needs and budget
and maybe able to give a price which
will not break your bank.
If you are really serious in
editing videos either for fun, family
entertainment or aspiring to become
Michael Moore, here are some
questions to ask yourself:
1. Change or not to change.
Is your workstation just not fast
enough to do what you want? Perhaps
it is time for a new computer or maybe
just an upgrade Your workstation is
something you have to live with, so you
should take a few things into
consideration before making a
purchase.

Windows layout to look like a Mac.
Essentially, if you can do it on a PC,
you can do it on a Mac and vice versa.
There are, of course, some exceptions,
where programs like Adobe CS4 may
be more stable on a Mac. There is also

Mac. The big difference between the
two, however, is the price tag. A Mac,
with the same hardware as a PC, can
cost up to double. If you're on a tight
budget, a Mac may not be right for you.
If you've got money to spend and like
the Mac design, then it may be worth a
shot.
3. Desktop or Notebook
As technology has been
progressing,
the
performance
difference between a notebook and
desktop has narrowed. Workstation
graphics cards are now available in
otherwise fast notebook may appear
slow just because of these load times.
The final difference, and sometimes the
most important, is that hard drives are
not meant to be moved around.
Dropping a notebook or carrying it
around can cause damage to the hard
drive that can result in loss of your
data. If you do video editing, you will
most likely need an external hard drive
to back up all of your data. Desktops
are faster, cheaper and more stable
than laptops. However, laptops can still
get the job done.
4. To Build or Not to Build?
There are a lot of great companies out
there that will build a PC for you. Some
specialize in making custom gaming
and video editing PCs, like iBuypower
and Polywell. Other companies, like
Dell, HP and Sony, have less
specialization but will still get the job
done. All of these companies are out to
make money, so it will cost more than
building it from pieces. It is a lot easier,
though, to have a computer assembled
and delivered to your front door. If you
are on a budget, there are great sites
like
www.newegg.com
and
www.pricewatch.com that will help you
find the parts you need to build your
computer.
My son JR got his computer
from www newegg .com and loves it.
All new parts and PCs are covered
under warranty, so if it breaks, you can
always return it. Building a PC is not
hard, but if you have never done it
before read some tutorials first.
5. Intel or Xeon processors.

7200rpm notebook drives can get up
to 90MB/s. A standard desktop drive,
however, can get over 100MB/s. This
will affect how long it takes Windows to
boot and programs to load. An

Intel Core i7 is not only faster but also
cheaper than a comparable Xeon
processor. In short, if you want a fast
computer, buy an Intel Core i7. If you
want a cheaper fast computer, buy an
Intel Core 2 Quad or an AMD Phenom
quad core.
Memory
6. Do I need to increase Memory?
RAM or Random Access
Memory has been exponentially
increasing in size. Samsung currently
makes a 16GB DDR3 memory stick but
just because the grass looks greener
on the other side doesn't mean it is
better. To quickly check how much
RAM you really need, load up all the
programs normally used in Windows.
Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and start the
Windows Task Manager. Once inside,
go to the Performance tab. You will be
able to see the total Physical Memory

President orders probe of Police held in torture video

Thursday ordered the thorough
investigation of a road accident in
Northern Luzon that left 40 people
dead and injured nine others.
President Aquino said he asked the
Highway Patrol Group and the Land
Transportations Office “to expedite
the investigation to find out what
actually transpired” why such bus
accident occurred.
On Wednesday, a bus carrying
49 passengers to San Fernando, La
Union, reportedly lost its breaks
along the stretch of the Quirino
Highway in Sition Guiwing,
Banangan, Sablan, and plunged
into a ravine.
President Aquino, however,
said “the faulty mechanical break is
such a lame excuse.” Thus, he
wanted to study “how thorough the
inspections are for all of these
transports and also the driving
skills.”
“In fact I want to study the entire
industry [to] find out what can be
done to improve that particular
situation,” the President added.
Forty people died and nine
others were injured in the bus
accident. The survivors of the
accident were immediately brought
to Baguio General Hospital and
Medical Center for treatment.
Among those killed were a
family of four Filipino-Americans
who were visiting their old
hometown and scheduled to fly
back to Florida, police reports said.
“We grieve for everybody who
was lost. And we really want to find
out how can this be minimized to
the greatest extent possible,”
President Aquino said.
The bus conductor, John
Patrick Flores, was among those
who survived the accident. He
jumped out of the bus before it fell
into the ravine and only sustained
bruises.
Flores said the bus driver
attempted to hit concrete barriers
along the highway, but upon
negotiating a sharp curve, the bus
crashed toward a nearby house
and plunged into a ravine.

