Speaking of upcoming months Christmas is just over two months away so I would like to get a rough head count of who and how many will be accompanying you for the party. Last month’s meeting was like a time machine for me when I saw Joe "The Cotton Ball Kid" Cirillo set up his models with all the cotton, I flashed back to my childhood room with the sewing pin wheel stands and (cotton) smoking tires, the war planes noise diving from the ceiling trailing (cotton) smoke really brought back some fond memories, Thanks Joe! The 2015 Scale Auto Contest Cars showed up at my door and Congratulations to John White for having his 1956 Chevy 210 Del Ray featured in the NNL EAST show pictures, also I understand he and Tory Mucaro took some awards home from the Diversified Scalerz show in Belleville last week Congrats guys hope to hear more about it at the meeting. Model of the Month - Last month we discussed possibly dropping the Message Board Model of the Month contest and everyone decided to keep it going. So if you want to nominate and or submit a model please let me know at the meeting and I will take pictures if I don't get any nominations I will ask a random member to pick 5 models. Kit Raffle Winners - We had 4 pulls and the Winners are: Joel Brower, John Stark, Steve Rehberger, and Chuck Rehberger. That's it for this month Can you believe that it’s already October? Boy has this year gone by fast. We have had a fats year but a good year also. I look back and see we had some great articles in the newsletter and some great contributions from you guys. Dave is transitioning well into his new position and his Scale Talk column is coming naturally. I think he is doing a great job so far. The rest of you guys who send in contributions each month please don’t stop. You are keeping this newsletter rolling and one of the best in the hobby. Anyone with thoughts on other things you might want to see in the future please don’t be shy, speak up and bring us your thoughts and ideas. We want to keep it fun and interesting for you. This month we unfortunately don’t have any truck stuff for the “Truck Stop” feature. We were hopeful that this would be something that everyone embraced and wanted to see each month but it looks like that may not be the case. If you want to see it next month and after than we need you to be sure to send in your contributions. Don’t just sit back and wait for someone else to send us stuff, contribute! Again! Remember if you enjoy reading this newsletter from month to month be sure to take a minute out at one of the meeting and say “Thanks” to the guys that do take their time out to submit stories, reviews, pictures etc. each month. It’s the least we can do. Don’t forget, this is your club and your newsletter and it can only remain fun, interesting and enjoyable with your help and contributions. So review a kit you just built, if you attend a show take some pictures, send them to us and tell us about the show. You get the idea. Submit to [email protected] Remember IT’S A HOBBY KEEP IT FUN! The new model introduced larger wraparound tail lamps, single rectangular headlamps, and squared-off body lines. Variously configured Slant-6 and V8 gasoline engines were available. Did you know?? By Felix Plaza Jr, for JSMCC Dodge Ram The Ram Pickup (formerly the Dodge Ram) is a fullsize pickup truck manufactured by FCA US LLC (formerly Chrysler Group LLC). As of 2010, it has been sold under the Ram Trucks brand. Previously, Ram was part of the Dodge lineup of light trucks. The name Ram was first used in 1981 on the redesigned Ram and Power Ram following the retiring and rebadging of the Dodge D Series pickup trucks as well as B-series vans. The truck is named for the Ram hood ornament that first appeared on Dodge vehicles in 1933. The Ram Truck is in its fourth generation as of the 2009 model year. Ram trucks have been named Motor Trend magazine's Truck of the Year five times; the second-generation Ram won the award in 1994, the third-generation Ram Heavy Duty won the award in 2003, the fourth-generation Ram Heavy Duty won in 2010 and the current Ram 1500 won in 2013 and 2014. The Ram is currently built at the Saltillo Truck Assembly in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico and at the Warren Truck Assembly in Warren, Michigan, United States. As of 2014, the Ram truck Series are available in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Peru (Ram 2500 only), Brazil (Ram 2500 only), and the Middle East (Ram 1500 only) in