ADVICE FROM
FPL
FOR
SEASONAL
RESIDENTS
fans to limit their operation from 9 pm until noon
each day.
If You Have A Manual Thermostat
FPL recommends setting your air conditioning
system to 80 degrees for detached homes and
townhouses and 77 degrees for condos and
apartments. These measures control the relative
humidity (RH) in your vacant home by providing dehumidification to help prevent mold
growth.
Other Ways To Save While You Are Away
SAVE MORE by turning off the circuit breakers to
the water heater and refrigerator. Make sure the
refrigerator is clean and you have a way to keep
the door open while you are gone.
UNPLUG ELECTRONICS to save money and protect
them from lightning strikes during the rainy
season. Remember, if it feels warm to the touch
when it is plugged in, then it is consuming
energy -- even when you are not using it. If You Have A Programmable
Thermostat
A programmable thermostat is a more energyefficient and effective option. FPL recommends
programming thermostats at 72 degrees for just
two hours each morning before sunrise and at
88 degrees the rest of the time. This will help
prevent mold by removing moisture from the
air during the cooler hours, when relative
humidity (RH) is highest and your A/C runs
most efficiently.
IF YOU HAVE CABLE OR A SATELLITE FOR YOUR TV:
When the TV is off, put your hand on the box
that tunes the channels. If you feel any heat,
keep it unplugged until you need it again when
you return.
Energy Efficiency Tips
• Always set the A/C fan switch to the
“auto” mode.
• Ceiling fans are not necessary since your
A/C already circulates the air.
Mold Prevention
SNOWBIRD REMINDERS:
The most energy-efficient option to help
prevent mold from developing in vacant homes
is to use stand-alone dehumidifiers instead of
the air conditioner.
• Use one dehumidifier for every 1,000 square
feet of floor area.
• Set the controls to 58 percent RH, and locate
them by the kitchen sink or bathroom
shower so water from the drainage tube can
go down the drain.
• Keep the doors to each room open to help
the dry air mix with other air throughout the
house. A floor fan set on low speed can help
circulate dehumidified air to other rooms.
• You can add timers to the dehumidifiers and
1. Inform PCMA office of your address change
(this must also be done when you return.)
2. Inform village property manager of emergency
contact numbers and who has a key to your unit.
3. Shut off main water supply valve, then test it by
opening a hot or cold faucet to make sure no
water comes out. Test this prior to the day you are
leaving in case repairs are needed.
4. Stay informed about Platina happenings by
accessing the Platina Website at: PlatinaBoyntonBeach.com
5. Make sure you cancel newspaper, mail and any
other service.

By Rhoda Fisher
April’s here and I’m no fool, are you getting
ready to go to the pool? Well, so am I once I
find my teeny-weeny yellow polka-dotted
plus-size bikini.
Though April has its showers, just think how
its precipitation is enhancing our flowers,
trees, bushes and lawns and making them
lush. Aside from the flora and fauna, we
celebrate the holidays of Passover and Easter
this month, Matzos and Easter eggs and bunnies how wonderful. The downside is April
15, tax day.
WHO IS THIS?
Just a remember, although there can be days
of showers, don’t let it rain on your parade.
Smile, be happy, don’t forget your umbrella
and enjoy April.

Ralph is doing fine now.
These stories are to remind anyone who is entrusted
with a neighbor’s key to mark it plainly and put it
where it can always be located. Don’t think that after
five years you are going to remember which key it is
in a drawer full of keys. Also keep your cell phone
turned on and beside your bed.
Call to Action:
Be a Good Neighbor
By Carol Frazier
Being neighborly means different things to different
people. In a close-proximity neighborhood such as
Platina, it may mean being friendly without being
nosy. Depending on personal preferences, it may
mean staying invisible except for a quick wave
while getting the mail. It may mean being available
to take your neighbor to the doctor if their car won’t
start, to lend an egg, or to be available for any unexpected need.
As far as new neighbors moving in, introduce yourself, say hello, and perhaps offer a welcoming gift
(cookies or pie never fail). Don’t hesitate to share
some information about the area: where a good
restaurant is or let them know about any neighborhood parking etiquette.
A good neighbor will respect your privacy but will be
there to help in times of need. I think we do a pretty
good job here in Platina. All it takes is a little awareness beyond our own four walls.