France extends its condolences to
the families and relatives of the
victims and assures the Philippine
authorities of its solidarity. a

Friday over a torture video allegedly
filmed on a mobile phone at a police
station in a Manila slum.
The graphic recording, which has
enraged the public since it was
broadcast on national television on
Tuesday, showed a man in civilian
clothes whipping a naked man writhing
on a white tiled floor.
In between blows, the torturer
yanked a rope that appeared to be tied
to the victim's penis.
Chief Superintendent Roberto
Rongavilla, head of a police task force
investigating the incident, said a formal
complaint against the policemen had
been read at a police internal affairs
hearing.
"These people are now in the
custody of the Manila police," he said.
All 11 men had been posted at the
Asuncion community police precinct in
the high-crime Manila slum district of
Tondo, but were suspended after a
public outcry over the video sparked a
government investigation.
Rongavilla said the officer featured
in the torture video was the former
commander of the precinct. Local news
reports said he had denied the
allegations.
Rongavilla said the naked man was
a suspected robber whose wife had
reported him missing since March.
"He was part of a group engaged in
holdups
and
bag-snatching,"
Rongavilla said. "It appears some other
members of the gang had been killed in
clashes with the police."
While allegations of torture and
extra-judicial killings carried out by
police and military are nothing new, the
broadcast of the video was the first time
such an incident has been seen on
public television.
Local television network ABS-CBN,
which broadcast the clip, said an
unnamed informant filmed the scene
with a mobile phone, but it was unclear
when it was taken.
Rongavilla told ABS-CBN that the
investigation would also look into
allegations that the officer accused of
torturing the naked man had committed
similar offences.
"Many people are coming out
alleging that their sons and husbands
had been given similar treatment," he
added. a

Presidential Commission on Good
Government (PCGG) Commissioner
Ricardo Abcede over the weekend
proposed the immediate disposal of
assets surrendered to the government
to help generate funds for the
reportedly
cash-strapped
administration of President Benigno
Aquino 3rd. Abcede noted that the
fabled pieces of jewelry of former first
lady and now Rep. Imelda Marcos
would be first on the list.
In an interview with The Manila
Times, Abcede said surrendered assets
can be disposed of properly for the
right price, and help generate funds for
the cash strapped government.
“If retained by the Aquino
administration, I will push for the selling
of the jewelry of Mrs. Marcos and
surrendered assets. It is going to help
generate income for the government,”
he said.
The proposal came after the PCGG
commissioner recommen-ded the sale
of
government-owned
television
stations, RPN 9 and IBC 13, to private
entities.
He explained that surrendered
assets can be sold since they are
already government properties, unlike
sequestered properties which are still
the subjects of court proceedings.
The pieces of jewelry surrendered
to the government particularly those in
Hawaii, known as the Roumelitoes
collections, were earlier estimated to be
valued at P15 billion. a

