NUITS SONORES, ACT II
Nuits Sonores brings in its second decade with the just passion
and conviction as before along with a real drive for innovation and
reinvention.
The festival’s philosophy remains unchanged – to develop an urban
environment open to multidisciplinary contemporary fields such as
music, graphic design, scenography, visual creation and digital culture.
As it stands, the festival aims to pursue its status as an “odyssey in the
city”. In the past decade, Nuits Sonores has explored Lyon – night and
day, top to bottom – its streets, public spaces, nightspots and cultural
institutions, jewels of Lyon’s cultural heritage and industrial wastelands
that had thus far been simply looked over. The Arty Farty team hopes to
make this journey through the city the backbone of Nuits Sonores, at
the heart of its identity. For ten years, this has been a sine qua non for
the festival’s existence along with a continuous struggle to make use of
the city’s more bizarre locations.
This year, Nuits Sonores will be making use of the industrial wasteland
known as the Anciennes Usines Brossette for the last time. This will be
a special tribute to the venue though scenography and reinvention in
visual creation. The 2013 edition of the festival will also mark the return
to the venue Les Subsistances. This stunning venue on the Quai SaintVincent will play host to a number of events – NS Days, Carte Blanche
(this year for the city of Brussels) and Mini Sonore, the concurrent
children’s festival. The major evolution marking the festival’s entry into
its second day is the huge development of daytime events.
The festival is still just as much a love story for what the night holds.
Night-time in the city is a time for meeting, fusion, sharing and
liberation. The night is the territory for possibility, freedom, fraternity
and creation. We know and love the night most of all for its artists,
musicians and DJs who will carry us through our Nuits Sonores
journey.
The main priority of Nuits Sonores is, of course, the music. The festival,
born out of a meeting of a passionate group of electro fans, has
constructed its DNA around two indestructible pillars. The first pillar
is diversity, derived from the festival founders’ different points of view
on electronic and independent culture, in keeping with the original
“panorama of electronic music” philosophy that has been in place
since 2003. The second pillar is high artistic standards, which has
allowed the team to carefully invent, edit, contextualise and construct
an artistic identity in order to gain and maintain the public’s trust. This
intricate lacework demonstrates the unique spirit of the Nuits Sonores
festival.

CARTE BLANCHE TO BRUSSELS
electrochoc
Brussels, ma belle
Nuits sonores has once again invited a magnificent city to take part in this year’s festival, Brussels. The
Belgian capital is beautiful, cosmopolitan, welcoming and, of course, cool. It is a total contrast to the
gloominess and stress of Parisian life which is only an hour and a half away…and it is just three hours from
Lyon!
Since the Carte Blanche concept was introduced in 2002, Brussels has always been a strong candidate, but
was temporarily put aside for some other irresistible cities like Berlin, Manchester, Tokyo and Montreal.
Today, it is Brussels’ time to shine! Nuits sonores has declared its love for this wonderful European
Metropololis having discovered it through visits, meetings, concerts and nighttime explorations. The festival
program from Brussels is sure to be one of the most enriching and adventurous programs so far.
Brussels is made so exceptional by the abundance of creativity, diversity and projects continually going on.
The Brussels Carte Blanche could have gone way beyond our limits due to the huge amount of proposals and
opportunities that came our way. Talent in Brussels stretches across a number of artistic disciplines and the
locals certainly know how to make the most of what their city has to offer. For this reason, we have chosen
not only to focus on the music scene, but to also present a huge panorama of the city including cinema,
video, clips, graphic design, food and cycling!

3.30PM / 4.30PM : Kosme (Caramelo / Lyon - France) Dj set
For almost 15 years, Kosme has built up his own musical identity, largely inspired by music from Chicago and
Detroit. His expressive passion on stage and the groove in his sets have led him to play in clubs like the Rex
Club (Paris), the Weekend Club (Berlin) and l’Ambassade (Lyon) where he holds a monthly residency. He
alternates deep, house and techno sounds with a unique touch of the dance floor, allowing him to keep his
audience on edge and ecstatic.

Booth Sessions (LBS) or simply as a DJ set. This
year, he is back to perform with Carl Cox in NS

Behind the pseudonym hides an English artist who

This group from Bordeaux with a singer from Turin
has a punk attitude and the blasphemous name

