Major Items for this sale are:
• A rare and unique set of the 2nd edition of Sir Walter Lawry Buller’s A History of the Birds of New Zealand together with the
Supplements, in their original grey printed wrappers as published and with the original book boxes. Provenance by family descent
to Tony Keulemans, great, great grandson of the artist John Gerrard Keulemans.
• John French Angas – The New Zealanders Illustrated [1847] bound into an important highly decorative arts and crafts full
morocco, elaborately tooled binding.
• A superb photograph album by Thomas Andrew in its original tapa cloth binding titled ‘Samoa’ circa 1900.
• Early Francois Valentyn engravings showing the first images of New Zealand and the New Zealanders [1726].
• Early maps and engravings
• Collection of children’s books including one inscribed and signed by Roald Dahl.
Also of importance are a selection of first edition New Zealand and Regional histories, early and historic New Zealand
photographs and documents; Central Otago gold mining documents, papers and maps; Angling books and a large collection of
autographs and postcards;
My final sale for the year will be held in late November. This sale includes Books from two important South Island Libraries featuring

3AUTOGRAPH ALBUM
The Beatles and Rolling Stones. [1960’s]
An autograph album dating from New Zealand concerts in the 1960’s
containing what is believed to be the signatures of the Beatles,
Paul McCartney, George Harrison, John Lennon and Ringo Star, the
signatures are written in a black fibre type pen. Also signatures of
Rolling Stones members, Bill Wyman, Keith Richardson, Brian Jones
and Charlie Watts. It also contains various other signatiures including
Roy Orbison, Dinah Lee, Bobby Vee and others, these are all written in
blue ball point.
The vendor says the signatures were obtained by the father of the
young woman who made up the album. He worked in lighting and
sound at the theatre where the artists appeared in Christchurch, New
Zealand in the 1960’s. These autographs have not been authenticated.

stars, and skating stars the majority with real signatures they include
two of Dame Margot Fonteyn, both signed; Robert Helpmann,
Australian dancer, choreographer, director and actor; Alicia Markova,
Britains first ballarine; Svetlana Berisova, British born prima ballarina
who danced for more than 20 years; Violetta Elvin, Soviet ballarina
who danced for Sadler’s Wells; Elaine Fifield, first Australian to become
a ballarina of Sadler’s Wells; Mona Inglesby , director of International
Ballet; Margaret Hill, British Ballarina, who was principal dancer with

A superb album containing 240 Victorian cards, mostly Christmas,
Birthday and New Years cards many with small children, some
featuring animals in human poses [eg monkeys steeple chasing]
clowns and others, some appear to be in sets, decorative Continental
valentine cards.
The cards date from the late 19th century to ca 1910. All are glued
into an album with decorative Victorian scraps and heraldic emblems
decorating the pages. The album is clean and all the cards are VG with
bright crisp colours.

The album is dated 1850. At the back of the album is a mounted
Baxter print blind stamped on the mount with G.E. Baxter patent and
titled Australia ‘News from Home’.
The remainder of the album includes original botanical watercolours
and pencil sketches; poems in copperplate hand writing; graphite
sketches of country and architectural scenes, copper engravings.
It is bound into a beautiful black lacquer boards with decorative
chinoiserie work, leather spine and a glazed botanical engraving on
the front of the album.

Some spotting on the plates, one or two light tide marks, smudging
on fore edges. Old professional restorations to margins of several
pages, text opposite plate VII torn with repair, loss to the last 3 lines.
An important early New Zealand binding in full dark green morocco
elaborately tooled with cross hatched fleur de lis motif in red and with
a decorative gilt border. The spine, with the original title labels is gilt
panelled with the biblical quotation from Genesis “After their families,
After their Tongues, In their Lands...” which appears on the title page.
Marbled fore and endpapers with gilt stamped fleur de lis borders. All
edges gilt.
The binding is believed to have been especially commissioned and
executed in New Zealand.
Loosely enclosed a letter signed by R. Coupland Harding
[ New Zealand pioneer, printer and publisher] regarding the book coming
up for sale at Bethunes in 1906 and advising the recipient. “It is a grand
folio ... and the book was specially bound for an industrial exhibition in
Wellington, the binding is exceptionally good”. Also the original purchase
invoice from J.H. Bethune and Co 22nd May 1906 for 21 pounds.

