ou will find an entirely different experience in Allamakee County,
the Northeast corner of Iowa! Deeply carved river valleys,

spectacular views of bluffs, the longest trout stream in the state,
and the only National Monument in Iowa.

Besides our natural surroundings, Allamakee County offers quaint
downtowns, one of a kind shops and history that may surprise you. Did you
know that Jefferson Davis spent time in Allamakee County? Davis was sent
to Allamakee County to open the first saw mill west of the Mississippi River
because he was courting President Zachary Tyler’s daughter. Despite Tyler’s
effort, they did end up getting married on June 17, 1835.
We hope you find this brochure a useful and educational resource that will entice
you to visit Allamakee County. We, Allamakee County Economic Development &
Tourism (ACED), are proud to promote our wonderful county and we hope you

Within the 1861 structure, one will discover
rooms furnished to reflect the 19th and
early 20th century, displays of farm tools,
military items, medical room, and the court
room-complete with the judge’s bench, chair
and gavel. The courthouse was the center
of a great controversy between the cities of
Waukon and Lansing. Both cities claimed to
be the County seat; each raised funds and
built courthouses with Lansing completing
theirs first. In June of 1866, after ten county
seat contests, a posse of 30 men on
horseback seized all the county records and
took them to this Waukon courthouse. The
Iowa Supreme Court later intervened in the
dispute, making Waukon the official county
seat. Locals today
will still speak of
the brazen action!
The 2,526-acre park is divided into two
units (North and South) by the Yellow River.
Although most
Indian mound
groups involve
hiking along
relatively long and
steep trails, three
burial mounds
are accessible
directly behind
the Visitor Center.
Hiking trails
offer modest to
extended routes,
allowing you to
select your route
and view a variety
of mounds. An accessible boardwalk trail
into the wetlands near the Visitor Center is
available for disabled visitors and persons of
all walking abilities. Open year-round.
Black Hawk Bridge

No visit to Allamakee County would be
complete without stopping at Iowa’s only
national Monument, Effigy Mounds National
Monument. There are 206 known prehistoric
Native American Indian mounds within the
borders of the park, 31 of which are shaped
in the likeness (effigy) of bears or birds.
IA-9/WI-82 Mississippi River Crossing, Lansing
Completed in 1931 at the cost of nearly
$750,000. The Black Hawk Bridge crosses
the Mississippi River with a design that has
attracted not only local, but national attention
for its beauty. The cantilever structure spans
the Mississippi, joining the states of Iowa and
Wisconsin. The bridge was named in honor
of the great Sauk leader, Chief Black Hawk
and is popularly referred to as the “Lansing
Bridge”. The bridge roadway is 21 feet wide
with a minimum vertical clearance of 18.5
feet and has a total length, including the main
channel crossing and approach spans, of
1,623 feet.

Fish Farm Mounds
State Preserve
Hwy 26, 3 miles S. of New Albin
A 3-acre prehistoric cemetery (mound group)
located in the southern portion of the 576-acre
Fish Farm Mounds Wildlife Area. The Preserve
contains a cluster of 30 conical mounds of
various sizes, which were built by Native
Americans from 100 B.C. to 650 A.D. The
Wildlife Area is mostly wooded and is abundant
with wildlife, making it a popular hunting area.
Site includes picnic shelters and limited hiking
and walking trails.
River as the dividing line, giving Iowa a good
portion of what is now southern Minnesota.
Minnesotans wanted to use the 42nd parallel
as the border, giving them the city of Dubuque
& Northern Iowa. In 1849, Captain Thomas
J. Lee settled the matter by establishing the
border at 43 degrees and 30 minutes north
latitude. To solidify his mark, Lee purchased a
cast-iron monument on October 19, 1849 and
had it installed on the border. This 600-pound
cast-iron post marks “Minnesota” on the north,
“Iowa” on the south and “1849” & “43-30”
(latitude) on the sides. This is the only original
marker remaining on the northern boundary
line of the State of Iowa.

