School
In Romania there are: kindergartens,
schools with 1-8 grade, high schools
with 9-12 grade , national colleges
with 1-12 grade.
In Romania students generally start school
at 8 and finish at 14.
Our friend’s school is very big, it has 3
buildings A, B and C, and has 3 floors.
Summer holiday lasts three months, from
15 June to 15 September. Winter
holiday lasts from 22 December to 6
January.
They have lessons of 50 minutes. Breaks
are 10 minutes and a big break for 20
minutes.
Their high school has around 600 pupils
and their classes have around 20
pupils.
They have 10-11 subjects.
Food
Food
Romanians do not have special dishes for
breakfast, lunch or dinner other than
the stuff all European countries eat.
Normally, breakfast is at 8-9 am, lunch at
13, and dinner is at 19 .
Generally, Romanians like pizza and
pasta, too.
National Romanian Drinks:
- Tuica: a type of brandy made of plums,
- Palinca: a very strong brandy,
- wines: Feteasca and Grasa de Cotnari;
Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay from
Murfatlar vineyards,
- local beers: Ursus, Silva, Ciuc.
Food
Romanian national dishes:
- Mamaliga = Polenta
is a staple side dish in Romania that often
replaces bread or other grains and
starches. Classic Romanian polenta is
served with warm milk or sour cream,
and often benefits from shredded feta
or other cheese on top. It is made from
corn flour.
- Sarmale or stuffed cabbage are enjoyed
year-round in Romania, but especially
for holidays like Christmas and Easter.
This Romanian stuffed cabbage recipe
is made with pork, cabbage and
tomatoes.

What do people celebrate?
Romania celebrates its national day, also
called 1918 Union Day, with military parades
and public speeches given by national
leaders in cities such as Bucharest and in
Alba Iulia (the “union city”). Many people in
Romania have the day off work and school.
Public life
National Day is a public holiday in Romania
so banks, public offices, and many private
businesses are closed. People intending to
travel via public transport during public
holidays must check with the public transit
authorities on any changes to time
schedules. Some parts of Bucharest, and
possibly other major cities, may be closed off
during certain times of the day for military
parades.

Background
Roman’s National Day marks the country’s
unification in 1918 and the formation of the
Romanian state within its present-day boundaries.
Romania’s full independence had been recognized
in 1878 but it was not until December 1, 1918 in the
city of Alba Iulia, when Romania – made of
Moldova and Wallachia at the time – was united
with Transylvania, Crisana, Banat and the
Maramures area. National Day has been celebrated
in Romania since 1990, after the fall of the
Romanian Communist Party.
Symbols
The Romanian flag is flown on National Day in
Romania. The national flag is a tricolor blue,
yellow, red, with colors arranged in vertical bands
of equal size. It has a width-length ratio of 2:3. The
3 colors symbolize 3 Romanian provinces –
Wallachia (yellow), Moldavia (red), and
Transylvania (blue). The national anthem
‘DeşteaptăDeşteaptă-te, române!’
române!’ (Awaken thee,
Romanian!) is also performed. The anthem is a
symbol of unity, courage, and patriotism among
Romanians.
Thanks a lot for your work!