LHD only. First Generation 1981–1994 (D/W) 1981 Dodge Ram The first-generation Ram trucks & vans introduced in 1981 were named for the Ram hood ornament that first appeared on Dodge vehicles in 1933. Dodge kept the previous generation's model designations: "D", "B" or Ram indicated two-wheel drive while the "W" or Power Ram indicated four-wheel drive. Just like Ford, Dodge used 150 to indicate a one-half ton truck, 250 for a threequarter ton truck, and 350 for one-ton truck. Standard cab, "Club" extended cab, and crew cab versions were offered along with 6.5 ft (2.0 m) and 8 ft (2.4 m) bed lengths and "Utiline" and "Sweptline" styled boxes. Club Webpage - http://www.jsmcc.org/ Second Generation 1994–2002 (BR/BE) 1994 Dodge Ram 1500 The Ram line was redesigned for the 1994 model year. Development on a second generation began in 1986, ending in late 1992. A more conventional design was originally scheduled for a 1991 production; when Bob Lutz showed it to the new designers, chief design engineer Phillip E. Payne told him, "It looks like nothing more than a rehash of everybody else's truck." At that, Lutz told him he had 6 months to come up with something better. The exterior styling of the truck that was eventually released was the result of design concepts by Payne during 1988-1990. A review by the Dodge pick-up truck studio designers felt that modern pick-ups looked "too flat and sedan like", while the early 50's Studebaker pick-up and the 18 wheeler trucks had just the right "macho" look to them. The design featured a big rig-looking front end and a large grille that was nothing like the current Ford or Chevy/GMC pickups in design. Third Generation 2002–2009 (DR/DH/D1/DC/DM) Club Forum: - http://jsmcc.proboards.com/index.cgi Page 3 Jersey Shore Model Car Club Newsletter Chrysler LLC attempted to keep the Ram competitive in the market through various developments for the 2009 model, including a new four-door cab style offering, new suspension, a new hemi engine option, and the Rambox, a new storage system that allows secure storage inside the truck’s bed walls. Later models have the Rambox system tied in with the remote keyless system. Heavy Duty Chassis Cabs 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab The third-generation Ram was unveiled on February 7, 2001 at the 2001 Chicago Auto Show, and debuted for 2002 model year on 1500 models and 2003 on 2500 and 3500 models. This was a major update including an all new frame, suspension, powertrains, interiors, and sheet metal. It included a larger grille, and special models kept interest up as most competitors had adopted the Ram's separate-fender look. The crew cab models for this generation were actually Quad Cab trucks that had conventional-opening rear doors. The four-wheel-drive light trucks (1500 series) lost their live axles in favor of an independent front suspension, but the 2500 and 3500 series retained the live axles for maximum longevity and durability. This body style drew heavily from the previous generation. 2011 Ram 3500 Chassis Cab Chassis Cab versions were made for the Ram 3500, 4500, and 5500 models. The 3500 Heavy Duty model was unveiled at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show. 2013 changes Fourth Generation 2009–present (DS/DJ) 2013 Ram 1500 at the 2013 Montreal International Auto Show 2011 Ram 1500 Four Door Cab The fourth generation Dodge Ram was introduced at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. This latest generation was sold as the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 starting in Fall 2008. The 2500, 3500, 4500 and 5500 models were later added to the lineup. In 2011, the Ram Trucks brand was separated from Dodge. Club Webpage - http://www.jsmcc.org/ The 1500 gets a minor restyling. It features new front fascia, wheels and interior, where the "DODGE" name was removed from the dashboard and replaced with "RAM". All models offered for 2012 continue to be available for 2013 with the addition of a new trim, the Laramie Longhorn Limited. (Tradesman, Express, SLT, Big Horn, Lone Star, Sport, R/T, Laramie, and Laramie Longhorn). The Rambox cargo management system continues to be available on most models for 2013. For 2013, the base ST model becomes the Tradesman model. 2013 models have revised engine and transmission options. The 3.7L V6 is discontinued, and the 4.7L V8 equipped with the 6-speed 65RFE Automatic takes its place as the new base engine, still Club Forum: - http://jsmcc.proboards.com/index.cgi Page 4 Jersey Shore Model Car Club Newsletter producing 310 bhp (230 kW) and 330 lb·ft (450 N·m). New to the lineup is Chrysler's corporate 3.6L Pentastar V6, coupled to the new ZF 8-speed Torqueflite8 Automatic. 