Baker was Head of Missions in Tonga and Prime Minister. A
disagreement arose with the Wesleyan authorities in 1879 and Baker
established an independent body ‘Free Church of Tonga. Some of the
natives were loyal to the old church and strong feeling was aroused
which resulted in an attempt to shoot Baker in 1887. He survived and
died in 1903.

issued in 13 parts, in their original grey printed wrappers. Housed in
the original green gilt cloth book box.
The first of the 13 pts of the 2nd ed was available in June 1887
although most of the 900 subscribers appear to have preferred to
receive the complete works in bound sets hence the rarity of this set.
Supplement to the Birds of New Zealand 1906
2 volumes as published in grey printed wrappers, with 12 hand
coloured plates by J.G. Keulemans. Housed in the original green H/C,
gilt panelled book boxes.
The colour of the plates and text in both sets are in fine original
condition, many pages of text largely unopened.
A unique combination, the 2nd edition and the Supplements are
extremely rare unbound in their original parts. Their appear to be no
previous recorded sales at auction.

mounts, plate 6 &7, light creases and faded. In the original orange
folder complete but worn with soiling. Lacks the the Index to the First
series.
Moore-Jones exhibited his works in London including a private
showing to the Royal Family. This portfolio of his prints was published
in 1916 and an exhibition of his works toured NZ in 1917 to raise
funds for the RSA. The NZ Government turned down the opportunity
to purchase the collection which was later purchased by Australia for
the Austraian War Memoria

the seal of the ‘Komitinui o Rotorua’ that I promised. I rediscovered it
recently among my papers. Apparently it relates to the decision of the
‘Komiti’ regarding the title to some block of land - Te Haka 5. Werahiko
Pera is the lucky owner and he is informed at the bottom of page to
“Never sell but hold the land for ever and ever”...’ the letter is signed H.
Hamilton.
Together with the document on blue paper which is written in Maori
with the seal, dated 1879.

A small early 19th century leatherbound note book, inside the front
cover a label reading “Formulary of Dr John Parker, who landed in
Akaroa 12 years before the first 4 ships”, the inscription has been
typed onto the chemistry label of E.J. Thompson, M.P.S. Chemist,
Stafford street, Timaru. Phone 1327. The notebook is 9 x 11.5cms, is

John Parker emigrated to N.Z. with his wife [ Sarah Hannah Pavitt]
their two sons and almost the entire Pavitt family, they sailed on
the Monarch and landed in Akaroa on the 2nd April 1850 He at first
described himself as a chemist and later practised as a medical doctor,
he does not seem to have enjoyed great popularity in his profession,
and it maybe he called himself Doctor to obtain registration as the
law said if you had been practising prior to 1857 it entitled you to
automatic registration. He moved to Christchurch in 1862 where he
opened Parker’s Hotel [later to become Zetland Hotel], He died at
his home in 1882 at the age of 66 having suffered from asthma and
dropsy, he had been treating himself.

and was a good friend of Sir George Grey. His poem The Old Land and
the New was set to music and performed by George Snazelle who
was popularly known as ‘snazzy’ inspired by his smart dressing and
personality the adjective snazzy’ was seen in print for the first time in
the world in NZ’s Evening Post in 1901.

