My first year in CAMP was good and bad. Being here I met some real nice people and made good
friends. I also got to experience the life of being a university student and the life of being on my
own. The bad things were that I had a lot of trouble back home and the second semester I didn’t
concentrate as much and my grades suffered. In the end, it’s a good experience that I’m never
going to forget.
Sandra Garcia
My name is Sandra Garcia, a mother of 4 children. I can say that my experience as a first year
college C.A.M.P student was very profound but intellectual at the same time. My life isn't easy
but I managed to get a 3.8 GPA my first semester, deep, huh! Well, all I can say is if your heart
and mind are truly in the right place and you want to succeed, C.A.M.P is a great opportunity that allows you to get a head
start. I'm not saying that you won't encounter problems along the way but if you do, you can count on the C.A.M.P staff to
help you the best they can. Give it a try and you will see that even you can do it, I did. "Hice una promesa al principio de
comensar C.A.M.P, que yo iva terminar para sacar ha mis hijos adelante y lo voy ha lograr!" HECHENLE GANAS RAZA!
THANK YOU C.A.M.P...Sincerly, Sandra Garcia.
Juan DeLeon Jr.
My freshman year has had ups and downs just how I had expected before the start, but I didn't
know what ups and downs to expect. During AOP, I was anxious to begin and to be away from
home. CAMP staff also made me feel very comfortable, just what my high school counselor had
told me; and I am grateful for that. I had over-estimated the intensity of the cold weather.
Now I don't mind the negative degrees because I know there's a summer! At the end of the semester I regretted not having dropped my WRAC 125 class that dropped my G.P.A. relatively low to the rest of my classes. I
learned from my unsuccessful situation in fall semester to drop my chemistry class for good but I was still a full-time student.
The best thing that has happened to me yet in spring semester is Alternative Spring Break. I went to Merida, Yucatan, Mexico
to serve at an orphanage in which we impacted the appearance of the place as well as the lives the children. My ASB group
and the children cried as we left them to come back to MSU. For sure, I will remember this year that has taught me a lot.
Aracely Rubio
This year has been a very motivating one for me thanks to the help that CAMP has given me. I
obtained a really good G.P.A. last semester and I plan to get a better one this semester.
During this year I have learned many things from me and others around me. I became a better
person in the sense of being more responsible and more independent. I appreciate a lot of
things that I have gone through, especially ASB in Merida, Yucatan where we served at sol y luna. I will always remember
MSU and CAMP even if I don't come back anymore.

This year was like a huge roller coaster it had its ups and downs even its unexpected turns. I liked it but
even though this freshman year of college was exciting at the beginning, many things happened that left
me disappointed like people, society, academic issues, among other issues. But now I look back and
laugh because not only did these situations give me some experience about life they made me mentally
stronger. They made me realize that I can go through a lot in a short period of time. So I thank God for
those challenges and now I just await on what's to happen in the years to come.
Ulises Salas
I've enjoyed my first year at MSU. There's been many ups and downs but they've all been learning
experiences. I now have a routine and a sense of real responsibility. Even though at times it's been
hard to meet up to my responsibilities I've had help from others to accomplish them. Study Abroad
highlights my first year. The people I met to the things I seen has opened my eyes. The knowledge of college and the extended knowledge of self is what I'll take from my first year at MSU.
Juan Murillo
Thanks to CAMP’s financial help, I have been able to travel far to a wonderful University and be able
to attend it. As I walked into campus for my first day of class, the first thing I noticed was the great
diversity of students that are present at MSU. I went to schools before where the majority of the students were Hispanic and everyone had very common traits.
Now I enjoy meeting a lot of new faces and attitudes and also learning about my self-identity and who
I am as a unique person.
Diana Fernandez
This year has been without a doubt, one of the most important in my life.
Not only did I entered college but I also became independent of my family. I learned a lot
throughout this period of time on how to value myself more. I came across many people who
have become friends. As I came to MSU, I became part of the CAMP family. I sincerely thank CAMP for everything
they have done for me.
Pedro Osorio
This year has been interesting. I got to study for my first college exams and was surprised that
I ended up with a good GPA. Camp has really helped my integration to MSU.