their unabashed music goes far beyond the limits of

Geoff Barrow. She infuses genres and atmospheres
to create dark, stripped-back music, which has
received a lot of media attention. The former
journalist from Berlin never ceases to fascinate with
her eclectic creations combining dub, 60s music and
chilling melodies.
6.15pm / 7pm : LUMERIANS (Knitting
Factory Records / Oakland - united
states) live
The Californian group Lumerians, inspired by
voodoo rhythms, psychedelic organs and space
disco, is also sensitive to the texture and repetition
of an electro act. They travel freely in a familiar,
yet undiscovered, world. Their live performances
revolve around dance, which makes for a
psychological experience transcending the senses.
7.30pm / 8.15pm : NURSE WITH WOUND
(United Dairies/ united kingdom) Live
Nurse With Wound’s recordings, inspired by
Krautrock and Surrealism, make for minimalist
music shaken up with industrial tones. Throughout
the 1980s, the quartet gained its reputation as a
real symbol of the underground rock scene. Just
as prolific today, Nurse With Wound continues to
produce albums in collaboration with artists like Jim
O’Rourke and Sunn O))).
8.45pm / 9.30pm : K-X-P (Melodic UK
records / Helsinki - Finland) Live
Following their first self-titled album which lay
somewhere between Krautrock and electronica, the
Finnish group K-X-P are back with K-X-P II, set for
release in February 2013. K-X-P delivers an intense
hybrid of shamanic rock, glam-punk, grating dance
and Krautrock, inspired by P.I.L. and Bad Brains.
The new, explosive album looks promising for even
wilder live punk performances.

3.30pm / 5pm : Shifted (Mote-Evolver /
LondON - united kingdom) dj set
Shifted immediately caught the techno community’s
attention with their “Drained” EP. The heavy, peeled
back sound from the enigmatic producer harmonises
perfectly with the hypnotic, experimental style of
the renowned Mote-Evolver label. On top of being
in high demand as a remixer, Shifted also brings his
talents to his performances.
5pm / 6.30pm : DVS1 (Klockworks /
Minneapolis - united states) Dj set
A real figurehead in the techno scene in the South
West of the US, DVS1 creates simple, effective
music to capture the feeling of the moment. His
musical creations conjure up coherent, evocative
and powerful emotions, which vary depending on
where and when he plays. DVS1 is a seasoned
producer and turntable master who is responsible
for some impressive EPs on the labels Klockworks,
Transmat and Enemy
6.30pm / 7.45pm : Planetary Assault
Systems (Mote-Evolver / Reading -
planetary assAult systems
united kingdom) Live
Luke Slater, pioneer of the English techno scene and
founder of the record label Mote-Evolver, launched
his Planetary Assault Systems project in 2009. He
released Temporary Suspension (2009) and The
Messenger (2011) on the Ostgut Ton label. These two
albums explore a dark, powerful techno with hints
of electronica. Meanwhile, the DJ and producer
continues to develop his label Mote-Evolver by
signing some of today’s most productive techno
artists including Shifted, Lucy and Psyk.
7.45pm / 9.30pm : BEN KLOCK (Klockworks
- Ostgut Ton / Berlin - germany) Dj set
Ben Klock – DJ, producer and founder of the
Klockworks label – is without a doubt one of the
most prominent figures of today’s techno scene.
Launched in 2006, Klockworks acts primarily as a
platform for Ben to publish his compositions, which
are more brutal and spontaneous than those recorded
on his other label Ostgut Ton. His approach has
changed since discovering DVS1 performing live in
Minneapolis. Fascinated by the DJ, Klock signed him
to his label and opened it up to other artists including
Rod and Trevino.

5pm / 5.45pm : CAMERA (Bureau B /

The title of Camera’s first album, Krautrock Guerilla,
meant one thing –spontaneous, unauthorised public
performances. Regenerating this spontaneity and
energy in the studio this time round, Camera moves
beyond Krautrock Motorik to psychedelic passages
and interstellar realms.
6.15pm / 7pm : SPECTRUM ( SPACE AGE
RECORDINGS / Rugby - united kingdom)
Live
Spectrum, created in 1989, is a project led by Pete
“Sonic Boom” Kember following the break-up
of Spacemen 3, the mystic duo he played in with
Jason Pierce. The band today has great influence
on artists such as Ivan Smagghe, Death in Vegas
and Zombie Zombie. The music of this geometrically
variable group borrows from pop, rock, psychedelia
and experimental sounds, all in keeping with the
tones of Spacemen 3.
7.30pm / 8.15pm : GIRLS AGAINST BOYS (Jade
Tree / Washington – UNITED STATES) Live
Special tour to celebrate the 20th
anniversary of the release of their
outstanding album Venus Luxure N° 1 Baby.
Girls Against Boys, a pillar of the American indie
rock and post-hardcore scene, has long been
surrounded by a dark, and even depressive, aura.
Formed in 1988, the group is renowned for its deep,
husky vocals and the heavy sound produced by two
rumbling basses. Their live renditions of addictive
tunes and energetic riffs really get the crowd going.
8.45pm / 9.30pm : Civil Civic (Melbourne

Andrès is one of the lesser-known heroes of
Detroit’s underground music scene. Since the late
90s, he has built up a highly-acclaimed repertoire,
often blurring the lines between certain musical
genres as is evident on his latest EP, New for U. He
is also the DJ for the cult hip hop group Slum Village.
The beat maker’s instrumental tracks have certainly
reached new heights.

