Hardanger is one of the timeless embroidery techniques, originally from
Norway. It is almost a rite of passage to complete a piece of Hardanger
as it is recognised all over the world. Christine’s exquisitely stitched

weaving with picots. Christine has undertaken the pre-class preparation
for you. Colours: Cream threads are used on your choice of blue, green,
natural OR silver/mauve linen. Size: 10.5cm x 21cm.
Catherine has captured the gorgeous blush of a late English summer
evening in this enchanting embroidery. In this class you’ll learn all the
techniques Catherine used to create this piece, but in a smaller version.
A wonderful class in creative embroidery as you employ reverse needle
felting, textural thread stitching, silk ribbon embroidery, beaded wire
techniques and other hand techniques, to recreate the lifelike blue
heathland butteries, the grasses, heather and other summer owers.
SKILL LEVEL: Suitable for intermediate to experienced embroiderers but not

Elena Dickson
Delma has been embroidering for over 35 years and has spent the last 20 years specializing in Brazilian
style dimensional embroidery. She is the author of a book on the subject and has produced over 90 original
designs, all of which are available as prints and kits through her extensive mail order service under her
business name “Blackberry Lane”. Delma conducts classes at various craft shops, embroidery guilds and craft
conventions around Australia and overseas.
www.blackberrylane.com.au
Elena’s main interest is lace and she has published three books in this field: Knotted Lace in the Eastern
Mediterranean Tradition, Mediterranean Knotted Lace and Bibilla: Knotted Lace Flowers. Elena has been
involved in her own Craft business, “Elena’s Knotted Lace”, for over 20 years. She has been a member of the
South Australian Branch of the Australian Lace Guild since 1987, and has been teaching Knotted or Armenian
lace since 1985. Since 1992 Elena has been teaching workshops for the Embroiderers’ Guild, Lace Guild and
Doll and Miniature groups in South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland. She has also conducted
numerous private classes and workshops in Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, as well as classes in
the U.S. cities of Seattle, Portland, Ithaca, New York and St Paul, Minnesota.
ED1 Greek Finger Lace Bracelet
This original design by Delma, features a realistic arrangement of
Australian Wildflowers. Stitched in a variety of Brazilian Rayon Threads,
the floral spray of Waratahs, Banksia, Silky Oak, Prickly Tea Tree and
Red Gum Blossoms is rich and vibrant in colour. You may choose to
concentrate on a smaller section of the design or stitch the full piece in all
its glorious detail, including an embroidered buzzing bee, hovering over
the flowers. When mounted, using a black velvet mat, this is a stunning
embroidered picture. Size: 20cm x 9.5cm.
SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate.
This is a beginners’ techniques class in which Elena will teach you the
art of Greek finger lace, which can be used to create decorative fringes,
lace edgings and even bracelets and belts. During the class you will
make a bookmark which will demonstrate how to attach threads to
fabric or thread and how to knot threads onto an anchor thread. You’ll
work a variety of decorative knotting techniques including square knots,
collecting knots, woven technique and the Sfakia knot which is unique
to the Cretan Village of Sfakia. Then you’ll progress to make a decorative
finger lace bracelet.

Delma Moore
SKILL LEVEL: Beginners.
This elegant design by Delma is a good introduction to Brazilian
Dimensional Embroidery. Learn how to handle the vibrant rayon threads
integral to this style of embroidery, whilst using a wide range of stitches to
capture the elegance of these stylized flowers. Stitches include alternating
satin stitch, Brazilian stem stitch, fly stitch, long and short satin stitch,
bullion knot, cast-on stitch, double cast-on stitch, feather stitch, French
knot. Size: 14cm x 13.5cm design.
Knotted Lace
Elena has devised a range of samplers to teach you how to work,
including basic loops, large loops, bridging loops, joining in a new
thread, large and small turning loops, large and small picots, working
on a straight edge and working on a round edging. On the second day,
you will revise the techniques learnt from day one before learning closed
loops and bows and how to work around a square. The aim is for you to
learn techniques which will enable you to work any of the patterns in
books and to help you decipher patterns from pictures and pieces of lace.
SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate.
SKILL LEVEL: Beginners.
DM2b Sturt’s Desert Pea and
Geraldton Wax
Another original design from Delma, this one showcasing the unique
beauty of Australian native flowers. The rayon and silk threads brilliantly
capture the vibrant red of Sturt’s Desert Pea, in contrast to the soft pink
flowers and leaves of the Geraldton Wax. A striking design of the South
Australian floral emblem, with dimensional layering of the red flowers to
give depth to the work. The design is stitched with surface embroidery on
cream trigger cloth using alternating satin stitch, satin stitch, stem stitch
and pistil stitch. Size: 9cm x 8.5cm.
ED2b Bibilla Flowers
Elena will teach beginners the traditional techniques used to work the
delicate Bibilla flower — petals, flowers, leaves and buds as well as how
to assemble them together. The flowers are a lovely addition to the edges
of a soft summer shawl.

