LIVING THANKSGIVING: Last week, our PK4 and Kindergarten students continued
their inquiry into how traditions and celebrations may unify people with an in-depth, hands-on look
into the history and traditions of Thanksgiving. Our students brought the story of Thanksgiving to life
with our reenactment of “The Living Thanksgiving”.
Our voyage began on the Mayflower, where we endured “66 days” of rough seas, dried meat and
biscuits. We were thrilled when we saw land through our telescopes! Upon arriving in the New World,
the students began the chores of a Pilgrim which included candle making, thatching a roof, washing clothes, making
butter, fishing, woodworking, planting, weaving and more.
We were very fortunate to have Squanto come and teach us how to use fish as fertilizer for our crops, and we, in turn,
showed him how to build shelter, wash clothes, and weave cloth. To celebrate our hard work, we gave thanks with a feast,
complete with turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, vegetable soup and pumpkin pie!
A very special THANK YOU to all of our volunteers!!!! Because of their generosity and time, teachers, parents and
students were able to make intellectual, social and historic memories for our Pre-K4 Beach Buddies and Kindergarten
Frogs!
THE FORENSICS TEAM (an extension of the middle school drama elective) had its second
meet of the year on November 18th. At this competition, drama/forensics students competed against
eight other schools. "We added to our ranks, bringing a larger team this second meet," explained Mr.
Vokoun. "We had many new members do an amazing job!” Congratulations to the Middle School
Forensics Team:
Seventh grader Toni Keene, who placed 5th in Oral Interpretation of Poetry for her deep poem "Color Bandits" by
PJ Liguori. This was a tough poem, filled with metaphor and symbolism, and Toni handled it expertly.
Eighth grader Isabella Rivera placed 3rd in Oral Interpretation of Poetry for her moving performance of the slam
poetry piece "Hands" by Sarah Kay, which delved into all the important way we use our hands.
Eighth grader Derek Sokol placed second in Oral Interpretation of Poetry with his fun performance of "Maybe
Dats Your Pwoblem Too" by Jim Hall, which incorporates purposely misspelled words within it to force the reader or
performer to affect his or her speech to make the audience know that it is told from a young person's point of view.
Derek did an excellent job! One judge commented, "Excellent voice inflection! Way to stay in character! Great
gestures with a complicated piece."
Sixth grader Ava Hill placed third in Oral Interpretation of Prose for her touching monologue about a middle
school candidate seeking one day of "no name calling" from the book The Misfits by James Howe.
Sixth grader Carlos Rivera earned a trophy, this time placing second in Oral Interpretation of Drama for his
stirring performance of the all-important court scene from A Few Good Men, made famous by Tom Cruise and Jack
Nicholson. He handled this difficult piece with precision.
Eighth graders Ian Vokoun and Norman Bukingolts earned second placed in Duo Interpretation of Drama for
their hilarious scene from "Funeral Parlor" by Christopher Durang. In this scene Ian's character, Marcus, feels that he
must teach Norman's character, Sal - a mourning widower, how to keen, which is an Irish way to sob hysterically.
Seventh grader Keeley Pendergrass earned first place in Oral Interpretation of Prose for her heart wrenching
monologue, "The Most Wonderful Laugh in the World." She was able to make at least one of her audience cry during
her presentation. One judge stated, "You had excellent command of this piece!"
"Our new team members did a phenomenal job," beamed Ms. Watson. "Five of our new team members, Keeley, Ava,
Derek, Isabella, and Toni, all earned trophies at their very first meet! This is so difficult to accomplish! Also, eight out
of ten of our team members earned a trophy!"
The Drama/Forensics team consisted of the following members: Ian Vokoun, Norman Bukingolts, Isabella Rivera,
Toni Keene, Derek Sokol, Ava Hill, Elicia Drew, Madigan Reens, Keeley Pendergrass, and Carlos Rivera.

THE CORBETT PREP MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT COUNCIL leads an
Annual Food Drive to collect canned and dry foods for Metropolitan Ministries. Our students
understand that close to 20,000 families in the Tampa Bay area need assistance during this
important time of year.
So, the Student Council challenged the Corbett Prep student body to raise 700 pounds of
canned and dry foods for Metropolitan Ministries. In a one week food drive, the students and
families of Corbett Prep EXCEEDED the goal and delivered 840 pounds of assorted foods to
the Metropolitan Ministries Holiday Tent on Tuesday, November 24, in time for the items to
assist families for Thanksgiving! CONGRATULATIONS Corbett Prep!!
MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE
LITERALLY DIVES INTO LEARNING!
Corbett Prep Middle School takes learning deep into real life application and
experiences! For example:
DO YOU KNOW WHAT AN AQUIFER IS? WHAT ABOUT A
GAR? Mr. Chorvat explains: Sixth graders went to the source last month
to answer these questions and many more at Rainbow River in Dunnellon, Fla. This
awesome field trip is an extension of their learning about ecosystems and
Lakewatch.
When they arrived, a dive master from the dive shop came and gave a presentation, where he showed a
model of how human activities affect the rivers, oceans, aquifers, lakes and other connected waterways.
The students learned about how fertilizers, nitrates and other factors can influence the water quality. They
also learned about the different organisms that live in these ecosystems and how they all interact and why
clean water is so important to them.
Finally, the dive master explained that this area is incredibly old and that they have found fossilized shark
teeth, Native American arrowheads, and other fossilized organisms like sand dollars and sea biscuits. He
also showed the multiple types of springs.
Sixth grade was able to witness and experience many things first hand like bass fish, gar fish (a long fish
with a pointy snout), turtles, dissolved oxygen, temperature and springs. A spring is where water from the
aquifer comes to the surface, and it can pump out over 1,000,000 gallons of water a day! The aquifer is the
underground water source where wells get water and the aquifer supplies most of the water for all of the
United States. One of the favorite springs from the trip was Skydive Springs. This spring was so powerful
that if you swam down toward it and stopped swimming, it would push you all the way up to the surface. It
was like reverse skydiving!
The students had the opportunity to dive into the very powerful spring that actually propelled them to the
surface. One of Mr. Chorvat’s favorite moments was when he went to explore a cave with a spring inside.
He went all the way in and turned around and was about to head back to the surface. Then he saw the
students had come to check out the cave themselves. They had all been improving their free diving abilities
and their equalizing. Equalizing is when you dive down to different atmospheres and make the pressure
equal in your ears. It brought a smile to Mr. Chorvat’s face underwater (beneath his mask) when he saw
these curious students wanting to discover and learn more about Florida, water, and these incredible
ecosystems. (A note to shine about Corbett Prep trivia…Mr. Chorvat is an IDS alum!!)