According to Vitalic, “disco can be everywhere”.
The DJ from Dijon is known for his music combining
techno, electro and electronica, but he is also
quite the disco fan. This becomes rather obvious
in just the first few seconds of his tracks Poney

a remarkable tour in 2010, Vitalic is back with an

wild 60s pop. After a highly acclaimed tour of the
States, the duo from Perpignan are back with a
new, timeless album, Crystal Anis, which could
be considered a mystical lovechild of the Velvet

6.15 / 7pm : The Mojomatics (Outside

7.30pm / 8.15pm : The Raveonettes (Vice

Live
Since starting out in 2002, the Raveonettes have
made their mark with a feverish rock style halfway
between 80s noise music and 60s flavoured pop.
Along the lines of Sonic Youth and the Velvet
Underground, the Danish duo have managed to
shape their own unique sound, with an underlying
tension that crosses noisy chaos with enchanting
pop melodies.

Bal2Vieux @ Nuits sonores !
The Bal2Vieux (which takes place in Guéthary) is an institution
of the Basque Country and (sometimes) beyond. It came about
one August night in the Basque commune thanks to JulesEdouard Moustic’s enthusiasm (who lives five days a week in
Guethary and spends the other two in the Presipality of Groland)
with the participation of Rémy Kolpa Kopoul, the historic voice
of Radio Nova and skilled DJ (nicknamed DJ RKK). The two
oldies were quickly reunited for the 2010 edition by Patrick
Leygonie (a.k.a. RJ Rapsode), pioneer of pirate radios and cocreator of Radio Nova.
These old-hand DJs (with nearly 200 collective years between
the three of them), get things going with an open selection of
rock, Latino, soul, reggae, afro, hip hop, Balkan and Brazilian
music with no restrictions on remixes, except for the old clichés like Dalida, Claude François and Patrick
Sébastien. Guéthary’s fourth Bal2Vieux is the biggest party of the area, currently bringing in crowds of over
3,000 people. Since 2011, it has made the rare trip to the Nimes Feria, the Week-end des Curiosités in Toulouse,
the Black & Basque Festival in Bayonne (another of Moustic’s initiatives), the Emmaüs Festival in Pau and
now Nuits Sonores in Lyon! We’ve invited a special guest to join the trio for the occasion – Jackie Berroyer. A
familiar face at Nuits Sonores, where he has taken part in the legendary Extra blind test, Berroyer also shares
the antenna at Le Mouv’ along with Laurent Garnier and Moustic.
Moustic (paris - france) dj set
Known as the official news presenter of the Presipality of Groland since the 90s, Jules-Edouard Moustic now
acts as DJ. Since March 2012, he has hosted the colourful and original Mouv’tic Mix music program on Le
Mouv’.
DJ RKK (paris - france) dj set
At the end of the 70s, Rémy Kolpa Kopoul was one of the first journalists to take an interest in world music
(particularly Brazilian music). His raspy voice is easily recognisable for Radio Nova’s listeners where he sets
his eclectic musical tastes loose.
Rapsode (paris - france) dj set
Patrick Leygonie, who created Radio Ivre in the 70s, already ruled the airwaves by inundating Paris with
reggae through pirate radios. Today, he continues to pump up the dancefloor with totally unique sounds. The
co-founder of Radio Nova brings freedom and force to his talent through exceptional musical fantasies.

shoots, screen printing on fajitas and as many
empanadas as you can poke a stick at. Be sure to
sport your finest moustache.
NAPALM PIMS SELF BURNING MAN
Following on from “Napal Pims Explodes”, the
retrospective of a very personal raw piece of
digital art, this modest young artist is putting on
an exhibition that reflects an intimate view of his
loved ones and the world. This new collection,
“Spontaneous Combustion”, will make its première
at Extra! It highlights the importance of gestures of
(re)creation rather than just the finished product.
DEMOCRACIA
At BF15, the Madrid collective Democracia will
present their video installation Ser y Durar (To Be
and To Last) which is the motto of David Belle’s
urban sport invention, Parkour. The project is part of
a trilogy focusing on the city of Madrid, uncovering
the relationship between contemporary culture and
significant social, symbolic and historic sites.
DSCRD
The members of the group Discordance, who are
both musicians and sound engineers, enjoy getting
involved in direct experiments with the public. They
split their time between releasing electrifying techno
EPs on the label Dement3d and setting up inventive
installations. It is certainly the only exhibition that
will transport you across the sound barrier!
GUERILLA GARDENING
The guerrilla gardeners have got a new urban
project that lies somewhere between land art and
street art. Anything goes – a seed parade, moss
graffiti and of course, the ace up their sleeve: the
weapon of mass vegetation.
Gather the troops, some serious street culture is
coming to Extra!
STROBOBALL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: SECOND
EDITION
Stroboball is without a doubt one of the world’s most
extreme sports. It was invented in Lyon at the end of
the 1980s and brought back to the light by Extra! in
2012. The concept is based around a classic indoor
football match, except that the ball measures one
metre in diameter, the goals are three metres high
and half-time lasts less than two minutes. The arena
(which is now known as the famous “Strobodrome”)
is lit only by strobe lights and some seriously
powerful techno music fuels the match!
MUSICAL CHAIRS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP:
RECORD EDITION
50 players, 49 chairs. Minimum. Everybody dances
and makes their way around the chairs with their
arms crossed. When the DJ stops the music, it’s a
mad rush for a free chair and the slowest person
misses out! This year the referee is a Guinness
World Records representative. Sit down, dude.
RUNNING CLUB
Don’t bother looking around. This is the best rehab
plan for the festival. When all your friends are having
drinks and nibbles, don your best running shoes,
your fluoro sweatpants and discover the city via a
night-time urban jog with a sound system! A steady
10km, a shower and bam, you’re ready for the next
five or six nights!
TWIST’N’HOUSE
Twist’n’house is one of the simplest and coolest
projects in the world – it involves house music plus
a giant game of Twister, where players have to place
their hands and feet on coloured circles without
losing their balance. Of course, this will all happen in
the middle of the street right amongst the public.
LES DÉRIVANTS
For this installation, Marc Lathuillière will place one

