The Chevrolet Camaro, introduced in 1966, was used as the Indianapolis 500 pace car and provided the perfect name for a new model from Heuer. Produced from the 1968 to 1972 the Camaro represents an unusual and fairly rare model, making this the ideal choice for those looking for something other than a Carrera. 5 Heuer. In these races, many of the greats such as Juan Manual Fangio honed their skills. Featuring a colour scheme reminiscent of the early 1970’s and shared with the Camaro of the same era, the Temporada uses the same Valjoux 7733 movement as the Autavias and Carreras from the same period. With its unusual case constructions utilising a plastic rear portion and metal bezel the movement can only be removed through the front of the watch. 6 Heuer. Many manufacturers have offered this complication in different fashions; Rolex with their Yachtmaster range and, more recently, Audemars Piguet with their pieces for Ernesto Bertarelli’s Team Alinghi. In November 1964 Aquastar received a Swiss patent for a “piece of horology allowing the counting of a restricted number of minutes” and in 1965 Heuer became the distributors for Aquastar watches which included a model called the Regate, featuring apertures in the dial that change colour as a 10 minute countdown take place. Around 1976 Heuer began producing their own model with the complication and much improved movement, followed by a complete redesign in 1983 featuring the Autavia style case shown here. Representing a novel and useful complication for those involved in competitive sailing, the Regatta is sure to attract attention at Le Port Hercule. 25 Heuer. Faced with the competition of the Japanese quartz revolution, the Heuer’s in-house calibres 11, 12, 14 and 15 were phased out and replaced with the Lemania 5100 movement. In 1984 Heuer introduced its first range powered by the Lemania movement, including two with the historic Carrera name on the dial. In 1985 the investor group sold Heuer to the Techniques D’Avant Garde (TAG) group ending the movement partnership making this one of the models with the shortest lifecycle. 27 Heuer. This Carrera shows the new dial from 1972 with the enlarged indexes and transitional hands. The dial has a starburst finish and shows the final evolution of the 1 to 12 marked hour sub-dial. Heuer had already developed the 'Monte Carlo' stopwatch, a legendary dashboard timepiece used for the 'Rally Monte Carlo' in the works Minis and Porsche 911's. He realised that "Monaco" would appeal to the elite market strongly appreciating the revolutionary chronograph. The Heuer Monaco, the world's first self-winding rectangular chronograph was introduced with simultaneous press conferences on the 3rd of March 1969 in Geneva and New York. Jack Heuer characterised this as the most important product launch during his career. The newly developed Cal.11 automatic movement used 17 jewels, an unbreakable mainspring, was antimagnetic, and had shock protection, but its most distinctive feature was the placement of the winding crown at the left side. A successful advertising campaign was highlighting that with an automatic chronograph the user would touch the crown only for time setting. 32 Heuer. A stainless steel automatic chronograph bracelet watch Autavia ‘Siffert’, Ref:1163 T, Case No.141341, Circa 1970 17-jewel Cal.11 automatic movement signed on the bridge Heuer, white dial with applied polished steel stepped baton hour markers and luminous dot tips, outer minute scale with blue baton markers at 5 minute intervals, dial signed Autavia Heuer Automatic Chronograph, polished steel baton hands with luminous inserts and blue chronograph hand, date aperture at 6, black subsidiary dials at 3 and 9 for 30 minute and 12 hour recording, brushed and polished tonneau stainless steel case with screw down back signed Heuer Leonidas inside, Heuer signed crown at 9 and fluted chronograph pushers at 2 and 4, fitted Heuer stainless steel link bracelet with folding clasp, case, dial and movement signed 42mm. €2,600 - 3,300 In 1968 Jo 'Seppi' Siffert won both 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring in a Porsche 907 firmly securing his place in motor racing history. His career was brought to a sudden and tragic end in 1971 when his BRM crashed at Brands Hatch, with Siffert unable to free himself, and caught fire. As one of the most collected models from the extensive Autavia range, the distinctive 1163 T features a calibre 11 movement, white dial, blue chronograph hand, tachymeter bezel, black subsidiary dials and blue accents to the dial. This example is an early, post Chronomatic version, apparent due to the case design, subdial 3-6-9-12 divisions on the hour subdial, the style of the applied hour markers and the untidy engraving of Heuer to the movement. 