Archivist and Director,
Jewish Archives and Historical Society of Edmonton and Northern Alberta
Responsibilities:
The Archivist oversees the acquisition, appraisal, processing, preservation and promotion of the
holdings of the Jewish Archives and Historical Society of Edmonton and Northern Alberta
(JAHSENA).
With responsibility for the direction of the archives, its volunteers and contract staff, the Archivist
will be required to work closely with the lay leadership to develop programmes and build
partnerships with other organizations in order to outreach to the larger Jewish and non-Jewish
communities.
Requirements:
Archival Studies degree, Library Science degree, or equivalent experience;
Minimum 3-5 years of work experience in an established archives, performing all basic
archival functions;
Experience directing and supervising staff and volunteers in a collaborative environment;
Experience with some or all of: budgets, grant writing, fundraising, strategic planning,
project management and programming;
Thorough understanding of archival principles and professional practice and standards,
eg. RAD (Rules for Archival Description);
Good understanding of Jewish culture and history as well as general Canadian and Alberta
history;
Excellent written and oral communication skills; experience in editing an asset.
This is a part-time, permanent position to a maximum of 80 hours per month with no benefits.
The Director will spend 10% of his or her time on Administration and 90% on Archival activities.

“Bechukotai in a Nutshell …

G_d promises that if the people of
Israel will keep His commandments,
they will enjoy material prosperity
and dwell secure in their homeland. But
He also delivers a harsh “rebuke,”
warning of the exile, persecution and
other evils that will befall them if they
abandon their covenant with Him.
"Where is God?"
Nevertheless, “Even when they are in
the land of their enemies, I will not
cast them away; nor will I ever abhor
them, to destroy them and to break My
covenant with them; for I am the Lord
their G_d.”
To try to speak or philosophize about the realm
of God is utterly impossible. Our minds cannot
even begin to operate in a realm where neither
space nor time exist. We do not have the
vocabulary to express the elements of such a
domain. This is but one reason why God is
absolutely beyond our understanding. All this is
well expressed by an anecdote recorded in the
Midrash (Tehilim 103:5):
One of the ways in which God is holy is in the
fact that He exists in a realm where neither
space nor time exist. The Prophecy says of God,
"He dwells in eternity on high, Him name is
holy" (Isaiah 57:15). Eternity is where neither
space nor time exist. God is in this unimaginable
domain, and is therefore called "holy."
The Parshah concludes with the rules
on how to calculate the values of
different types of pledges made to
G‑d, and the mitzvah of tithing
produce and livestock.

In Parshat Bechukotai, we read about
the promises that G-d gives us if we
keep the Torah and do the mitzvot:

never forget or abandon them.

that is very far off, way beyond our world. I will
ask you about something that is very close to
you. Where is your soul?"
The philosopher was puzzled. He replied, "I
really do not know."
Rabbi Gamaliel said, "Then your words are
mere wind. You do not even know the place of
something that is actually a part of you. How
can you question me about something that is
beyond understanding?"
What Rabban Gamaliel was telling the
philosopher is that there are some things that
the mind cannot even begin to grasp. To ask
questions about these things is not wisdom, but
foolishness. To ask where God is, is like asking
where is thought or love or goodness. There are
things outside the physical domain, and to
apply physical terms to them is to lose sight of
their true meaning.

T
he current site of Coal Creek Golf Resort has coal mining
activity since the turn of the 19th century.