It has been a great experience to be in the CAMP program this year, it has offered me the opportunity to pursue a career and asist
one of the best universities in the U.S. It has also been a great experience to explore the diversity here on campus through the
different careers and programs that exist here in Michigan State.
CAMP has also been like a second family; each time we meet in the monthly meeting is like being at home, since we know each
other very well and make further plans and activities to get involved in the community, at the same time get better academic performance.
Manuel Cardoza
My experience in my first year at MSU, has been hard but I have learned many good things. I
think it was hard because I had to learn how to use everything on campus. For example, I did
not know where the buildings and classrooms were. Also, I left school a long time ago so this
experience is so different. I was in HEP but as an MSU student, the homework is hard and I
have to check e-mail and be on time everyday. On the other hand, MSU has been fruitful to me. I have learned
many good things and met a lot of people from different parts of the world. This first year in MSU has been so
great
Erika Duran
My experience here in MSU has been one of the most memorable and learning one ever. I have to
say that I have grown in many aspects; being dependent, meeting numerous people, seeing new
places and simply being my own boss. When I first arrived here at MSU I thought I was going to be
homesick and not find myself around, glad to say I was wrong. Maybe I could of done better in
some things, but until this point I wouldn't change a thing here at MSU. There is not a better experience than being a MSU/
CAMP student.
I can't leave the CAMP staff out without thanking each and everyone of them, for the love and the support given to each
student, Thank you.

This first year at Michigan State was great, my academic skills increased too much compared when I
was in High School, and also in CAMP program has helped paying my first year of college and also
helped me all this academic year at MSU. I'm proud to being studying at MSU one of the Big Ten
Universities of the nation, and also that I'm representing my school (LA Joya High School), my family,
and myself, in this college.
Hilda Solis
This first year here at MSU has been a great experience for me. I have done more in this year than
I have done in the past few years. I have met so many great people along this journey and seen
many beautiful places, as well. Being here has changed the way I thinking and I am able appreciate
all the things I have.
Raul Peña
Having the opportunity to attend Michigan State University has been a dream come true for my family
and I. I am really grateful that the C.A.M.P.
program has accepted me and guided me the right way with my first year in college. It is a really great program and without them I would of never had the opportunity to go to a great university or much less succeed in one.
Thanks to everyone in the CAMP program I have been able to succeed and meet my goals. Without CAMP none of this
would of been possible. I really appreciate everything that has been done for me and my family.
Armando Rivera
My first year here at MSU was an eye-opening experience. This is no longer high school, you're
in college now. It took a while to adjust to all the changes but this year CAMP seemed to help
me through most of the changes. Through CAMP I met a lot of people from my same cultural
background, and people that I became good friends with. Trust me, this first year problems were
arising left and right, but if ever you have any questions CAMP is always there to answer those that you may have. Once
you get the hang of it, college isn't that bad. Few words of advice, study, study, study, but don't forget to have fun. Overall I enjoyed my first year and plan to return next year to continue my education here at MSU.
Miriam Ruiz
Attending MSU and being part of the CAMP program this year has really been a great experience
for me. There are numerous different reasons in which attending MSU and being in the CAMP
program has really helped me not only academically but also personally. This is an awesome
University and the CAMP is a very effectual program.

First of all I would like to thank all the CAMP Staff for all the support the have gave me. Especially
Juan B. Vazquez, he is the person that helped me out a lot and while I was here at MSU. Throughout
this first year I learned many experiences that will guide me through life and that will remain. CAMP
helped me to accomplish some of my goals in life and that is something that I will never forget. Thank you CAMP.