phone turned on and beside your bed.
Two examples of reasons to be a good neighbor
came to our attention recently. Norman Weiner of
Diamante Village had a neighbor across the court
who was a recent widower. Norman’s kitchen
window faced his neighbor. So Norman asked him if
he would open his kitchen blinds each morning as a
signal that he was up and around and all right.

parking etiquette.
One morning the blinds remained closed and
Norman repeatedly called him on the phone with no
response. He checked, and the neighbor’s car was
in his parking space. Norman did have a key and
went in and found his neighbor unconscious on the
bathroom floor. He called 911 and they took him to
the hospital. He is alive and well thanks to a good
neighbor.
The second example is one to remind us all of the
importance and “responsibility” of having that
emergency key. I hadn’t seen my neighbor, Ralph
Inacce, for a couple of days and wondered if he was
off on a trip. I found out later that he had an acute
case of gout and was trapped in his bed for four
days, unable to get to the phone. His friend, Manny
Moho, had come to the door but had no key. Ralph
had given a key to another neighbor years ago, but
now they were unable to find it. Finally he was able
to drop to the floor on a blanket and drag himself to
the front door to let Manny in. Manny called 911.

Our March 6 luncheon was lovely.
Prime Catch did a nice job and the
company was great. We are always
so glad to meet our teachers in a
social setting. March also saw our
elections. The board was re-elected,
which made us all feel very good.
That was a nice vote of confidence.
It is hard to realize that this season is drawing to a
close and soon many of our snowbirds will be going home. We certainly hope this winter will end
because it has been a hard one for our families up
north. Our classes will go from 50-60 down to about
27-30 people. We look forward to filling up again
next season.
Joan Trombka
We have grown from six most dedicated ladies to 30 people, including
a gentleman. We are most grateful
to have such a nice big group.
We have a wonderful trainer who
honestly cares about us. She keeps
us working for one hour twice a
week and also makes it fun. We really exercise our
bodies and our minds in a very comfortable way.
The water enables us to move with ease, yet gives us
the exercise we need.
We love our aquacise class and we hang!
Myrna Rosenfeld, President
At the beginning of our February
meeting I announced that it was
necessary to have an election for the
Board. I opened the floor asking if
anyone was interested in running.
No one offered. I announced that
Adrienne Price (who was unable to attend) had contacted me and offered
her services. I will formally welcome her as an addition to our present four-member Board at the April
meeting. The consensus was a unanimous vote for
the present Board to remain.
Our numbers keep growing and we (the Board) have
constantly strived to keep adding new and innovative additions to our repertoire. Of course, making
changes is at best a gamble ... and certainly a constant challenge. Our luncheon reflected those challenges.
This meeting also brought our own Joan Trombka reviewing “The Invention of Wings.”
Our presenters each have their own unique method.
Some tell the story and ask questions of the audience. Joan took the high road and asked the audience, “Are there any questions?” Well, needless to
say, my heart took a little pause (fearing the meeting
was over way too soon). But, the audience reacted
with gusto. One question led to another and Joan
(completely prepared) answered every one of them
with accuracy and confidence.
Once again, the audience of about 90 applauded
Joan for her fine work and we look forward to two
more meetings. Our April meeting will be “Me Before You” by Jodi Picoult and our May meeting will
be Nora Natke presenting “The Escape” by David
Baldacci.
We welcome all of Platina to join us.
Anita Goldstein, President
This month our guest speaker was
Abby Stokes. She was warm, funny,
and oh! so savvy!
Abby introduced us to her new book,
“Is This On?” and gave an outline of
the book. It was released the end of
March to the public. Two books were
raffled during the meeting and the recipients were
thrilled to receive them.
Our classes are held every weekday and instructors
are available to answer your questions.
Remember, our meetings are the second Thursday
of the month at 7:30 p.m. and we always have

