Message From
The Executive Director
Welcome to The Burlington Performing Arts Centre’s 2016/2017 Season! In this sixth season, we are
introducing all-in pricing and have tagged each show with their respective genre so you can discover
more about each performer at a glance. You will find more of your favourite genres and a few new
ones, including voices and introducing genNEXT – programming geared towards 20-35 year olds.
I am also proud to have so many award winning artists in our program this year.
I feel strongly that The Burlington Performing Arts Centre is a cultural hub for Burlington and the
surrounding communities. We strive to nurture and support our local presenters and producers, to act
as an energetic catalyst for a vigorous arts sector, to animate the community, and engage with you
in meaningful arts experiences. A special thank you to Costin Manu, Programming and Community
Engagement Manager who has facilitated a program that is at the highest professional standard, is
accessible yet challenging, that creates a dialogue, and is for people of all ages.
Message From The Board
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to express how fortunate we are to be able to experience
a broad collection of vibrant and energetic performances right here in Burlington. From artistic and
educational programming, to community outreach initiatives, The Burlington Performing Arts Centre
continues to showcase the best in performing arts. We are confident the 2016/2017 Season will inspire
you, your family and friends.
None of this would be possible without the contributions from our donors, sponsors, patrons, City
and community partners, staff and volunteers. On behalf of the Board of Directors, a heartfelt thank
you to each of you for your efforts and support.
We hope to see you at the theatre - soon!

Micah Barnes
All-In Price: Regular $47 | Series $42
All-In Price: Regular $47 | Series $42
Luke’s shows are built around his unique take on
the Blue Eyed Soul and early Motown musical
landscape. Heavily influenced by such icons
as Al Green, Hall & Oates and Marvin Gaye,
Luke’s performance delivers an alluring mix of
raw energy and passion. Formerly one half of
Canadian duo McMaster & James, Luke has
opened for Randy Bachman, Justin Timberlake,
Christina Aguilera and has collaborated with
superstars such as Rihanna. His exciting live
performance strongly reflects the power and
emotion of his early Motown influences, and
is further shaped by a confidence and “total
package” audience appeal. Luke will be joined
on stage by his band.
Having cut his teeth in the cabarets and jazz
clubs of Toronto while still a teenager, Micah
became a well-loved singer-songwriter on the
Queen Street scene before joining The Nylons
and touring the world. His single New York Story
shot to the top of the jazz charts in both Canada
and the US and resulted in Micah being named
the Toronto Indie Awards best Jazz Act of 2014.
Returning to the jazz oriented songwriting of his
earlier years has resulted in a series of critically
acclaimed solo recordings including his most
recent, Domesticated.

through eccentric and lawless characters. A hybrid performance language includes infrared
technology and an on-stage surveillance system alongside Out Innerspace’s trailblazing movement
invention. Seven dancers fight for the theatre, losing and gaining the grounds for their power and
identity. A mysterious third party is present in every conflict, teaching us how to desire, and leading
us into patterns. With influences ranging from Charlie Chaplin to Die Antwoord, Orson Welles to
Slavoj Zizek, the music of Bernard Herrmann meets urban underground and an original composition

When you start a band as a group of teenage best friends in your small Canadian hometown, it’s
hard to imagine that a decade later you will be touring the world and putting out a steady stream
of acclaimed albums. As the years have worn on, indie-rockers Tokyo Police Club continue to defy
the odds. Lead singer/bass player and principal songwriter Dave Monks, drummer Greg Alsop,
keyboardist/guitarist Graham Wright, and guitarist Josh Hook have harnessed their primal and
instinctual joy to make Tokyo Police Club’s tightest, brightest, and certainly raddest batch of songs to
date, with their two-part and self-released Melon Collie and the Infinite Radness EPs being let loose
in 2016.
A crew dedicated to inspiring, motivating, and energizing every individual to be themselves and find
what makes them who they are. Their self-titled style “Brain Banging” is a series of connections and