Every time we are faced with something new we must always find new ways to adapt to them.
Michigan State University is no exception. The experience here is unparalleled to any other experience I have had before.
This school teaches you not only the basics, but the in depth knowledge you need in order to be successful.
You find ways to enhance your communications skills making new friends you never thought you would have.
You find ways to illuminate the path that awaits you by making the best of everything you go through.
And, not only do you do the mentioned things above, but you start molding the fundamental basis of what you will be when
you graduate from here.
Pedro Gonzalez
FIRST OF ALL I WANT TO TANK GOD. MSU CAMP HAS HELPED ME A LOT, IN MANY PERSPECTIVES. SO THIS IS WHY I'M VERY TANKFUL TO ALL THE STAFF AND FACULTY.
MY EXPERIENCES WHERE GREAT EVEN THOUGH THERE WERE SOME THAT WHERE VERY
AFFECTIVE I DON'T REGRET NOTHING. HOPEFULLY NEXT YEAR MANY THINGS ARE DIFFERENT AND THIS
YEAR HAS BEEN A GREAT LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR ME. PEACE AND LOVE*DON'T HATE
Belinda Vargas
My first year at Michigan State University was great especially with the help of the CAMP Program.
State is filled with many things to do, my first week I went to explore the campus along with some of
my fellow CAMP peers. After a while I got the hang of where everything was at on campus I then went on to explore the city of
E. Lansing. I knew where the mall was at and also the movies, and since I like to party I found where the clubs where at. But I
wasn’t all about partying I came here to study and learn and that is where CAMP stepped in CAMP did many things for us;
they had informational meetings for us to help us with classes, financial aid, and internships (summer jobs). They also helped if
we needed any kind of necessities for whatever your problems were either for winter clothes to shampoo or medicine. I have to
thank CAMP they set the standard for me and without I doubt I expect to be back at MSU and hopefully be a mentor someday.

Being a freshman in college, moving to a new state, and not having any family is hard for anyone to
go through. CAMP really helped me out in many ways to get me through my first year. They helped
me with work, gave me inspiration to do what was needed, but the most important would have
to be family. I came here with nobody and ended up making a whole new family here at MSU. Some of my first experiences here would include the snow, because I have never seen any, the new friends, the new environment, and some others
that are not allowed to be discussed. All very different but also all very wonderful and fulfilling. I mean what is better than
meeting the man of your dreams and getting a whole new family all in one year. NOTHING!
Jesus Saucedo
What camp has showed me over the year is unbelievable. First we got here and got to meet a
lot of people. Camp has helped us financially giving us 250 dollars every semester is not the
much but it helps us and I'm really glad they do that then they took us to ASB to Merida, Mexico
and I had a good experience there. I'm even thinking of going back for the study abroad during winter break.
Roy Salas
Well my first year in CAMP was a great experience. I was introduced to so many things that I have
never seen or encountered before. The places we were taken the opportunities we were given are
just a few of the things that camp has to offer. Aside from that the people that you meet in CAMP
are always around you on campus, which makes this huge University seem that much smaller.
Camp gives you a really big heads up the first year, so you are just that much more ready for the next year. At first I was
really skeptical about the whole being free thing, but now that the year is about to end my skepticism has been put to rest.
All I can really say is Thank You CAMP for every thing. I would list the things that you did for me, but I never finish.
Veronica Barrios
College has been challenging for me. I was not what you would think of as an inclined academic student, until I came to MSU. I have proved to myself that I am capable of anything with steadfast determination. I arrived here knowing no one, hoping for the best. Camp has been a blessing in my life. I
have gained many qualities and values. This year will be an unforgettable year for me. It is only the
beginning to a bright future.

