This Fanzine was created by members of the 2016 Anime & Manga
Translation & Betrayals CFG held in FAU, University of Chile.
First & foremost, we would like to thank FRANCISCA FUENTES,
Head of Cross-Curricular Teaching unit, for her help & support, especially in providing the funding for this project. Thanks also to Eduardo Tirado, one of the administrators of the Organización Manga
Anime Estudiantil (OMAE) from Campus JGM for the wonderful
class he gave with Miguel and for his interest in participating in this
project. Hopeful he will contribute to the next edition.
“Let’s do a fanzine” said the teachers
“What’s a fanzine?” answered the students
“A cheap, home-made magazine made by fans” Said the teachers,
“Don’t you remember Punk Rock?”
“Profe, none of us were born until 1995! Punk Rock was 20 years
before our time!” answered the students.
Despite not knowing about fanzines or punk, the seed of “Utaku
Fanzine” were sown and this, Edition N°1, is the first fruit.

Everybody had the opportunity to participate and although not everybody who expressed interest managed to contribute to this edition, hopefully they’ll get their chance in future editions.
ANIME 101: HOW TO MAKE A
SUCCESSFUL ANIME [Critical
Parody]
Written by: The sleepless Tanuki.
So you wanna be rich? You want to write a series so successful that everybody will be talking about it? Then you
came to the right place, kid. I will tell you the basics that
you need to know to make your own anime.
I) First Things First: Source
You need a source. No, you don’t have time to write you
own stories, that would require hiring a writer, and if you
want to do that, you gotta have someone with a wellknown name. So let’s skip that, nobody has the time, nobody has the money. What are your options then? Well,
you have two ways to do a successful anime without
wasting your time. Remember, you want to make money,
you want to gets views and sell merchandising (action
figures and loooong pillows, you know?). So let’s split
your possibilities in two:You can go with a 4 panel manga
about “cute girls doing cute things” or a Light novel.
II) Okay, I have a source. What do I do know?
Well, in case you choose a yonkoma manga with cute
girls doing cute things, you got it easy. Just be sure you
have all kind of girls:The energetic one, the mature-motherly one, the serious one, and the “tsundere”. 4 panels,
4 girls. Easy job! Just give them one hobby in common
(Games, music, bread, other girls, etc), throw them in a
high school with really cute uniforms and… Profit!
But if you wanna go with a Light Novel, you gotta know
what you are doing. “But, What novel do I choose?”
Don’t worry, child. I’m gonna guide you in this journey.
1.- The main character: “Light Novel guy”
Don’t forget: You goal is to make money, not a masterpiece. You have to play safe: Don’t try something new,
that’s too risky. Choose a main character with this attributes:
- HE has to be a young male with a simple face. This
way, your audience, which consists mostly of teenagers
between 11 and 15 years old, can see themselves in the
hero. Brown or black hair with brown or black eyes will
do the trick. And you can go cheap in the color department. Two birds with one stone! Also, give him a common name; don’t use English or German ones. Something easy to remember like “Kiritu” will do.
- HE is not a character by himself: He is all the dreams
and desires of your audience. So choose one who is
extremely overpowered, If you go for a Sci-fi setting,
(extra points if he is overpowered from the beginning
and without any explanation), but he is also the kindest,
coolest, most badass guy around, who would rather be
doing anything else but training or trying too hard to be
the very best like no one ever was. And give him a special sword, because he is badass and badass people uses
swords. A katana will be fine.
Because of that overpowering personality; he is also really popular with girls. BUT remember, “Kiritu” needs
a main girlfriend; we’ll talk about her later. Every other
girl in the show with the ability to speak has to fall in
love with him for apparently no reason at all- wait- No,
no. They fall in love with him because he is the coolest,
kindest, most badass guy around there, don’t forget. The
girls will constantly remember that fact (because it is a
fact, not an opinion) to each other. Don’t forget: If she
has lines in the script, and is a girl, then she should be in
love with Kiritu. Because they are girls. And they speak.
Why else would you put them in the story for? So, basically give the main guy his own harem and fill it with
waifus.Yes, even his little sister (Or cousin if you want to
be politically right).