‘Following the suppression of ‘Oriflamme,’ membership dwindled at
the Caxton Club Press. The remaining members had to agree to a
number of conditions outlined by the
College Council in order to have the suppression lifted, one of those
conditions meant that the title ‘Oriflamme’ could not be used for any
future publications. Ian Milner suggested the name ‘Sirocco’, meaning
a hot wind, suggesting that Glover and Milneer were not entirely
repentant. Produced in only a single issue like its predecessor, Sirocco
included poems by Glover, Curnow [as ‘Philo’], A.R. D. Fairburn and

‘Kiwi in the Hat”
An original sketch drawing by Dr Seuss in 1976 when he travelled
to New Zealand, where he appeared on the country’s nationwide
television talk show “Town Cryer’ hosted by Max Cryer. Dr Seuss told
viewers he was curious about the Kiwi and hoped to see one. During
a break he said to host Max Cryer - “Ill draw you a kiwi in a hat.” he
quickly drew a pencil sketch and when back on live air said “Max I am
going to draw you a picture of a kiwi with a hat on...” he proceeded to
draw over the pencil in black felt pen. The picture was greeted with
enormous amusement. After that night the drawing was nevers seen
and presumed lost until found recently languishing in a cupboard.
The felt pen drawing is on pink paper with some foxing, 49.5 x 65cms,
inscribed on one side “A cat hatted TV Kee Wee for Max from Dr Seuss”,
and on the other side the drawing.

jackdaw is worn at the corners with light fraying at spine end, colours
crisp and bright. A good copy of an early and rare childrens book.
Harrison Weir organised the first cat show in England at the Crystal
Palace in London in 1871. He was apprenticed to George Baxter and
from Baxter he learnt to engrave, and he taught himself to draw birds
and animals.

Samoa Album
A supurb album of 48 platinum palladium photographs by Thomas
Andrew many with photographers titles, dates and numbers. The
images include scenic, harbour and village scenes, also the eruption
of Matavanu volcano, Savai’i Island, Samoa 1905. There are 25
portrait and group images [mostly portrait], these include a number
of photographs of young Samoan women. Others include ‘Tupua
Tamasese Lealofi I,’ bare torsoed chief, he has a moustache and a patch
of white hair on his hair line; ‘Roast Pig’ image of young men holding
up a large roast pig; ‘Luaki Namulau’ulu’ a leading orator chief, he
became the first leader of the Mau Movement and in 1909 was taken
into custody and exiled to Saipan in the Mariana Islands because
of his opposition to the German Colonial Governor, in 1916 the NZ
Government sent a ship to bring him home, he died on the journey;
‘Talolo’ in the ceremonial dress of a matai or young chief including a
whale teeth necklace, Talolo worked as Robert Louis Stevenson’s cook;
‘Mata’afa Losefo Laiufi and Court’ - a paramount chief of Samoa, who
was a major protagonist in the Second Samoan civil war, an important
proxy conflict in the lead up to W.W. II.; The Tomb of Tusitala, the grave
of Robert Louis Stevenson at Apia. etc.
The album is in its original H/C binding with tapa cloth boards and
leather title ‘Samoa’. Scuffed and leather worn, intact, image size
varies, approximately 21.5 x 14.2cms.
Thomas Andrew arrived in Samoa in 1891 where he opened a Studio in
Apia and lived there until his death in 1939. His photography was wide
ranging including portraits, landscapes and major events. Andrew took
photographs of significant historical and cultural value including the
recording on camera of key events in Samoa’s Colonial era such as the
Mau Movement, the volcanic eruption at Matavanu, and the funeral
of Robert Louis Stevenson. Examples of his work can be found in the
collections Te Papa and The National Library of New Zealand.

ground ca 1908.
Also picnicing scenes in the Bay of Islands which have been taken
by Davis himself with a time shutter camera to include himself in the
image; Northern Harbour at Monganui showing houses and quay;
Several scenes of the Bay of Islands taken from surrounding hilltops
and one from Flagstaff Hill ; etc
The photographs were taken by John Wm Davis circa 1905 he was
the son of Rowland Davis who arrived in Wellington on the Aurora in

painting on the right hand maihi shows Maui with his brothers
catching the fish which became the North Island.His brothers names