I have been embroidering since childhood, learning from my mother and grandmother. As a career I chose
teaching, qualifying as a secondary school textiles teacher from Larnook Teachers’ College and Emily
McPherson College in 1968 and I continued to teach textiles for 20 odd years in the Victorian state school
system. Since retirement, I have been teaching casual classes in various embroidery techniques to adults. I
have undertaken many classes to continually enhance my skills and I love to impart this knowledge to others.
I love working in soft muted colours using a combination of ribbon, thread and lace to build a story. I am an
avid bear maker and use my embroidery skills to enhance my bears. I encourage students to put their own
stamp on a project.
I am a fibre and textile artist. My genre is surface stitchery, including stump work, felting, gold and metal thread
work. My designs depict Australian Flora and the Australian Outback. Through teaching I can share my love of the
stitch with students, showing them how to combine fibre and threads with simple stitches to create amazing pieces
of embroidery. I am a member and qualified Tutor of The Embroiderers Guild NSW. I have exhibited in a number of
galleries, held 2 exhibitions in Grafton’s Regional Gallery and at the NSW Embroiderers Guild. I teach locally, around
NSW with the Guild, and at a major embroidery conference in Brisbane. My awards include Champion embroidery
exhibit at the Queensland Agricultural Show (EKKA) 3 years in a row and various other awards at the EKKA and
around the Clarence Valley. www.janpilgrimofjanetsdesigns.com

Kerry’s business, Bead Shack, has been operating for 10 years and for about 8 of those years, Kerry has regularly
attended major craft shows around Australia and has extended more recently, to include New Zealand. Kerry
loves to teach the technical side of the stitches, and then allow the maker to add their own touch of colour
and design to the skills they have learned. She loves helping people to discover the amazing world of needle
and thread style bead weaving. Kerry holds Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment, which gives
her a good background in working with both adults and children. Kerry and her team love to create off-loom
woven designs - this style of beading is fairly uncommon with most bead shops, and offers hours and hours of
relaxation - far more so than conventional bead stringing. www.beadshack.com.au

Jenny has always had a passion for creating beautiful things; whether it be drawing, painting, stitching or
sewing. As a self-taught artist Jenny learnt the basic methods of her craft through her father, an avid painter
and embroiderer. Her work is predominantly influenced by nature as she creates her artistic reflections of
many different animals. Jenny specializes in embroidered portraits that not only capture a physical likeness,
but the essence of each creature’s spirit and personality. Jenny regularly teaches her craft at national and
international needlework conventions, Embroidery Guilds and private groups. She has published two books
— Thread Painting, Bunnies in My Garden and The Redwork Circus.

MDS1 A Lamb in Possum
Clothing
If you have ever wanted to learn how to work a design on a blank piece
of fabric, this counted cross stitch project is for you. These charming
Christmas stockings from Shepherd’s Bush will delight children and adults
alike. Gorgeous for baby’s first Christmas or for any age, they’re sure to
remain a much loved family Christmas treasure and a fond memory of the
maker. A choice of two designs is available in the class, but Marguerite
will have many more designs available for sale if you would like to stitch
one after the cruise. Size: 24cm x 18cm.
SKILL LEVEL: Beginners – intermediate.
This is an original design by Melissa. Wrap your little lamb in this cosy,
warm-as-toast merino baby bunting. This bunting is designed so that it
can be sewn at the bottom—so it’s part sleeping sack, part garment.
Want easier bubby access for changes and car capsules? Just don’t sew
up the bottom seam and let those cute lamby legs kick free. The project
requires working on different types of skills, including pickup up stitches,
shaping, and finishing for a truly beautiful gift. Size: Newborn.
SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate. Requires beginner level skills (ability to knit,
purl, cast on and cast off) plus increase, decrease, and follow simple
stitch patterns.