24 | Bonhams 33 Heuer. A stainless steel automatic chronograph wristwatch Monaco ‘Steve McQueen’, Ref:1133 B, Case No.161834, Circa 1970 17-jewel Cal.11 automatic movement, blue dial, printed circular white minute track and red 5 minute divisions, applied horizontal faceted polished steel hour markers with textured blocks at 2, 4, 8 and 10 and a vertical marker at 12, dial signed Monaco Heuer Automatic Chronograph, polished steel baton hands with luminous inserts and red tips, red chronograph hand, date aperture at 6, subsidiary dials at 3 and 9 for 30 minute and 12 hour recording, brushed square case with special snap down case back, Heuer signed crown at 9, fluted chronograph pushers at 2 and 4, fitted black leather strap, case, dial and movement signed 40mm. €4,800 - 6,000 The Monaco model with the reference 1133 B was worn by Steve Mcqueen in the famous racing film 'Le Mans'. The connection between McQueen and his Monaco had its origins in the relationship between McQueen and Jo Siffert. Jo Siffert, one of the most successful sports car racers of the time, was involved with the filming of the race scenes in 1970. Siffert arranged for other race car and famous endurance drivers, such as Derek Bell, Brian Redman, Rolf Stommelen, David Piper and others to participate too. For his Gulf Porsche 917 driving scenes, Steve McQueen wanted them to remain as true and original as possible and he insisted on wearing the same style of driving suit as Jo Siffert, with the large Heuer Chronograph logo on the front. The Heuer Monaco was just introduced with its cutting edge design and Steve McQueen decided to wear a Monaco in the film. Gerd Rüdiger Lang, who owns the watch making company Chronoswiss, was a time witness to these events and he himself started during the mid sixties as a young watchmaker at Heuer. He remembers bringing 20 Heuer wristwatches, some stopwatches, Heuer patches and stickers to Le Mans for filming just prior to the race in 1970. The Monaco's starring role on Steve McQueen's wrist helped create its legend, but it was the chronograph's radical look and its complete break with tradition, both inside and outside, that made it stand out. It had a fantastic presence during the film 'Le Mans' of more than 16 minutes. 34 Heuer. The Autavia and Heuer logos are now underneath 12 o’clock and the words Automatic Chronograph were printed on top of the date window to communicate well the new product invention. The crown is positioned on all Automatic Calibre 11 powered Heuer watches on the left side as there was no need for daily winding anymore. 39 Heuer. A stainless steel automatic chronograph bracelet watch Autavia, Ref:1163 V ‘Viceroy’, Case No.358987, Circa 1974 17-jewel Cal.12 automatic movement signed on the bridge Heuer, matt black dial with applied polished faceted baton hour markers and printed outer minute track with red lines at 5 minute increments, dial signed Autavia Heuer Automatic Chronograph, polished steel baton hands with red tips and luminous inserts, date aperture at 6, subsidiary dials at 3 and 9 for 30 minute and 12 hour recording, brushed and polished tonneau shaped stainless steel case with screw down back signed Heuer Leonidas inside and engraved ‘M1711’, fitted stainless steel Heuer link bracelet with folding clasp, case, dial and movement signed 42mm. €1,800 - 2,400 In 1972 Heuer launched a promotion with Viceroy cigarettes in which the public could buy an Autavia for $88, instead of the normal retail price of $200, when they sent in one end flap from a packet of Viceroy cigarettes. The model supplied featured the calibre 12 movement, black dial, red hands, white subsidiary dials and tachymeter bezel. The promotion was very popular so it ran from May to December in 1972. Parnelli Jones, winner of the 1963 Indy 500, was sponsored by both Heuer and Viceroy and can be seen in the advertisements for the promotion which were printed in Life Magazine, Popular Science, and Popular Mechanics. 26 | Bonhams 40 Heuer. Due to the small volume of pieces sold, examples are rare, making it an unusual alternative to the relatively common Calibre 11 Autavias. 41 Heuer. A stainless steel automatic chronograph wristwatch Carrera, Ref:1553 N, Case No.303712, Circa 1972 17-jewel Cal.15 automatic movement signed on the bridge Heuer, blue dial with silvered horizontal stripe running in to the subsidiary dial at 3, applied polished steel faceted baton hour markers, printed outer white minute track and raised black on white 500 to 60 tachymeter scale, white baton hands with luminous inserts and orange chronograph hand, dial signed Heuer Carrera Automatic Chronograph, date aperture at 6, subsidiary dials for 30 minute recording at 3 and running seconds at 10, brushed steel tonneau shaped case with screw down back signed Heuer Leonidas inside, polished plain bezel, Heuer signed crown at 9 and fluted chronograph pushers at 2 and 4, fitted black leather Rally strap and Heuer stainless steel buckle, case, dial and movement signed 38mm. €1,400 - 1,700 In 1972 a new Carrera model with reference 1553 N was added to the portfolio with the new Calibre 15 movement. The N stands for the dark blue dial with contrasting silver subdials. The Calibre 15 features a small permanent second at 10 o'clock whilst the hours sub-register has been omitted. This led to an asymmetric new dial design and with this example reflected the Martini Racing colours. The Caliber 15 Carrera did not achieve substantial volumes therefore pieces with this stunning and creative dial are seldom offered on the collectors' market. 