2.- The girlfriend of the main character: “Light
novel Girl”
I’ve already written that every girl in the story is usually
in love with the main character. But this girl is special,
she is “The one”, the “canon” pairing, the OTP of the
fandom. But because this kind of show is targeted to
young male audiences, you don’t apply the same rules
you used in the guy, to the main girl. She is made to be
the waifu of thirteen years old, not a role-model for girls.
Point number one: She is a “Tsundere” first, THEN she
is a girl. If you watch enough anime you should already
know what does that means, but in case you don’t, it can
be simply explained as the girl starts disliking the guy or
even hating him, then she realizes that he is in fact, a nice
guy, leading to a “I don’t know when did I fell in love with
you” – situation. In this personality archetype the girl
usually has a stubborn attitude filled with an inexplicable
pride.
About the other sides of her personality, she has to be
the best fighter around, or the best student (Except for
the main character, because he is the very best like no
one ever was, and the alpha male too), so she can totally
handle any dangerous situation by herself, but “Kiritu”
will save her anyway because she is the love of his life
(Doesn’t matter if it is just episode 2). Following the
rules of this perfect relationship, she loves the main guy
with all her heart and doesn’t mind giving even her life
to save him. Also, don’t forget to give her a girly hobby
besides her “tomboy” or “hime” attitude (cooking, sewing, dancing).
Ok, let’s go crazy but not so crazy with her looks: She
has the cutest uniform (It doesn’t have to be comfy or
realistic) and is the best looking girl around, long hair
all the way down to her low back, and a beautiful smile
(Kiritu is the one that says this, in reality that smile is just
to curve lines but never mind it’s cute). About her fighting techniques, if all the setting revolves around swords,
the give her one. If it doesn’t then go for fire or water
powers. Healing will be alright too.
3.- Obligatory Side characters:
Well, you can make a story with just two or three characters, but that will require them to develop theirs personalities way too much for your budget. You want to
sell a simple idea, because your audience does not like
changes. Some ideas for the filler character are the following:
- The guy that knows everything and explains it to Kiritu
(aka the audience) or the dumb guy that listens to Kiritu
while HE is the one that explains everything.
- The Mentor figure: His father, mother, older sister/
brother, a senpai that guides him in his quest for… wait,
Did this guy have a quest in the first place? Oh. Nevermind, just kill this character and now you have the plot:
Make the guy search for this Mentor figure. Because you
need to put plot in between the fanservice.
- Options for the girls of the harem: Little sister/cousin,
kouhai, senpai, dumb/shy girl with glasses, infancy friend,
yandere, rival and Light novel girl rival.
Now go put these people in a Sci-fi high-school setting
with a tournament arc and done!
4.- Congrats! You have successfully settled the
base for your anime. Now go and sell some pillowcases.
And, let’s get serious. While I was writing this I thought
many times “What if someone takes this way too seriously and thinks that I despise all kind of anime?”
Then I thought: Well, no. It’s because I love this media
(and manga) that I’m being this critical with it. This is
supposed to be a sort of bingo game where you can
find all the similarities that modern day animes tend to
have, sometimes just besides the plagiarism line. And yes,
when people say “Anime characters all look and sound
the same” and I cannot say NO, but it won’t be an outright “Yes”. It is more likely a “sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t” based on the fact that the medium
is collapsed, with something to watch for any kind of
audience and almost all of the genres you can think of,
so you have to be absurdly specific with what you are
asking for, to actually not get it. You want a show with
a character which you are able to identify with? Easy,
just tell me how you describe yourself and I will find at
least one show that you’ll like or simply enjoy. For a very
young audience: Pokémon and Pretty Cure, 13y/olds will
prefer something like Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic and
K-on! Teenagers will be fine with Death Note, Toradora
and Shimoneta, Young adults will enjoy Psycho-Pass and
Nana, and then I would recommend Monster and Studio
Ghibli Movies for older audiences. The point is: It is not
wrong to like or dislike something based on your personal taste, but before you compare two animes (or any
other product) you have to know what its purpose is,
what is the audience they are looking for.
But, even having that in consideration, there is still a reason why you should be more selective with what you
watch and what you support:The quality of future series.
