Solemnity: Ascension of Our Lord
Solemnity: Ascension of Our Lord May 8, 2016 “Now, once for all he has appeared at the end of the ages, to take away sin by his sacrifice…… after the judgment, Christ, offered once to take away the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to take away sin, but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him” — Hebrews 9-10 St. Michael Parish — 14327 Highland, Orland Park, IL —708-349-0903 Fax: 708-364-1257 www.saintmike.com follow us on Facebook Voice of Saint Michael May 8, 2016 From Your Pastor Rev. Paul C. Burak This weekend we are celebrating our parish second grade First Communions. What innocence, what trust, what excitement these young people show. How sad that we all get so grown-up that we lose so much of what we thought and felt on the day of each of our First Communion. May we find again some of that awe and wonder. God bless these First Communicants, their parents and their teachers and catechists. These First Communion Masses are the highlight of my priesthood. What an honor to be pastor to all these relationships with Jesus. This weekend we also celebrate Mother’s Day. Take the time to thank your Mom for being your Mom, and don’t forget to also thank your Spiritual Mother – the Blessed Virgin Mary. One of the best ways to honor Mary is to sign up for Adoration for an hour with her Son. Please call Tom Wrobel (708-269-7898) or the parish office and leave your name and phone number. We need to have all the hours covered so we can begin our Adoration Chapel in June. Finally, last weekend we celebrated the 25th anniversary of ordination to diaconate for Mike McDonough. THANK YOU MIKE AND DONNA FOR ALL THE LOVE AND SERVICE YOU HAVE SHARED WITH US THESE PAST 25 YEARS. WE ARE A BETTER PARISH BECAUSE YOU ARE PART OF US. MAY GOD RETURN A HUNDREDFOLD TO YOUR FAMILY ALL THE LOVE YOU HAVE GIVEN TO OUR PARISH FAMILY. YOU HAVE MADE A PROFOUND DIFFERENCE TO OUR LIVES AND FOR THAT WE PRAISE AND GLORIFY OUR GOD FOR THE GIFT YOU ARE TO US. --Fr. Paul 2 Voice of Saint Michael May 8, 2016 Jubilee Year of Merc May 8, 2016 Ascension of our Lord As the liturgical year—and this Jubilee Year of Mercy—unfold, we reflect on what Jesus’ ascension meant for the first disciples and means now for us. Stay in Jerusalem, Jesus had instructed, awaiting “the promise of the Father. In a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:4–5, 8). Despite Jesus’ absence, they wait “with great joy . . . continually in the temple praising God” (Luke 24:52–53). But as we join them, waiting and worshiping, the enduring challenge—theirs and ours—is delivered by “two men in white” (Acts 1:10). In every age, disciples must stop looking at the sky, head down the mountain, and go back into the world, “commissioned,” says Pope Francis, “to announce the mercy of God, the beating heart of the Gospel,” inviting everyone to find “in our parishes, communities, associations and movements . . . wherever there are Christians . . . an oasis of mercy” (Misericordiae Vultus, 12). The parishes of Orland and Tinley Park are collaboratively working to celebrate this Jubilee Year. On the second Monday of each month we host a Mercy Monday event. These events rotate among the parishes and include times of prayer, reflection and putting mercy in action. Our next event is …. “The Way of Jesus” Presenter: John Donahue Grossman May 9, 7-8:30 PM at SS. What does it mean to follow Jesus? John utilizes biblical texts, commentaries, and wisdom of scripture scholars, as he guides us on a journey back in time to rediscover Jesus’ identity and essential teachings. Each of the 4 gospels has a unique perspective or paths to discipleship. John will also speak about the coporal works of mercy and Mary (disciple of Jesus’ merciful way). John Grossman is a gifted speaker who challenges his audiences to reach out in love to the least among us. He is Director of Retreats at LaSalle Manor Retreat Center in Plano and a Board Member of Outside da Box. God’s Word Calls Us to be Merciful 3 Voice of Saint Michael May 8, 2016 PENTECOST NOVENA— PRAYING FOR THE SPIRIT’S GIFTS The gifts of the Holy Spirit help us live as faithful Christians. These days before Pentecost we can pray for