Cedar Hill Farm
This unique farm is open year-round for
agricultural field trips, paintball, petting

DeSoto County Confederate Monument
Mississippi’s second oldest Confederate
monument was erected in 1875, shortly
after the Civil War and is dedicated
to those who died for the Confederate
States. Hernando Memorial Cemetery has
the largest number of Confederate graves
in DeSoto County with 100 marked
graves and a mass grave for 60 soldiers.

DeSoto County Courthouse
The anchor of the square, the Courthouse
was built in 1942 after the previous French
Castle courthouse burned in 1940. Learn
the history of famed Spanish explorer
Hernando DeSoto, who explored this area
in 1541 and 1542, through the four
spectacular oil murals displayed in the
rotunda which depict DeSoto’s discovery of
the Mississippi River.

Gus Cannon Gravesite
Born in 1874, Gus Cannon was a banjo
player who “played the jug.” He wrote and
first recorded the song, “Walk Right In,”
which became a number one hit for the
Greenwich Village folk group, the Rooftop
Singers in 1963.

The academy offers riding lessons and

Mississippi Blues Trail Marker
Big Walter Horton, also known as Walter
“Shakey Horton” was born in Horn Lake,
moved to Memphis as a child and then
to Chicago where he first appeared on
the blues scene in the late 1950’s. A
quiet, unassuming and essentially shy
man, Horton is remembered as one of the
most influential harmonica players in blues
history. His career encompassed playing
blues joints in the Mississippi Delta
during the 1920’s and 30’s, to recording
with groups like Fleetwood Mac and
Johnny Winter in the 1970’s.

Honeymoon Cottage
Elvis and Priscilla spent their honeymoon
in this cottage when it was all a part of
the Circle G Ranch Elvis owned. The
home is not open for tours, but is a
popular site for visitors.

Lewis Ranch”. The home is a red brick

Joe Callicott
Mississippi Blues Trail Marker and Gravesite
Born in October 1899, Joe Callicott
spent his whole life in the area south of
Memphis. His chief musical associate
was Garfield Akers and it was as Akers’
second guitarist that he first recorded in
1929. He recorded some final sessions
for the blues documentarian George
Mitchell in the late 60’s.

Wesson House

ARKABUTLA LAKE
A sailor’s haven, a fisherman’s dream and
a draw for hunters, campers and hikers.
Just 20 minutes south of Memphis, this
40,000-acre lake was created by the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers on the Coldwater
River. Its prevailing westerly wind makes
Arkabutla one of the best sailing lakes in
the nation. It has eight boat ramps and
333 campsites. There are nature trails,
picnic areas, playgrounds and swimming
beaches. More than 30,000 acres of land
surrounding the lake are open to public
hunting for dove, squirrel, bobwhite quail,
rabbit, deer and turkey. Arkabutla is rated
one of the top five crappie fishing locations
in the U.S. Fish in the lake include
largemouth and white bass, black and white
crappie, and channel and flathead catfish.
Because of the lake’s turbidity and lack of
depth, all game fish tend to stay shallow.
