In Nicaragua, known as the “Land of Lakes and
Volcanoes,” many would presume water is
abundant. However, for much of Nicaragua’s
population, water is not easily accessible, nor has
the required quality for human consumption.
• Approximately 800,000 people in Nicaragua
don’t have access to safe water.
• About 125 children in Nicaragua die each year
from diarrhea caused by unsafe water and poor
sanitation.
• 3 in 5 of people living in rural Nicaragua do not
have access to proper sanitation facilities.
• Over 25% of the existing water systems are
located in basins suffering from the devastation
of deforestation.
• 1 in 3 people living in rural Nicaragua do not
have access to clean drinking water.
ANF, with the support of its partners and donors,
has contributed to providing clean drinking water
to approximately 81,000 people through the
installation of 3,400 household-level water
connections and water systems, and the building
of 109 water wells.
However, this is just a fraction of the number of
people who still do not have access to one of life’s
most precious resources: safe drinking water.
“And whoever in the name of a disciple
gives to one of these little ones even a cup
of water to drink, truly I say to you,
he shall not lose his reward.”
–Matthew 10:42