Maybe you don’t know, but the anime industry is in crisis.
It has problems to adapt to the new consumer (because
everything can be found online, legal or not) and it has
problems selling its products. To actually get profit from
a series a studio has mostly three options; the first one
is selling merchandise, the second one is making derived
products such as games or art books, and the third one
is selling the bluerays in physical format. The problem
is that the only reliable option at the moment is the
merchandise, because there will always exist this part of
the consumers that will loyally buy anything related to
the series. The problem here is that sometimes people
forget that the anime industry is in fact, that: An industry,
a market. They have to create products that will generate profit to keep the studio going. So, when any series
starts generating high incomes, they’ll keep doing that
kind of series. This is when studios like A1 pictures come
to the table. Let’s say that this studio is like the McDonalds of the anime industry: They make a lot of series
every year and have set a standard for what an anime
looks like, with generic stories and almost the same face
to all the characters, just by releasing a large amount
of animes that look and sound the same, because people seem to enjoy that kind of show, besides the overall
quality of the series, is “just enough with cute girls and
swords”. So, if making these kind of shows, with no originality is so cheap and convenient, Why would the other
studios spend money on making great shows that will
not sell as much as the cheap ones? And, that’s the point:
If you keep supporting cheap series, sooner or later the
good ones will stop being released, because a simple
light novel adaptation is easier to make than an original
work, and its guaranteed that at least the readers of the
original source will watch the anime and buy the merchandise. Because of that, studios like A1 pictures will
keep going, and the anime industry will keep the poor
working conditions that their animators suffer. In 2010,
one of the employers of A1 pictures committed suicide
because of overwork. He worked approximately 600
hours a month, according to the hospital record, and
was suffering a severe depression. Last year, Manglobe
studio (samurai champloo, gangsta) went bankrupt with
a debt of 350 million yens. Even Studio Ghibli (Spirited
away, Howl’s moving castle) which is an oscar winner, is
in risk of closing because Hayao Miyazaki is retiring from
the media and they don’t know if they can keep selling
their stuff without his name.
So, what’s next? What can you do to stop this situation?
Well, sadly, not much, but if everyone contributes just a
little, that little help will keep growing and all the support will eventually get to the Japanese studios.

Although their target are the “gamers”, it isn’t necessary to be one of them to go
and have a good time with friends while enjoying a delicious food, drinks and some
entertaining games.
Inaugurated in December 2013 this new concept of resto-bar has had a warm
reception from the public, and now they have two establishment: the first in
Ñuñoa and the second one in Providencia. Everything in this place has references
to some game, from the facade, the decoration, the design of the menu, the food,
the drinks, even the serviette holders, EVERYTHING!
As soon as you enter a waiter or a waitress giveS you the welcome and askS if
you have been there before in order to explain the system to you and also ask
which console you would like to use, they have from Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64 to Xbox One (only in Providencia) and Wii U, each one with its own space
and a list with the games. Besides they have arcades and flippers that you can use
if you have to wait for an empty console or your turn in a game with your friends.
In the menu you can find hamburgers like “Yoshi”, “Pikachu”, “Mario” among
others, burritos, “multiplayer” dishes, salad, thematic cocktails like “Mana potion”,
“Sub-zero”, “Ahri”, “Kirby” and more, also national and international beer, all type
of drinks, thematic shooters (“Charmander”, “Fatality”, “Fus Ro Dah”, etc), juice
and smoothies. The prices are the same that you can find in other resto-bars with
special offers sometimes, but they also organize tournaments of different games
and events.
Recently they have added a system of reserve because sometimes the clients have
to wait for a long time or arrive early to find an empty console, so it is extremely
recommended use it!

Meido
This maid café began working in anime events but is now
a unique establishment in Chile since April 9th. The place
has a good location and two floors with a very beautiful
decoration, also the atmosphere is so relaxing that makes
it perfect for a time after difficult tests.
It has a varied and delicious menu that includes traditional
Japanese food like omurice, ramen, yakisoba, gyozas among
others (not sushi), also sandwiches, cake, tea, coffee, alcoholic drinks (only on weekends), etc with the price that
you can find in any café, but with this special service from
the maids. Besides there are options for vegetarian or celiac people if you ask.
