Dear Friends, Kaleidoscope Sunday is a wonderful celebration
of what we believe to be our calling as Christians: to reach out
to newcomers and the community with pastoral, educational
and outreach ministries that truly make a difference in peoples’
lives, and to strengthen our members with programs that nurture and challenge, all in the context of elegant and moving worship experiences. Some opportunities presented appeal to personal preferences, needs and interests: most
adult opportunities, for instance. Some are offered to age groups and family situations: Children’s Choirs,
First Wednesday Family Nights, Acolytes, Youth Group and Sunday School, for instance. Do try to be present this Sunday to explore and learn how St. George’s can help you “Gather, Discover and Serve.”

FLOWER GUILD LOOKING FOR H ELPERS
Do You Like To Garden? Then Give Us A Call.
The flower guild is currently looking for helpers to assist them with caring for the flowers in the Sanctuary.
No major commitment is involved. All a volunteer has to do is come out to the church 2-3 times a week and
water the flowers in the church. How hard could that be? So sign up now and help out the ladies who make
our church a beautiful place to worship.

Teams, Antiques Arcade, Family Ministries, Pastoral Care Team and all the
different ways in which you and your
family members can become involved in the ministries and activities of parish Life for children, teens and adults at St. George’s. This year’s theme is Tropical so grab
those leis, wear your wildest Hawaiian shirt, and come celebrate a new year of “Gathering, Discovering
and Serving,” and find a ministry to call your own! Lunch will be provided, donations welcomed. Exultemus will play at the 10 am service. Reminder: Set up for Ministry Displays is Friday and Saturday, 9am—
1pm.Ministry and Mission Administrator Wendel Stoltz will address the congregation this Sunday and talk
about the importance of lay ministry and how everyone can become more actively involved in our Parish.

Sept. 7 is National Grandparents Day, Don’t Miss A Chance To Expand Your Family
Not everyone in our parish is fortunate enough to have grandparents or grandchildren living
nearby. Some don’t have any at all. It is a very good thing for young people to be in touch with
older people, and vice-versa. Consider
signing up with Jen Matthews, Children’s and Family Ministry Coordinator, to adopt a grandchild or grandparent. September 7 is National Grandparents Day and Jen is planning a series
of events to promote fellowship. If you adopt a grandchild or grandparent you might

At noon on Sept. 7, Adopted Grandparents/children are invited to gather in the Parish Hall for

Flying Solo is the single women's group of St. George's. A fun group gathering once a month ...usually in a member's
home....with occasional restaurant outings. All single women are welcome - widowed, divorced, never married. Flying Solo also has a quarterly outreach program such as goody bags for the elderly of MIFA, contributing to
the Thomas Lambert fund and the Feed the Hungry program for La Campana, the St. George's kitchen outside San
Miguel de Allende.

EPISCOPAL YOUTH COMMUNITY (EYC) NEWS
Car Wash a Sudsy Success
Happenings Registration Due This Friday
August 29th-31st (Friday-Sunday)--Happenings at St. Columbia
Conference Center. Happening is a renewal weekend that provides teens (10-12th graders) with a way to explore their spirituality while living and learning with others their age who want to
share the faith they've found in Jesus Christ. Teens lead all the
activities, including small group discussion, large group activities,
and singing. The environment is open and honest, as the adults
present serve in the background roles of cooks and chaperones.
Two priests serve as spiritual directors. Those who have attended
find it to be an uplifting, and fun, experience.
Phillip George, who is our youth DYC representative, has attended Happenings several times, and recommends it! Happening is offered twice per year, August and February. If you can't make the one this August (Labor Day weekend),
please consider attending the February Happening.
Registration is due by Friday, August 15th. Contact Patty Cowen for an application (759-1455).

August 22nd (Friday)--Christian rock concert featuring hip hop/rap artists Family Force 5, Lecrae and special guest
Cayerio. Meet at 6 pm to carpool to Hope Church on Walnut Grove Road, or meet EYC at Hope (plan for lots of
traffic). Both Jr. and Sr. EYC invited. Group rate $7 in advance. ~ $10 at the door.
August 23rd (Saturday)--Join us for the DYC Fall Kickoff Cook-out and Water Olympics at St. Columba 11am2pm at Gates Pavilion, Grades 6-12. Cost $12 which will be covered by EYC with advanced registration (sign up
sheet in EYC room at St. George's or email Patty Cowan at [email protected] by Friday August 22nd). Parents
to carpool to St. Columba are needed.
August 24th (Sunday)--Pitch in and help with the activities and games at Kaleidoscope Sunday, both Jr. and Sr.
EYC'ers needed. 11 am-12noon.

N EW OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDY AND GROWTH
Women’s Tuesday Bible Group Starts, EFM Registers New Students
New Women's Bible Study Group(s) Start
The new Women's Bible Study Group will meet on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9 pm beginning
next Tuesday, August 19. A Wednesday morning group will start on September 3 from 10 am –
12 noon. Both groups will be held at Amy Morse’s home at 8441 Sandy Berry Cove in Germantown. The groups will start with a study of the book The Patriarchs by Beth Moore. The Study
guides are available at the Lifeway store on Winchester or online at www.Lifeway.com. Participants should read the introduction prior to coming to the first session. The sessions will run until
after Christmas and will meet the first and third Tuesday and Wednesday of the month. Each of
the study groups are limited to 12 persons and places are available. If you are interested in participating in either group, call Amy at 756-5849
Education for Ministry (EFM) Begins Sept 8—Join us to Explore Your Faith
Education for Ministry (EFM) will be enrolling three new students this year and has just an additional 1 or 2 slots
available for the 2008-2009 program year which begins Monday, Sept. 9 To allow time for ordering materials and
preparing for the first session, the registration deadline will be Sunday, August 24 for new participants.
Education for Ministry (EFM) is, according to the “official” definition, a four-year program offered through the University of the South at Sewanee which focuses on theological education and development for lay persons. The studies include Old Testament, New Testament, Church History and Contemporary Theological Issues. Here at St.
George’s, EFM is a community which meets weekly to learn, worship, support, and challenge each other to grow in
faith and identify ways each of us is called to minister. We meet weekly, on Monday evenings, from 6:45 pm to
8:45 pm in Meeting Room C. Our participants are very involved in St. George’s ministries, as well as outreach efforts to the wider community.

1st Wednesdays’ Family Nights to Resume Sept 3
Family Ministry will be hosting a new Family Forum series with Dr. Richard Hathcock September—November.

About the speaker:
Dr. Richard Hathcock has spent 2007 and 2008 lecturing extensively across the state on nutrition, health, exercise and
overall wellness. He is a Chiropractor who deals first with a patient's pain then helps them find a lifestyle goal and
tries to help them succeed. Dr. Richard is originally from Memphis (Raleigh) and was on a baseball and cheerleading
scholarship at Lambuth University when he decided what to do with his life. Dr. Richard practices with Cole Chiropractic Center in Cordova, is married to Stephanie, has two children Caroline Grace (5) and Thomas (2) .

The Arcade is St. George’s largest fundraiser for outreach ministries - since its inception in 1972 it has raised more
than $500,000 for local charities and parish projects. This year’s Arcade is truly historic with