hundred artistic projects in luminous bottles which
will only be complete once in water. The installation
will take place on l’Ile Barbe with a spectacular
backing soundtrack. It could also be considered a
way of transforming failure and grief into some sort
of future.
HOUSE CREAM TRUCK
Like New York block parties, the House Cream
Truck plays a delicious selection of house music
all throughout Lyon during Nuits Sonores. Nomadic
street clubbing is worth its weight in ice-cream!
TONIGHT TONIGHT
Amateurs of alternative culture mixing a futuristic
sci-fi vision with electro, this event – which would
be an excellent subject for Tracks magazine on
Arte- is made for you. In one night, dive into the
Steampunk universe (which some call retrofuturism)
and its powerful design constructed around gears,
pistons, leather, dreadlocks, studded boots and
aviator sunglasses. This all revolves around electro
with undue swing tendancies. If they’d known about
it, Jules Verne and Georges Méliès would’ve joined
in for sure.
THE BIGGEST BBQ OF FRANCE
It’s all in the name. On the menu – a buffet of
nu-disco put together by the Lyonnais team of
Macadam Mambo (DJ Harvey is quite a fan) and a
huge barbecue, even bigger than what you’d find
in Buenos Aires. A 9-hour, 25- continuous grill (with
Berlin style currywurst, beef brochettes and even
Czech pork knees). You certainly won’t go hungry
during the festival.
ELECTRO SALADE
Extra! has got another hipster project on its plate
this year. A huge, free banquet made only from
rejected fruit and vegetables that aren’t fit for sale or
are third-hand. This is all to be put together with and
by the public. This event aims to promote awareness
of food wastage while bringing together people of
all backgrounds and generations. It also highlights
the fundamental philosophy of DIY life: sharing,
awareness, action and recycling.
PUT YOUR GUM UP
Des affiches collées un peu partout en ville et sur

Nuits Sonores venues by day and by night. These
posters will contain simple questions such as “Are
you having a good night?”, “Did you met the man/
woman of your life at night?” and “Who has been
your favourite artist tonight?”. Voting couldn’t be
simpler – take a piece of gum, give it a chew and
stick it onto the poster’s answer space!
POLATIONSHIP
The Polaroid camera is an object of curiosity and
amusement which creates a unique relationship
between the photographer and his/her subject.
Behind the scenes at the 2012 festival, we ended
up with an unexpected series of portraits of the
Nuits Sonores artists thanks to Pierre Humbert.
Polationship is a festive exhibition arranged around
Pierre’s snapshots. It also hopes to act as an ode
to safari photography – you can hire a polaroid
camera, snap away during the festival and come and
share your photos over brunch.
SHORT-CIRCUIT IN THE FIELD
In 2500 years, when historians of the future will be
looking into the Extra! program, they will wonder
why we put on such mysterious events. The idea
is to reconstruct a real farm from the Monts-duLyonnais (with the barnyard, straw etc.) in the heart
of Lyon. There will be local products for sale, and a
DJ stage set up on a Massey Ferguson tractor.
OYSTER SONORE
You’ve got to wonder why nobody thought of this
project earlier. An oyster cabin (with the added
bonus of one of the world’s best oyster shuckers),
some chilled white wine and a serious sound system
fuelled by a handful of top DJs. The world is indeed
your oyster!
BERLIN MON AMOUR, DIE BIENNALE
This declaration of love to the city of Berlin and its
music scene (with a live show by Pole and a DJ set
by Barbara Preisinger) will take place in the magical
Musée Gadagne (TBC). The least we can say is that
the friendship between Lyon and Berlin is built on
very strong foundations.