All you expect from a maid café is here, from the typical reception “Okaerinasaimase”, all services mentioned
above! with some variations in the “spell” (some maids
have their own version) and the game depends on whether the maid has time or not, until the “Itterasshaimase”,
additionally they have the frequent customer system!
(Sadly if there are some ladies interested in working in
Meido, they already have enough staff for now)
Espinoza
What a Maid Café is?
For the people that still don’t know, this is a type of café
very popular in Japan where you can relax and findA young
ladies dressed as a maid, they treat customers kindly and
sometimes very tenderly as masters or mistresses, this
interaction with the maids makes these cafés a unique and
special place. Also we can find different services oriented
towards the people that love anime, comics, videogames,
etc like thematic food with a maid’s cute drawing, a “spell”
for the food to be tasty, some games (also with a maid), a
maid’s show each few hours (commonly a dance and/or a
song) and special events!

VIRTUAL REALITY
Since the invention of the videogames, all, from gamers to developers have had one dream, this dream is to
develop a game as immersive as one could have, getting away from the reality and to recreate a world so close
to the reality that could fool the senses, thus was born the dream of a virtual reality.
One of the first approaches of this concept is in the 60’s with a machine called sensorium, a machine with a
video interactive, which also has smells and texture. This concept is in between virtual reality and the cinema
4D, but in many cases mentioned as the first virtual simulation apparatus.
In the 80’s this concept it was used in some of the arcades, developed by companies like Atari, who created
entire divisions dedicated to the study and creation of virtual devices, these would develop devices like the
data glove or battlezone.
The first devices developed by Atari use 3D models and vectors to try emulating virtual reality.
Finally in the 90’ emerges the best known and famous case of a virtual reality device, the virtual boy, created
by Nintendo, considered until the creation of oculus Rift as the closer device to the virtual reality, also it is
known as one of the greatest failures of Nintendo, selling almost nothing and with many negative reviews by
its little game library and the problems caused to users such as headaches, dizziness and vision problems, generated in most cases by the graphics who were with red and black colour and a very rough 3D.
After that the idea of virtual reality was abandoned for more than a decade, until the in 2010, a prototype is
created, it was called Oculus Rift, after that he created a Kickstarter in 2012, this Kickstarter collected a total
of 2,5 millions of dollars, demonstrating the public’s interest in these devices, in 2014 this invention was sold
to Facebook, thing that upset and worried many people.
But in the end it had a positive effect; many companies began to develop your own consoles, like Sony, Google,
Valve, Microsoft, etc.
Just have to hope that this is a new beginning for the video game industry that can generate new games and
new ways to play.
If you are interested to kwon a possible vision of what a world with virtual reality device, I recommend a
book called “Ready Player One“, it is a very good and entertaining vision of a world with virtual reality.
Anime & food
I love food, and i love eating it. And when it comes
to seeing anime characters eating their gorgeously
prepared meals, it certainly makes me jealous.
I cherish those moments when i was a child, when
there was some Chinese leftover food in the fridge.
I used to heat everything up and eat it in tandem
with Goku when he and his friends ate plate after
plate of perfectly lean meats, sautéed mushrooms
and bowls of rice.
This i must say, was the first time i really took interest in eastern food, of course i tried chinese food,
but the vibe that food gave me was different. The
food actually shown in these shows was more impressive, it seemed tastier, you could almost taste
the sour sweetness from the desserts, or smell the
spices from the stews, or the crispness of the panko.
One series that i remember the most because of
the food in it was Sakura Card Captor, the protagonist Sakura often prepared elaborate meals to
surprise his love interest, and i always wondered
if every child in Japan was able to produce such
plates.
It made me feel sort of untalented. But as the time
has passed and i aged, i can finally say that i can
cook properly, and i do it very well.

Pokémon Go!: The Global
Phenomenon and First
Impressions
Written by: ValeEspinoza
Lately we have seen a lot of news about el launch
of Pokemon Go: player’s strange anecdotes, the
change in the ambient of the streets and parks,
smartphone stolen, and the success for Nintendo.
