Sacramento City College Extended Opportunity Programs and Services EOPS 2014 11:30 Check in 11:30-12:20 Lunch 12:20-12:40 Introductions and Welcome Christine Hernandez, Dean F.A.S.S. Michael Poindexter, Vice President, Student Services 12:45-1:25 Recognition and Awards 1:25-1:30 Fireworks-Katy Perry Traditional sing-a-long 1 “Firework – a combustible or explosive device for producing a string display of light or a loud noise, used for signaling or part of a celebration”. A song typically serves as the theme for our EOPS End of the Year Celebration. This year our students selected the song “Firework” by Katy Perry. “Firework” I said, what’s that about? I hadn’t heard the song because well…. I am more of an “old school funk” kind of gal. So to make sure the song was appropriate, I asked the students to play the song. They also printed the lyrics so I could read along. It quickly became apparent as to why they selected this song for our celebration theme. The lyrics tell a story of a person that feels he/she is floating, aimlessly and unconfidently not having a direction. The song challenges the person to take the chance and ignite the light inside of them and OPEN the doors they feel are closed… WOW…I think we all have been there at one time or another. Many of you are reaching an important pinnacle in your educational journey that brings you to this celebration of your excellence. Some of you may have thought being here today at this place, at this time, was a far reaching possibility or better said maybe impossibility. But your determination and courage let you dream, shoot across the sky and ignite that “firework” inside you…and we are glad and very proud you did! Because you see…what we can do in EOPS is limited unless YOU decide to make your dream a reality. You MUST believe in yourself, do the hard work and bust down the doors of insecurity and doubt. I once read a quote “don’t look at your life through a rear view mirror”… and this is so true for many of us. When you are first generation college student, English language learner, starting at the beginning with skill building classes, undocumented, or economically unable to go directly to the four year university after high school but you had the grades to go, it is so easy to get caught up in feeling like your past determines your future. But as we know that is not the case! Take in this moment, own your place, and feel a sense of pride. YOU DESERVE IT! 2 Some of you will not be returning to EOPS next semester because you will be moving on but know you have left us all in “awe” of your accomplishments. You walk through one door on to the next on your journey be it the workforce or a four year university. But you are not the same person as when you started Sacramento City College. Today and always you will shine brighter and more confident of your light. So although you may not be here physically you will always be “FAMILIA”. EOPS will connect us. It is a distinction that separates you from other community college students. We hope that it was during those times in which you felt you did not belong, college was not for you, you were “wasted space”, that EOPS made a difference. The staff and faculty of EOPS hope that we played a small role in keeping you in college, supporting you through, and encouraging you on. Before ending I would like to thank our/your wonderful EOPS Student Assistants – Andrea, Ariel, Calvin, Carlesha, Mee, and Sammy – they organized this entire event. They worked hard to make this occasion special for you and your family. On behalf of the proud staff and faculty of EOPS welcome and thank you for honoring us with your presence at this year’s celebration. Si Se Puede! Un gran abrazo del corazón/Yes it can be done! A big hug from the heart, Irma Rodriguez, EOPS/CARE Coordinator EOPS Alum -San Joaquin Delta College (I won’t tell you the years!) ;) 3 Fall 2013 Cumulative Highest Honors Students 4.0—3.5 GPA Acuna Pryor, Naomi G Aguilar, Bianca S Al Miqbil, Nasma Alekseyeva, Marina Ayin, John Barnard, Alison E Batkhuyag, Batmanduul Belaia, Valentina Bokhari, Sharmeen Braafladt, Jessica G Caler, Brian C Chernozubova, Lyubov Clarke, Steven B Cota, Erika K Dang, Truc T Daniel, Jessica M Danielyan, Daniel Danielyan, Mariam De Marco, Anthony W Duong, Thanh T Ebrat, Ariz Siraj Enos, Desiree E Euwing, Tasauna A. Without them there would be no need for the institution. Not a cold enrollment statistic but a flesh and blood human being with feelings and emotions like our own. Not someone to be tolerated so that we can do our thing. They are our thing. Not dependent on us. Rather we are dependent on them. Not an interruption of our work, but the purpose of it. We are not doing them a favor by serving them. They are doing us a favor by giving us the opportunity to do so. Rod Tarrer 14 "Firework" Katy Perry Do you ever feel like a plastic bag Drifting through the wind, wanting to start again? Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin Like a house of cards, one blow from caving in? And when it's time you'll know Do you ever feel already buried deep six feet under? Screams but no one seems to hear a thing Do you know that there's still a chance for you 'Cause there's a spark in you? 'Cause, baby, you're a firework Come on, show 'em what you're worth Make 'em go, "Aah, aah, aah" As you shoot across the sky-y-y You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine Just own the night like the 4th of July 'Cause, baby, you're a firework Come on, show 'em what you're worth Make 'em go, "Aah, aah, aah" As you shoot across the sky-y-y Baby, you're a firework Come on, let your colours burst Make 'em go, "Aah, aah, aah" You're gonna leave 'em all in awe, awe, awe You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine Just own the night like the 4th of July Baby, you're a firework Come on, let your colours burst Make 'em go, "Aah, aah, aah" You're gonna leave 'em all in awe, awe, awe Boom, boom, boom Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon It's always been inside of you, you, you And now it's time to let it throughough-ough 'Cause, baby, you're a firework Come on, show 'em what you're worth Make 'em go, "Aah, aah, aah" As you shoot across the sky-y-y You don't have to feel like a wasted space You're original, cannot be replaced If you only knew what the future holds After a hurricane comes a rainbow Baby, you're a firework Come on, let your colours burst Make 'em go, "Aah, aah, aah" You're gonna leave 'em all in awe, awe, awe Maybe a reason why all the doors are closed So you could open one that leads you to the perfect road Like a lightning bolt, your heart will glow Boom, boom, Even brighter moon, moon Boom, boom, Even brighter moon, moon boom than the moon, boom than the moon, 15 Maybe the reason why all the doors are closed so you can open one that leads you to the perfect road. Remember that you choose the path that you want to be on. 16 EOPS Faculty and Staff Christine Hernandez, Dean Irma Rodriguez, Coordinator Delissa Garza, Supervisor Sandra Ruedas, Counselor Adam Freas, Counselor Ken Times, Counselor Kathleen Dorn, Outreach SPA Nancy Arashiro, Counseling Clerk II Jennifer Chu, Grant Coordination Clerk Carol Poncini, FA Officer Student Assistants Ariel Arias-Bautista, Student Andrea Weathington, Student Carlesha Maddox, Student Calvin Hy, Student Mee Xiong, Student Sammy Sanchez, Student Tasuana Euwing, Student