MEET Lou Feinstein
About 20 years ago, while still working, Lou
started writing poetry. Several of his poems
were published in local newspapers. Lou was
living in Rockland County, N.Y., at the time and
the Rockland Journal News published his poetry.
In 1998, Lou was recognized as one of the top 100
new poets in the country. He began writing
short stories. His latest is entitled “56 Blind
Dates Until Success.” Lou is excited about the
release of his novel and the opportunity to have
some book signings to meet his readers in the
near future.
A Novelist Living in Platina
By Joan Easton
Submitted by
Rhoda Fisher
Did you know that you have to send 50 pages of
a manuscript to a publisher to jump-start the
publication of a book? Lou Feinstein repeated
this procedure 20 times! Then, you have to wait
four months to know whether your book is
accepted or rejected. Lou was impatient, so after
three months decided to self-publish his book.
Then he got the call from a Canadian publisher,
Editions Dedicaces, that they would print it! Platina is home to a new book author.
To avoid residue when measuring sticky liquids
(honey, molasses), rinse measuring cup in hot
water first.
You waste milk by using it for scrambled eggs
or omelets. Milk makes eggs watery because it
won’t blend with them. Use water, which
makes eggs fluffy.
Attach a few good-size magnets to the inside of
your metal bathroom cabinet. Safety pins, hair
pins, tweezers and nail files and other small
metal objects can be found at a glance.
It took Lou five years to complete his first novel,
S.O.D.: Swords of David. His co-author is Nancy
Genovese. This is a novel of intrigue and adventure. The main character is Major Avi Levine, son
of Shanna Levine (an Israeli) and Demetri
Bastone (an Italian). Avi, aka Antonio Bastone, is
a successful entrepreneur and olive oil king who
is summoned by the U.S. Ambassador, retired
General Simon Levy, and the Israeli Prime Minister, Rachel Lagashi. Swords of David is a covert
operation and Antonio will head the team, which
will operate independently of the State of Israel.

that is firm and smooth. The underside should
be yellowish or cream white. To test for ripeness
in an uncut watermelon, gently knock or rap on
the rind and you should hear a deep, hollow
“thump.” The inside should appear bright red,
firm and juicy with mostly black seeds. White
streaks in the melon indicates a less sweet fruit.

The third Monday in April is designated as
Patriot’s Day. Though it may not be celebrated as
lavishly as other holidays, to New Englanders it
is a day when many offices close, and banks,
schools, post offices and businesses may opt to
take the day off.
I have misplaced my patience, too
Somehow it’s just not there.
I search for strong ambition
Can’t find it anywhere.
Patriot’s Day commemorates the Battle of
Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. This
battle began the American Revolutionary War. It
also honors the “midnight Ride of Paul Revere”
that evening when he rode through town warning the colonists that “The Red Coats are
coming!”
But muddle through we all must do
This world will keep on spinning,
What’s lost is found, what’s found is lost
Each day … a new beginning!

We have had four meetings of our new board (four
members) and we are still talking to each other.
As yet no hostilities. Have had three closings and
one rental this year. The new pest control company
came. They called to let me know that they were on
grounds and would start at the time we requested.
Their performance was satisfactory, as yet no complaints from the unit owners.
We would like to have some of our new unit owners come to a meeting to introduce themselves and
to get a glimpse of our inner workings. Look on the
bulletin boards for the date and time of the meetings.
If you are a seasonal resident please remember you
should do the following before you leave:
1. Leave a key with someone to let in exterminator.
2. Turn off the main water line and the circuit breaker for the hot water tank.
3. Notify TRAK Management and PCMA of your
summer contact information.
4. Have someone check the unit periodically.
Have a safe, happy and healthy summer.

