5 Steps to Start Eliminating
Credit Card Debt
If you’re facing credit card debt, you’re not alone. In fact, credit card debt is among the top
three sources of household debt, trailing only mortgages and student loans.
We at C.A.H.P. Credit Union want to help our members live debt-free. Here are five steps
to break the “plastic shackles” and get on the road to financial wellness.
Brad Houle, CCE
President
C.A.H.P. Credit Union
1. Stop Using Credit Cards
It sounds obvious, but it’s a critical first step. With credit cards, it’s easy to spend beyond
your means, which can be the top of a slippery slope.
2. Create a Realistic Budget
Evaluate your finances and create a detailed budget of projected income versus monthly
expenditures. Writing it out will help you realize how much you’re spending on things you
might not actually “need.”
3. Go Beyond the Minimum Payment
Simply paying the monthly minimum won’t substantially chip away at debt. Use your
budget to begin making larger payments over time.
4. Decide Which Cards to Pay Off First
Consult a financial advisor – CAHPCU or other – to decide which cards to pay off first.
Opinions may vary based on your specific debt situation.
5. Consider CAHPCU Debt Consolidation
Our debt-restructure counselors can help you turn your debt into savings. We make it easy,
and are here to support you every step of the way.