For many years, the border between Iowa
and Minnesota was hotly disputed. Iowans
urged the government to use the Minnesota

Lansing’s unique history as a river
town comes to life in this specialized
museum, featuring a collection of
memorabilia from the early development
of the town. Authentic wooden boats
and artifacts offer visitors a glimpse
at the early clamming and clamshell
button industries, as well as commercial
fishing and ice harvesting. An extensive
photograph collection documents the growth
of this river town, which was an important ferry
point for immigrants crossing the Mississippi
River in the early days of westward expansion.

Gjefle Log Cabin
(with the Courthouse Museum)
This two-story cabin was originally built by
Norwegian immigrants. It housed as many
as 15 people at a single time between 1870
and 1886. Cabin was moved to its present
site in 1990.
legally purchase the building for town hall
purposes alone. Thus, the building served two
purposes, town hall and as a memorial for
the community’s veterans, hence the name
“Memorial Hall.” The property was added to
National Register of Historic Places in 2000.
Sandy Point Cemetery
(Historically known as Harpers Ferry Cemetery)
Southern end of Sandy Point Rd,
Harpers Ferry
Surrounded by a modest, black iron fence
and shaded by tall oak trees, two very
different histories are juxtaposed at this point.
Buried in this small cemetery is David Harper,
an influential businessman known for his large
merchandising business of produce. The
town was named after Mr. Harper in 1860
and he is still regarded as a leading spirit in
the development of Harpers Ferry and his
gravestone still stands in dignified grandeur.
But it is what surrounds Mr. Harper’s gravesite
that makes this cemetery so unusual: seven
ceremonial Native
American mounds.
As many as 2500
years before the
settlement of
Harpers Ferry, this
land along the
great river was
occupied by Native
Americans. From
the Woodland
Period, the people
are known for
their subsistence
horticulture, ceramics production, diversified
hunting/gathering and their extensive trade
networks. Midwest archaeological evidence
has revealed materials and artifacts from
as far west as the area now known as
Yellowstone National Park. These people
also built earthen structures called “mounds.”
Archaeologists speculate that the mounds
found at Sandy Point Cemetery, like many
other area mounds, were constructed not
only as refuges for the dead, but as territorial
boundaries between groups.
Turner Memorial Hall
119 E. Greene St., Postville
Built in 1913, the building shows the
predominance of the German-American
culture. In 1940 the hall was offered to
the town for a reasonable sum. Under the
Iowa Code of laws, the town could not

Wexford Immaculate
Conception Church
1416 Co. Hwy. X52, Harpers Ferry
This Immaculate Conception Church located
in an area called Wexford is reportedly the
oldest Catholic Church between Dubuque,
Iowa and St. Paul, Minnesota. Located nine
miles south of Lansing just off the Great River
Road, this little stone church is perfectly
perched above a charismatic Allamakee
County valley. A creek runs along nearby, the
sun cascades over the woodland, the road
hugs the landscape and it isn’t hard to see
why Irish settlers chose this special site to
start their community. The church’s simple,
elegant interior is full of calm, especially when
the late afternoon beams of sunlight stream
through the intricate stained glass. Make
sure to notice the framed port record on
the back wall which lists all the Ticonderoga
ship passengers who sailed from Liverpool,
England to New Orleans in the winter of 1850.
It is many of these listed individuals who
deemed this valley their final destination. They
constructed a small log church in 1851 under
the direction of their pastor Father Thomas
Hore. The church you see standing today,
completed in 1870, was the third church built
at this location.

obtain permission from property owners before going on the property.
Arthur Wendel Residence
611 Dodge St., Lansing
Constructed in 1870 in Second Empire Style, this
home presently a private, multiple-family dwelling.
Center Baptist Church
1555 Trout Rd, Lansing
Established in 1853 - the second oldest
Swedish Baptist Church in America. This
church building was dedicated in 1912.
Daniel Brennan Residence
491 N. Front St., Lansing
Constructed in 1870 as a single family residence, this Italianate Style mansion continues
to serve as a private single-family dwelling.
G. Kerndt & Brothers
General Store
391 Main St., Lansing
Constructed in 1861 as a general store,
this Vernacular style building is listed on the
National Register of Historic Places. With its
attractive exterior and open interior, the space
is often used as a community center.