SEASON
By Carol Fraizer
What Platina Is Doing To Prepare
According to Bernie Gershen,
Gershen, Chairman, the EOC,
Emergency Operations Committee, is mandated to
do the greatest good for the greatest number of
people. They have practice sessions, protocol procedures, and work in conjunction with each village.
Prior to an approaching storm, residents and
villages are responsible for checking doorways,
walkways, and surrounding property to make sure
there are no pots, doormats, or hoses outside that
could become flying missiles. Villages will have
radio communication the PCMA Emergency Operations Committee .
Our clubhouse command center will have a ham
radio and cell phones with ability to enable texting
even if cell towers are down. PCMA ham radio
operators will be in contact with Emergency Operators Command for Palm Beach County, who in turn,
are in contact with Tallahassee, who are in contact
with FEMA.
Our COP unit will start patrolling our community
as soon as the roads are clear.
What Residents Need To Do To Prepare
During hurricane season, informational publications are always available at major grocery chains
and online at the local television news websites as
well as: pbcgov.com/dem/hurricane. There you
will find emergency shopping lists, information on
shelters, evacuation routes, as well as which area
stores are powered by generators.
The rule of thumb is to have five to seven days
worth of drugs, food, and water on hand. Have
enough cash on hand as banks and ATMs may not
be operational. Have an up-to-date first aid kit.
Make sure your flashlights have good batteries.
Designate a safe room, preferably one with no windows, such as the master bathroom and store your
supplies there. Keep your freezer full, as it will stay
cold longer.
Make a trip to your local hardware store where you
can stock up on tarps and duck tape in case your
windows break. Don’t plan on calling 911 if a tree
goes through your window because emergency
vehicles are not allowed on the road if the winds are
above 40 mph. For safety sake, do not stand on your
lanai to watch the storm.
If we are lucky enough to get a pass again this hurricane season, you can feel good about donating your
stock of “hurricane “ ready to eat foods to our food
drive in the spring.

E-I-E-I-O ...
MEET RICHARD LEWIS
By Jeanne Weinberg
Richard Lewis had a farm ... E-I-E-I-O. And on this
farm he had more than 3,000 hogs, over 20,000
chickens, acres of crops and an extensive orange
grove. This all took place in Venezuela where he
lived for 43 years … but first let me introduce you
to this most interesting Platina resident.
Richard Lewis, whose brother Jerry was featured in
our March Platina Post, was born and raised in
Brooklyn, NY. “After a while,” he said, “we moved
to Far Rockaway, N.Y.” Richard graduated from
Newtown H.S. after which he attended Cornell
University, where he was the Editor of Internationally Speaking, Cornell’s international student magazine. “This was during the Korean conflict,” Richard
continued, “and I left Cornell, temporarily, and
registered for the draft. I spent one year in
Germany in a mobile artillery unit.” After his
discharge, he returned to Cornell, graduating with
a Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Economics.
“After graduation I enrolled in the American Institute of Foreign Trade, in Arizona,” he said, “But
after a year, I left to study language in Mexico.”
Richard was always
an avid fan of
traveling, and at
this point in his
life a Vespa was
his way to go.
“I had already
purchased a small
Vespa scooter and
started my journey,”
he said. “It took
me from Phoenix,
Arizona, to Mexico
City, where I enrolled in a language school so I
could get a thorough education in Spanish. After
graduation, I hopped on my Vespa again, and traveled north through Mexico, the U.S. and Canada.,
eventually arriving at my home in New York City.
Along the way, I was interviewed by the St. Louis
based animal feed company, Ralston Purina,” he
continued. “I was eventually hired in their International Department.” This position would lead him
to drive south to cover all of Central America,
where he would spend a month or so in each of the
six countries. “After one year,” he said, “I was sent
to Venezuela; and after two years, was made Sales
Manager of Western Venezuela, after which, manager for all of Venezuela. Through my involvement
within the livestock industry, I explored opportunities that were available in livestock production.”
He purchased a small hog farm … in fact it was
right next door to a farm owned by Nelson Rockefeller … and the rest, as they say, is history. He
enlarged his farm to 75 acres, which now included
over 20,000 chickens, 14 acres of crops, an extensive
orange grove plus the 3,000 hog unit as was mentioned at the beginning of this article. He was
elected President of the State Hog Association in
Venezuela and at one point received a medal from
Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez for “Hog
Grower of the Year.”
Richard Lewis’ life is much more diversified than
hogs and chickens. He created a company that now
publishes five distinct national magazines for the
livestock and agricultural sectors of Venezuela. He
was an avid hang gliding enthusiast, flying off the
mountain tops surrounding his farm, and landing
3,000 feet below at the valley floor. He terminated
his flying experiences after breaking his arm along
with his kite. He is an avid traveler and has visited
and passed many a night in well over 50 countries.
Richard met his wife, Flor, in Venezuela and after
their marriage in Delray, have driven cross-country
twice, with a pup tent in tow, so as to introduce her
to the U.S. They have been married seven years and
he enjoys spending time with his two stepgrandchildren.