In partNERSHIP WITH les femmes s’en mêlent
Les Femmes festival is known for its high standards
and eclecticism, and is always carried out with
great passion and curiosity. The festival has
been supporting creativity and the discovery of
adventurous and audacious female artists since
1997. Leaning on the ever richer and varied female
scene, it has developed over the years into an
essential European cultural meeting. Activist,
hedonist, curious, free, unbridled, complex-free,
pertinent and now indispensable, the festival acts as
a voice for independent women in music.
7pm / 9.30pm: DIANE (station essence /
lyon - france) dj set
Trained at the classical music conservatory, Diane
discovered her passion for electronic cultures very
early on and quickly traded in the piano for the
turntables. Diane develops her style with influences
from the experimental techno of Juan Atkins and
Luke Hess. She mixes cosmic, synthetic sounds with
incisive rhythms to concoct something borrowed
from Dial Records and Delano Smith’s deep and
Detroit techno.

voice we are already familiar with thanks to Agoria’s
single Heart Beating. Solo, Kid A creates electronic
landscapes and minimalist jazz collages to build up a
gracious, modern kind of trip-hop.

P.I.L.A.R. is an independent musician, who brings her
unique vocal timbre to her own compositions that
she plays alone with just synthesisers, microphones
and her studio for company. Having long been a
part of the Cold Wave movement, her songs are
reminiscent of the electro, coldwave and shoegaze
music of the 90s.

nuits sonores, THE NIGHT
Edition 2013 : THE SPIRIT OF NUITS
SONORES
With its eleventh year up its sleeve, Nuits Sonores
enters its second decade with as much desire
and outlook on the festival’s construction as its
heartbeat – the night program. It is very important
to us to maintain high standards with an element
of surprise. We also aim to keep it fresh and in line
with the artistic side that holds the festival’s identity
together.
Since 2003, Nuits Sonores has relentlessly sought
out new artistic territories and aesthetics, always
keeping new generations of artists and the public
in mind.
The Arty Farty team continues to build up a solid
festival with a global objective, to express opinions
and formalise stories and meetings. Each stage has
a story to tell and weaves together established and
up-and-coming artistic personalities. This intense
expressionism unfolds over the course of three
nights. The Nuits Sonores programmers have set
up nine stages, sometimes in collaboration with
special guests (Pedro Winter and Dan Snaith), other
festivals and organisations (Oyafestivalen, Partizan)
or through the vitality of a certain area (Future
Sound of UK).
With over 50 artists, the Nuits Sonores program is
reaching out to new horizons (Africa, India) and a
new generation of emerging artists (Paradis, The
Mujeres, Evian Christ) without losing its focus on the
local scene (Spitzer, Cape Town Effects, Alto Clark).
This multifaceted expressionism brings us a
program which acts as a medium between
disciplines (particularly by connecting music,
scenography, visual creation and graphic design),
aesthetics and artistic generations. This modern
program knows its roots as well as its potential. It is
open to evolution yet remains detached from today’s
commercial pressures.

night 1 / Stage 1
CURATED STAGE BY PEDRO WINTER
SBTRKT
9.30PM / 10.30PM: BOSTON BUN (Ed
Banger / Valence - France) DJ set
Even if he’s just starting out, the Boston Bun talent
is obvious. They’ve got their Leanhouse volumes 1
and 2 mixtapes signed to Discobelle, an exceptional
remix of their track House Music by Maelstrom as
well as a handful of collaborations with Club Cheval.
Boston Bun’s sound sets the scene for acid-house,
stuffed with overblown bass and 90s drumbeats.
10.30PM / 11.15PM: ALUNAGEORGE (Tri
Angle Records / London - England)
Live
AlunaGeorge is sort of the best of British music at
the moment. There’s English bass culture hooked
up with the softness of RnB. Their music has been
described as a “minimal poly-rhythmic advance”.
But one thing is certain, their sound can’t be
summed up to one style but rather to a mix of
experimental hip hop, 90s RnB and house music.
11.30pm / 12.30am: BRETON A/V LIVE
(FatCat Records / London — england)
Live
Born out of the London squat scene, Breton is
a producer group of music and film. Their first
album Other People’s Problems is a fascinating
mix of incisive pop, seductive hip hop and intense
electronica. This year at Nuits Sonores, Breton
will present their new project Surrounded, which
has been hailed the perfect combination of sound,
rhythm and visuals.

12.45AM / 1:45AM: Yasiin BEY a.k.a. MOS
DEF (Rawkus Records / New York, United

Yasiin Bey a.k.a. Mos Def is a symbolic figure of the
New York independent rap scene who mixes hip
hop, jazz, blues and rock and transplants lyrics from
the golden years of the hip hop collective Native
Tongues. This family of artists founded by Afrika
Bambaataa counted amongst its members De La
Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and Black Sheep and
welcomed Mos Def right from the beginning, as his
talent couldn’t be ignored.
2.00AM / 3.00AM: BUSY P (Ed Banger
Records / Paris - France) DJ set
Busy P has played top-quality sets for the past
ten years at Nuits Sonores. This year, he’ll bring
together his musical influences on stage – old
school hip hop, explosive rock, post-dubstep hybrids
– and he’ll top it all off with a special set to celebrate
ten years with his label Ed Banger.