President Aquino goes online to fight corruption

President Benigno Aquino is opening
the doors of government through
cyberspace, promising unprecedented
public access to help fight entrenched
corruption.
Filipinos are among the world's
most enthusiastic users of social
networking sites such as Facebook
and Twitter, and Aquino says he wants
this huge online community to become
a new force in stamping out graft.
"We cannot underestimate the
potency or the power of digital media,"
said presidential spokesman Herminio
Coloma, who headed a project
launched this week linking Aquino's
website (www.president.gov.ph) to
social networking platforms.
"It is a very viral, contagious and
infectious process that really creates
and
multiplies
awareness
all
throughout."
Coloma called on Filipino netizens
to go to Aquino's various web pages
and report anyone involved in
corruption.
They can also give general
comments about how to improve
government operations as part of
Aquino's broader pledge to ensure his
six-year rule is more transparent than
his graft-tainted predecessors'.
Aquino may not necessarily be
able to personally read or answer all
the complaints filtered from Twitter or
Facebook,
but
a
special
communications team will carefully
comb through all the complaints,
Coloma said.
Aquino won presidential elections
in May by a landslide after promising to
stamp out corruption that for decades
has infected Philippine society.
By using the Internet, he is aiming
to give ordinary Filipinos a sense that
they can finally stand up to corrupt
officials or the ultra rich who have long
been able to avoid scrutiny.
"This will generate a groundswell
of public participation in good
governance," Coloma said.
The finance department is running
a
parallel
website
(www.perangbayan.com)
where
anyone can anonymously complain
about corrupt government officials or
provide details about tax cheats and
smugglers.
It is also linked to Facebook and
has already received 800 reports in
recent weeks, some of which have
become the basis for investigations,
the government said.
Internal Revenue Commissioner
Kim Henares told AFP her office was
receiving up to 20 tips a day against
tax evaders through her Facebook
page as well as through dedicated
telephone hotlines she set up.
"You can see a lot of people
coming out. In Facebook, people
added me up as a friend and posted
their complaints," she said.
"People feel they have a stake in
this government."
Nick Gonzalez, a web analyst who
operates CheckFacebook.com, ranks
the Philippines as the seventh-biggest
market in the world for the social
networking site with nearly 16 million
users.
That means nearly a fifth of the
population use Facebook.
Aquino's campaign has made a
promising start -- over 16,000 hits in
the first two hours of his website's
launch on Monday alone.
Astro del Castillo, director of the
Association of Securities Analysts of
the Philippines, welcomed the
government's online efforts.
But, amid a woeful history of
previous government's launching highprofile but ultimately unsuccessful
campaigns against corruption, he said
it was too early to say whether
Aquino's online anti-graft effort would
succeed.
"We hope he will be able to catch
crooks
and

government," he said.
"(But) we will only know that it is
effective once we see them taking

Arroz Caldo
Ingredients
* 4 chicken thighs (or drumsticks)
* 2 cups of sticky rice (uncooked)
* 1 qt of chicken stock (fat free,
sodium free)
* 2 knobs of ginger (peeled, chopped
1/4 inches)
* 4 cloves of garlic (chopped roughly)
* 1 onion or 2 shallots
* green onions
* 2 tablespoons patis (fish sauce)
* salt and pepper
How to make Arroz Caldo - Filipino
Congee
Total comfort food and perfect for a loved
one with a cold.
Arroz Caldo literally translates to "hot rice"
and this was one of the favorite dishes by
Filipinos on any occasion.
1.
Get a big pot hot and add some
olive oil, and brown the chicken. This
means don't move it until it has
sufficiently browned on one side. Salt
and pepper.
2.
When you flip over the chicken,
add the chopped onion or shallots and
let it sautee until the other side of the
chicken browns.
3.
Add garlic, give a quick toss and
add uncooked rice.
4.
Mix around the rice and add the
patis (vietnamese fish sauce works well
too). Add ginger. Mix around and add
chicken stock.
5.
Cover and bring to simmer.
6.
When it simmers, bring heat to
medium and continue to stir. Making sure
rice doesn't stick to the bottom of the pot.
7.
Continue to check the tenderness
of the rice (much like risotto). If mixture is
getting too thick, loosen with tepid water.
8.
When rice is cooked just right,
serve with chicken in a bowl and garnish
with green onions and/or deep fried
shallots and garlic and a grind of black
pepper (white pepper works well too).

Procedure:
Mix the sweet rice flour with the mashed
sweet potatoes, occasionally adding
water to moisten the flour until it
resembles a soft bread dough. Shape
into balls or patties and deep fry in hot oil
until brown. Set aside.
* 2 cups mochiko sweet rice flour
(glutinous rice flour)
* 3 cups coconut milk, buy 2 cans
* 3/4 cup coconut, sport strings
(macapuno)
* 1 cup brown sugar
* oil, for frying
* bamboo skewers (usually four balls
onto one skewer) (optional)
Procedure:
1. DOUGH: Mix 2 cups of mochiko and
2 cups of coconut milk together. Mixture
will be very wet. Add macapuno to the
dough.
2. Make into 1" to 1 1/2" balls and deep
fry. (TIP: while forming, using two
spoons. Then, immediately put into frying
pan).
3. SAUCE: Boil 1 cup coconut milk and
brown sugar until sticky. Dip karioka into
the sauce and eat or pour/drizzle the
sauce on the karioka. Skewer. Some
people don't like their karioka sweet so
they just roll/dust brown sugar on top of
the karioka while its hot.