The Men's Club is very proud to announce that
they have arranged for five WW II Platina veterans
to attend the nationally acclaimed and highly publicized Honors Flight on April 18, 2015. This is an
all-expense trip to Washington D.C. The trip is
exclusively for WW II and Korean Veterans, paid
solely by individual generous donors. The trip
includes round-trip flight, dinner, all Washington ground transportation and chaperones to handle all
of their needs. They are usually met at the airports
with hero welcomes, attended by the media.
The Vets are Gerry Cassella, Lou Cohen, Richard Naer,
Art Needelman and Norman Weiner.
The Men's Club has submitted approximately 35
applications from other Platina residents who wish
to take part in this program. On May 25 the Men’s Club will sponsor another
informational meeting about the Honors Flight
program and will have a special presentation of a
movie describing in detail the workings of the
program and follow several veterans as they take
part in it. At that meeting you will be able to submit
your application to take part in the program.

SUSAN DOYLE (561) 371-9925
PLEASE REMEMBER!! I AM THE ONLY ONE TO CALL WHEN IT COMES TO PLATINA.
SUSAN DOYLE AND REAL ESTATE = MORE $ IN YOUR BANK!
Throughout my real estate career I have sold thousands of homes in Boynton Beach and the surrounding areas, including Platina many times over. My specialty is listening to my client’s needs and supplying the most fluent and seamless transactions and putting more profit in your pocket than my competitors. My company, Re/Max Direct and I are always on the forefront of real estate technology and progress. I can do things no one else can for my clients. I am told I am firm, sincere and brutally honest. You need this combination to do what I do. I have developed these attributes from working with sellers and buyers who have over the years explained what they deserve from a realtor. My business has grown so much over the years from past and current customers. It is very rewarding to know you put your trust in me. The two reasons I have become so successful in Platina and my business is because of you, the residents, and of course, hard work. When I bring prospective clients to the neighborhood, I have found the best way to close my sale is to stop by and have my clients speak to you, the residents. Always friendly, happy to help and fun, that is how I would describe you. Thank you for a fantastic 20 years! ILUS doyleopensdoors.com

Ambiance: Upon our arrival the hostess did not stop
talking to one of her co-workers to acknowledge our
presence for one to two minutes. However, when
she did realize we were there she showed us to our
table which we had reserved. Menus were presented
and water glasses were filled.
Food: The choices are many from salads, soups, mussels and caprese for starters. Dinner entrees include
choice of soup or salad. There are pasta selections
that you can add meat, chicken or shrimp. Parmesan
choices are chicken, veal, eggplant and shrimp. Fish
choices are plentiful and include shrimp, scallops,
salmon and other fish of the day. The portions are
extremely large and you may want to share an entrée.
Noise Level: Somewhat noisy but not too bad. It was
easy to converse with one another without shouting
at one another.
SERVING PALM BEACH COUNTY RESIDENTS
Cost: Veal Parmesan dinner is $ 19.00 and Chicken
Marsala is the same price. Most of the entrees are in
this price range with fish and shellfish dinners costing a little more. Soup and salads are not included
but are available and also large enough to share.
This is quite a bargain.
Reservations: Are available and gladly accepted.
The table was waiting at the time requested and the
meal was thoroughly enjoyed.

The club held a tournament on
February 17, 2015.
There were
over 40 participants. The winners,
who had to win two out of three
rounds, donated their winning prize
of $100.00 to The Fisher House for
Disabled War Veterans. Pictured
below are the winners.
It is hard to believe that the golf
season for our league is coming to
an end. It has been a fun time. On
March 19 we had another tournament and the winners were: Marty
Karr and Mel Olshan.
Following golf we returned to Platina for a BBQ under Canopy 3. With
food provided by The Cafe. A good time was had
by all.
Even though the official league play ends in April,
golf is played throughout the summer. If you are
interested in joining us please contact Stu Pernick at
740-4787 or Jim McCarthy at 734-9849.
It’s April and we’re still knitting and
crocheting. Come on down and join
us for a relaxing two hours. Besides
doing our craft, we discuss all kinds

