Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs and Curator of Art Michael R. Grauer has chosen to rigidly adhere to a few Impressionist requirements for a painting to be included in the exhibition, namely the work must have been painted between 1885 and 1935, have a high-keyed palette bordering on and including the pastel colors and include active brushwork with short strokes applied quickly over the surface. Featured artists include Julian Onderdonk, Robert Onderdonk, José Arpa, Edward G. Eisenlohr, Ella Koepke Mewhinney, Dawson Dawson-Watson, Seymour Thomas, Lucien Abrams, E. Richardson Cherry and Frank Reaugh. Texas Impressionism: Branding with Brushstroke and Color, 1885-1935 is generously supported by the City of San Antonio Department for Culture and Creative Development. The World Through Magic Lanterns June 29, 2013 through January 2014 Piper Memorial Wing From the 1700s until the early 1900s magic lanterns were used for teaching and storytelling. The devices utilized concepts that brought modern film projection and television into existence. This exhibition features examples of Magic Lanterns from the finest collection known, The Jack Judson Magic Lantern Castle Collection. Visitors will see all aspects of making a magic lantern show in the 1800s, the equipment used and projections of the final presentations. 5 Wanderlust: From German to Texan Through June 9 | Piper Memorial Wing Drawn from the Witte’s permanent collection, this exhibition focuses on German emigration and its effects both on the physical and social structures of San Antonio. Particularly highlighting the 1840s to 1900, see how German Texans changed the physical appearance of San Antonio through architecture and the social structure through singing societies, turnvereins, shooting clubs, theatrical groups and beer gardens, some of which still remain today. Wanderlust: From German to Texan is generously supported by the Families of John Herman Kampmann Meyer, John Herman Kampmann Meyer, Jr., and Theodore Frederick Meyer in memory of Mildred and Theodore Frederick Meyer, Jr., Kenneth A. Bonnet, PhD., Patsy Steves, Jane and Marshall Steves, Nancy and Edward Steves, Sarah and Sam Bell Steves, Lucille and Jim Travis, the Alex Halff Family, Lou Celia and Don Frost, Betty Halff, Harriett and J. David Oppenheimer, and Dorothea Oppenheimer. Juan Salinas: Rodeo Roper and Horseman Through August 3 Laura and Sam Dawson Gallery This exhibition pays tribute to Juan Salinas, a South Texas cowboy and rancher who began competing in rodeos in the late 1920s and by the late 1930s was well-known and competing as a professional from Texas to Madison Square Garden in New York City. Get a glimpse into his life through historical ranch and rodeo photographs including large format panoramic images, promotional images and candid snapshots; plus, trophy buckles, a silver loving cup and more. Patriotism and Pageantry: Fiesta Honors the Military Through August 18 Betty Coates Textile Gallery Paying homage to the military, who has played a vital role in Fiesta since the first Battle of Flowers Parade in 1891, this year’s Fiesta exhibition features the coronation robes of the Duchesses of the Armed Forces as well as other coronation robes celebrating patriotic themes. Additionally, historic photographs highlight the military’s participation. The highlight of the exhibition is the dress worn by Cornelia Dumas Herff, 1976, Princess of the Court of the Lone Star, Honoring Texas Annexation to the United States. The bodice of the bright red velvet dress is covered with the wing-tip of an eagle worked in silver lamé and rhinestones. The train features the eagle with outstretched wings on the seal of the United States is depicted on the train in silver lamé with red, silver and blue sequins. Patriotism and Pageantry: Fiesta Honors the Military is generously supported by the Fiesta® Commission Charitable Corporation, Lon Cartwright, Claire and George Vaughan, Picante Grill, and the City of San Antonio Department for Culture and Creative Development. 6 Day-long or week-long adventures for children in grades 1-2 and 3-5.
