PRESENTATION OF UNIVERSIDADE CATÓLICA PORTUGUESA
HISTORY
The Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP) was created in 1967 through the foundation of the Faculdade de Filosofia
(Braga). In 1968, opened its head office in Lisbon, and was recognized by the Government in 1971.
It is the first portuguese university that was not established by the Government, but by the Catholic Church, under the
Concordat of 1940 between the Portuguese Government and the Holy See. Since then, it has provided a significant
contribution to the development of Portuguese higher education. The diploma of legislative framework from UCP –
Decreto-Lei nº 128/90 – published in 1990, recognized it as such.
The new Concordat of 2004 states, in art.º 21º, the «institutional specificity» of Universidade Católica Portuguesa.