2014 changes A two-mode hybrid version was planned to begin production in 2010, but Chrysler decided to cancel it in favor of a smaller test fleet of 140 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Rams developed with support from a US$48 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy financed through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The Chrysler PHEV pickup project has an estimated total cost of US$97.4 million. The RAM 1500 pickup PHEV was introduced at the January 2011 Washington Auto Show. The vehicle is part of a threeyear demonstration program intended to field test and evaluate battery performance across a wide range of drive cycles and temperature ambients, and also to evaluate customer acceptance. The PHEV demonstrator pick-up trucks are assembled at the Warren Truck Assembly plant in Michigan and the plug-in hybrid conversion takes place at the Chrysler Technology Center in Auburn Hills, Michigan. The demonstrators are being allocated for field testing among local and state governments, utility companies, and a U.S. Army base. Chrysler has no plans for a production version. 2014 Dodge Ram 3500 Crew Cab 4x4 DRW Issues: Fire incident, Hybrid, 2012 The option of air suspension became available on the rear of 2014 model year 2500 & 3500 pick-up trucks. 1500 models added the option of a Eco-Diesel V6. 2500 models now feature coil spring suspension, instead of leaf spring. The cast iron, flex fuel, 4.7 V8 Chrysler PowerTech engine is discontinued, ending Corsair engine production. Dodge/Ram 4.7 V-8,3.7 V-6,Jeep was the Power tech [Dodge/RAM was called Magnum 3.7 V-6 4.7 Magnum V-8 2000-2007 2008-2013 it was just the 3.7 V-6 and 4.7 V-8] The aluminum, flex fuel 3.6 V6 Pentastar is now the base engine, along with the eight-speed Torque-Flite transmission. Ram now offers the 3.6L Pentastar V6 on Laramie, and Longhorn trim Plug-in hybrid Ram 1500 pickup PHEV was introduced at the 2011 Washington Auto Show Club Webpage - http://www.jsmcc.org/ In September 2012 Chrysler temporarily suspended the demonstration program. All 109 Dodge Ram 1500 Plugin Hybrids and 23 Chrysler Town & Country plug-in hybrids deployed by the program were recalled due to damage sustained by three separate pickup trucks when their 12.9 kWh battery packs overheated. The carmaker plans to upgrade the battery packs with cells that use different lithium-ion chemistry before the vehicles go back into service. Chrysler explained that no one was injured from any of the incidents, and the vehicles were not occupied at the time, nor any of the minivans were involved in any incident, but they were withdrawn as a precaution. The demonstration is a program jointly funded by Chrysler and the U.S. Department of Energy that includes the first-ever factory-produced vehicles capable of reverse power flow. The experimental system would allow fleet operators to use their plug-in hybrids to supply electricity for a building during a power outage, reduce power usage when electric rates are high or even sell electricity back to their utility company. The company reported that the demonstration fleet had collectively accumulated 1.3 million miles (2.1 million km) before the vehicles were recalled. Chrysler also reported that the plug-in pickups delivered peak average fuel economy of 37.4 mpg (6.29 L/100 km; 44.9 mpg), while the plug-in hybrid minivans delivered 55.0 mpg (4.28 L/100 km; 66.1 mpg). Did you know? Club Forum: - http://jsmcc.proboards.com/index.cgi Page 5 Jersey Shore Model Car Club Newsletter A Case for 1/32 Car Models By Pete Linzsky I’ve been stumping for a 1/32 scale page on our websites Forum page for a time. I thought I’d put together a case for the JSMCC to take a step into the world of 1/32. First of all I think that a good starting point would be space consideration. When confronted with limited display areas, the smaller scale certainly has its advantages over the larger scale. I’m pretty sure that I can fit TWO 1/32 scale cars into one of my old JoHan display cases. Probably with some room left over! Secondly I’ve got point to the many smaller scale builds that appear on our Forum page already. Customs, race cars as well as some stock vehicles are shown with lots of detail apparent. Did I mention the truck models that some