But sadly in Chile, Latin America and others places too, we don’t have the official version available.
Anyway the APK (Android Application Package)
was filtered from another country and some people had the opportunity to play a little until the
servers crashed, people like me!
I don’t want to explain all the “how to play” because you can find it anywhere, so I’m going to talk
about the best and the worst aspects of the game
and why this is a new global phenomenon from my
perspective, of course.
So first of all we have to consider that it was a phenomenon since end of 90’s when the anime adaptation was aired in the TV and then Pokemon always
has been present in our live. Different version of
the game has been launched over the years but was
like more of the “same” until this new version appears with the illusion that you can find Pokemon
in the streets, and above all, you can interact with
others players in the real life.
Pokemon Go changes the typical individual and
competitive way to play and opens space for the
cooperative and interactive games, because you
must get out of your house for looking Pokemon
in the street, parks, beach, etc and you can do it
with your friends, also when you get the level 5
you have to choose between 3 teams: Mystic,Valor
or Instinct. This make you associate with strangers
only for be in the same team with the purpose of
dominate the gyms and get stronger training yours
Pokemon with they, but too defend the gym from
the others teams.
Personally I’m not gamer but anyway I joined to the
“hype” for the game, some friends send to me the
link with the APK and I couldn’t wait for the official version. Near of my house the supermarkets
are gyms, the statues and graffitis are Pokestops
(where you can get some loot) and I loved the idea
of have to walk (or run) a few km for open the eggs,
stimulating the physical activity. I think that isn’t difficult learn how to play so people of all ages can
enjoy it, even a US news anchor can entertain with
it (like Allison Kropff who interrupted the weather
forecast looking for Pokemon xD).
The bad side of this game is that you must have
a smartphone compatible (android version 4.4 as
minimum or IOS, gg windows phone), mobile internet too, and the battery discharges very fast. Also in
countries like Chile where the criminal rate is high,
your cellphone could be in danger in some places
and the server collapses with all the people that
wants to play it (without considered that only the
APK was availed for some people, not the official
version for all).
We don’t know when the game will be available in
our country, but the rumors say that could be at
the end of the month or in August. Anyway, we are
waiting for it and we hope that will be launch as
soon as possible <3
Gotta catch ’em all!

My first expo in Santiago. I must say, I was somewhat disappointed. I expected more.
There were a few Goku’s on the metro on the way
to Quinta Normal Station, their orange costumes
brightening up a cold, overcast, wintery Santiago
Sunday. Outside the building a Cosplay Goku posed
for photos with members of the public. There was
no visible information desk so we (a friend & I)
headed for the nearest entrance. In the first space
there was a display of Dragonball figures and games
and a few full-sized photos of the main characters
from the series strategically placed on the walls
around the room. It was difficult to get a good view
of the figures without pushing through a crowd of
people. In my opinion, it would have been better to
have organized a walk-by system so that everybody
had a chance to look. It must have been quite frustrating for younger visitors as there was a constant
wall of people blocking the view. There were also
a few pictures – possibly part of a Drawing competition but I can’t be sure because they weren’t
labelled. The next room had 2 computers (which
housed the video games) which was obviously nowhere near enough for the demand. There was
also a female cosplay character but I didn’t recog-
nize her so she must have been from a later series
(Dragonball Z?). The 3rd room had 3 stalls selling
merchandise but very little of it was related to
Dragonball. There was also a large TV which projected the opening theme of the series on repeat.
Both Tv & stalls were crowed. Across the patio in
the library projection room you could see the first
episode of the anime. To do so, you have to get a
ticket and wait for the next showing. All in all, my
friend and I spent 30 minutes at the expo but didn’t
find anything interesting enough to make our visit
worthwhile. Personally, I would have expected to
see a lot more fan-run stalls that allowed people
to sell or swap articles (I was hoping to actually
find some mangas that I need to complete my collection and I’m quite amazed that there were no
Dragonball mangas available at the EXPO GOKU.
It’s a pity that I would have had more luck finding
what I was after in Portal Lyon than the Dragonball
Expo and I think that’s a shame. Nevertheless, the
young children seemed to be enjoying themselves.
