Spanish conquistador Hernando DeSoto
discovered DeSoto County in 1541. Today you
can discover all the history and legends of
DeSoto County yourself. Marvel at the larger
than life murals of the area’s early explorers
located inside the Hernando Courthouse. It’s
the same courthouse where author John
Grisham, a graduate of Southaven High School
in DeSoto County, practiced law while writing
the book A Time to Kill.
Follow history from the Civil War to the Civil
Rights Movement and beyond at the DeSoto
County Museum. While you are there, check out
the exhibit of the “Killer” Jerry Lee Lewis! See
the honeymoon cottage of Elvis and Priscilla

Baptist Industrial College Marker
Founded in 1900 by the North Mississippi Baptist
Educational Convention, the college was the first school in
DeSoto County to offer instruction through grade twelve to
African Americans and one of the earliest private schools
for African Americans in north Mississippi. The school
closed in 1960. The original dormitory remains.

“Beale Town Bound” Mississippi Blues Trail Marker
Honors musicians Gus Cannon, Robert Wilkins and Jim
Jackson. Gus Cannon was born in Red Banks, MS and
buried in Hernando. Gus was a banjo player who also
played “the jug.” He wrote and first recorded the song,
“Walk Right In,” which became a number one hit in 1963
for the Greenwich Village folk group, the Rooftop Singers.
Blues artists Robert Wilkins and Jim Jackson were
Hernando natives. Open year round.

Cedar Hill Farm
This unique farm is open year-round for agricultural field
trips, paintball, petting zoo, pony rides, beautiful picnic

DeSoto Arts Council Gallery & Gardens
The DeSoto Arts Council serves as the countywide home for
the arts with space for exhibitions, classes, meeting and special

DeSoto County Confederate Monument
Mississippi’s second oldest Confederate monument was
erected in 1875 after the Civil War and is dedicated to those
who died for the Confederate States. Hernando Memorial
Cemetery has the largest number of Confederate graves in
DeSoto County with 100 marked graves and a mass grave
for 60 soldiers. Open year round from dawn to dusk.

DeSoto County Courthouse
The anchor of the square, the Courthouse was built in 1942
after the previous French Castle courthouse burned in 1940.
Learn the history of famed Spanish explorer Hernando
DeSoto, who explored this area in 1541 and 1542, through the
four spectacular oil murals displayed in the Rotunda that
depict DeSoto’s discovery of the Mississippi River.

DeSoto County Museum
Explore the history of DeSoto County from the early
Native Americans who once lived in the area through
Civil War battles that affected this great county. The
museum provides education programs, as well as modern
day information on all the cities in DeSoto County, including
celebrities from the area such as John Grisham and Jerry Lee

Gus Cannon Gravesite
Born in 1874, Gus Cannon was an American blues musician
who played the banjo and played “the jug” and who helped
to popularize jug bands (such as his own Cannon’s Jug
Stompers) in the 1920s and 1930s. He wrote and first
recorded the song, “Walk Right In,” which became a
number one hit for the Greenwich Village folk group, the

The academy offers riding lessons and dressage instruction.

Springhill Historic Memorial Garden Cemetery
DeSoto County’s oldest cemetery, established in 1836. By
the time of the last major yellow fever outbreak in 1878,
there were hundreds of graves; many or most unmarked
today. Only six monuments date after 1900. A historical
reenactment of people buried in the cemetery takes place
each Fall. Open year round.

American Contract Bridge League Museum
Located inside the American Contract Bridge League’s
headquarters, this state-of-the-art, interactive museum is
home to the world’s largest collection of bridge memorabilia,
trophies, videos and other artifacts related to the game of
bridge. The museum also contains the ACBL Hall of Fame,
as well as the Albert H. Morehead Memorial Library. A
must see for all bridge playing enthusiasts. Free admission.

Big Walter Horton Mississippi Blues Trail Marker
Big Walter Horton, also known as Walter “Shakey Horton”
was born in Horn Lake, moved to Memphis as a child and then on to Chicago where he first appeared on the blues
scene in the late 1950’s. A quiet, unassuming and essentially
shy man, Horton is remembered as one of the most
influential harmonica players in the history of blues. His
career encompassed playing blues joints in the Mississippi
Delta during the 1920’s and 30’s, to studio recording with
groups like Fleetwood Mac and Johnny Winter in the
1970’s. He was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in
1982. Open year round.