42 Heuer. A stainless steel automatic chronograph bracelet watch Silverstone, Ref:110313 F, Case No.307196, Circa 1974 17-jewel Cal.12 automatic movement signed on the bridge Heuer, brown ‘fumeburst’ dial with block hour markers on raised outer minute divisions, white baton hands with luminous inserts and white chronograph hand, date aperture at 6, subsidiary dials at 3 and 9 for 30 minute and 12 hour recording, brushed and polished shaped stainless steel case with screw down back signed Heuer Leonidas inside, Heuer signed crown at 9 with fluted chronograph pushers at 2 and 4, fitted stainless steel Heuer link bracelet with folding Heuer clasp, case, dial and movement signed 42mm. €2,400 - 3,000 The brown Silverstone appeared first in the 1974 Heuer catalogue and the dial has an amazing starburst finish continuing to the outer tension ring. The indices and hands have a beautiful matching patina adding additional charm to the light reactive dial. 28 | Bonhams 43 Heuer. A stainless steel automatic chronograph bracelet watch Silverstone, Ref:110313 B, Case No.309216, Circa 1974 17-jewel Cal.12 automatic movement signed on the bridge Heuer, blue dial, block hour markers on raised outer minute divisions, white baton hands with luminous inserts and white chronograph hand, date aperture at 6, subsidiary dials at 3 and 9 for 30 minute and 12 hour recording, brushed and polished shaped stainless steel case with screw down back signed Heuer Leonidas inside, Heuer signed crown at 9 with fluted chronograph pushers at 2 and 4, fitted stainless steel Heuer link bracelet with folding Heuer clasp, case, dial and movement signed 42mm. €2,600 - 3,300 The Silverstone was meant to be an iconic design successor for the square shaped Monaco and a blue dial edition first appeared in the 1974 Heuer catalogue worn by Clay Regazzoni while sitting in the Ferrari 312 T Formula 1 car. The blue dial Silverstone consequently became called the 'Regazzoni' by collectors and is very much sought after. The product life cycle of the Silverstone was rather short and after three years production ceased, it was last shown in the 1977 catalogue. The blue Silverstone offered here is with its original Heuer signed bracelet; exactly the same specification as worn by Clay Regazzoni. TAG Heuer reissued the blue and brown dial Silverstones to celebrate their 150th Anniversary in 2010. 44 Heuer. A stainless steel automatic chronograph watch Calculator, Ref:110633, Circa 1972 17-jewel Cal.12 automatic movement signed on the bridge Heuer, dark blue dial, applied polished baton hour markers with luminous inserts, white printed outer minute divisions, dial signed Heuer Calculator Automatic Chronograph, baton hands with luminous inserts and white tips, white centre chronograph hand with luminous block towards the tip, date aperture at 6, subsidiary dials at 3 and 9 for 30 minute with white accents and 12 hour recording, brushed and polished stainless steel oversized case with large rotating bezel marked for calculations, screw down case back signed Heuer Leonidas inside, signed crown at 9 and twin fluted chronograph buttons at 2 and 4, case, dial and movement signed 45mm. €1,200 - 1,800 Before the arrival of the integrated circuit and the computer, the slide rule represented quite the pinnacle of technology. Allowing the user to perform complex calculations quickly and being able to use one was quite a skill; for working out anything from the service to pay at a restaurant to the amount of fuel and range remaining for an aircraft. Although Brietling were probably the most well known for producing slide rule equipped watches, the Calculator joined the Heuer range in 1972 and was powered by both the calibre 12 and 15 movements during its production run. 47 Heuer. Adorning the dashboards of everything from the works Mini Coopers to Porsche 911s, they eventually found their way into military aircrafts, including the RN and RAF VTOL Harrier. The Master Time and Monte Carlo featured here are ex-British Military items, clear from the case markings and the black finish to the cases and mounting plates. 30 | Bonhams Designed to be fitted to a boat dashboard, the Navia features a waterproof type case to protect the internals from nautical environments. The movement is the same as fitted to the Master-Time, the 15-jewel 8 day Arogno Cal.28 and the piece would make a fitting addition to the dashboard of a Riva Aquarama or other classic wooden hulled speedboat. 48 Hanhart. A rare and unusual timing board with two single button stopwatches Ferrari-Duostop, Circa 1960 Metallic light blue coated aluminium board, fitted with two Hanhart single button stopwatches, German made, each with white dial, red Arabic numerals, outer 1/10th second track, blued steel hands, subsidiary dial at 12 with red racing style outer divisions for 15 minute recording, dial signed, held in sprung clips with chromed security caps, activated by a single lever mechanism on the right of the board with lock for transport and storage, fitted pen clip, brown leather neck strap and timing sheet clips, black placque to the top left corner signed FerrariDuostop, together with later Hanhart ‘Robotimer’ box and a selection of liturature 40.5 x 32cm €3,600 - 6,000 In the days before the prancing horse adorned everything from pens to fragrances to childrens toys and all in between, The Hanhart FerrariDuostop represented a rare, early instance of Ferrari putting their brand on something other than a car. During the late 1950's and 1960's Hanhart produced a number of timing devices for the factory Ferrari team, including the Addi-Stop, Duostop, Two-Stop and Tri-Stop which were neck worn devices to aid lap timing. Although all models of Hanhart Ferraris are rare in their own right, the clipboard featured here is especially so with very little information available on other examples. With its original leather neck strap and the movements having recently been serviced, this lot is ideal for the Ferrari collector who has everything and could see great use in regularity events or on the pit wall at Goodwood Revival.