Newfoundland-based band The Once have
been quietly making a name for themselves in
their native Canada. They’ve collected a trio of
Canadian Folk Music Awards and earned two
Juno nominations for best Roots/Traditional
Album. While the trio has recently ventured
into new artistic territory, The Once remains
rooted in its essential musical elements –
Geraldine Hollett’s incandescent voice, the trio’s
gorgeous harmonies and the spirited acoustic
instrumentation supplied by Andrew Dale and
Phil Churchill.
Less than five months after meeting for the first
time, Collabro won Britain’s Got Talent and the
rest, as they say, is history. Collabro are Michael
Auger, Richard Hadfield, Jamie Lambert, Matt
Pagan and Thomas Redgrave, who first got
together in a north London pub, having met
through mutual friends and social media. The
world’s number one musical theatre vocal
group, they signed with Simon Cowell’s Syco

the UK and internationally.
Julie Crochetiere has been practicing her craft
since she was seven, playing classical piano and

a gig with a society band and quickly learned
a repertoire of 200 songs. By the time she was
eighteen she was doing 100 dates a year. In 2014,

Ed “Pee Wee Charles” Ringwald (steel guitar), Dan Howlett (fiddle, vocals), Paul
“Chappy” Chapman (guitar and vocals), Matthew Lima (stand up bass) and Jimmy

A shoe salesman chops off his foot with an
axe. An esthetician has hers amputated by an
outboard motor. At opposite ends of the same
country, staring out at two different oceans,
two people each lose something on the same
day and are sent crashing together toward the
dark heart of Canada. Inspired by the Salish Sea
human foot discoveries, Receiver of Wreck is a
grotesque comedy about human waste and the
mystic potential of change. Winner of the Pat The

Described by The New York Times as “Hilarious... a one-man tour-de-force!” it is hands down one
of the funniest solo shows you will ever see. On a quest to answer the age old question, “What do
women want?” Robert Dubac seamlessly transforms himself into five hysterical boneheads who each
offer sidesplitting advice on how to straddle the gender gap - all while drinking a beer. Men and
women laugh non-stop as THE MALE INTELLECT nudges the battle of the sexes towards a humorous

scene since 2003. Released in the fall of 2015, his self-titled second album
focuses on traditional roots rhythms and arrangements.

A compromise free, colourfully blunt singer-songwriter, Laura Cole, brings
her edgy, soulful and distinctively original vision to life on stage. Singersongwriter Tomi Swick is a Hamilton native and Juno Award Winner for
Best New Artist (2007). Tomi wowed the audience when he appeared in
2013 for the inaugural season of the Live and Local Music Series. We are

Grug and the Rainbow
With a certain je ne sais quois of lyrical sensibility, melodious composition
and timeless storytelling, Mary Simon has a “gritty roots rock” sound, not to
be missed. Stuart Laughton returns to the Live and Local Series with his oneman multi-media show, Trumpet Romance, using narration, trumpet, guitar,
harmonica, and a series of projected images – filled with gentle self-irony

Rent the Centre
The Burlington Performing Arts Centre strives to nurture and support local presenters and producers,
in addition to acting as an energetic catalyst for a vigorous arts sector. Burlington has a substantial
performing arts community; we are thrilled to have many of these local arts organizations perform
on our stages and join us as we entertain, engage, and inspire all of Burlington!
The Main Theatre is a multi-purpose performance
venue seating 718 guests. Audience members
enjoy excellent sightlines and proximity to the
stage, proving intimate connections between
performers and the audience. Our world-class
acoustics and newly installed acoustic shell fine
tune each performance, enhancing the quality
and talent we bring through our doors. The Main
Theatre also includes a six-storey fly tower and an
interchangeable orchestra pit to accommodate
more elaborate productions.
The Community Studio Theatre hosts smaller-scale
events and performances for audiences up
to 200 people. The Community Studio Theatre
was designed as a flexible “black box” space
with 2,500 square feet of sprung floor space
to accommodate rehearsals, small receptions,
intimate concerts, meetings, recitals, and can be
used as a holding area for large stage productions
in the Main Theatre.
The Family Lobby is a unique venue for receptions,
exhibits, corporate functions and civic events. The
5,000-square-foot lobby is surrounded by glass
walls and encircled by a mezzanine level, creating
a unique social setting.
Community presenters bring
a variety of events to our stages:
Award Ceremonies
Choral Performances
Dance Competitions
Dance Recitals