The 120-acre park features a nature walking trail, four

The “Killer’s” home is referred to as The Lewis Ranch.
The home is a red brick ranch house surrounded by a large
brick and board wall. Even though it is not open for tours,

Joe Callicott Mississippi Blues Trail Marker
and Gravesite
Born in October 1899, Joe Callicott, was a Nesbit native
who spent his whole life in the area south of Memphis and
is regarded as one of Mississippi’s finest early bluesmen.
His chief musical associate was Garfield Akers and it was
as Akers’ second guitarist that he first recorded in 1929. He
recorded some final sessions for the blues documentarian
George Mitchell in the late 60’s and served as mentor to
Nesbit guitarist Kenny Brown. Open year round.

Blocker Cemetery
Milton Blocker was among the first settlers to move into
the Indian lands that became DeSoto County. He settled
in the eastern part of the county and the community that
was formed became known as Olive Branch. Milton and his
brother-in-law, Stephen Flinn purchased two sections of
land from an Indian in 1836. Milton Blocker donated land
for Blocker Cemetery, established in 1847.

Wesson House
The Wesson House, built in 1875 by Olive Branch’s first
Mayor Ben Wesson, is located on the southwest corner
of the Pigeon Roost & Goodman Road intersection. It is

Christmas Open House open to the public.

Edmondson Cemetery
Just west of I-55, Edmondson Cemetery was founded in
1844, rests on a tree shaded hilltop. Graves include those
of early settlers in this area, including Indian traders,

Memphis Minnie, born Lizzie “Kid” Douglas in 1897, is
considered by many to be the best female blues singer of all
time. She received her first guitar in 1905 as a Christmas

inducted to the Hall of Fame in the inaugural W.C. Handy

Arkabutla Lake’s remote location is just seven miles from
Hernando, MS. Whether it is hunting, fishing, exploring
nature trails, boating, biking or just enjoying the outdoors,
Arkabutla Lake provides a variety of opportunities for all
outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy. Many amenities are ADA
accessible. At Arkabutla Lake, you will find some of the best
fishing in the southeast and some of the best sailing east of
the Mississippi River. The lake is home to several species of
native fish to Mississippi waters, such as largemouth bass,
bream, catfish and is renowned for producing huge crappie.

sites and one-day use shelter, all with electric hookups.
Amenities like flush toilets, showers and drinking water
provide a comfortable camping experience for guests.

South Abutment Recreation Area
The South Abutment Recreation Area is sits along
Arkabutla Lake and Dam in the hills of northwest
Mississippi. The campground is located just south of
the Arkabutla Dam. This campground offers 80 Class A
campsites in a predominantly pine-forested area and a
trailer dump station. The nearby day use area includes
one picnic shelter, numerous picnic tables, playground
and designated swimming beach. Visitors enjoy outdoor
recreational activities such as camping, fishing, boating,
swimming, biking and spending a relaxing day taking in all
that nature has to offer.

DeSoto County Visitor’s Center Trail
Take advantage of nature and the beauty of DeSoto
County Visitor’s Center Greenways Trail. The 1/4 mile
handicapped accessible interpretive trail circles the storm
water retention-pond and features native landscaping and
interpretive signage. The pet friendly trail offers visitors
and residents a place to walk, stretch, picnic or enjoy a
peaceful rest. Open year round.

ARK Walking Trail
The ARK Nature Trail is located 10 miles west of Hernando
on Highway 304 just west of Fogg Road. Look for signs and
parking areas on the left just past Panther Creek. Open year

from Highway 309 westward to Highway 51 at Arkabutla

Delta Bluffs Scenic Byway
DeSoto County has the most scenic byways in the state of
Mississippi. Follow the road less traveled for a relaxing
tour of our historic Delta Bluffs Scenic Byway. You can
begin at Exit 280 on I-55 and follow Commerce Street in
Hernando, to the DeSoto County Museum. From there,
follow Highway 304 west as the Delta Bluffs Scenic Byway
takes you on a history-filled adventure through a myriad
of unique geographical areas from the delta, the bluffs and

Johnson Creek Greenway begins along Highway 61 and
runs easterly along the creek toward the city of Horn
Lake. The western section of the trail from Baldwin Rd to
Highway 61 is open for walking along the Utility Roadbed.

The Mississippi Great River Road, a National Scenic
Byway, is a historic journey along the Great River Road
through Mississippi’s history. Often referred to as “Blues
Alley,” Highway 61 takes you south from Memphis into the

This is a top five rated 18-hole, par 72 course in Mississippi,