of the members have built? They would certainly be a welcomed addition to a 1/32 scale page. Speaking of dioramas, a smaller scale dragstrip diorama would be a great way to display some of Monogram’s 1/32 scale Funny Cars from a few decades back, Blue Max, Pepsi Challenger and how about the Faberge’s BRUTE Arrow flopper? I wonder if any manufacturer every made a 1/32 scale ‘tree for the strip? What about a 1/32 scale custom car show diorama? Pyro issued numerous Hot Rods in the early 1960’s. The “Texan” and the ”Jersey Bounce” come to mind, can anyone name some more? Lindberg’s recent release of the “1925 Ford Model T Street Rod” is actually a reissue from days gone by, from the same company we also have the 1957 Chevrolet rag top and a 1952 Chevy fastback that begs to be customized! Surely AMT’s reissue of the 1/32 Avanti opens the door to many different style builds, stock, and competition builds come to mind. Next, let’s consider all of the kits that were issued” back in the day” that are still available at reasonable cost. AMT, Aurora, Monogram as well as some more obscure companies manufactured a wide variety of kits that have yet to be issued in the larger scales. Not surprisingly, some of these kits are available today as reissues. Lindberg reissued a Jaguar XK-120, an MGA as well as a MG Midget not long ago, has anyone considered a small (remember 1/32 scale) diorama depicting a starting field from an 1960’d sports car event ? Torre Pines, or Paramount Ranch starting grid? The 1948 "Eldorod” Cadillac – a blockbuster hit at the 2012 SEMA show for its custom deep blue paint job, chrome details and hot-rod attitude – captured second place with 19% of the vote. The other candidates were Foose’s 1934 Ford Mercury-inspired "Stallion,” 1935 "Grand Master” Chevy Master Sedan, 1936 "Impression” Ford based roadster, 1965 "Impostor” Impala, and his legendary Hemisfear custom supercar coupe. All seven are considered masterpieces and most have won major industry awards, including prestigious Detroit Autorama Ridler and America’s Most Beautiful Roadster (AMBR) honors. HEY TRUCK GUYS!!! Two Chip Foose Cars Win Fan Vote for Revell Model Kit Production "Going into this, I had no idea what the results would be because – to me – each one of these cars is a favorite,” Foose said. "As it turned out, fans wound up choosing two completely different kinds of vehicles – a pickup and a Cadillac – and that will make for great variety in model building when these kits hit store shelves.” "The fact that this survey generated more than 10,000 votes demonstrates how passionate people are about both Chip’s custom car designs and model car building,” said Brian Eble, Vice President of Marketing, Mass Market, for Revell parent company Hobbico. "These two vehicles will be strong additions to our line of Foose-inspired scale models.” ELK GROVE VILLAGE, IL (July 14, 2015) – With more than 10,000 votes cast in a survey to determine which of seven Chip Foose custom car designs will be brought to market as all-new Revell scale models, the winners are Foose’s iconic 1956 Ford F100 Pickup & 1948 "Eldorod” Cadillac. Both vehicles will be released by Revell as all new model kits in late 2016, providing the market’s first authentic scale replicas of the two winners. Club Webpage - http://www.jsmcc.org/ The two winning vehicles will be released under an exclusive three-year licensing agreement that will also include four reissues of earlier Revell model kits incorporating Foose’s personal design modifications. The series – beginning release in Q4 2015 – will include full glue and paint model kits as well as Revell’s first Foose pre-decorated model glue kits, complete with Foose-created paint schemes, wheel designs and special Foose renderings used only on the Revell box art. The new scale models will add to a Foose collection that also includes Foose 1964 and 1965 Chevy Impala, 1967 Dodge Charger 426 HEMI, 1967 Dodge Coronet, 1969 Camaro Z/28 and 1968 Pontiac Firebird 400 Ram Air model kits. Nice to have something back on our seminar schedule again. Remember the program starts at 8:00 PM and concludes within 20 -30 min prior to Dave calling the meeting to order. Come prepared and engage Walter, ask questions and walk away with some new found skills. I would like to see some others step up and take on a seminar. How about you…..? Well, not a whole lot more to say this month that hasn’t been said before. Tip Talk: Take a 3M post it pad offered by countless manufacturers and