My experience here in Michigan State with the CAMP program has been, and forever will be, the
most memorable time I've spent away from home. Not being able to see my parents in such a
long time can be very depressing, especially when my parents are very supportive of my actions;
but I was able to make friendships that hopefully will last for a long time after college. Thanks to
CAMP I was able to travel to Merida, Yucatan! Never in my dreams could I picture myself that far into Mexico, and it was the
experience of a life time. I'm glad that I came to Michigan State, and I'm glad that there is a program like CAMP to help students in need.
Marie Louis
My Mom’s always telling me about what life is like when you don’t have an Education. Even
thought she didn’t have much money, she will always encourage me to go to college because
I’m the first one in the family to go to college. Coming here to Michigan State University was
the best thing that happened to me. I got to meet new people and some of them became my
closest friend. Last semester was a rough semester for me but I obtained a good G.P.A. and I’m trying my hardest to keep
it that way. CAMP has been my guiding guard from the day I got accepted here at MSU. I would like to thank the Staff for
making it possible for me to come here. Coming to Michigan State University was an adventure for me because I became
Independent and I learned a lot from people around me. I’m so grateful for my accomplishment and I owe its all to CAMP.
Thank You to All the CAMP Staff
Esmeralda Muñoz
The first year here in MSU, has been one of the most important opportunities that I’ve had
because I have accomplished one of my dreams. Being a CAMP student is a good opportunity
to continue with the education because the CAMP STAFF is very helpful in many ways. During
this year I’ve experienced many positives things with the people of different cultures. One of
the experiences that stand out the most has being Alternative Spring Break, my trip to Puebla, Mexico. My freshmen year
has been very exciting. I have learned how to be successful in a diverse campus and with so many wonderful people.
Sion Paredes
Coming to Michigan State with the C.A.M.P. program has been a great opportunity. They do a
great job keeping my self and many other students focused on doing a great job in and out of
the classroom. CAMP has helped me to make the best of my freshman year here at this big
university where it can be easy to be distracted and even alienated. Another aspect of C.A.M.P.
that I enjoyed is the sense of togetherness, in making sure students are taken care of and many
of the fieldtrips put together were great.
Blanca Guzman
This year has been a very motivating one for me thanks to the help that CAMP has given me.

This year has been a year of revelations, a year of finding a purpose in my life. C.A.M.P and MSU
has been an up-lifting experience for me. Since the first day of orientation I knew CAMP was going
to be there for me as well as my fellow Mexican companions. CAMP facilitated the transition as a
Mexican MSU freshman. My ASB experience was amazing it was one of my best week yet.
I really enjoyed being back in Mexico, and also giving back to my Mexican community. Overall I really feel blessed to be in
this position, getting my self-ahead.
Isael Flores
My name is Isael Flores when I first got here to Michigan State University I was afraid, the
C.A.M.P Staff helped me get over my fears of not being able to do the work. They helped me
get organized so I could be more effective when it came to do my work. Now my experience
has been great I have meant a lot of people and made some new friends.
Liza Saenz
My first year in college was incredible. I came to a new diverse place where I knew no one and made it
out alive. I joined an organization called CHE and I have academically challenged myself to do great in
my classes. “Growing up is hard to do” the toughest words I learned here. A year has passed and I look
back at my new life and see friendship, determination, and faith the three words that most describe me.
Jeremy Cavazos
My first year of college was outstanding. I took off five years after high school to work and
help my mother with her bills. It got to the point that I needed to think of my future and a
career, so when I heard about CAMP I had to try it. I was not a very good student in high
school and I did not try that hard even though I had the ability and potential. After working
and living in the real world after high school I realized that I did not want to break my back
the rest of my life for change compared to the real money I could be making with an education. I had to weigh
out my options and I figured that I could help my family better from East Lansing than in the streets in Holland. I knew that if I stayed there the street life would bring me down like so many of my friends. So I came to
school focused, confident, and prepared to succeed. With this mind frame I can not fail. Most important is to
be focused; there are a lot of distractions in college. So with all that I have been through I owe so much to
CAMP. If it were not for CAMP I do not know where I would be. Thinking positively I would be working a
nine to five every day just to get by. But in reality I might have end up in prison or dead. For these reasons and
more I am thankful to CAMP and all of the CAMP staff for their hard work and dedication. I could have wrote
so much more but they only wanted a paragraph, so I hope this makes people think about their future and the
choices that they have.