MDS2a Minestrone Socks
Marguerite stitched this adult’s knee rug for her sister Bridie, who lives
in England, in memory of happy times together hunting for blackberries
in the hedgerows. It’s an adaption of Carolyn Pearce’s original design in
The World’s Most Beautiful Embroidered Blankets (Country Bumpkin).
A variety of wool, silk and cotton threads and beading are used to
achieve gorgeously textured and dimensional flowers and berries.
Colours: Cream, baby pink, pale green, pale blue and mauve blanketing.
Size: 130cm x 80cm.
If you’ve never knitted socks before and been daunted by the thought of
it, then the Minestrone Socks project is designed to give you a great start
on the art of sock knitting. Experienced knitters will enjoy improving their
knitting skills and techniques. The project is designed to make the most of
traditionally hand-painted sock yarn. This workshop features a top-down
sock construction, the basics of how to use charts, and the anatomy of
hand-knitted socks.
SKILL LEVEL: Comfort when working with double-pointed needles is a plus.
Basic knowledge of circular knitting and knitting and purling are required.
SKILL LEVEL: Beginners – intermediate.
MW2b Heart of Roses Cushion
The heart garland features swathes of wild roses. Based on a Carolyn
Pearce design (Inspirations Bridal 2002), it was adapted by Marguerite and
stitched in ivory satin as the ring cushion for her daughter’s wedding and
included the bride and groom’s initials. Also suitable as a bed cushion
with or without initials. You are welcome to use your own fabric.
Colours: Cream/Ivory Satin with peach, lavender or pink silk ribbons.
Size: 30cm cushion.

In this class you will learn casting on, shawl tension, basic eyelet stitches,
reading and using lace charts. A great foundation for lace shawl knitting.

Marguerite is passionate about sewing in addition to bridge and cooking! Her love of sewing was nurtured
in her early years of high school and it has thrived ever since. For nearly twenty years, Marguerite has been
teaching embroidery to children and adults in many techniques, but particularly surface stitchery and her alltime favourite, counted cross stitch. Some stitchers find counted cross stitch difficult, but for Marguerite there’s a
rhythm to the stitching that she especially enjoys, along with the pleasure of seeing the design emerge from the
blank canvas of the linen. It’s something she never tires of. She always has a piece she is working on, along with
other embroidery. Marguerite is also the owner of The Embroidery Den, a very well-known and well stocked
embroidery shop in suburban Melbourne.

Rachel has been creating felt for over 25 years. She enjoys the whole process of feltmaking, selecting fibres,
fabrics, colours and textures and transforming these by the addition of heat, agitation and pressure into
many different felt art forms. Felt is such a wonderful medium; it can be smooth or textural, thick or thin,
manipulated or moulded, wall art or wearable. Rachel was co-editor of Felt magazine for 18 months and
ran a fibre dyeing business for ten years, supplying outlets in Australia, England and the USA. She now sells
through her Etsy online shop called Euci. She enjoys sharing her knowledge by teaching workshops in Art
Galleries, schools, TAFE, forums and to private groups throughout Australia and New Zealand. Her classes are
relaxed and students are guided and encouraged to create individual pieces. www.rachelmeekfelt.com
RM1 Ripple Scarf and Island Scarf
Based on the appearance of Moroccan wall tiles, the combination of
stitches used in this motif and the method of joining combine together to
create an unusual three dimensional effect, so much more interesting than
a traditional granny square. Learn how to tuck away all the tail ends when
changing colours, and see how easily a small amount of surface stitching
makes the motifs look as neat on the wrong side as the right.
Colours: 100% alpaca fair trade in ‘brights’ or ‘naturals’.
Size: 15cm x 150cm scarf or start a knee rug or blanket.
SKILL LEVEL: Basic crochet skills.
Two gorgeous silk scarves using masking tape as a resist. In your first scarf
you’ll achieve a wonderful rippling effect, a lovely drape and an interesting
texture. With your second scarf you’ll achieve amazing little islands of felt
in a grid pattern of your choice. A unique scarf which drapes beautifully.
Colours: Cool (purple scarf/variegated blue wool), Warm (deep red scarf –
orange/pink wool), Tonal (black scarf – grey/white wool), Rainbow (black
scarf – red/blue/pink wool). Size: Two scarves 180cm x 45cm before felting.

