There’ s an admission fee, but the grounds include the residence, storehouses, a boiler room, a small wax-making room and so on, and you can learn how wax used to be made. There’ s also a rest area. 3-E Culture Exchange Villa (Takahashi Residence) 3-E Old Streets of Yōkaichi and Gokoku 文化交流ヴィラ「高橋邸」 The birthplace of Yoshihiraou Takahashi, known as the saint of Uchiko, and his son Ryutaro (President of the former Dainippon Beer Company and Minister of Inter national Trade and Industry). Donated to Uchiko by his family, it’ s currently run as a café and place to stay. 八日市・護国の町並み Pleasant strolling around attractive old streets In 1982, the government designated this area an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. It’ s representative of similar districts in Ehime. This area flourished from the end of the Edo to the Meiji period through the production of wax. This former highway is lined for about 600 m with merchant houses in their original state. 5 Important national cultural property Honhaga Residence A home built by a wealthy Uchiko wax merchant. It was built in 1889, in the Meiji period. The decorative roof tiles and plaster reliefs attest to the prosperity of those times. 3-E 3-E Museum of Commercial & Domestic Life Uchiko-no-Wa Handicraftsmen's House 商いと暮らし博物館 うちこの和 手しごと職人の家 Opened in 2014 as a base for an organization of handiwork artisans in Uchiko. Many delicate, handmade crafts are on sale. Using this merchant house from the late Edo to Meiji period as it was, the life of a pharmacist has been recreated with mannequins and tools from those times. There are footpaths to the waterwheels, and rest areas too. The waterwheels drive mills for rice and so on, and you can go inside and look at them up-close. UCHIKO UCHIKO 3-E Ikazaki Kite Museum 五十崎凧博物館 Discover the history and attraction of kites The kite fighting of Uchiko is famous across Japan. A blade is attached to the string, which is used to cut the strings of opponents. This museum exhibits kites and the equipment used for the kite fights, and kites from around the world. You can also try your hand at making a kite (reservation required). 9 3-E Tenjin Paper Factory 天神産紙工場 Ozu washi paper keeps alive the skills of traditional artisans The fighting kites of Ikazaki The Ikazaki kite fight is one of the few such events in Japan. The kite in the photograph is used for fighting. There’ s also a Shinto blessing, kite dance, and taiko drumming. Ozu washi paper has been made since the Heian Period. Here you can watch the traditional method of making washi by hand (reservation required). The souvenir shop opposite also sells washi paper. It makes nice interior decoration. 10 Try your hand at making washi At the Tenjin paper factory, you can try making traditional Ozuwashi for 500 yen per time. The artisans help so it’ s easy even the first time. You need a reservation, but it’ s worth trying! UCHIKO UCHIKO Odamiyama Gorge 3-G 小田深山渓谷 Enjoy the colors of the gorge from season to season Odamiyama Gorge is a great place to get close to untouched nature. The clear river and fresh green of the trees remains as it was from old times. A footpath stretches along the gorge for about 1.5 km, which takes about an hour to walk. There are many points of interest such as Akisadabuchi and Goshikigawara, and the streams and seasonal 11 changing colors are refreshing. There are also perfect spots for photos including the woods and river near the log bridge and submersible bridge. 12 Odamiyama Gorge is located more than 1,000 m above sea level, and you can see many alpine plants, birds and insects. 3-F Izumidani Tanada Rice Terrace UCHIKO 泉谷棚田 The beautiful scenery of “the 100 Best Terraced Rice Fields” The terraced rice fields were built over many years on the steep slopes of Izumidani. The four-story, four-level castle tower was recreated faithfully in wood based on the extensive documents kept from the Edo period. Castle towers recreated entirely in wood in the modern period are rare in Japan, making Ozu castle an Important Cultural Property. It’ s an appropriate symbol of Ozu. 15 Mt. Tomisu Park 冨士山公園 This park on Mt. Tomisu offers an unbroken view of the Ozu basin Inside, the castle has a pleasant aroma of cypress The wood was all sourced in Japan. The internal structure features open stairwells. Information panels and dioramas showing the original castle being built give a sense of the history of Ozu. The park is on top of a hill that looks a bit like Mount Fuji. With an observation platform and children’ s play area, the park is ideal for families. In spring, you can stroll around among a variety of flowers including cherry blossoms and azaleas. The view of the top of Mt. Tomisu colored pink is one of the seasonal scenes of Ozu, which known as the little Kyoto of Iyo. As you walk the stone paved streets, you can experience the elegance of a little version of Kyoto. 