Hi. My name is Ruben Rivas and I came from Detroit, Michigan. My goal is to
achieve a degree in Criminal Justice. My objective is to complete all my goals.
My first semester with CAMP and at MSU was great!
Rafael Montano
My experience here at MSU has been incredible. The people are great and the environment is
beautiful, MSU has been everything I expected and much more. Perhaps now I can pass on my
knowledge to friends and family back home ”That College isn’t just for the white American”.
Thanks to CAMP I’ve had this wonderful opportunity to pursue my life long dreams and Be who I want to Be. I wouldn’t
trade my experience for the nothing.
Robert Vigil
I am very thankful to the CAMP program for everything they have done for me. With out the
program I may have never had the opportunity to come to college and better my education.
College has been an experience I will never forget. I have learned so much in my first year that I
can only be anxious and impatient to learn what will be offered in the next few years. I wish that
I could spread the word about the MSU CAMP to much more of my friends back home I believe it would help them as much
as they helped me. Again I would like to express my gratitude to the CAMP staff and everyone who has helped me through
my freshman year, they have prepared me for the future to come.
Brenda Villareal
sabiendo leer no lee.”
me aproximo a mi afán. ¡Gracias!

This year has been very special to me and CAMP has made that possible. The staff was always
there when I had a question or need help on something so I really appreciate there help and support. I think MSU overall has had a great impact in my life and it will be something that I will always
have with me.

First of all, I'd like to give thanks to my family, especial thanks to my mami for giving me her support
and believing in me. Also I'd like to thank CAMP/HEP staff for their support/advice and you all know
who you are those that have been with me on my ups and downs, and other faculty on campus,
thank you all so much. All of you have a special place in my heart. Being here at MSU has helped
me become a better person, being involved in the Chicano/Latino community, which I really enjoy doing. But a word of advice, for next CAMP classes to come: "being here is not easy, every year it gets harder, but if you put your mind to it , and
with the help of family and friends you'll reach your goals.

After two kids and long nights of studying, I've finally made it half way through my journey of education. My name is Haida Lopez and I am receiving my undergrad degree in Family Community
Services. Who ever said dreams don't come true? Thanks to the support from my wonderful
husband Mario Martinez, I am graduating. Being here at MSU has been a trip. Graduating is a
bittersweet experience. What I'm going to miss the most is seeing my fellow CAMP students of 2001. Good luck to
everyone and may life take you in the direction you want to go.

I advise that you always smile regardless of how cloudy it is. And take a minute to think what that
smile has done for others and what other smiles have done for you. A smile is contagious make sure
you start a epidemic before you think about the next great things you are about to do in your life.

The CAMP program has given me the opportunity to accomplish my career goals. The program took
me in my freshman year and mentor and guided me every year of my curriculum. They made sure that I
had access to resources on campus and out side of campus necessary to succeed in one of the biggest
universities in the nation. Because of the program I am graduating with a Supply Chain Management
degree and have ensure a job with Hewlett Packard in Houston, Texas.
I want to sincerely thank the CAMP Program and its staff for believing in my potential to succeed at Michigan State
University.

During my undergraduate career at Michigan State University I have acquired and developed new
skills that will be essential for my future goals. As a graduating senior, I am proud to have broken
the vicious cycle of the lack of opportunities that existed in my family due to our migrant farm worker
status. My sister is now a college freshman and my younger brother is looking forward to a positive
collegiate experience. The Xicano/Latino community and my family played a great role in my success as a student. Without the support of the Xicano /Latino community, my days at Michigan State University would
not have been as fun and memorable as they were. More importantly the presence and support of mi familia guided me
through all of the obstacles. Due to the quality of resources afforded to me, I can now continue to serve my community
on a much greater scale.

Looking back at my four years here, at MSU, I am at a loss for words to commemorate this time and
chapter in my life. I have had a tremendous amount of support from my family, friends and of
course the CAMP staff. I am grateful to every person who has added to the person I am. The
college experience has opened my eyes to so much. It is hard to imagine what I would have done
with my life, had I not come to college. I am so fortunate for the opportunity to study here. College has been a struggle,
but it was worth it all. The main truth I have learned from college has been that we are the designers of our lives. We
have the power to create change and be changed by others, if let ourselves.