PM2a Fabulous Freeform
Fabrics
RM2a Mosaic Scarf and Dot Scarf
Many say that some of Prudence’s freeform fabrics remind them of a Gustav
Klimt painting. Knitting easily lends itself to straight-ish pieces whilst
crochet works well for circular motifs; both shapes that Klimt used when
painting his complex fabrics. He generally used squares and rectangles for
the males’ garments and circles for the females’ gowns. In this workshop
you will combine both together and discover how easy it is to artistically
mix a wide range of lightly-textured yarns and toning colours to create
softly blended fabrics. Size: Commence creating anything from a cushion
cover to a small artwork , a wearable-art wrap or jacket.
Two beautiful scarves made in a choice of colours. Students will learn how
to make pre-felt from wool fibre, then cut out shapes and place them onto
tissue silk scarves. Because the wool shrinks, the spaces between the shapes
become ruched and the edges frilled. The texture and ‘shadows’ of colour
on the back of the scarf are as delightful as the wool side! Colours: Autumn
(orange scarf/ variegated pink, orange, mustard wool), Spring (purple scarf/
variegated blue, green wool) and Winter (charcoal scarf/ grey, white, red
wool). Size: Two scarves 38cm x 180cm before felting.
SKILL LEVEL: Basic knitting and crochet skills.

Prudence is an internationally renowned textile artist and author whose medium is freeform knitting and
crochet. Having knitted for as long as she can remember, but as a response to repetitive strain, she started her
freeform methods over 20 years ago, combining crochet with her knitting to enable her to use a wider range
of hand movements. Prudence has written a number of books on her techniques, has been the featured artist
at craft events in every capital city in Australia, in New Zealand and Denmark. She has taught and lectured
around Australia, and in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Denmark, the USA, Canada, Malaysia, Singapore,

Robyn Alexander
Robert’s creative needlepoint is full of colour, texture and life. He combines traditional embroidery stitches
with his own original freestyle stitches, then adding paints, beads, metallic threads and other embellishments,
he demonstrates how traditional rules can be broken to great effect. Robert’s work challenges the embroiderer
to be daring, creative and spontaneous in creating the look of lace, fur, flesh, the folds of a gown, a crystal
bowl of fruit, movement, light and shade. Robert’s book, Creative Needlepoint, was published in 1992,
showcasing his work and charting his development as an artist. A retired solicitor, Robert teaches at a range
of venues in Melbourne and his classes are full of friendship, laughter and the joy and freedom of creative
stitching. His only rule is to explore, experiment and finish the work!
Robyn hand dyes silk embroidery threads, ribbons, fabrics, wool and creates embroidery designs in her garden
studio. As an embroiderer of many years, Robyn appreciates the style and flair that unusual threads can add
to your work. Adding to this she has sourced interesting embellishments from her travels around the world.
Her greatest textile passions are colour and texture. Robyn enjoys teaching workshops, passing on her passion
and knowledge while meeting great people. She calls it “the great exchange” as we learn from each other. Her
business, Colour Streams, established in 1995, supplies variegated or overdyed colours of silk embroidery thread
and silk embroidery ribbons, as well as hand dyed velvet, Habatai silk, crinkle silk chiffon, silk organza and pure

handpainted silk pareos, scarves, shawls and fabrics and am developing a range of kaftans and kimonos. My
favourite things come together on this cruise - the South Pacific, silk painting and life at sea. I enjoy tutoring