Grain Elevator
the Mississippi River, was constructed of locally quarried limestone and of oak and white
pine materials. It opened in 1864 and was
used continuously as a school for 108 years,
closing in 1973. Greek Revival Style; listed on
the National Register of Historic Places.
Alberta House
Country RD. A-26 (intersection of A-26 &
Lycurgus Rd.), rural New Albin
This originally intended wayside hotel served
as a refuge for frightened settlers during the
New Ulm Massacre (Sioux) on September
1, 1862. Built by E.T. Albert four years prior
to the massacre, it features three-foot-thick
stone walls.
Colsch Log House
2774 Hwy. 26 (east side of rd.), rural New Albin
Constructed in 1858 Elijah Fish (originally
called Elijah Fish Log Cabin), the 1 ½ story
log house sits on land surveyed by Nathaniel
Boone, son of Daniel Boone.
New Albin Town Hall
NW corner of Main St. & Ross Ave., New Albin
Used until 1969, this 1895 structure
features a bell tower in the Vernacular Style
with elements of Greek Revival Influence.
Building contains just three rooms: the jail, a
marshal’s office and council room.
60-90 Front St., Lansing
This Vernacular Style stone and brick
structure originally weighed and loaded
steamboats and late rail traffic. The structure
was constructed in 1868 and is listed on the
National Register of Historic Places.
Landmark Inn & Gun House
1172 Hwy 9, rural Lansing Township
A Federal Style structure built in 1851. The
front section was built as the private residence
by Col. John Wakefield. Historians say
Wakefield was a childhood friend of Abraham
Lincoln and commissioned by the President
during the Civil War. The rear section was
added in 1854 and has been a brewery, hotel,
store and post office. The house is now a
single family residence.The stone structure
directly behind the Landmark Inn is the Gun
House, constructed in 1851. Supposedly built
by Col. Wakefield to defend against Native
American uprisings following his participation in
the Blackhawk Wars.
Lansing Stone School
509 Center St., Lansing
The Stone school was built in 1863, by Thomas Gotlieb Engelhorn for a cost of $5,000.

Barnes Octagon House
Reburn 12-Sided Barn
1641 Pool Hill Dr., rural New Albin
This unique 12-sided, beef cattle barn was
built by Tom Reburn in 1941. Some of the
timber and sheeting lumber was taken from
Reburn’s father’s barn. With a 46 foot diameter, the barn is capable of feeding 50 cattle
at one time. Interior of the barn has a circular
feed aisle and hay mound with a circular track
for the hay fork. This structure is listed on the
National Register of Historic Places.
22 E. Main St., Waukon
This Stone Italianate house was constructed
in 1865. The house was built with local
limestone and the foundation is 20-foot
bedrock while the walls were quarried from
the basement site. The house was built
for Thomas H. Barnes, an early settler of
Waukon and local physician. Barnes served
in the Civil War and built the house upon
returning to Waukon. Today the house
serves as a dental office.
John R Mott House
265 W. Williams St., Postville
This Victorian Style two-story frame house was
constructed in 1867 and was the boyhood
home of former Postville resident, Dr. John
Raleigh Mott (1865-1955). Dr. Mott received
the1946 Nobel Peace Prize for founding the
World Council of Churches. Hailed as an international religious leader, Dr. Mott was recognized for his service in church and missionary
movements. Identified with a bronze plaque
and is now a private apartment building known
as Mott Manor. The building also once served
as a hospital. Visitors are allowed only to look
at the exterior from the sidewalk or road.
Roger Kolarich Home
111 E. Tilden St., Postville
Constructed in 1872 by Fodfrey Stadt, this
two story frame home in Victorian Gothic
Style includes a stage. Stadt’s son enjoyed
performing one-person shows, so Stadt
had the stage built for his son. The building
presently serves as a dental office.
Old East Paint Creek
Lutheran Church
1799 Elon Dr., County Rd. A-52, Waterville
Constructed in 1869, structure is considered
Gothic Style and listed on the National
Register of Historic Places. This was the first
church constructed for Norwegian settlers in
Allamakee County.

