We start our auction this time with three works of contemporary art. The first two lots are by artists from the Jendela group: Alfi's Provokator (1993) and Yunizar's Ruined Party (1998), while the third is Ay Tjoe Christine's lithograph dating from 1993. Various other works of contemparary art are also offered, such as Rudi Mantofani's Tumpa Hawa 2002 (lot #127). Two works by Sri Astari, who is now the Indonesian Ambassador to Bulgaria, are also in this auction: Shame, Insecurity, Denial, Win or Lose, Fear, Addiction (lot #125) and Recovery Prayer Beads (lot #144). It has become a tradition that our auction is highlighted with works of art with high historical value.Four artworks by Lee Man Fong (lots #102-104), date from as early as the 1940s, and attest to the artist's versatility in style and technique. Three drawings dated between 1979 and 1981 (lots #182-184, by S. Sudjojono, Indonesia's modern art pioneer, offer glimpses into the artist's life and thoughts. Two sketches dating from the 1940s, a divan, a typewriter and writing desk that belonged to the late Sudjana Kerton (lots #160-163), are material culture evidence of the artist's life. A number of great works of Balinese Art are also featured in this auction. Sepasang Kekasih by Dewa Biang Raka (lot #077) was painted with the typical subdued aesthetic of the Pengosekan style, while the choice of subject matter/theme might reflect the artist's female gender and sensitivity. Two paintings of owls and ants by Dewa Putu Mokoh (lots #081 & 052) are telling of the artist's accentric perseonality and unique observations. Ketut Ginarsa's depiction of Dewi Saraswati (lot #087) clearly shows the artist's admiration of the goddess of knowledge, arts, learning and wisdom. In this auction we also have a number of wonderful artworks by foreign artists who worked in Indonesia. In his Kebyar (1946) (lot #093), Auke Sonnega expressively depicts the energetic movements of a Balinese dancer. Theo Meier's portrayal of Kan Keo Expecting a Baby (lot #072) seems to have been painted with extra care and patience. Donald Friend's fantastic Sudden Storm (lot #081) really captures the mood and sensation that we experience when a monsoon thunderstorm suddenly hits the ground. April 15th, 2016 would have been Arie Smit's 100th birthday. Unfortunately, he passed away suddenly on March 23rd, 2016. In memory of the Dutch born Indonesian artist, we present two paintings by him in our auction: At The Temple's Gate (1994) (lot #090) and Temple Late Afternoon (2004) (lot #185), which is our final/ closing lot of the auction. Certainly many other beautiful, interesting and strong artworks by Hasan Djaafar, Wakidjan, Leo Eland, Jeihan Sukmantoro, Amrus Natalsya, Sapto Hoedoyo, Krijono, Erica Hestu Wahyuni, Syahrizal Koto and many other artists that are featured in our auction. We hope that among the pieces that we offer, there will be artworks that make meaningful connections with our clients, current and future. Please enjoy our preview exhibitions, and then participate in bidding for your favorite works at our auction on May 22th, 2016. Amir Sidharta Sidharta Auctioneer 5 Guide for Bidders Bidding at the Auction The following pages are designed to give any prospective bidders useful information on how to bid and buy at Sidharta Auctioneer's Fine Art auction (the "Auction" or the "Sale"). 1. BEFORE THE AUCTION Estimates The estimated price range of each lot, printed below the description of each lot, is intended solely to be a guide for prospective buyers. Any bid between the high and the low estimated price range would, in our opinion, offer a fair chance of success in the purchase of the lot. However, all lots, depending on the degree of competition, can realise prices either above or below the estimates. Estimates do not include the Buyer's Premium. Reserves The reserve is a confidential minimum price the seller is willing to accept in the sale of the lot. If the highest bid of the lot fails to reach the reserve, the lot will not be sold. Pre-Auction Viewing/Condition of Lots Prior to the Auction, viewings will be open to public and free of charge. The condition of each lot is described in the condition report which Sidharta Auctioneer prepared with reasonable effort and good professional manner. We strongly encourage interested buyers to request these condition reports and to examine the lots properly. The absence of reference to the condition of a lot in the catalog description does not imply that the lot is free from faults or imperfections. 2. THE AUCTION Buyer’s Terms The Auction is governed by the Terms for Buyers and Sales Terms printed in this catalog. These Terms apply to all aspects of the relationship between Sidharta Auctioneer and actual and prospective bidders and buyers. Anyone considering bidding in the Auction should read and understand them carefully. They may be amended by way of notices posted in the saleroom or by way of announcement made by the auctioneer. Bidding at the Auction Registration is required for all bidders 30 minutes prior to the start of the Auction. The identity of bidders will be verified. Bids may be executed in person by the use of paddle or by telephone through Sidharta Auctioneer's staff during the Auction, or in writing prior to the Sale. The Auction speeds vary, but usually average between 50-60 lots per hour. We reserve the right to refuse admission to the premises or participation in any auction and to reject any bid. Consecutive and Responsive Bidding The auctioneer may open the bidding on any lot by placing a bid on behalf of the seller. The auctioneer may further bid on behalf of the seller, by placing consecutive or responsive bids for a lot, up to amount of the reserve. The lots are auctioned in consecutive numerical order with video image or any manner of display we consider appropriate. Bidding is done in Indonesian Rupiah in incremental price increase. The auctioneer accepts bids from those present in the saleroom, from telephone bidders, or by absentee bids left with us in advance of the Auction. 