We’re here every Tuesday from

seeing you and we promise not to

Was Saturday night the loneliest
night of the week, because that’s
when your baby and you would
dance cheek to cheek? We can correct that. Just dust off your hat, those
dancing shoes, put on the white tie
and the old blue serge. Ladies, put
on those comfortable pumps, those
fancy dresses, tease and spray those lovely tresses.
‘Cause I am going to take you by the hand to the
hottest place in town (the Platina Clubhouse), where
they play the most natural music around. It is so natural that you would think you are at the Savoy Ballroom, the Palladium Dance Hall, or the Glen lsland
Casino.
So you grabbed your hat and coat, left your worries
on the doorstep and directed your feet to that place
in town. Your first attempt was mild and shy, but

Sondra Steinhauer, February’s entertainer, was an
extraordinary performer. She performed without
props or scenery and with only a script at hand,
took us to Hester Street of years ago. Our imaginations were inspired to make us feel that we all lived
in that era. I hope we have her here again next year
as she has many interesting subjects.

Larry Sherman 735-7634
It looked like the setting for a
Hitchcock movie. A grey sky, mist
slowly rising from the damp earth.
Two men, hands deep in pockets,
small clouds of mist emerging from
their nostrils, huddling against a
chainlink fence, staring into the
mist, looking for something or
someone.
Out of the mist a figure approaches, acknow-
ledgements are made, then another figure approaches
and the same acknowledgements are made. In
unison the four walk to what seems to be a structure
of some kind. As the mist rises the structure is the
seldom-used, once-forgotten racquetball courts.
With caution they approach the front wall. Line up
parallel to it. Then they methodically hit the ball to
the front wall down the line from one to another.
This done, they break off in pairs, the first pair to the
front pair of lines the second to the rear line. ”Splat”
the still morning air is broken as the ball hits the front
wall, before the sound is diminished another “splat”
is heard as the ball is returned. This continues for a
short time.
As this is unfolding, three additional figures appear.
One short for another game they position themselves
along the sidelines and wait for the game to end.
Sitting there stone-faced, they look like the three
monkeys “see no evil, hear no evil, and speak no
evil.” To the men sitting watching the game it is four
men frolicking right and left front and rear chasing
a little blue ball. To a patron of the arts they envision
it as a ballet The men lunge, forward and back,
then a series of pirouettes to the right and then to
the left, and sometimes a leap to retrieve the ball.
Pure poetry in motion. As the rising sun engulfs the
courts, they go, exhausted and stimulated, each to
their own activities. And so another day ends.
Lou Cohen

The Season is ending…The Season is
ending. We had our general meeting
on March 10 with elections for next
year and a Scavenger Hunt program
enjoyed by all hosted by Gail Niskar.
Our Snowbird season ended with
our Farewell Murder Mystery Luncheon. This was a new format for
our club so that all our members could enjoy saying
goodbye in a fun, informal and interactive way by
solving the mystery. A professional acting company
was hired to perform the play and Harvey catered
the luncheon. I want to thank Harvey and his staff
for a job well done.
Our season runs from November through March and
is open to all Platina residents and renters. Our dues
are still $15 per person. Next season we are working
on a full schedule of activities, including speakers,
plays, dinners, dances, cruises, comedy nights, and
equestrian events. We will be updating our members over the summer on these events once they are
formalized. I want to thank the board of Gail Niskar,
Cindy Pernick, Phil Sudberg, Alan Merdek, Bobbie Hirshberg and Mike Gere and all our event hosts this year
of Fay Tepper, Barbara Disman, Lee and Vic Blumenthal,
Cindy Pernick and Joyce Merdek for all their hard work
over the season. Also, thank you to everyone who
set up the refreshments each meeting. We look forward to a new and exciting 2015-2016 season. See

The Tennis/Pickleball Club is constantly gaining new members. Most
days all the courts are filled. The
past mixed doubles with Banyan
Springs have been so successful that
another mixed doubles, followed by
a lunch, was held on March 17.
We had the largest turnout in many
years at our barbecue on March 10.
The tennis pro from Banyan Springs
and his wife, along with other people from Banyan
Springs, attended our barbecue.
Another tennis round robin at Platina will be held
the second Sunday in April if enough people are
available to play.
We are still playing pickleball the first, third, and
fourth Sunday mornings of each month at 9:00a.m.
Some players are beginning to set up games during the week also. All Platina residents, beginners
to advanced, are welcome to join us. For information, contact Jack Tepper at 737-8282 or Joyce Merdek
at 738-2188.