a renewal of the gifts of the Holy Spirit we received at baptism. According to one tradition, the disciples gathered for the nine days between Jesus’ ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. In imitation of these days of prayer, Christians have fashioned the novena, nine days of prayer for a specific purpose. The original Novena was prayed from Ascension Thursday to Pentecost. Below are nine scripture verses to guide your reflection upon the gifts of the Holy Spirit as you pray the Pentecost Novena. A Mother's Prayer Day 1: Faith, Hope and Charity—Philippians 1:6 Day 2: Knowledge—Psalm 62:5 Day 3: Understanding—Isaiah 29:24 Day 4: Wisdom—Wisdom 7:15 Day 5: Fortitude—Psalm 27:14 Day 6: Reverence—Isaiah 29:23 Day 7: Counsel—Isaiah 30:21 Day 8: Awe (Fear of the Lord)—Isaiah 29:23 Day 9: Come Holy Spirit—John 14:26 Breathe in Me, O Holy Spirit Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy. Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy. Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, that I may love only what is holy. Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, that I may defend all that is holy. Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy. Amen. Happy Mothers’ Day to all who Love Us With a Mother’s Love. St. Augustine (354-430) 4 Voice of Saint Michael May 8, 2016 The Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Our Lady of Fatima Coming to St. Michael — Monday, May 23rd Blessed John Paul II renewed the call to all of the Christian faithful to evangelize in the spirit of the Second Vatican Council and Pope Paul VI. “No believer in Christ, no institution of the Church can avoid this supreme duty: to proclaim Christ to all peoples.” Pope Benedict XVI renewed the Church’s call to the New Evangelization. He called for the “re-proposing” of the Gospel to those regions “still awaiting a first evangelization” and to those regions where the roots of Christianity are deep but that have experienced “a serious crisis” of faith due to secularization. In keeping with the mission of the new evangelization, The Blue Army of Our Lady of Fatima* is bringing her message to St. Michael Parish. It is a call to conversion and a prayerful sanctification of souls that will bring peace to our hearts and our world. To underscore the importance of the message of Fatima in today’s society, Pope Francis consecrated his papacy to Our Lady of Fatima on her feast, May 13, 2013. On October 13th of that same year, he consecrated the World to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. On May 23rd the Archdiocesan Pilgrim Statue of Our Lady of Fatima will arrive at St. Michael parish at 8 AM, beginning a day of prayer and adoration. The statue was blessed by Bishop Venancio of Leira, Fatima, then the International President of the Blue Army. It was also blessed by Cardinal Josef Mindzenty. The statue was sent to Chicago in 1972 and devotion in its presence has proven to be the catalyst for renewed interest in the message of Fatima, while exposing new generations of Catholics to the message and devotion to Our Lady. The schedule for May 23rd in St. Michael Church: 8:00 AM Mass Eucharistic Adoration throughout the Day Rosary recited every hour of the Day 3:00 PM - The Divine Mercy Devotion 7:00 PM – Closing Benediction On April 11, 2015, the Vigil of Divine Mercy Sunday, Francis stood before the Holy Door in St. Peter's Basilica and announced an historic event: an extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, which opened on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception 12/8/15 and will run through the Solemnity of Christ the King on November 20, 2016. "Jesus Christ is the face of the Father's mercy," Pope Francis said. "Merciful like the Father" is the motto he chose for this Jubilee Year. Francis believes God’s Mercy is the answer to evil. "Here, then, is the reason for the Jubilee: because this is the time for mercy. It is the favorable time to heal wounds, a time not to be weary of meeting all those who are waiting to see and to touch with their hands the signs of the closeness of God, a time to offer everyone the way of forgiveness and reconciliation." On May 23rd, praying with Our Lady of Fatima, our Popes, past and present, and St. Faustina Kowalska, we, too will seek God’s Divine Mercy that will bring conversion of hearts and peace to our world. *The Blue Army of Our Lady of Fatima, known as the World Apostolate of Fatima, is an international association of Catholic faithful who have as their purpose "the promotion of the authentic teaching of the Roman Catholic Church, adherence to the tenets of the Gospel, the personal sanctification of adherents through faithful devotion to the Message of Fatima and the promotion of the common good by spreading the Message of Fatima.” 