6 Bidding Increments Bidding generally opens below the low estimates and progresses in the following increments: Rp. 1.000.000,- Rp. 3.000.000,- Rp. 5.000.000,- Rp. 10.000.000,- Rp. 20.000.000,- Rp. 30.000.000,- Rp. 50.000.000,- Rp. 100.000.000,- Rp. 200.000.000,- Rp. 300.000.000,- Rp. 500.000.000,- Rp. 1.000.000.000,- to Rp. 3.000.000,- by Rp. 200.000,to Rp. 5.000.000,- by Rp. 300.000,to Rp. 10.000.000,- by Rp. 500.000,to Rp. 20.000.000,- by Rp. 1.000.000,- to Rp. 30.000.000,- by Rp. 2.000.000,- to Rp. 50.000.000,- by Rp. 3.000.000,- to Rp. 100.000.000,- by Rp. 5.000.000,- to Rp. 200.000.000,-by Rp. 10.000.000,to Rp. 300.000.000,-by Rp. 20.000.000,to Rp. 500.000.000,-by Rp. 30.000.000,to Rp. 1.000.000.000,- by Rp. 50.000.000,and above: according to auctioneer's direction The auctioneer may change the increments during the course of the Auction at his or her discretion. Bidding in person To bid in person at the Auction, registered bidders should collect their numbered paddle before the Auction begins. Proof of identity references and registration will be required to collect paddles. The paddle is used to indicate your bids to the auctioneer during the Sale. Successful buyers of any lot should ensure that their paddle is visible to the auctioneer and that it is their number that is called out as the successful bidder. Should there be any doubts as to price or buyer, the bidder should draw the auctioneer's attention to it immediately. All lots sold will be invoiced to the name and address in which the paddle has been registered and cannot be transferred to other names and addresses. Please do not mislay your paddle; in the event of loss please inform the sales clerk immediately. At the end of the Sale, please return your paddle to the registration desk. Absentee Bids Prospective buyers who are unable to attend the Auction can submit absentee bids using Written Bid form that can be found on page 139 of this catalog. This service is confidential. Absentee Bids can be in the form of a Written Bid or Telephone Bid. The Absentee Bid type should be indicated on the form. Absentee bids must be confirmed before the Sale by letter or fax. To ensure satisfactory service to bidders, please ensure that we receive your bids at least 24 hours before the Sale. In the Written Bid form you MUST specify the lot number, the description of the item and the top limit. Unlimited or unspecified bids such as instructions to (buy) will not be accepted. Although the Top Limit is denoted, lots will always be bought as cheaply as is consistent with other bids and the reserves. In the case of identical bid limits, the earliest bid received will take precedence. Bidding by Telephone For prospective buyers who are unable to attend the Auction but would like to participate in the Auction remotely through the moderation of Sidharta Auctioneer's staff, it is possible to bid on the telephone on lots. An administrative surcharge of Rp. 300.000 will be applied to successful phone bids. Bilingual staff is available to execute bids for you. Successful Bids The fall of the auctioneer's hammer indicates the final bid (the "Hammer Price"). The auctioneer's will call out and record the paddle number of the buyer. If your written bid is successful, you will be notified immediately after the Sale by post. Bidding may be reopened at the auctioneer's discretion. Currency Conversion Since bidding is carried out in Indonesian Rupiah, a currency converter may be operated, based on the most recently available rates of exchange quoted to us by Bank Indonesia applicable on the date of the Auction. The pieces show that he was a versatile artist who was not only capable of working with various media, including water color, pastels as well as ink, on paper, but also different aesthetic genres or styles. 