Odamiyama Gorge is a great place to get close to
untouched nature. The clear river and fresh green
of the trees remains as it was from old times. A
footpath stretches along the gorge for about 1.5
km, which takes about an hour to walk. There
are many points of interest such as Akisadabuchi
and Goshikigawara, and the streams and seasonal

An unusual summer attraction
Ozu is one of three places in Japan where cormorant
fishing is still practiced. Covered passenger boats
accompany the cormorant fishing boats, and you can
watch the birds catch sweetfish up-close as you enjoy a
meal and sake. You can also take a guided walk of Ozu
including a trip on a river boat. On Sundays in season,
there’
s also daytime cormorant fishing, making it easy
to enjoy this traditional attraction. As you take in the

This park is the focus of the legend of
Rurihime, the wife of the lord of the castle
in the Sengoku period, who jumped to her
death over a waterfall. There are seven
waterfalls here, and Medaki which falls

A monument to lyricist Ujo Noguchi is
inscribed with his verse celebrating the

Beautiful strata in vertical stripes from
about four hundred million years ago
Large striped rocks along the coast called‘tuf f ’were
formed when volcanic ash hardened. In the limestone
gravel parts, the fossils of primitive coral from four hundred
million years ago have been found. These strata are part
of the Kurosegawa Tectonic Zone, and what were once
horizontal layers have been thrust up by crustal movement
to their current vertical position. A 300 m trail allows

A work of wooden modernism by architect Matsumura
Masatsune. In 2012 it was designated an Important
National Cultural Property. At the time an employee of
Yawatahama City, Matsumura designed a terrace over
the river and gently sloping outside stairs for the sake
of the children, and classrooms clustered so as to let in
light from both sides. The building has a variety of other

innovations. You can tour the
school during holidays, and
it’s an adventure to search for
those special considerations
the architect made for the
children.

Ninomiya Chuhachi is said to have discovered the
principles of aeroplanes before the Wright brothers.

years. Besides exhibits relating to Ninomiya, there
are archaeological items and rotating exhibitions

A white lighthouse at the tip of Sadamisaki Peninsula, Japan’s
longest and narrowest. It was built to oversee navigation in the
Hoyo Strait with its fast currents and many reefs. The sun
setting over the Hoyo Strait at dusk is beautiful, presenting a
different countenance from the daytime. The white tower of
the lighthouse overlooking the azure strait is a popular tourist
spot. The trail to the lighthouse is shaded by unique trees, and