18 Elegant koi carp swim in water from the Hijikawa River Kyoto has its canals of Lake Biwa water, but in Ozu, the little Kyoto of Iyo, beautifully colored koi swim lazily in conduits fed by the abundant water of the Hijikawa. OZU OZU 3-E OZU OZU 3-E Ozu Cormorant Fishing 大洲のうかい An unusual summer attraction Ozu is one of three places in Japan where cormorant fishing is still practiced. Covered passenger boats accompany the cormorant fishing boats, and you can watch the birds catch sweetfish up-close as you enjoy a meal and sake. You can also take a guided walk of Ozu including a trip on a river boat. On Sundays in season, there’ s also daytime cormorant fishing, making it easy to enjoy this traditional attraction. As you take in the 19 views of Garyu Sanso and Ozu Castle amid the natural splendour of the scenery, and the amazing skill of the cormorant fishers, time seems to stand still. This is a summer experience only found in the river town of Ozu. 20 Cormorant fishing is an unchanging method of fishing using bonfires to attract sweetfish to the surface. This covered, arched bridge is the oldest in the region 2-D Nagahama-ohashi Bridge 長浜大橋 Japan’ s oldest lifting road bridge OZU It was completed in 1935 as a prefectural road bridge, and it’ s the oldest working lifting bridge in Japan. You can still see the holes and dents left by strafing during WWII. It’ s known as the Red Bridge and it’ s designated an Important National Cultural Property. When it’ s lit up, the lights show off the vermilion colour beautifully. Nagahama High School 378 Nagahama-ohashi Bridge 43 Nagahama Junior High School Seiyo 2-D Shirataki Park 白滝公園 A park associated with the legend of Rurihime This park is the focus of the legend of Rurihime, the wife of the lord of the castle in the Sengoku period, who jumped to her death over a waterfall. There are seven waterfalls here, and Medaki which falls vertically for 60 m is particularly beautiful. A monument to lyricist Ujo Noguchi is inscribed with his verse celebrating the beauty of the waterfall and autumn leaves. 23 Shirataki Elementary School Shirataki Park JR Iyo-Shirataki 5-D SEIYO 開明学校 25 卯之町の町並み Nakano Cho where Japan’ s early doctors walked Experience a Meiji period class in the old-fashioned Kaimei School Kaimei School, built in 1882 in the Meiji period, is a quasi-western-style modern school. Today it’ s a museum of education with Meiji-era textbooks. It’ s an Important National Cultural Property. It has many of the wall charts that were used in place of textbooks in those days, and you can experience a class using them. Unomachi Old Street Meiji and Taisho period classrooms Here you can experience a Meiji-style lesson. Even if you don’ t like studying, you can enjoy reading and writing, arithmetic, morals, singing and so on.(Charges apply, reservation required.) Streets of merchants from the mid Edo to early Showa period. The streets of old buildings display many traditional architectural features. In the feudal period, Unomachi flourished as a post town of the Uwajima domain. The disciples of the German doctor Siebold, Ninomiya Keisaku and Kusumoto Ine lived here, and it was the scene of a historical novel. You can try your hand at batik and vegetable dyeing, weaving and so on. Admission and charges apply. This little art gallery in the forest is famous for its exhibition of paintings from around Japan on fish-paste boards. It’ s the first local government art gallery in Nanyo, and you can enjoy exhibits by Japanese and Western painters Yokoyama Taikan and Marie Laurencin, and woodblock artists like Azechi Umetaro. 27 28 SEIYO SEIYO Suzaki Coast 5-C 須崎海岸 Beautiful strata in vertical stripes from about four hundred million years ago Large striped rocks along the coast called‘tuf f ’were formed when volcanic ash hardened. In the limestone gravel parts, the fossils of primitive coral from four hundred million years ago have been found. These strata are part of the Kurosegawa Tectonic Zone, and what were once horizontal layers have been thrust up by crustal movement to their current vertical position. A 300 m trail allows 29 you to see them up-close to appreciate their full impact. You can also take a boat out on a Geocruise to enjoy them. They were registered among“Japan’ s 100 Best Rock Formations”in 2014. 