companies as give away collateral to their customer base. I use them to drop a little glue on, and then using a tooth pick I apply it to the parts. Clean, no mess. I use it to test paint, dry brushing, mix glues etc. When the top paper gets messy, just tear it off and start with a fresh one. See guys simple, short and helpful so don’t forget our “Tip Talk” segment. – Who’s up for next month? As always if you have something you would like to see in the future or wish to present, just get with me and I will put it on the agenda. Pass it on learn from one another. On Saturday, October 3rd, I went to the Diversified Scalerz 4th show. It was from 9:00 to 3:00 .There was many of the guys I know, including Tory, John Vlahakis, John White, Dave Copollino, Mike Capasso, Ed Isnardi and Tom Geiger. There was about 100 people who showed up. I would think it was more than last year’s attendance for sure. That was a lot of guys for a little show. This was there 4th show and it is definitely growing in attendance and participation each year. These guys really put on a good show and they are a great group of young men. There was some great model cars and trucks on display.at the show. Guys from LIARS were there selling parts and some kits. All so the guy from the hobby shop was there selling his kits too and there was one more guy that was selling kits for Dave Burket. There was a lot of support from the guys from the Jersey Shore Club and the Tri State Club and Lairs Club and some I don't know. I only was there to 1:00 and had to go. I don't know who won all of the awards but I did hear that Tory and John White took home some. But there was a lot of great models. The only bad part about it was the weather, it was COLD. Looking forward to next year’s show. THAT’S ALL FOLKS Doug. Until next time, thanks again. See you at this month’s meeting. Be safe, keep building. Super September Showdown XVI Show Recap By Chuck Rehberger PAPER BAG CONTEST THIS MONTH!!! On Sunday, September 13, 2015, my brother Steve and I went to the Super September Showdown XVI in Gilbertsville, Pennsylvania. The show was proudly presented by Len Feinberg and the Central Pennsylvania Model Car Club. This year’s theme was “The European Invasion”, or build any car, truck or bike born in Europe, in any style, in any scale. There were also awards for twenty-one classes and best in show. We looked forward all year to five hours of the Super September Showdown Pennsylvania style. We pulled into the Gilbertsville Fire Department parking lot and we immediately noticed that the parking lot was filled up like never before. It seemed there were even more cars in the lot that last year’s record setting year. Upon entering the hall, we were pleased to see it was still only $5 to enter. It didn’t matter if you were a spectator, or entering one model or entering thirty models, it was only $5. There were no door prizes at this show, so I was able to keep my streak of not winning a door prize alive. I had intentions of entering nine models and had pre-printed and filled out my registration form on my home computer the night before. Although there was no wait at the front door, the hall was really packed with builders and spectators checking out the models and vendors. The model car display tables were almost at capacity regarding model on display. Classes that had been sparsely entered in the past, small scale, firsts responders and trucks were well represented. I decided not to display any of the models I brought, as I thought they were much better than mine. About an hour after arriving, I went next door to the "Turkey Hill" hoping to get a fresh cup of coffee and a piece of "Shoo Fly" Pie. For the second year in a row they didn’t have "Shoo Fly" Pie. Disappointed I settled for a piece of apple pie, oh well, maybe next year. Club Webpage - http://www.jsmcc.org/ Club Forum: - http://jsmcc.proboards.com/index.cgi Page 11 Jersey Shore Model Car Club Newsletter Back inside I experienced firsthand that the vendor's at this show were some of the best ever. Almost all the vendors selling kits and used parts were willing to negotiate over the price. It seemed that half of the vendors were club members of the host club selling kits, built-ups and parts they no longer wanted. At Gilbertsville of all the model car shows / swap meets selling old models, built-ups and model cars parts... you better buy it when you see it the first time. If you don't, the next time you come around looking for it, it will be