forests in the Mae Soi valley of
Northern Thailand is all too tragically
commonplace. Destruction of the
upland forests has created a thorny
desert, silted up rivers and reduced the
crops. The difference in the Mae Soi
valley is that the people have begun
to reverse the process – in the face of
many obstacles. In a crusading monk
they have found guidance and a way to
cut through bureaucratic barriers; in a
lady of royal blood they found financial
and organisational support. Together,
the alliance is saving the forest and the
people – and providing a model for the
Third World.

On March 19th 2002, a devout Catholic
knelt in her backyard shrine. As she
contemplated the serene face of the
Madonna, she noticed two shiny streaks
roll down her cheek. The weeping
Madonna of Rockingham is one of
many bizarre and unexplained cases
of crying statues. A tiny Madonna in
Civitavecchia, near Rome, wept tears
of blood in 1995 and a plaster plaque
of Our Lady in Syracuse, Sicily wept
human tears in 1953. Weeping Women
provides a window into this world of
religious phenomena by telling the
stories of those affected – a sceptic,
a statue’s owner, the seriously ill, and
devoted believers seeking guidance.

On a spring night, a
spawning of coral takes

Barrier Reef off the northeastern coast of Australia.
The reef plays host to the

limited resources have led
to a constant struggle for
many of the sea creatures

and even relationships with

notions of motherhood,

are being questioned, with
evidence showing that
even females presumed
to be monogamous mate
with more than one male
during their reproductive
cycle. Only recently have
scientists observed the

competing male’s sperm.

Sanctuary – an Australian

sanctuary is establishing
the animals’ breeding

In the vast salt lakes of the Australian inland, banded Stilts breed. Here billions of tiny shrimps

The invasion of cane toads into
Australia’s Northern Territory’s legendary
Top End is having a devastating impact
on goannas. Cane toads, originally from
South America, have hopped steadily
into the rich habitats of Arnhem Land
and Kakadu National Park. They are
extremely poisonous and kill almost
anything that attempts to eat them –
including goannas. While scientists
struggle to understand the true impact
of these foreign invaders and an
effective genetic control is at least a
decade away, wet season floodwaters
are carrying the cane toads ever deeper
into previously pristine wilderness areas.
All is not peace and love in Frog’s Hollow.
Two years ago, a guest to this Buddhist
commune accidentally killed a scrub
turkey. This was not only illegal but very
foolish. The small and reasonably wellbehaved population of turkeys retaliated.
Their numbers grew, their behaviour
became aggressive and their intentions
became clear – to make life a misery for
every two legged mammal they could
find. The community, inspired by their
Buddhist teachings, are now responding
with their own plans for karmic
redemption. It’s animals vs people,
nature vs civilisation, Darwin vs Buddha
– and so far, the turkeys are winning.

Frogs have survived for 175 million
years. They’ve outlived the dinosaurs
but, for the magnificent jewel-like
Green and Golden Bell Frog, the
future was not bright. Threatened by a
fungus that feeds off the keratin in its
skin, there were just a few remaining
pockets left when scientists made
their vital breakthrough. But, before
this endangered amphibian would get
its “lifeline”, a good deal of political
muscle was required to facilitate the
construction of specially built frog
ponds, corridors and hotels in the
heart of a growing city – in one case
causing a re-think to work on the
Sydney 2000 Olympics site.

Drinking – it’s a social activity and one that’s widely
accepted globally. It’s not surprising then, that many of
us continue to drink knowing it can be destructive. But is
the desire to drink genetic or learned? Is there a point of
no return once the liver has been damaged by alcohol?
Does moderate drinking really harm us or is it just a myth?
Perhaps a little bit of alcohol might actually be good for us.
Two thirds of 20 year olds and one in eight adults have
used marijuana and for more than half a century it’s been
tagged a dangerous drug. Marijuana users have long
claimed that it’s harmless but nonetheless the authorities
continue the ban on its cultivation and usage. They claim
that it’s carcinogenic and brain-damaging. Science has
established that the truth lies somewhere in-between the
claims of both groups.
Caffeine – Everyone’s Drug
Everyday the world consumes the equivalent of one caffeine
drink per person. Caffeine is the most commonly used drug
around the world and is such a part of everyday life we don’t
even see it as a drug. However research shows that some
of the effects of caffeine are similar to those experienced
after taking hard drugs. But there’s also a positive side.
Caffeine has been shown to have measurable benefits in the
treatment of the elderly and premature babies.
Nicotine – The Desirable Drug
What is it about nicotine that makes it so compelling and
difficult to give up? Smoking might be much maligned,
rejected by advertisers, frowned upon in public places,
almost socially unacceptable and definitely on the way
out if the masses have their way, despite all of this, there
are those who see a positive side to nicotine. In fact it
appears there are sound scientific reasons why smokers
believe cigarettes help them cope with everyday life.
Ecstasy – The Party Drug
Around the world headlines have screamed out the dire
consequences of taking the designer drug ecstasy. Lives have
been lost but that doesn’t stop many from continuing to take
it. We go behind the scenes of the rave scene and examine
the hype the drug attracts. The results will surprise, as many
continue to argue that the effects of ecstasy are far less
devastating than some legal drugs like nicotine and alcohol.

Is It So? series, which aired between 1963 and
1986, brought the genre an element that had not