Otto J. Hager House
Constructed in 1908 the brick Prairie SchoolStyle home was designed by prominent
architect Robert C. Spenser of Chicago.
Property is listed on the National Register
of Historic Places and presently a private

Bird Watching
You will find many prime locations to sit and
watch the birds! Whether it be eagles or
hawks, or any other familiar birds, you can sit
by the Mississippi River and take it all in! Effigy
Mounds National Monument offers an annual
“Hawk Watch” weekend. They also have a bird
conservation area. The US Fish and Wildlife
Refuge, along the Mississippi River, is home
to hundreds of species. The City of Lansing
also hosts an annual “Rivers & Bluffs Birding
Festival” each November.

Fishing
Allamakee County boasts some of the most
beautiful and plentiful trout streams. Named
the second most visited county by Trout
Anglers in the State of Iowa, it’s a true angler’s
paradise, dotted with miles and miles of trout
streams. Some are easily accessible in state
or county parks, and others are located wild
and remote natural spaces. Iowa trout streams
offer rainbow, brown and brook trout, both
naturally reproducing and stocked. For the
non trout angler, Pool 9 of the Mississippi
River offers major species of bluegill, channel
catfish, crappie, freshwater drum, largemouth
bass, northern pike, sauger, smallmouth bass
and walleye. Minor species of flathead catfish,
rock bass, white bass, yellow perch can also
be caught. Free fishing weekend is the first full
weekend in June for Iowa residents.
Morel MushroomS
These edible mushrooms grow in the spring.
The cap of morels are holey or spongy looking
with hollow stems. They are typically found
in moist areas, around dying or dead elm
trees, sycamore and
ash trees, old apple
orchards. Morels
once picked keep for
two to three days,
according to Iowa
State University.
Poisonous false
morels also grow
in the same areas
during the same
time of year. Obtain
permission prior to
entering any privately
owned land.
Wild Game
Allamakee County boasts a
large population of wild turkeys,
pheasants, duck, geese and other
small game. With the vast amount
of public land, support from land
owners and hunting aficionados,
Allamakee is a prime destination for
wild game. When hunting, follow
all laws, regulations and landowner
directives. Hunting licenses can be
purchased at numerous outlets.

A spectacular panoramic view of 50 miles of
the beautiful Mississippi River valley rewards
visitors who take the side trip up to the 104acre Mount Hosmer City Park, situated on
a bluff 450 feet above the town of Lansing.
The park is named for Harriet Hosmer, a
sculptress, who won a footrace to the summit
of the hill during a steamboat layover during
the 1850s. Savor the natural beauty of the
Mississippi and watch the river boats go by
from this scenic overlook. Amenities include
restrooms, shelter, telescopes and veteran
memorials. A large lighted American Flag flies
high above the bluff and can be seen from the
Wisconsin side of the River. Park is managed
and maintained by the City of Lansing.
Nobles Island Public

A public boat landing on the Mississippi River
located five miles South of Harpers Ferry. In
addition to two boat launching ramps, the area
also offers shoreline fishing access, picnicking
spots, and restrooms (pit latrines) for public

timberland a lovely place to visit. Year-round
camping is available, and hikers, equestrians,
snowmobilers and cross-country skiers are
sure to appreciate the extensive trail system.