74 102 Lee Man Fong (Guangzhou, Canton, China, 1913 - Jakarta, Indonesia, 1988) Balinese Woman ca. 1960s watercolor on paper 47 x 30 cm signed (lower right) : "M.F.Lee" Rp. 24 - 36.000.000 75 103 Lee Man Fong (Guangzhou, Canton, China, 1913 - Jakarta, Indonesia, 1988) Hair Combing and Portrait of a Man 1948 pastel on paper 62 x 47 cm signed and dated (lower right) : "M.F.Lee 2.11.48 and back (lower middle): "M.F.Lee 1940" Rp. 30 - 45.000.000 76 This lot includes two works by Lee Man Fong. The main image is a pastels on paper piece depicting two women, one combing the hair of the other, dating from 1948. On the reverse of this work, is a pastel portrait of a man, dating from 1940. The piece provides evidence that the artist used the reverse of the earlier artwork for the later work. Further study might be able to reveal the artist's frame of mind when he decided to do this, and make us understand better the life and thoughts of artists during that time. 104 Lee Man Fong (Guangzhou, Canton, China, 1913 - Jakarta, Indonesia, 1988) Three Balinese Women on a Porch 1948 watercolor on paper 55 x 72 cm signed and dated (lower right): " M.F.Lee Adam '48" Rp. 28 - 42.000.000 This unique artwork depicting three Balinese women interacting on a porch of a house, was actually painted in Amsterdam in 1948 and therefore most likely was painted entirely from memory. In 1946, at the time of the Indonesian revolutionary struggle for Independence, the Netherlands Indies Lieutenant Governor General Van Mook granted the artist a Malino Scholarship, which sent him to study art in Amsterdam. There, for a brief period of time, he experimented with deformation of figures, and this piece is one of its few examples. 77 105 Sugantika “Lekung”, Ketut (b. Abdullah" Rp. 30 - 45.000.000 Basoeki Abdullah was well-known for his beautiful paintings of women and idealized portraiture. The collection of President Sukarno includes fifty-nine of his paintings, making him the most represented artist in that renowned collection. In the 1960s, he became the court painter of the Kingdom of Thailand. He painted the portraits of many world leaders and dignitaries, as well as prominent personalities, particularly members of the elite in Southeast Asia. The painting entitled Two Young Women seems to date from the 1940s, when the artist had already started to gain a name for his art, but had not yet established himself as a portrait artist. During this time, his art was more spontaneous, free spirited and fun. The way he applied his signature on this painting is also slightly different from the other paintings from that time. While his signature on his other paintings dating from the 1940s are signed horizontal following more or less a straight line, the signature on this painting seems to follow a upturned curve which suggest a sense of joy on the part of the artist. It is certainly quite a unique painting. 113 Property of the family of the late SudjanaKerton lots #160-163 160 Kerton, Sudjana (Bandung, W. Sudjojono's drawings often serve as a kind of personal diary entries, documenting his life, thoughts, as well as his anxieties. The first drawing, entitled Cikini Hospital, 1980 (lot #182), reveal Sudjojono's admiration for the 19th century Javanese artist Raden Saleh, whose mansion is currently part of the Cikini Hospital in Menteng, Central Jakarta. This is particularly interesting in understanding Sudjojono's view on the nineteenth century artist. During his early artistic career, as heclearly stated in his book, Seni Loekis, Kesenian dan Seniman ("The Art of Painting, Art and Artists") (Yogyakarta: Indonesia Sekarang, 1946). Sudjojono viewed Raden Saleh as an artist who was trapped in the complacent yet obscure times of the nineteenth century. Sudjojono considered that reflecting the times which seemed to lack determination and clarity, Raden Saleh and his art was also not yet able to make a resolute political not artistic stance. However, he never denied that Raden Saleh was a great artist and actually was very proud of him, his art as well as his estate, which became Jakarta's zoological park from the 1860s to the 1960s. He even hailed the decision of the Japanese occupational authority to rename the zoo as the "Raden Saleh Park". 126 As Sudjojono was taking care of her daughter Maya in 1980, who was suffering from appendicitis, he made a drawing which became another testimonial of his admiration of Raden Saleh and his wonderful mansion. In the second drawing, From Savoy Hotel, Bandung (lot #183), the artist depicts the view from the famous Savoy Homman Hotel. Curiously, he did not render the hotel's handsome Art Deco style historical building, but instead the rather chaotic view of the street in front of it. The inscription on the painting tells us why he is there, in fact staying at the hotel. His daughter Juang intended to enter the Bandung Institute of Technology, and for that purpose, they needed to book two rooms for two nights in this posh hotel. "This is Indonesia, 1981" he noted, sarcastically. Unfortunately, in the end Djuang did not enter the institute. The Village Temple of Peliatan (lot #183), is the third drawing in this set. Although this work does not include extensive inscriptions, it also serves as a testament of Sudjojono's travels and interests. Although his drawings and sketches usually captured his observations about daily life during his travels, but the magical nuances of sights on the island of Bali seemed to intrigue him aesthetically. --- 182 Sudjojono, Sindudarsono (Kisaran, N. During that time, the Dutch mentioned that the building was: a magnificent palace. Since it was Raden Saleh's residence with a smaill mosque in the back yard, to its zoological gardens (currently the Taman Ismail Marzuki) this was Raden Saleh's personal estate. Now this old building is the Cikini Hospital owned by D.G.I -- Fortunately D.G.I understands its artistic value. Viewed from a medical as well as aesthetic perspective, the Cikini Hospital is the best in the whole of Jakarta. People become comfortable here. I am drawing from the front of Maya's room.