Halway through eating a bowl, squeeze a
bit of lemon juice (or calamansi) on top
of the hot rice to jazz things up again.
Karioka (mother’s special recipe)
Ingredients:
* 1 box (16 oz) glutinous rice flour
* Water (enough to mold karioka)
* 1 can baker’s coconut flakes
* ½ to ¾ (8 – 12 oz) box dark brown
sugar
* 1 egg
* Water (enough to make sugar
coating)
* ¼ C milk
Procedure:
1. In a large bowl, mix rice flour, coconut
flakes, egg, and milk until crumbly.
2. Sprinkle just enough water so that you
can easily mold the mixture in your hand
into little bite-size nuggets. Make sure the
mixture is not too wet, or else it will not fry
right. Set aside the nuggets.
3. In a deep saucepan or wok, deep-fry
the nuggets till golden brown and then set
aside.
4. In another saucepan, combine
brown sugar and water on low to
medium-low heat, just to melt the brown
sugar, forming a thick, brown sugar
sauce.
5. Remove from heat. While still warm,
pour the sugar sauce over the nuggets,
and quickly stir the sauce around so that
it coats the karioka nuggets.
6. Let the karioka cool for the coating
to set, and then serve. Serves 8-10
Add the cooked karioka and stir briskly
until all the sugar syrup is coated on the
karioka. Transfer to a greased plate
making sure that they don't stick to each
other or use a barbecue stick.
On a skillet, combine 3/4 cup sugar and
1/4 cup water. Wait for it to caramelize.
Do not stir. The color should be amber.

all high school students to apply to Writing
Democracy, an essay writing contest. Our
company is dedicated to producing
socially and politically relevant theatre that
supports a multicultural vision of society,
promoting interculturalism through works
of theatre. Through the essay, we wish to
encourage students to come to the theatre
as well as be engaged in contemporary,
social debate.
A total of $500 will be awarded to
five selected winners - $250 for 1st place,
$100 for 2nd place, and $50 for third, fourth
and fifth place. The contest will close on
October 13th, 2009. The winners will be
announced on October 29th, 2010 and the

attempted kidnapping of her
dad, Delfin Geronimo, can be
forgiven but due process of the
law must apply. Rayver Cruz,
meanwhile,
pleads
with
criminals
to
stop
their
shenanigans.
The Pop star is open to the
idea of forgiving the alleged
would-be kidnapper of her dad.
“Siyempre naman po, kung
tungkol sa pagpapatawad, opo
naman. Kung ang Diyos nga
nagpapatawad, eh,” she said
on “Showbiz News Ngayon,”
Aug. 17.
But she also believes that
the law must take its course.
“Pero meron po tayong

her private life, Anne said she wants
to veer away from questions
pertaining to Erwan since he’s not in
show business.
“Ayoko siyang pag-usapan
especially since three weeks ago
lang so many people were tweeting
him. ‘I heard you and Anne are no
longer dating.’ Parang, I said so
sorry you got into the whole tsismis

Without stating the specifics,
comedienne Pokwang acknowledged
that she has hurt her former
“Wowowee” co-host Willie Revillame,
and with that, she apologized to him.