Milt Bankoff, George Peshkin, Marc Perla and Barbara
Ann Bovino for scenic designs and background and

Bernice Wolfson (Miss Tutu) who wrote the show,

costumes, knickk nacks and lots more. Eileen Sperling with help from Jackie Kinzer and Sandy Greene
for ticket sales. (Now my married life can return to
normal.) Patricia, Nilda and Genna Hofmann and
her staff for all their assistance and cooperation.

Just for Laughs

A highway patrolman pulled alongside a speeding
car on the freeway. Glancing at the car, he was astounded to see that the woman behind the wheel
was knitting. Realizing she was oblivious to his
flashing lights and siren, the trooper cranked down
his window, turned on his bullhorn and yelled
“PULL OVER.” “NO!” the woman yelled back, “IT’S
A SCARF!”
Nigel and Stephen are keen fishermen and drinkers.
Last year they were on holiday with their wives in
France. While they were enjoying some night fishing,
Nigel announces, “I think I’m going to divorce my
wife, she hasn’t spoken to me in eighteen months.”
Stephen downs his glass of the red wine thoughtfully and after a while responds, “Think it over a bit
more Nigel; women like that are hard to find.”

This guy was pulled over for running a stop sign.
When the cop checked the man’s driver’s license, he
said, “You’re wearing glasses on your ID and you’re
not now. I’m going to give you a ticket.” The guy
said, “Officer, I have contacts.” The cop said, “Look
buddy, I don’t care who you know, I’m giving you a
ticket.”

Another month, another group of bizarre holidays
for you to enjoy. It all begins with April 1st, April
Fool’s Day, followed by many less known celebrations. Have fun with these:
3rd Week of April … Medical Lab Week. Down here
in Florida, I think almost every week celebrates this
important holiday.
4/1, International Tatting Day … That’s “tatting”
and not “tattling,” folks. Make all the lace you can
and our Handcrafts Club will thank you!
4/6, “Sorry Charlie” Day … No one takes rejection
easily, but this is a day when you can tell people …
like Cher told Nicholas Cage in Moonstruck … “Get
over it”!
4/7, No Housework Day … This is a holiday that is
celebrated frequently here at Platina, so let’s keep up
this tradition.
4/10, National Sibling Day … No matter how many
times this is included in these listings, it never is said
often enough. Cherish your brothers and sisters; they
are the only ones who you can share so many parts of
your life with! Give them a call!
4/17, Bat Appreciation Day … No, these bats don’t
belong with baseballs; they are the fuzzy little
nocturnal things, some as small as your fingernail,
that you find “hanging” around attics, caves and
other dark places. They use a form of radar to seek
out their food (mosquitos) at night. P.S. I don’t have
any in my belfry!
3rd Week of April, Patriot’s Day … Widely
celebrated in the New England States (see page 13
for article).
4/26, Richter Scale Day … This day commemorates
the birthday of Charles F. Richter, in 1900. In 1935 he
invented the Richter Scale, which measures the
amount of energy released by an earthquake.
4/28, Great Poetry Reading Day … I would be
happy to meet with you and read my many poems in
celebration of this day. Maybe Mal Schneider will join
me!
The important thing is to keep celebrating, whatever
the occasion. If you encounter some lemons along
the way, add a spoonful of sugar and make lemonade! Till next time, enjoy!