This two mile gravel trail takes you out into the
Mississippi River floodplains and backwaters.
It is just one small portion of the 660 acre
Pool Slough Wildlife Management Area. The
trail crosses wetlands, sloughs (areas of soft
muddy ground), then winds its way through
a floodplain forest. The end of the trail will
provide a parking lot, boat ramp and fishing
platform. Bring your boat and this landing
will be the start of your adventure into Reno
Bottoms’ backwaters.
Mississippi River Trail
(MRT) • 280 miles (Bike)
The MRT provides an opportunity for you
to safely bike one of the Nation’s most
spectacular roadways, the Great River Road.
Although this bike trail does not yet stretch
the length of Iowa, you can access the MRT
in New Albin and bike all the way to Lansing,
then ride into Harpers Ferry and south. Hop
on again just south of McGregor and ride to
Guttenberg. It provides opportunities for you
to enjoy bluff top views of the Mississippi River
or get up close and personal with the river.

This 14 mile trail has three take-out points
along the trail. From April to early June,
Millstone and New Albin Army Road Landings
are frequently under water. You should take
out at Visger’s Landing during high water. Pick
up a map before your adventure so you can
find your way through the maze of islands and
backwaters. Plans are to extend the canoe
trail to Harpers Ferry Effigy Mounds National

Canoeing the Upper Iowa River was recognized by National Geographic Adventure
magazine as one of the top 100 adventures
in North America. Canoeist should expect
to share the river with kayakers, tubers, and
anglers. Spending time on the water and
camping on the river is a regular family affair
for some, a weekend adventure with friends
for others. Local youth spend endless hours
on the most popular stretches. The towns on
the river welcome visitors, and many provide
camping and lodging opportunities. The Allamakee section of the Upper Iowa is where
the valley widens and the bluffs rise further
away from the river. Take a canoe trail in the

Yellow River Water Trail

The longest cold water trout stream in Iowa,
the Yellow River also has the highest gradient
of any canoeable stream in Iowa. The lower
35 miles offer challenging rapids, limestone
cliffs, towering bluffs, mature hardwood forests,
combined with high clarity water make this a
superior experience. The history of this river
is rich with prehistoric Indian Mounds, French
fur Traders and the first sawmill in Iowa. For a

The Driftless Area Scenic Byway is a
100-mile zigzag route known for its
natural and scenic attractions. The byway curves,
twists and meanders
through the most Northeast
corner of Iowa in Allamakee
County, the heart of a region
know as the “Driftless Area”.
The term Driftless was
developed to describe this
distinct region of gashed
and furrowed terrain that
was by-passed by the last continental
glacier that passed over the state of
Iowa, centuries ago.
The byway stretches out across
bluffs, hills, rivers, and valleys.
The streams and river valleys
have carved down into the land
encompassing the byway, giving
travelers an opportunity to view
some of the most esthetically
appealing high relief landscape
found anywhere within the state.
These geographic features reward
byway travelers with countless
panoramic vistas and expansive
views of hillside pastures, hardwood forests, majestic limestone
bluffs, outcroppings and scenic
river valleys. As might be expected,
these natural wonders also provide
many outdoor recreation opportunities.
You can hike miles of state forest trails,
fish for trout in cold water stream,
explore the Mississippi, Yellow and Upper Iowa Rivers by boat or simply relax
and enjoy the peaceful natural scenery.
Fall is an especially scenic time on the
byway as the hardwood timbers
blaze with color.
While driving this roller-coaster
road, you will discover historic
gems nestled within the rugged
land. The byway embraces
five quaint, historic communities
that provide opportunities to experience shopping, entertainment, local
foods, town events, festivals and
reenactments. Such events provide an
insight to the region’s heritage, as do

the dozens of unique mom-and-pop
shops and diners. Human settlement
of the area began thousands of years
ago. Just outside of Harpers Ferry,
Effigy Mounds National Monument
features a collection of animal-shaped
mounds built by prehistoric Native
Americans. The landscape is

those who have settled in the
area since that time. You will
find historic stone churches,
pioneer cemeteries and unique
bridges, as well as museums