Corbett Prep Maker’s Mondays Exercise Imaginations in Upper Primary
Dec. 3, 2015 (TAMPA, Fla.) – Balance a tower of plastic
cups on a small wooden cube. Construct a hideaway with
a partner using only silent communication. Build a structure
of small blocks, panels and rods that reaches at least 18
inches high without toppling.
Imagination and engineering align when Maker’s Monday
comes around to Upper Primary classes.
The maker movement embraces “learning by
doing” and increases student engagement.
Students in first and second grade at Corbett Preparatory
School of IDS are trying their hands at becoming “makers”
— do-ers, problem-solvers and creative thinkers — as
they tackle various challenges their teachers prepare for
them each week.
Working independently or in multiage pairs and teams, the students use simple materials to complete a task.
At first, they may have limited information as they implement their own ideas and learn through trial and
error. Later, teachers may provide more guidance, share examples or encourage students to walk around
the room and learn from others. When they have finished, the students reflect on the challenges and
successes and what they could do differently.
Vickii Johnson and Andria Petty, teachers in the “Mighty Monkey” classes, introduced Maker’s Monday to
Upper Primary after attending Maker Faire in New York this fall, part of Corbett Prep’s commitment to
professional development. The festival showcases inventions, creations and experimentation from people in
diverse fields. Scientists, computer programmers and engineers can be makers, but so can artists,
performers, crafters and hobbyists.
The World Maker Faire in New York, one of the flagship maker-events in the United States, took place at the
New York Hall of Science and brought together the largest gathering of makers on the East Coast. Displays,
performances, demonstrations and speakers reflected the diversity of what the maker community creates.
IBM, Google, NASA and Microsoft also attended, looking for problem-solvers of the future.
The maker movement in schools celebrates student engagement and “learning by doing.” Authors Sylvia
Libow Martinez and Gary Stager refer to it as “active classrooms” in their book Invent to Learn. “In active
classrooms one will find engaged students, often working on multiple projects simultaneously, and teachers
unafraid of relinquishing their authoritarian role,” they write. “The best way to activate your classroom is for
your classroom to make something.”
At tables, desks and on the floors on Mondays, Corbett Prep Upper Primary students are busy brainstorming
and building as they embrace their roles as the next generation of makers. First grader Noah Martinez says
he looks forward to the challenges. His favorite part: “Getting to make different creations.”
Founded in 1968, Corbett Preparatory School of IDS (formerly Independent Day School - Corbett Campus) is a fully accredited,
nonsectarian private school in Tampa’s Carrollwood neighborhood. The school serves over 500 students from pre-kindergarten
through eighth grade and offers the International Baccalaureate program of study for all students. Teachers are endorsed in gifted
education through a master’s level grant with the University of South Florida College of Education. Corbett Prep has become
recognized as an exemplary school with over 7,000 visitors observing and learning from Corbett Prep teachers. For more information,

Directions:
ACADEMY AT THE LAKES: 1800 Collier Parkway, Land O’ Lakes, (813) 948-2133.
Dale Mabry Hwy north to the end at Junction 41. Left onto Junction 41. 1/4 mile right onto State Road 54. Travel approximately 3 miles, left onto
Collier Parkway. The Gym is on the left side of street…school is on both sides. For Soccer travel past the school ½ of a mile and the Land O
Recreation Center is located on right side.
ST. JOHN’S EPISCOPAL:
Take Dale Mabry Hwy / Left on Kennedy Blvd / Right on Willow Ave/ 2ND Light Left Turn on Platt / Go ¾ Mile – School is on the Left Side / Yellow
Building.
Parking procedures here at St. John's Episcopal Middle School. We do not own the parking lot beside the school so no matter how full or empty it
is, we can not park there. We do own a grass lot across the street however that we use for parking. As you all know, our school is located on the
corner of Platt and Plant. If you turn left on Plant Ave. you will see the cross town directly in front of you. Directly beneath the cross town is our
parking. You will see our grass lot on the left under the cross town. It is surrounded by a black fence. After parking, we suggest that you walk
down to the traffic light where there is a crosswalk. Busses are welcome to drop off and pick-up players right beside the school; however, they will
need to park the bus in our cross town lot.
Tampa Day School: 12606 Henderson Road, Tampa FL 33625.
Head South on Dale Mabry and make right on Linebaugh heading west. Make right on Henderson and head North, school is on left hand side.
