From the President…
It is summertime at the Witte Museum and we are excited about all the
offerings at the Witte Museum this summer. We thank the City of San Antonio
for creating a brilliant one-way Hildebrand to ease the construction challenges.
You can get to the Witte as quickly as you ever could so please do not worry
about construction when you plan your summer trip to the museum. The
dinos are staying all summer so be sure to visit Patty, the 60-foot Apatosaurus

few months in the Kathleen and Curtis Gunn Gallery. Have you been able to spot Herb among the more than
15 animatronic dinosaurs and full size skeletons in Dinosaurs Unearthed?
What a great time of year it is to get out and ride a bike through beautiful Brackenridge Park and beyond!
The Witte is so pleased to be one of the newest locations for San Antonio B-cycle. Located at the corner
of Tuleta and Avenue B, right next to the Brackenridge Park parking garage, this B-cycle location is a
perfect starting point to take a short ride down to Pearl and then head for a tour of downtown San Antonio.
Plus, Witte Museum members receive a special discount on an annual membership, see page 13 of this
newsletter for the discount code!
This summer also marks the official public launch of the Broadway Reach, a collaboration of seven
institutions linked by Broadway who share a common goal of bringing education, culture and entertainment
to our community. The Brackenridge Park Conservancy, the McNay Art Museum, the San Antonio Botanical
Garden, the San Antonio Children’s Museum, the San Antonio Museum of Art, the San Antonio Zoo and your
Witte Museum invite you to get out and explore the Broadway Reach June 6-9. This four-day celebration
features each institution offering entertainment and family-friendly programs. Additionally a Broadway
Reach joint ticketing pass will be available for purchase, granting admission to all seven locations for one
affordable price.
Don’t miss two new exhibits opening in June: an exhibition showing the history of Magic Lanterns, featuring
artifacts from the finest collection known, The Jack Judson Magic Lantern Castle Collection and an important
exhibition on Texas Impressionism from the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, showing how Texas artists
contributed to American Impressionism.
The Witte is offering something for everyone this summer, from Summer Adventure Camp, a series of
lectures about the latest dinosaur discoveries by distinguished experts and Time Travel Saturdays at the
Robert J. and Helen C. Kleberg South Texas Heritage Center to our beloved Sunday Jazz and Cocktails &
Culture series. Do join us.

Exhibitions
Texas Impressionism:
Branding with Brushstroke and
Color, 1885-1935
June 15 through September 8
Russell Hill Rogers Texas Art Gallery
Breaking the stereotypes about Texas artists in the American
Impressionism movement, the Panhandle-Plains Historical
Museum’s Texas Impressionism exhibition shows how Texas
artists contributed to American Impressionism, whether their
works depicted Texas or not.
Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs and Curator of Art
Michael R. Grauer has chosen to rigidly adhere to a few
Impressionist requirements for a painting to be included in the
exhibition, namely the work must have been painted between
1885 and 1935, have a high-keyed palette bordering on and
including the pastel colors and include active brushwork with
short strokes applied quickly over the surface.
Featured artists include Julian Onderdonk, Robert Onderdonk,
José Arpa, Edward G. Eisenlohr, Ella Koepke Mewhinney,
Dawson Dawson-Watson, Seymour Thomas, Lucien Abrams, E.
Richardson Cherry and Frank Reaugh.
Texas Impressionism: Branding with Brushstroke and Color, 1885-1935 is generously
supported by the City of San Antonio Department for Culture and Creative Development.
The World Through
Magic Lanterns
June 29, 2013 through January 2014
Piper Memorial Wing
From the 1700s until the early 1900s magic lanterns were used
for teaching and storytelling. The devices utilized concepts that
brought modern film projection and television into existence.
This exhibition features examples of Magic Lanterns from the
finest collection known, The Jack Judson Magic Lantern Castle
Collection.
Visitors will see all aspects of making a magic lantern show
in the 1800s, the equipment used and projections of the final
presentations.

Wanderlust: From German to Texan
Through June 9 | Piper Memorial Wing
Drawn from the Witte’s permanent collection, this exhibition focuses
on German emigration and its effects both on the physical and social
structures of San Antonio. Particularly highlighting the 1840s to 1900,
see how German Texans changed the physical appearance of San
Antonio through architecture and the social structure through singing
societies, turnvereins, shooting clubs, theatrical groups and beer
gardens, some of which still remain today.
Wanderlust: From German to Texan is generously supported by the Families of
John Herman Kampmann Meyer, John Herman Kampmann Meyer, Jr., and Theodore
Frederick Meyer in memory of Mildred and Theodore Frederick Meyer, Jr., Kenneth
A. Bonnet, PhD., Patsy Steves, Jane and Marshall Steves, Nancy and Edward Steves,
Sarah and Sam Bell Steves, Lucille and Jim Travis, the Alex Halff Family, Lou Celia and
Don Frost, Betty Halff, Harriett and J. David Oppenheimer, and Dorothea Oppenheimer.
Juan Salinas:
Rodeo Roper and Horseman
Through August 3
Laura and Sam Dawson Gallery
This exhibition pays tribute to Juan Salinas, a South Texas cowboy and
rancher who began competing in rodeos in the late 1920s and by the
late 1930s was well-known and competing as a professional from Texas
to Madison Square Garden in New York City. Get a glimpse into his life
through historical ranch and rodeo photographs including large format
panoramic images, promotional images and candid snapshots; plus,
trophy buckles, a silver loving cup and more.
Patriotism and Pageantry:
Fiesta Honors the Military
Through August 18
Betty Coates Textile Gallery
Paying homage to the military, who has played a vital role in Fiesta
since the first Battle of Flowers Parade in 1891, this year’s Fiesta
exhibition features the coronation robes of the Duchesses of the Armed
Forces as well as other coronation robes celebrating patriotic themes.
Additionally, historic photographs highlight the military’s participation.
The highlight of the exhibition is the dress worn by Cornelia Dumas
Herff, 1976, Princess of the Court of the Lone Star, Honoring Texas
Annexation to the United States. The bodice of the bright red velvet
dress is covered with the wing-tip of an eagle worked in silver lamé and
rhinestones. The train features the eagle with outstretched wings on
the seal of the United States is depicted on the train in silver lamé with
red, silver and blue sequins.
Patriotism and Pageantry: Fiesta Honors the Military is generously supported by
the Fiesta® Commission Charitable Corporation, Lon Cartwright, Claire and George
Vaughan, Picante Grill, and the City of San Antonio Department for Culture and
Creative Development.