He is currently working on an EP due for release in
February 2013 on Technorama.
11pm/ 12.30am : PARADIS (Beats In Space /
Paris — France) Dj set
Discovered by Tim Sweeney, Paradis is without a
doubt one of today’s most ambitious projects – a
complex confrontation between French pop and
contemporary dance music. The productions from
the duo, sitting in a crossroads of reflection and
emotion, are proof of their eclectic approach to
festive music.
1.30am / 3.15am : Sonja Moonear (Ruta5
/ Geneva — Switzerland) Dj set
Sonja Moonear, who has been an activist for over
15 years, established herself on the international
scene with her very personal style of techno and
deephouse with tribal undertones. The Swiss native
is a producer for the prestigious labels Karat and
Perlon and the co-founder of the label Ruta5 for
innovative and unformatted electro.
3.15am /5am : STEVE BUG (PokerFlat /
Berlin — germany) Dj set
This talented, multifaceted German producer is a
trendsetter who makes music non-stop. Steve Bug
started out as a DJ in the 90s and became one of the
precursors to modern minimal techno. His style is in
constant evolution from 80s house from across the
Atlantic to Berlin acid-house.

to electro and releasing singles with some of the
biggest house music record labels including Desolat,

deep-house revival, fuses electronic music with his
jazz and Latin roots. He has also collaborated with
some of Detroit’s and New York’s best producers like

Live
2.45am / 3.30am : GANGPOL & MIT (Ipecac

The Cavemen Five have long been provokers of the
Lyon scene under various band names (Lost Boys,
Buttshakers, Slow Slushy Boys and Cortona) and
today produce a very 60s garage sound. Their first
EP, Don’t Play With Me, released on the German
label Soundflat, oscillated between psychedelic
surf and wild garage punk to deliver rough, primitive
rock’n’roll.
Formed in 1986, the Monsters are as young as ever.
The Swiss group plays a mix of 60s garage punk,
trash rockabilly and primitive, wild rock. Influenced
by the pure rock’n’roll of bands like AC/DC and The
Ramones, the Monsters work on their variation of a
clean riff slapped on eurythmics which is enough to
wake the dead.
12.15AM / 1AM : MUJERES (SONES /
BarcelonA — SPAIN) Live
Formed in 2007 in Barcelona, Mujeres is today a
group that cannot be overlooked in the DIY garage
rock scene. With punk, blues and rockabilly
influences, the quartet’s second album, Soft Gems, is
the perfect mix of melodic rock tinged with a falsely
dissimulated rage.
These six crazy Londoners from the Intergalactic
Republic of Congo mix booty bass, electro and
Gnawa trance. Their chaotic, ecstatic music
can transform any space into a highly charged
dancefloor. Inspired by Fela Juti, Sun Ra and
Suicidal Tendencies, I.R.O.K.’s first album, Yé Yé God
Revolution, explores a ferocious and psychotropic
kind of afro-punk.
This visual and sonorous duo, Gangpol Und Mit,
creates a dialogue between Gangpol’s melodic electro
and Mit’s angular, colourful cartoon characters. For
their project “The 1000 People Band”, they’ve enlisted
the services of an army of virtual musicians who are
drawn, animated and projected for a synchronised
audio-video show as an extension of their last album.
4am / 4.45am : ALTO CLARK (BRK / Lyon —
France) Live
A cornerstone of the micro-music scene in Lyon, Alto
Clark composes tracks that mix rousing melodies,
heady layers and ecstatic groove for his next album.
During his intense, captivating performances, Alto
Clark offers up a unique and enchanting journey
somewhere between Dan Deacon and Lil B.

EP which is still under way. Having worked with
Douster and Jay Weed, he has constructed his own
unique style, which is resolutely harder and oriented
towards the dancefloor.
11.15pm / 12.15pm : KING KRULE (Modulor

King Krule, a.k.a. Arch Marshall, ex-Zoo Kid, is
only 18 years old and yet, he has astonishing
unconventional vocal maturity in a mix of dub, pop,
soul and rap. His second EP is mind-blowing, paving
the way for “blue-wave” which he describes as “the
aggressive side to post-punk and no-wave which is
softer and closer to blues and jazz”. Look out for the
new King on the block.
12.30AM / 1.30AM : DISCLOSURE (pmr

Disclosure is the revelation of bass music for
2012 and one of the most talented producers of
their generation. The young duo, discovered by
Pitchfork, have brought house vintage back into
the limelight and are responsible for the dancefloor
anthem Latch. With influences ranging from Burial
to Joy Orbison, Disclosure has a unique aesthetic,
mixing minimal two-step, garage bass lines and
melancholic soul vocals which will culminate with
the release of their first album next spring.

to satisfy their raging appetite for dub, synth-pop,
house and techno.
2.30AM / 4AM : MOTOR CITY DRUM ENSEMBLE
(K7 — Prime Numbers / Cologne —
germany) Dj set
Danilo Plessow, the man behind Motor City Ensemble, is
a young producer who shot out on the scene thanks to
his Raw Cuts EPs which put forward a new approach to
house music. Trained as a drummer and a lover of punk,
hip hop, soul and disco, Motor City Drum Ensemble puts
together a deep sound which is all too easy to dance to.
4am / 5am : RONE (InFiné / Paris —
France) Live
Rone is one of the most stand-out musicians in the
electronic sphere. Following on from his highlyacclaimed first album, Spanish Breakfast, he is back
with a new album, Tohu Bohu, which is magical and
subtle but also dark and complex. He churns out
unpredictable beats and rumbling bass lines.

