Message from the Commissioner
It is with great pleasure that , on behalf of the Yukon Territorial
Government , I extend my best wishes to all those athletes , coaches
and officials attending the 1976 Arctic Winter Games , Schefferville ,
Quebec .
Sport has always been recognized as an important means of
fostering communication and co-operation between nations through
friendly competition. This unifying influence is no less significant in
the Northern regions of this continent , and it is gratifying to see
athletes from all parts of Northern Canada and Alaska brought
together in an effort to promote athletic excellence and greater
understanding among northern neighbours .
The Territorial Government 's encouragement goes beyond' its
moral support . This year , considerable fun ds have been expended to
cover the costs of transportation for those participating in the
Games , and iffuture games are to be held , a larger share of this cost
may have to be born by the participants . This increase , I hope , will
not dampen the enthusiasm for what is an important sporting and
cultural event north of the 60th Parallel.
Good luck to all of you in these and future competitions .
Sincerely ,
J. Smith ,
Commissioner of the Yukon Territory
Message from the President
of the Yukon Sports Federation
On behalf of myself and the Yukon Sports Federation I would like
to congratulate all the participants in the Arctic Winter Games , on
their success in being selected to make the trip to Schefferville .
It has been the policy of the organi zing committee to make the
Yukon team as representative as possible and to involve more of the
smaller communities in the team selection . To some degree I fee l we
have been successful but we still have a long way to go. To those
participants from the communities outside Whitehorse , who made
the team , I would extend an extra word of congratu lations and would
encourage those who participated in the trials but did not make the
team to continue to try out for future games . To those communities
that did not participate this time, I hope you will become involved in
future and make the Arctic Games a truly Yukon experience . I am
naturally disappointed that I will not be able to make the trip to
Schefferv ille but my thoughts will be with you and I wish everyone
all the best for a successful games .
I would be amiss if I did not thank the organizing committee and
the coaches and their wi ves for their efforts a.nd patience during the
months of preparation . I am particularly indebted to Kathy Lanefor
her continued enthusiasm and hard work in fund raising , without
which the cost of the games would have been much greater to all of
us . I am also gratefuL to Art Webster for his documentation of and
innovative approach to the games , and to Bill Reidfor his handling
of the equipment , a most tedious and thankless job . Finally , the
support of the gov ernment must be noted. This has been an expensi ve games and without the backing of the government they would
not have taken place .
In f uture we must realize that there must be greater personal
contri bution from organizers and parti cipants alike , if the games
are to continue .
Once again congratulations and good luck to all the Yukon par tl c1pants in Schefferville and a sincere thank you to all those who
ha ve helped to make the f ourth Arctic Winter Games a reality.
Best Wishes ,
Dave Stockdale