gone. My first stop at the vendors table, was a guy selling little plastic bags of parts, I picked up a Rat Packer Chevy II chassis and interior bucket, vintage funny car floors, a bag of wheel backs, 2 cardboard AMT mini boxes, Monogram TD slicks, and some other parts I can’t recall at the moment. The parts bags were marked with a price, I added mine up to and they came out to $ 5.25, when I went to pay the vendor, he said let me see, how does $3 sound. It sounds like a deal to me. The next vendor had a cardboard box of vintage tires, a set of AMT Firestone Red/Blue lines, two sets of MPC vintage late 60’s annual kit Good Year tires, two sets of recent AMT hollow Good Year and three complete sets of tires, plus another dozen drag slicks. The box was marked $20, he said don’t go by what on the box, he went over the tires and pointed out the same qualities why I wanted them. He said I could have them for $10. Then the same vendor had a ’65 El Camino “GEARHUSTLER” built-up missing bumpers, a grill and engine…but it did have the chrome bezels around the tail lights. Dave Wood has been looking for a set of these bezels for years now to complete his Hollywood Knights El Camino. I was happy to finally find a set for him… almost as much as he was. I picked up the El Camino for $4 and decided to build a custom with the left over custom parts from the ’65 wagon and ’65 El Camino parts that I had. I swapped the bezels for the custom parts Dave had. building experience I didn’t have back then. I loved the wheels on this kit, and been looking for one for years. Steve picked up a bunch of truck built-up and Tom Geiger smiled ear to ear when he picked up a vintage Hubley or Airfix Renault Dauphine kit. I can’t wait to see what he does with it. Jersey Shore Model Car Club members in attendance in addition to Steve and I were, Bob Doebley, Dave Coppolino, Tom Geiger, Bill Hewett, and John White. Congratulations to John White, for his First Place award in Factory Stock and Bill Hewett for his First Place win in Heavy Commercial It was good seeing and talking to other builders from New York, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey that you briefly see throughout the year. There were a few members of the LIARS club that made the long ride from Long Island New York…dedication to the hobby. I was able to catch up with old and real old friends from other clubs that I haven’t seen in a while Like I said, it seemed that I spent most of the show talking to friends and looking for bargains. I didn’t take any pictures of models other that the ’57 Ford Ranchero I saw in the parking lot. As a matter of fact, despite looking for them, I don’t recall seeing any Gilbertsville show pics on any FOTKI page. I did see a Video on Youtube with some of the models, mostly trucks. Check it out at www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSnkYWN9D2M After the show, Steve and I wanted to enjoy a typical Pennsylvania Dutch family style meal so we headed right to Yacco's for some hot dogs, fries and a Coke. As usual we all enjoyed the courteous, fast and friendly service at Yacco’s. On the way home we also stopped at WAWA for good cup of coffee for the ride home. I also picked up pieces of a built up ’72 GMC Jimmy with a ’70 Chevy grill / bumper and short roof for $5, A few days later Steve and I cast the ’70 bumper/ grill for a few other Chevy Pickup truck projects on the bench and down the road. I also picked up a really nice ’60 Falcon Ranchero built-up of the Ohio George Eliminator kit for only $10. I was going to make a gas station service truck out of it but it is so nice I think I will clean it up a little, tweak the wheels and throw on a set of plates. It was just too nice to mess with. I also picked up a bunch of bagged built-ups for $3 each, like a Monogram Chaparral, Revell Charger Funny Car, Aurora Drop-out Bus and Aurora Chaparral. I also picked up a HOLY GRAIL of sorts, a sealed Palmer ’40 Ford Sedan for only $10. It’s not your typical Palmer model, it’s more like a 1/32 version of a vintage AMT ’39 / ’40 Ford Sedan. I built three when I was a kid, none of which survived. I want to build this one right with the added 45 years of model Club Webpage - http://www.jsmcc.org/ Like I said last year and the year before, and the year before that…for you guys that missed Gilbertsville this year, you missed a lot of great models and an even greater show. But on the other hand, if you don’t go there will be more bargains in the vendor’s room for me.