9.30PM / 10.30PM : Mazalda - Turbo Clap
Club (!!! / Lyon - France) Live
Mazalda weaves trance, dance, raï and prog rock
into a new harmonic landscape seeking out the
powerful, grainy sound of muezzins and trucks in
Asia. The Turbo Clap Club projects bundles of neon
lights and compact blocs of music for a hypnotic
spatial party.
10.45PM / 12.15PM : Mark Ernestus
presents JERI-JERI (NDAGGA / Berlin Kaolack - GERMANY - SEnEgal) Live
Jeri-Jeri is the astonishing collaboration between
Ernestus, a renowned Berlin-based producer, and
Sabar, a group of drummers from Senegal led by the
signer Mbalax. Sabar’s traditions fuse with raging
afro-cubanism and powerful funk rock to create
music that is ancient, futuristic, hypnotic and cutting
edge all at the same time.
12.30am / 1.30am : CHARANJIT SINGH
(Bombay Connection / mumbai - Inde)
Live
1.30am / 3.30am : DJ HARVEY
(International Feel / cambridge united states) Dj set
The quintessential polyglot DJ Harvey speaks disco,
techno, house and rock. He fashions an eclectic
universe from the past two decades on the turntables.
Now considered a cult producer by the press and his
peers, Harvey is also the founder of the label Black
Cock Records. His latest project, Locussolus, is a
condensed summary of his influences, doped up for a
futuristic dancefloor.
3.30am / 5am : Daphni (Jiaolong /
Toronto - Canada) Dj set
In 2012, Dan Snaith and his group Caribou toured
the world with Radiohead. The insatiable and
unrelenting Dan seized the opportunity to mix in
every city they went to. He is back with a new
album, JIAOLONG, released under his stage
name Daphni. Rough and spontaneous, Daphni’s
compositions capture intense, magnetic energy.
Bollywood soundtrack composer, Charanjit Singh,
recorded Ten Ragas To A Disco Beat in 1982.
Charanjit has a knack for mixing ancient Indian
music movements with disco instrumentation,
creating a very dinstinct palette of acid house a few
years before the pioneers from Detroit.

9.30PM / 10.30PM : CAPE TOWN EFFECT
(Jarring Effects / Lyon - Johannesburg
— France - SOUTH AFRICA) Live
Cape Town Effects, a project put together by Jarring
Effects presents its vision for tomorrow, an abridged
version of influences ranging across hip hop, dub,
electronica, dubstep, trap and even pop. The collective
brings together French and South African beatmakers, musicians and MCs and proclaims radical
texts and bitter statements which resonate locally and
internationally.
11PM / 12AM : Evian Christ (Tri Angle /
LondON — ENGLAND) Live
1AM / 2AM : Nosaj Thing (Alpha Pup /
CalifornIA - UNITED STATES) Live
Considered one of the most promising artists of
his generations, Jason Chung a.k.a. Nosja Thing
has been soaked in electronic music and hip hop
from a very early age. He has produced Nocando,
Kendrick Lamar and Kid Cudi, the Californian now
brings us his album, Home, a instrumental hip hop
masterpiece, saturated with abstract beats, vocal
samples and 8-bit reconstructions.
2AM / 3.30AM : SPITZER (InFiné / Lyon —
France) Live
Joshua Leary, a young British producer known by the
stage name Evian Christ is the most exciting artist
of the moment. His first album, Kings And Them,
released on the dark electro label Tri Angle, churns
out a brilliant, innovative sound with a mix of hip hop
samples, ambient tones and melancholic auras.
Spitzer’s first album, The Call, produced by Agoria,
is a telescopic project where a number of the
duo’s influences come together around a profound
cinematic dizzy spell. On stage, the two brothers
build up frightening and captivating energy thanks to
their sound made up of mixed electro feedback and
heavy, circular synths.
12AM / 1AM : ELIPHINO (Somethink
Sounds / LondON - ENGLAND) Dj set
3.30AM / 5AM : Jacques Greene (Vase /
Montréal — Canada) Dj Set
Eliphino has been compared to experimental artists
such as Madlib and Tom Wrankmore. Eliphino
composes punchy hybrid music that mixes hip hop,
house and garage. The Londoner was spotted by Gilles
Peterson and today often works in collaboration and
cleverly remixes Krazy Baldhead, Simon Baker and
Marina and the Diamonds.
42
The producer Jacques Greene, originally from
Montreal, excels in the art of extracting snippets of
voices from the RnB stars of the 90s to build up a
modern combination of house and two-step. Inspired
by RnB and house music, Greene’s compositions are
subtle and airy yet still perfect for the dancefloor.