Carte de visites and Studio Portraits
An album of 155 photographs most of the images formal
photographs many taken at Hull, England. Also carte de visites by New
Zealand photographers, they include The Burton Brothers, London
Portrait Rooms Dunedin, W.R. Frost and Co Dunedin, Morris Dunedin,
Grand & Dunlop Christchurch, American Photo Coy Dunedin, Clifford
and Morris Dunedin. Also two carte de visites one of Commodore Nutt
and Miss Minnie Warren, he was a dwarf and an American entertainer,
he was touring New England with a circus when P.T. Barnum hired him
and gave him a wardrobe of naval uniforms and a miniature carriage
in the shape of a walnut, he became tone of the major attractions at
American Museum in New York City.
The other image of Mr and Mrs General Tom Thumb, this one inscribed
verso ‘Charles S Stratton compliments of Lavinia Warren Stratton.’ [his
wife]
General Tom Thumb was the stage name of Charles Sherwood
Stratton who achieved great fame as a performer under circus pioneer
P.T. Barnum.
The album is a leather Victorian album in poor condition, there is
spotting on some of the images, the majority are G. to VG.

An album [ca 1870’s] containing 47 half plate images of the West
Coast of New Zealand, they include various images of the Greymouth
flood - Sutherland’s Hotel surrounded by flood waters, Gilmer’s Corner
showing the Gold Office with people standing outside and street
scenes of the flood waters. A large number of photo’s showning
rail lines and bridges. Wharf scenes; Several images of West Coast
and Brunner coal mines; Koranui Incline Westport; Coalbrookdale
tunnel with miners and coal trucks; The GovernorGeneral, the
Marquis of Normanby visiting the coal mine at Brunnerton 1877. etc.
Photographs measure 14 x 20cms.
The images are all mounted on board which has browning and chips,
images are clean and clear with some fading. The album is in the
original HC binding worn and broken.

Auckland Representatives 1888
Original team photograph with names on mount beneath. Included
in the team are Timothy O’Connor and John Lecky who played for the
New Zealand side which toured Australia in 1884. Lecky scored 4 tries
on the ‘84 tour. 25.5 x 36cms. In original frame and mount.

463 TIMARU, [3 photographs]
City of Perth & Ben Venue [Plus]
1. An original mounted photograph [14 x 20cm] which shows the
Ben Venue and City of Perth after they broke loose from their
moorings. On the 14th May 1882 in heavy seas the cable holding
the Ben Venue broke and she capsized, the crew made for the City
of Perth but she too lost her anchors and ran aground beside the
Ben Venue, and the crews took to life boats. The harbourmaster
launched a life boat the “Alexandra”. During the rescue attempt the
Alexandra made several rescues then rolled four times with the
loss of ten lives, including seven members of the rescue boat crew.

14.5cms] of the “Alexandra” life boat on wheels being drawn by
horses. Men on board wearing life jackets, some smudging to the
image.