Nasaktan din ako sa mga nangyayari.
Pasensya ka na kuya,” Pokwang
directed to Willie during her first tell-all
interview on “The Buzz,” August 22, to
address the intrigues that have been
hounding her for months.
Her detractors—many of whom are
said to be Willie’s defenders—allege
that Pokwang has become a stuck-up,
an ingrate who purportedly claimed that
she was responsible for the high ratings
of “Wowowee” while Willie was on
indefinite leave.
She was also criticized for her
emotional admission on “Showbiz
News Ngayon” last June that she would
miss “Wowowee” guest host Robin
Padilla because he treated her and her
co-hosts with utmost respect.
Pokwang explained her reason for
the
declaration,
which
Willie’s
supporters allegedly interpreted as a
blow against him.
“Siguro kasi dahil sa sobra-sobra
na ‘yong pananakit sa’kin. Hindi mo rin
ako masisisi siguro, sa araw-araw ba
naman na tirahin ka ng tirahin tapos
makakaramdam ka ng isang tao
(Robin) na talagang kino-comfort ka.”
Because
of
their
tainted
relationship, Willie is said to have
wanted Pokwang (as well as Robin’s
current squeeze Mariel Rodriguez) out
of the supposed re-launch of
“Wowowee.” Pokwang said she was
shocked with the request.
“Siyempre po nagulat ako kasi
bilang ginagawa lang naman po namin
‘yong trabaho. 'Tsaka sa dami po ng
mas maliit ang suweldo sa’min sa
‘Wowowee,’ mas kailangan po nila ang
trabaho,” she related.
Willie has previously clarified the
rumor, saying he did not zero in on
Pokwang and Mariel, but he requested
for all the female hosts to be removed
since he wanted a reformat.
Pokwang became even more
emotional when she started addressing
the various labels that her detractors
gave her.
She said she could never be
arrogant and swellheaded because
“ang dami pong nag-ga-guide sa’kin;
ang dami ko pong kaibigan sa
industriya na puwede akong sabunutan
‘pag ginawa ko ‘yon.”
Pokwang is well aware that
acquiring those traits could cost her her
job. “And ‘pag nawalan po ako ng
trabaho, papaano po ‘yong mga
umaasa sa’kin? Kaya hinding-hindi ko
po magagawa ang magmalaki,” she
said, her voice cracking.
She deemed that others might
have misinterpreted her being vocal
about her rights.
“Kasi ganoon yata talaga kapagka
alam mo na ‘yong karapatan mo, alam
mo na kung paano ka mangatuwiran, at
alam mo na kung kailan ka nasasaktan.
‘Pag lumabas na ‘yong boses mo, para
sa kanila laki na ng ulo ‘yon,” Pokwang
said.
The "Pilipinas Win na Win" host also
refuted allegations that she is
ungrateful for what Willie has done for
her.
“Marunong po akong tumanaw ng
utang na loob. Kaya lang kasi,
magsalita ako’t hindi, isa lang ang
magiging husga sa’kin noong mga
malapit sa kanya talaga,” she related.
Pokwang tried to shield her
family—particularly her mother, whom
she said has a heart disease and high
blood pressure tendencies—from the
rumors by telling them not to buy
newspapers or watch related news
about her. However, her mom’s
constant trips to the market led her to
the knowledge of the whole scenario,
and then to the hospital for a couple of
weeks.
Recalling her conversation with her
mother, Pokwang broke down.
“Sabi ko ‘Ma, ikaw ang nanay ko,
Willie Revillame
ikaw ang nagluwal sa akin. Mas ikaw
ang nakakakilala sa akin kung sino
talaga ako… Alam mo ‘yong mga
pinagdaanan natin mula noong
ipinanganak mo ko, hanggang sa
naging successful ako. Sa trabaho ko,
ikaw ang kasama ko araw-araw. Ikaw
ang nakakakilala sa’kin, kaya mas ikaw
ang nasasaktan…’”
This, seemingly, is the reason
Pokwang previously admitted that she
has “tampo” towards her “Kuya” Willie
because of the malicious attacks of his
friends from the media.
The comedienne said she has no
idea why hecklers keep bashing her.
"Wala akong masamang ginawa sa
kanila. Sa pagkakaalam ko pa nga po,
nakatulong pa nga po ako kahit
papano sa kanila.”
And though they treat her as such,
Pokwang said she will still lend them a
helping hand if they'll need it again.
Speaking of which, Pokwang
confirmed reports that she is owed a
huge amount of money yet unpaid.
“Pero usaping pera na po ‘yan e.
Pero okay na lang ho sa’kin ‘yan. ‘Di ko
na lang ho aanuhin ‘yan. Ang aking
lang, ‘wag niyo nang saktan ang
pamilya ko. Tama na po,” she said,

Pokwang.
However,
the
comedienne’s best friend, Chokoleit,
dropped a hint over his Twitter account.

bwahahahhaha! Kapal ng feeez!!
Chaka mo Shrek!” he tweeted several
minutes after Pokwang’s interview.
The show’s head writer, Darla
Sauler, also gave clues for her curious
followers.
Her tweets read: “’Yung tao pong
may utang kay Pokwang, ay isa rin sa
mga taong naninira sa kanya ngayon!"
“Tumpak na tumpak! Yung naninira