images sonores
Once again, the Images Sonores program explores new areas of artistic creation. This project aims to be
completely innovative and will be presented exclusively at the Usines Brossettes for the building’s final days
before it’s knocked down.
Images Sonores 2013 is a journey through the different fields of creation, a sort of “den of digital curiosity”
where various technologies are put together for festivalgoers’ experience of the senses. It gets the audience
involved as a spectator and participant in their interactive creations.
The program shall unfold right across the main night venue with six installation projects. It brings together
designers, illustrators, architects, graphic artists, video-makers, light designers and developers around an
unconventional scenographic installation making use of the architecture of the site (produced by LFA and the
Mooz collective). This installation, which acts as the backbone to the site, well put the three stage and two
installation spaces into perspective.
This scenographic and artistic set-up was conceptualised and produced by Laurent Graber (LFA), Antoine
Trollat (LFA), Yves Caizergues, Pierre-Marie Oullion (Arty Farty) and with the assistance of the Mooz
collective.
LFA & Mooz (Central Room Installation)
This collective, set up in 2011 at the Architecture School of Lyon, Mooz’s productions are situated on several
levels stretching from the production of geometric structures to scenographic design. Their work is based on
experimentation, taking direction in the proficiency of the design process right through to the production. Not
to be considered as an end in itself, digital technology is seen as a tool for producing advanced geometry
and above all as a possibility for taking factors such as lighting, sound and interaction into account.
Yves Caizergues & Moment Factory (Stage 1 Installation)
Moment Factory is a studio for new media and entertainment specialised in the design and production of
multimedia environments. The firm gained its reputation by combining video, lighting, architecture, sound
and special effects, taking part in over 300 performances over the world, including last September’s special
illumination of Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia.

Lazer Lazer (Stage 2 Installation)
This digital art studio transpired from a collaboration between Martial Geoffre-Rouland and the graphic
design studio uperscript2 (Pierre Delmas Bouly & Patrick Lallemand. Since 2010, LazerLazer explores the
question of sound interactivity and its representation through different interactive scenography projects that
are permanent or event-driven.
Elzo Durt (Stage 3 Outdoor Installation)
This Belgian illustrator and graphic artists, draws inspiration from vintage illustration from the old days to
showcase what characterises today’s era. Working with noisy, demanding, underground culture, Elzo Durt
creates posters, flyers and CD covers. Dreamy, urban and attractive, Elzo beats in time with his era and
transforms the universe of his contemporaries into images.
Internet Club (central room installation))
Internet Club is a collective of creative individuals from various horizons in graphics, web design and
creative advertising. Fundamentally, it is a space for collaboration, open to anybody who would like to take
part in fun projects with a shared fondness for the web.

Au bar pro des usines Brossette (accès réservé)
Nuis sonores will be the first French festival to host the London project Boiler Room at
the ‘Bar Pro’ at the Usines Brossettes (restricted access). This project, which is only a
few years old, broadcasts the planet’s top artists in exceptional small-scale locations on
their web TV. Apart from the whacky side of the project, the Boiler Room has created a
format and atmosphere where artists appear to be performing from the comfort of home. The result is a bank
of impressive statistics and some incredible sets. This means the possibility of having a famous DJ’s live feed
from home, free, for just the cost of the connection..

night 2 / the circuit
The Circuit Electronic has been christened “Night 2: The Circuit”. This change of name matches the new style
and organisation that Arty Farty has brought to this essential part of the festival. The philosophy of this new
organisation is based on our desire to build up a more intense and pertinent artistic dialogue with various
programmers and to co-construct the festival’s second night as a major representation of diversity and local
artistic emergence. For this reason, a steering committee was created for this “new circuit”, made up of club
and venue programmers from Lyon and its surrounds. The committee has met a number of times to develop
a circuit with nine stages bringing together over 50 artists who represent the exceptional dynamism of Lyon’s
music scene.

ARTY FARTY
Arty Farty, founded in Lyon in 1999, is a non-profit organisation. For the past 14 years, we
have strived to promote independent and innovative cultural practices, particularly in
music, visual arts and graphic design.
The Arty Farty team, which this year is made up of 15 full-time staff members, has
organised over 200 events in Lyon, in France and also in about 20 cities abroad including
Shanghai, Zurich, Berlin, Barcelona, Yokohama and Carthage. We actively support the
careers of six artists and carry out consultancy and artistic management projects for
businesses, communities, cultural institutions and other events. We
have built up a unique set of skills for the integration of cultural projects in an urban
environment, particularly for the use and diversion of heritage sites and the revaluation of
industrial wastelands.
In 2011, Arty Farty collaborated with the European Union to create the European Lab of
Festivals which will be known as the European Lab for Cultural Innovation as of 2013. This
recent development reflects Arty Farty’s determination to establish itself as a political
structure that is tuned in with today’s generations and keen to contribute to the creation of
cultural models for the future.
