Built in 1960 the Handlebar J (then called “Wild
Bill’s”) was considered to be “out in the boonies”
by most city slickers. The only other places out
here were Drinkwater’s liquor store and a Tastee
Freeze. The HBJ was a rip roarin’ place that was
home to lots of rowdy cowboys, including
original owner “Wild Bill”, who’s crazy antics are
still evident by the bullet hole he accidentally
shot in the pole on the dance floor by twirling
and dropping his loaded 45 pistol. Back then
the clientele’s horses were tied to hitching posts
out front while inside they listened to a then
unknown Waylon Jennings playing and singing
for tips just trying to make a living.
After working for George (Handlebar moustache
wearing) and Joanie (“J”) Lautz; original HBJ
owners) for 9 years, Gwen and Brick Herndon
bought Handlebar J in 1975, (Brick passed away
in 1981) and Gwen has single-handedly kept
the place going all these years. The Herndon
Brothers Band, formed by Ray and Ron in 1986,
(two of Gwen’s sons), provides the music while
other son Rick keeps up the books. The HBJ and
it’s music are so well known that occasional visits
by Vince Gill, Blake Shelton, Lyle Lovett, Toby
Keith, Matthew McConaughey, Vince Vaugh, Jessi
Colter and other celebrities are not uncommon.
In 2007 the HBJ and the Herndon family
were inducted into the Arizona Music and
Entertainment Hall of Fame. “Handlebar J Day”
was inducted by Scottsdale mayor Sam Campana
on October 9, 2000 for being one of Scottsdale’s
western landmarks. Being a favorite spot for
locals as well as out of towners, there’s a story
behind every cowboy hat hanging in the rafters
and name carved in the bar.
The Herndon Family would like to thank you for
your loyal support throughout the years.