Pokwang may have a lot to thank
for, but for her upcoming birthday, she

The Last
Analysis

Some people may not know
that the business of the Filipino
Solidarity Cooperative (FSC) has been
moved from Van Horne to Victoria Ave.,
at the basement of Cuisine de Manille
Restaurant last month, July 30, 2010 to
be exact.
The Coop president Zenaida
Kharroubi, almost single-handedly
shouldered all the truckloads of
headaches and made the transfer
possible believing that it is a strategic
place to locate the coop’s business.
Back during those college
days, professors typically would
instruct their students, who take
business courses/programs, to use the
SWOT analysis to study or examine a
business structure both for old
(existing)
and
new
business
propositions.
The SWOT is a strategic
planning method used to evaluate the
Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities,
and Threats affecting a business
venture. It involves specifying the
objective of the project and identifying
the internal and external factors that
are favorable and unfavorable to the
realization of its goal.
This time we will try to analyze
the Filipino Coop’s retail business
however we will not use the SWOT
analysis. We will try to use instead the
marketing mix as a guide.
Marketing
mix
modeling
measures the potential value of all
marketing inputs and identifies
marketing investments that are most
likely to produce long-term revenue
and growth. The elements of the
marketing mix are often referred to as
the five P’s, explained in most
marketing textbooks, to wit:
•
PLACE – the most important
thing to consider when starting a
business is the location. The place of
the store will make or break our
business, so find a spot with lots of
pedestrian traffic and great visibility.
We could say that our new location
now is better, strategic, and more
practical for a small business.
•
PRODUCT – right now our
store has an incomplete product
display due to myriad reasons. The
problem is like a chicken-and-egg
puzzle. Maybe later on, with the help of
the members, we could slowly improve
the display shelves with complete
product categories.
•
PEOPLE – manpower is the
best and important asset of any
business. In a coop structure, there are
two
types of people: ordinary
members (who could be an employee
or a buyer who patronizes the
business) and the officers (board of
directors and the management) who
manage, make plans, and update its
constitution and by-laws to make the
business prosper.
The organizational structure
should be in place first to set plans for
the coop. Cooperatives do believe in
collaboration of ideas, deliberate, and
implement the best solutions in order
to succeed.
Cooperatives would not thrive
without sincere and dedicated officers
and staff, who would be willing to help
other people. Cooperatives would fail if
they are being run by one man only
because
coops
are
business
organizations owned and managed by
a group of individuals for their mutual
benefit.
Cooperatives are autonomous
associations of persons united
voluntarily to meet their common
economic, social, and cultural needs
and aspirations through jointly-owned
and
democratically-controlled
enterprises. Cooperatives may also be
defined as a business owned and
controlled equally by the members
who use its services or by the people
who work there.
Presently, this is the main
problem of the Filipino Coop. We are
just hoping that someday we would
see a lot of volunteers with good hearts
to dedicate their time, expertise, or
resources. Like a networking business,
duplication is very important. We need
to continuously find and train new
people so that we could delegate the
different aspects of the tasks.
We also hope that someday
we could develop a lot of coop leaders,
a combination of young and “not-soyoung” coop leaders who know how to
manage both the people and the
business.
The coop is also in need of
people who could help the coop
directors do retail market research and
a sample business plan to be used as
a guide in creating our own business
outline. It is necessary to ensure that
our business has a fighting chance.
We must work to identify the coop’s
competitors and to determine which
segment of the population will respond
enthusiastically to our products and
services.
•
PRICING – this is also
important because some of our
members would not buy if they found
that our prices are not competitive.
However, it is imperative to remind
them that the income of the coop
which they own will go to themselves,
and not to the pocket of a private
businessman.
•
PROMOTION – publicity and
gimmick are very important to keep the
members informed. This is not a
problem of the coop because we are
so lucky to have Zeny Kharroubi as a
member, who owns a newspaper. If she
charged the coop with its monthly
publicity, promotion, and monthly
advertisements, the coop could not
afford it.
In recent times, we have seen
the advent and proliferation of new
media which may include internet, viral
marketing, event marketing, sports
marketing, product placement, cell
phones, where viewers could skip
through commercials, where business
owners could increase cost-cutting
measures, and the public could reduce
television viewership.
We are aware that the Jewish
and the Chinese communities are very
successful in their businesses not
because of their numbers but because
of their close cooperation. It is sad to
note that the Filipino community, in
spite of its big population concentrated
in Cote des Neiges district, is still
struggling to build a very small
economic enterprise until now.
In the final analysis, we are
hoping that someday we could also
build a bigger business and provide a
much better service to the Filipino
people in Montreal.