5 Voice of Saint Michael May 8, 2016 2016 FIRST The Faith Community of St. Michael Parish Isabella Adeszko Aidan Aguayo Alexandra Ayala Nicholas Barrett Samantha Barry Kevin Bartolotta Brayden Basic Luke Basiorka Olivia Batus Brennen Baxter Henry Beeson Emily Bickel Natalia Biela Bradley Bittner Michael Boll Estelle Brownlee Emma Canerday Brandon Castillo Mackenzie Conry Lucille Cosme Hunter Covolo Jake Crotty Ava Cruz Elayna Davidson Luke Detampel Ava Dill Meghan Donnell Norah Doyle Drew Drzonek John Ellis Kelleen Ellis Sarah Enright Shanna Eppenstein Andrew Faifer Ciara Fennessy Matthew Forbes Thomas Fotsis Brady Gomez 6 Gabriela Gomez Diane Gonzalez Isaac Gonzalez Nathan Gonzalez Madalyn Grenda Peter Hajdani Thomas Harlin Noah Highfill Wyatt Hochgraber Thomas Hollowell Cecilia Hosty Luke Hosty Leah Huie Matthew Iannitelli Evaline Ilic Gabriel Jacquez Caden Jobb Joseph Judeh Emma Kanagy Jamie Keenan Keria Kehlert Cate Kelly Brian Kobel Elsie Koch Voice of Saint Michael May 8, 2016 COMMUNICANTS welcomes these children to share in the table of the Lord! Certainly, we were very pleased that we took him up on it. The theme of the movie is exactly what the title suggests. The main character, Grace Wesley, risks her teaching position to stand up for what she truly believes: the right to say the name of Jesus in her Honors Social Studies class in an historical frame of reference when asked a question about Jesus. The student, Hayley, wishes to know about the resemblance of Gandhi and Martin Luther King's non-violence to that of Jesus. The school board determines that unless she apologize for "teaching religion in a public school," she would receive the worst possible punishment, namely, being fired and having her teaching certificate revoked. If she would adhere to their demands, she would be exonerated. This has an emotional impact that affects the entire community. The line is drawn between her supporters and those who are not. She is not the only one willing to sacrifice something for her strong position. So is a young Chinese man who becomes Christian and is disowned by his non-Christian father as a result. Hayley's parents are part of the group demanding the teacher's dismissal. They, themselves, are non-believers. Grace sees this an assault on God. For a while, Hayley obeys her parents and does not speak to Ms. Wesley, but upon discovering her deceased brother's bible with numerous personal notes in it, she begins to read it. Unbeknown to her, the brother she strongly respected and loved had been a true believer all along despite his parents' inclinations. Feeling that this gives her a strong message about his belief in God and what stance she should take, she then goes against her parent's demands by openly supporting Ms. Wesley. Interestingly enough, Tom Endler, the only lawyer willing to take on this seemingly impossible court case, is himself a non-believer but is positively affected by the strength, courage and tenaciousness of this young teacher. Although this movie may not be in the local theaters anymore, we would highly recommend renting it for you and your families to view together. --Tony and Eileen Cocco YOUNG ADULTS The Young Adults had a great time at their service day with the Missionaries of Charity at their soup kitchen on the West Side. May 8, 2016 Masses for the Week — May 7th through May 14th 4:30 PM 6:00 PM 7:30 AM Sunday 9:00 AM 10:30 AM 12:00 PM (Spanish) --> 1:30 PM 5:30 PM 6:30 AM Monday 8:00 AM 6:30 AM Tuesday 8:00 AM 6:30 AM Wednesday 8:00 AM 6:30 AM Thursday 8:00 AM 6:30 AM Friday 8:00 AM Saturday 8:30 AM Saturday All Masses are for all mothers Fr.