and a sprig of lavender and green flowers tooled onto the front cover

Conditions of sale
Please note: it is assumed that all bidders at auction have read and agreed to the conditions described on this page.
ART+OBJECT directors are available during the auction viewing to clarify any questions you may have.
1.
Registration: Only registered bidders may bid at auction. You are required to
complete a bidding card or absentee bidding form prior to the auction giving your
correct name, address and telephone contact + supplementary information such as
email addresses that you may wish to supply to ART+OBJECT
2.
Bidding: The highest bidder will be the purchaser subject to the auctioneer
accepting the winning bid and any vendor’s reserve having been reached. The
auctioneer has the right to refuse any bid. If this takes place or in the event of a
dispute the auctioneer may call for bids at the previous lowest bid and proceed
from this point. Bids advance at sums decreed by the auctioneer unless signaled
otherwise by the auctioneer. No bids may be retracted. The auctioneer retains the
right to bid on behalf of the vendor up to the reserve figure.
3.
Reserve: Lots are offered and sold subject to the vendor’s reserve price being met.
4.
Lots offered and sold as described and viewed: ART+OBJECT makes all
attempts to accurately describe and catalogue lots offered for sale. Notwithstanding
this neither the vendor nor ART+OBJECT accepts any liability for errors of
description or faults and imperfections whether described in writing or verbally. This
applies to questions of authenticity and quality of the item. Buyers are deemed to
have inspected the item thoroughly and proceed on their own judgment. The act of
bidding is agreed by the buyer to be an indication that they are satisfied on all counts
regarding condition and authenticity.
5.
Buyers premium: The purchaser by bidding acknowledges their acceptance of a
buyers premium of 18.5% plus GST on the premium to be added to the hammer
price in the event of a successful sale at auction. Please consult the relevant auction
catalogue to confirm the premium for each sale.
6.
ART+OBJECT is an agent for a vendor: A+O has the right to conduct the sale of
an item on behalf of a vendor. This may include withdrawing an item from sale for
any reason.
7.
Payment: Successful bidders are required to make full payment immediately post
sale – being either the day of the sale or the following day. If for any reason payment
is delayed then a 20% deposit is required immediately and the balance to 100%
required within 3 working days of the sale date. Payment can be made by Eftpos,
bank cheque or cash. Cheques must be cleared before items are available for
collection. Credit cards are not accepted.
8.
Failure to make payment: If a purchaser fails to make payment as outlined in point
7 above ART+OBJECT may without any advice to the purchaser exercise its right to:
a) rescind or stop the sale, b) re offer the lot for sale to an underbidder or at auction.
ART+OBJECT reserves the right to pursue the purchaser for any difference in sale
proceeds if this course of action is chosen, c) to pursue legal remedy for breach of
contract.
9.
Collection of goods: Purchased items are to be removed from ART+OBJECT
premises immediately after payment or clearance of cheques. Absentee bidders
must make provision for the uplifting of purchased items (see instructions on the
facing page)
10.
Bidders obligations: The act of bidding means all bidders acknowledge that
they are personally responsible for payment if they are the successful bidder. This
includes all registered absentee or telephone bidders. Bidders acting as an agent for
a third party must obtain written authority from ART+OBJECT and provide written
instructions from any represented party and their express commitment to pay all
funds relating to a successful bid by their nominated agent.
11.
Bids under reserve & highest subject bids: When the highest bid is below the
vendor’s reserve this work may be announced by the auctioneer as sold ‘ subject to
vendor’s authority’ or some similar phrase. The effect of this announcement is
to signify that the highest bidder will be the purchaser at the bid price if the vendor
accepts this price. If this highest bid is accepted then the purchaser has entered a
contract to purchase the item at the bid price plus any relevant buyers premium.
Important advice for buyers
The following information does not form part of the conditions of sale, however
buyers, particularly first time bidders are recommended to read these notes.
A.
Bidding at auction: Please ensure your instructions to the auctioneer are clear
and easily understood. It is well to understand that during a busy sale with multiple
bidders the auctioneer may not be able to see all bids at all times. It is recommended
that you raise your bidding number clearly and without hesitation. If your bid is made
in error or you have misunderstood the bidding level please advise the auctioneer
immediately of your error – prior to the hammer falling. Please note that if you have
made a bid and the hammer has fallen and you are the highest bidder you have
entered a binding contract to purchase an item at the bid price. New bidders in
particular are advised to make themselves known to the sale auctioneer who will
assist you with any questions about the conduct of the auction.
B.
Absentee bidding: ART+OBJECT welcomes absentee bids once the necessary
authority has been completed and lodged with ART+OBJECT. A+O will do all it can
to ensure bids are lodged on your behalf but accepts no liability for failure to carry
out these bids. See the Absentee bidding form in this catalogue for information on
lodging absentee bids. These are accepted up to 2 hours prior to the published
auction commencement.
C.
Telephone bids: The same conditions apply to telephone bids. It is highly preferable
to bid over a landline as the vagaries of cellphone connections may result in
disappointment. You will be telephoned prior to your indicated lot arising in the
catalogue order. If the phone is engaged or connection impossible the sale will
proceed without your bidding. At times during an auction the bidding can be frenetic
so you need to be sure you give clear instructions to the person executing your bids.
The auctioneer will endeavour to cater to the requirements of phone bidders but
cannot wait for a phone bid so your prompt participation is requested.
D.
New Zealand dollars: All estimates in this catalogue are in New Zealand dollars.
The amount to be paid by successful bidders on the payment date is the New
Zealand dollar amount stated on the purchaser invoice. Exchange rate variations are
at the risk of the purchaser.