The
Montreal
International
Women's Conference 2010 will bring
together women from around the world
under the theme "For a Militant Global
Women's Movement in the 21st Century"
Celebrating the Centennial of International
Women's Day.
The purpose of the conference is
to assess the achievements, shortcomings
and setbacks of the worldwide women's
rights movement during the last 100 years
by honouring the pioneers and celebrating
the centennial. We will draw up an action
plan for advancing this movement and our
activities will culminate with the formation of
an anti-imperialist women's alliance.
The central focus of the
conference will be Imperialist globalization:
the global financial and economic crisis,
War and Violence against women.
In the face of the worst economic
and financial crisis the world has known for
decades, with wars of agression raging
around the world, and violence against
women continuing unabated, it is time now
more than ever to unite our forces in a
movement that is in our image: communitybased, multi-racial and multi-cultural, with
an international perspective that opposes
war and all reaction, and seeks human
progress and social justice.
The event will take place August
13-16, 2010 and will bring together
delegates and participants from all regions
of the world, women workers and
intellectuals, farmers, youth, aboriginal
people, migrants, refugees, displaced
people and anti-imperialist activists. We will
hear from women who are active in
struggles for women's and human rights in
the Houses of Parliament and in the
Parliament of the Streets.

James Yap’s camp claims he
married Kris twice
Although his estranged wife Kris
Aquino claims their marriage is invalid,
James Yap's camp believes otherwise,
saying the rite was performed in “good
faith,” and not just once, but twice.
“You can make a mistake once but
in this situation there was a second time.
So to say that it was orchestrated by
James is not correct. The parties were
really in good faith,” said James' lawyer,
Lorna Kapunan, at a press conference
held Aug. 16.

Kris and James are said to have tied
the knot through a lady minister
identified in an online report as a Rayda
P. Tumaliuan of the Holy Sacrament
International Church. Tumaliuan is said
to have also officiated the second civil
ceremony two weeks later, on July 10,
2005.
The online report added the two had
to exchange vows for the second time
because James was unable to secure
parental consent during the first. Atty.
Kapunan said it’s prerequisite if the
marrying individual is between 21 to 25
years of age. James was 23 when he
wed Kris.
Just last Aug. 9, Kris filed a petition
for the Declaration of Nullity of Marriage
at the Makati Regional Trial Court Branch
140. The main ground for the repetition
is the “lack of authority of the
solemnizing officer,” as minister
Tumaliuan came from a religious sector
that the couple doesn’t belong to.
As stated in the Family Code, it
should be that “at least one of the
contracting parties belongs to the
solemnizing officer's church or religious
sect.” Kris and James are both Roman
Catholics.
The
cager’s
camp
refuted
speculations that he refuses to sign the
separation papers because he is after
Kris’ money.
“I asked him: ‘Are you here because
you want money from Kris?’ I think the
question itself is insulting,” Atty.
Kapunan said.
Truth is, as James admits, he still
loves his wife.
“Hindi
naman
basta-basta
nawawala ‘yong love, nandoon pa rin
‘yon eh. Di rin naman natin maipipilit
kung ayaw na sa ‘yo,” he related.
For now though, what James really
wants is to be able to see their son Baby
James. He, together with Atty. Kapunan,
filed on Monday the Motion for
Provisional Award of Visitation Rights at
the Makati RTC.
James’ camp decided to file the
motion after Kris allegedly prohibited the
PBA player from seeing Bimby while
their annulment case is ongoing. He
said the last time he saw Bimby was on
July 30, after he, half-brother Joshua
and mom Kris arrived from the US.
However, “hindi kami masyadong
nakapag-bonding dahil may jetlag siya.”
“After that (meeting), naka-receive
na ako ng text ni Kris na, 'Hindi mo muna
pwedeng makita si Baby James
hangga't hindi pa natatapos 'yong kaso
natin,'” related James.
He even tried to contact Bimby’s
yaya. “Akala ko baka nasa walang signal
lang so tinatawagan ko parati pero off na
'yong phone,” he said.
James requested the court via the
motion to be able to see his son twice a
week, as well as for Bimby to be allowed
to spend nights with him, and go with
him to his province, Negros Occidental,
where his parents live.
In a text message sent to ABS-CBN,
Kris is said to have been surprised that
James and his lawyer called for a
presscon even after she had already
allowed him to see their three-year old
boy.
“You know I texted James last night
around 7 pm complete with schedule of
when Bimby was okay this week
because I realized that our differences
shouldn’t affect Bimby adversely, and I
should be true to what I said in ‘[The]
Buzz.’ I didn’t hear back from him. That’s
the truth,” the actress’s message read.
James’ camp is aware of this.
“Although we are told by James that
he received text message from Kris
saying that she is open to a visitation, it
cannot be under her terms because you
cannot set a schedule, and a deadline,
and a venue. The father should be
allowed to freely visit a child,” maintained
Atty. Kapunan.
Apart from the separation, James
also does not agree with Kris’ petition of
having Bimby’s sole custody. But what
seemed to have hurt him more is her
request to drop Yap as Bimby’s surname.
“Gusto niyang ibahin ang pangalan
ni Baby James. Tanggalin niya ‘yung Yap
gusto niyang palitan ng Aquino. As a
father, talagang hindi puwede ‘yon.
Siyempre diba, anak ko ‘yon eh,” he
said.
Such petition poses a peril on
Bimby’s part, Atty. Kapunan said.
“He (James) will fight anything that is
filed to declare his son as illegitimate,
[because] that is the effect of the
petition.”
James’ camp said it's the last time
they will speak about the issue, and they
plead for Kris to do the same. a