COMPUTER
TALK
Submitted by Rhoda Fisher
By Lee Peterman
You are always hearing the same things from me, but
again, I reiterate: Be careful with your passwords,
change them frequently, and use something easy for
you to remember. That being said, from last month’s
column, also applies to security questions as well.
Let’s talk about security questions. When you fill
out the answers to those questions, you think no one
but you know the true answer. Not necessarily true!
Hackers get all kinds of answers from your Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc. On Facebook your best
friend may reminisce about your shared childhood
and talk about your mom’s maiden name which
came up because it was common (or funny, or hard
to spell, etc.). So what to do? LIE. but be sure to
remember what the lie is.
1.
2.
3.
4.
What was your childhood best friend’s name?
What is your mother’s maiden name?
What was your first pet’s name?
Where did you meet your spouse?
So what answers should you use for the above questions. Make up something, here are mine. I bet if
you were trying to hack into my account you would
never guess these answers:
1. Diamonds are a girl’s................ (get it?)
2. Taste it. It’s good……………………….
3. Dog will eat it........................
4. Zip lining.........................
For peace of mind, cease being general manager of
the universe.
Live without pretending. Love without depending.
Listen without defending. Speak without offending.
What we anticipate seldom occurs., what we least
expected generally happens. Benjamin Disraeli
Be careful; think about the effect of what you say.
Your words should be constructive, bring people together, not pull them apart. Miriam Makeba
Life for most of us is full of steep stairs to go puffing up and, later, of shaky stairs to totter down; and
very early in the history of stairs must have come the
invention of banisters. Jaques Maritain
People are always asking about the good old days. I
say, why don’t you say the good “now” days? Isn’t
“now” the only time you’re living? Robert M. Young
The trick of living is to slip on and off the planet with
the least fuss you can muster. I’m not a professional
philanthropist, and I’m not running for sainthood. I
just happen to think that in life we need to be a little
like the farmer who puts back into the soil what he
takes out. Paul Newman
So, be safe, don’t be sorry and remember not to carry
your social security card in your wallet.
RICH LEWIS (Continued from page 19)
And here at Platina? “I’m a racquetball player and
try to play at least three times a week. I’m also a
member of the Computer Club. But for now, my
main interest is in investing which keeps me
economically going (for the time being). Let’s hope
it lasts!” Good Luck, Richard!

and the little fan kept going. Of course she frantically pressed buttons. She then hit the alarm, but no one heard except herself. There was a yellow piece of paper, on which she noticed a phone number. She called that number and it was, she believes, the service company. No help offered from that call. Roz says her brain clicked on and she picked up the phone and called 911. The police department connected her with the fire rescue. Now our good guy enters the fray. He asked her the location and pertinent info. She said she was an old lady, (not true) well maybe, and she was claus‐
trophobic. He said he would get someone right out and told her, ʺDonʹt hang up and I am not going to leave you until someone arrives.ʺ He stayed on the phone, talking about his mother and father and other friendly chatter. She remained hysterical and nervous, but his conversation kept her from break‐
ing. When help shortly arrived it turned out she was between the second and third floor. They manually opened the door and lifted her out, since she was between floors. I watched Roz the other day as she entered our building and walked up the steps to the third floor. „ PAGE 22

from walking. With her walker in tow, she took
part and completed the whole circuit. “It was a
great experience,” she said. “I with I could do it
every day!” One day at a time, Norma! Jerry
Lewis, who was featured with his wife in last
month’s Platina Post, told us that he had participated in 10 marathons while in the Marine
Corps, “And now this is my second one here in

“A Walk-a-Thon doesn’t get done by itself,”
said Sylvia Hunt. “There are so many people
who helped. First, my co-chairman, Norm Sachs,
thank you for all your time, effort, ideas and
dedication; to CERT, COP and our Safety &
Security Committee, thanks for monitoring the
Walk, making sure everyone was ‘safe and
secure’; to Irma Sachs and Arlene Ehrlich, for handling the water situation; to our team in the
clubhouse … Cyntha Beberman, Rose Brager, Judy
Sobel, Charlotte Macaluso and Cindy Pernick; and
to Sonny Seidman, for our flyers.” It takes many
hands and hearts to put together an event such
as this. Added Sylvia, “Our thanks to the Joys of
Yiddish Club for supplying the refreshments,
and to Harvey from our Café for the coffee and
tea (he walked also!). This was the first time
PCMA sponsored our Walk; we thank you
PCMA.”
Said Genna Hofmann, Platina’s General Manager, “It is an exciting event and a wonderful
charity. It’s great to see such community
involvement.” And, of course, to Sylvia and
Norm, our heartfelt thanks for your commitment and dedication.