30 The Kurosegawa Tectonic Zone is a very old stratum from the Silurian to the Devonian period of the Paleozoic era. It’ s named after Kurosegawa in the old Shirokawa Cho in Seiyo where research was first conducted. Genjigadaba Plateau 3-G 桂川渓谷 A place of clear streams enveloped in greenery In the past, this was in the sea Genjigadaba Plateau is at the western end of the Shikoku Karst, Japan’ s only high-altitude, highland karst. From its highest point at 1,402 m above sea level, you get an unbroken view of the Shikoku Mountains. It comes from a legend in which the remnants of the Heike who lost the Genpei War mistook the white limestone for the white horses of the Genji and fled. Goishigamori 383 Jiyoshi Pass Genjigadaba Plateau 383 The origins of the name Genjigadaba 440 304 Chofukuji Temple 31 A beautiful gorge of deep green and clear streams. There are many cliffs, waterfalls and strangely shaped rocks here. A sad legend has it that the noblewoman Otogozen threw herself into the gorge. A mysterious gorge formed of chert The gorge is formed of a sedimentary rock called chert. The steep cliffs that form the valley are 60 m high, and the valley is only 3 m wide at its narrowest. The old streets of Honai take on a fantastic air with the atmospheric lighting. A place associated with the remnants of the Heike clan who lost the battle of D a n n o u r a . T o d a y t h e r e ’s playground equipment and a grassy area here. In 2012 it was designated an Important National Cultural Property. At the time an employee of Yawatahama City, Matsumura designed a terrace over the river and gently sloping outside stairs for the sake of the children, and classrooms clustered so as to let in light from both sides. The building has a variety of other 37 innovations. You can tour the school during holidays, and it’s an adventure to search for those special considerations the architect made for the children. 38 Despite calls to rebuild it due to obsolescence and the risk of earthquakes, the local people wanted to keep the school and so it’ s been reinforced and restored. Yawatahama City Gallery & Local Museum 4-D YAWATAHAMA YAWATAHAMA 八幡浜市民ギャラリー・郷土資料室 Learn about the history of Yawatahama and Ninomiya Chuhachi Ninomiya Chuhachi is said to have discovered the principles of aeroplanes before the Wright brothers. There are many exhibits including his bird and insect-shaped aeroplanes, and a reconstruction of a room in the house where he spent his later years. Besides exhibits relating to Ninomiya, there are archaeological items and rotating exhibitions 39 of paintings held by the museum. It’ s located on the easily-accessible second floor of the city library in the middle of Yawatahama. The 3rd floor is a public art gallery. 40 Ninomiya was so overcome with grief at the death of pilots in air crashes, he established a Shinto shrine and became its priest. The lighthouse began operating in 1918 in the Taisho period. It will mark its 100th anniversary in 2017. 46 The trail to the lighthouse takes about 20 minutes and as you pass through the tunnel of trees, there are places where you can see both coastlines. IKATA IKATA A white lighthouse at the tip of Sadamisaki Peninsula, Japan’s longest and narrowest. It was built to oversee navigation in the Hoyo Strait with its fast currents and many reefs. The sun setting over the Hoyo Strait at dusk is beautiful, presenting a different countenance from the daytime. The white tower of the lighthouse overlooking the azure strait is a popular tourist spot. The trail to the lighthouse is shaded by unique trees, and 4-C Kamegaike Onsen 亀ヶ池温泉 Refresh your mind and body with the clear salt air 47 week. Each turbine has three blades. The Sadamisaki Melody Line is the name of Route 197 along the Sadamisaki Peninsula, Japan’ s l on ge s t and narrowest. IKATA IKATA The Seto region located in the middle of the peninsula is one of Japan’ s windiest places, and 11 huge wind turbines have been erected here to generate electricity. There’ s a viewing space on the top of the hill offering a spectacular 360-degree view of the wind turbines, sea and peninsula. The team comprises eight paddlers, a helmsman, and a drummer. This traditional event going back about 300 years is celebrated at the Hachiman Shrine, tutelary shrine of the Ozu domain.