Philippines' deadliest politically-linked
massacre are to call ex-president and
former ally Gloria Arroyo (pictured in

prosecutor said Saturday
Former President and now Rep.
Gloria Arroyo of Pampanga may still be
ordered to appear as witness on the
Maguindanao massacre case, even if
the defense panel has already dropped
her from the list of witnesses. This was
after one of the victims’ lawyers
disclosed that he is planning to make
the former president a hostile witness.
Lawyer Harry Roque, who
represents some of the victims’ families
wants Mrs. Arroyo to take the witness
stand and be a hostile witness. He said
that her testimony would be vital in
their case because of her supposed
association with the Ampa-tuan
political clan—the alleged brains of the
killing.
A “hostile witness” is a witness
who gives evidence against the party
calling him or her.
“We want Mrs. Arroyo to take the
witness stand as a hostile witness to
prove that the impunity of which the
crime took place was made possible
by the close relationship between the
accused and her,” Roque said during
the pre-trial proceeding held at Camp
Bagong Diwa, Bucitan Taguig City.
The former president has been
known to be close to the Ampatuans
as well as the Mangudadatus in the
Southern Philippines. Rumors also had
it that the Ampatuans played a big role
during the 2004 presidential election.
It was said that Arroyo’s rival, the
late actor Fernando Poe Jr. got no
votes in Maguindano.
The Ampatuans power further
widens when the former president
issued Executive Order 546, allowing
local chief executives to form auxiliary
forces. These auxiliary forces were
reportedly used by the Ampatuans in
the massacre, which killed 57 people
including 31 journalists.
Roque said he has already
informed Justice Secretary Leila de
Lima about the plan to make Mrs.
Arroyo as hostile witness.

cousin-in-law of former First Gentleman
Jose Miguel Arroyo.

Sunday at the Basilica di Santa
Prudenziana at via Urbana with the Sentro
Pilipino Chaplaincy.
"President Cory, we salute and thank
you for your love of country, for your pride
of being a Filipino, for your bold search for
the truth and living the truth. And as the
Holy Father aptly puts it, for your being 'a
woman of deep and unwavering faith,’"
Tuason said at the Mass.
She also recalled Pope Benedict XVI's
message extolling Mrs. Aquino for "her
courageous commitment to freedom of
the Filipino people, her rejection of
violence and intolerance, and her
contribution to the rebuilding of a just and
cohesive political order in her beloved
homeland."
Excerpts of Tuason’s remarks were
posted Sunday on the Department of
Foreign Affairs website.
The DFA also quoted basilica

citing the works undertaken by Mrs.
Aquino from 1986 until the last moments
of her life.
For their part, Filipinos who attended
the Mass also offered prayers for the

Gentleman and her late husband are

Ex-policeman hijacks bus in Manila
A dismissed policeman armed
with an automatic rifle has seized a
bus in Manila, the capital of the
Philippines, in a bid to demand his
reinstatement, police said.
Nine of the 25 hostages, including
three children, were subsequently
released, and appeared to be unhurt,
Jorge Carino, a journalist from ABSCBN, a Philippine TV-network, told Al
Jazeera.
Meanwhile, police sharpshooters
took positions around the bus, which
was parked near a downtown Manila
park, and negotiations to free the
hostages were under way, Alex
Gutierrez, deputy director of Manila
police, said.
The hostage-taker, identified as
Rolando Mendoza, a former senior
inspector armed with an M16 rifle and
small arms, was demanding that he be
given back his job on the police force,
Gutierrez said.
Negotiations
Two negotiators had approached
the bus and spoken to the gunman
who gave the negotiators a list of
demands, local television reported.
Mendoza asked for food for the
remaining 16 on the bus, which was
delivered, and fuel to keep the airconditioning going.
