Anime Festival Orlando 15 Anime Festival Orlando (AFO) 15 took place on July 25 -27, 2014, at the Wyndham Orlando Resort International Drive. The Guests of Honor were Sean Schemmel (Goku, Dragonball Z Kai), Kari Wahlgren (Haruko, FLCL), Stephanie Shea (Sailor Moon, Sailor Moon), Cristina Vee (Sailor Mars, Sailor Moon), Erica Mendez (Ryuko Matoi, Kill La Kill), Lucien Dodge (Waver Velvet, Fate/Zero), and Ruben Langdon (Dante, Devil May Cry). The convention came back to its traditional hotel, the Wyndham on International Drive. Last year, the hotel went through a renovation that redistributed the convention space. Parts of the old convention center were demolished in favor of outdoor restaurants. The new areas that were built to make up for the lost space were adequate: the con had the same amount of space for panels and activities, and were accessible. I presented a panel on Science Fiction Anime, an expansion of a panel I did at AFO 12. I added newer shows like Bodacious Space Pirates, From a New World, Psycho-Pass, Attack on Titan, Space Dandy, and Space Brothers. The panel was well attended and there was good response from the audience. During the con, I decided I should prepare panel focusing on Fantasy Anime next year. I also presented a history of the Japanese space opera Space Battleship Yamato. This year is Yamato’s 40th anniversary. The presentation discussed the creative team behind the original show: Yoshinobu Nishizaki (co-creator/producer), Leiji Matsumoto (co_creator/art direction), Noberu Ishiguro (director), and Hiroshi Miyagawa (composer). The panel explored each show, film, and video game connected with Yamato. At the end, I compared the original debut of the Wave Motion Gun (the Y amato’s powerful weapon) with its counterpart in Space Battleship Y amato 2199, the recent reimaging of the original show released last year. The art, animation, and pacing greatly improved over the 38 years between the two shows. At the panel, I found out the first part of the English release is already available. Kent Ward and Shane Morawaski of the Propeller Anime anime club and podcast gave us the history of Trigger, a studio founded by former employees of Gainax, the anime studio started by fans in the 80s. Hiroyuki Imaishi and Masahiko Ohtsuka established the studio in 2011. Trigger first produced a low budget, but very funny web animated series called Inferno Cop. Their next production was a short film called Little Witch Academia, a humorous look at a magical school, written by Ohtsuka and directed by Masahiko Otsuka. A Kickstarter campaign funded a follow-up film and reached its goal in under 5 hours. Trigger’s biggest success is the series Kill La Kill, an over top comedy about a post-apocalyptic high school, revenge and clothing. Kill La Kill was popular with fans and critics. Daryl Surat of the A nime W orld Order podcast looked at the series and films that were referenced in Kill La Kill. He played clips from these earlier works and compared them to Kill La Kill. Some of these works included Project A-Ko, Fist of the North Star, Armored Troopers VOTOMS, and Aim for the Ace. Surat posted a complete list of all the references on the Anime World Order under the title “ List of titles shown at Otakon 2014”. Daryl Surat and his co-host Gerald Rathkolb looked at the history of Ninja in Anime. Their talk became broader, since they discussed the appearance of ninja in Western film. They showed one of the earliest anime releases in the United States, Magic Boy (released in 1961 by MGM). The film is about a boy with magical powers that are ninja-like. The first use of the word “ninja” in a Western film was Y ou Only Live Twice, where it was a name given to special operatives in the Japanese secret service. Other works shown included Ninja Scroll, Naruto, Ursuei Yatsura, Ninja III: The Domination and The Octagon (starring Chuck Norris). Surat and Rathkolb pointed out that while ninjas are renowned for their stealth, most films and shows have ninjas that stand out in a crowd. Naruto wears a shirt of safety orange and most the ninjas of the film Ninja: Silent Assassin have the word “ninja” embroidered on their headbands. The full list of ninja works is at the same place on Anime World Order website as the Kill La Kill references. There were 65 entries in the Anime Music Video Contest this year, but only 29 were shown due time restrictions. All of the winning videos can be found on animevideos.org and on YouTube (see afoamv.theforgotten.com/2014.php). Lacy Amobea did a yoga class based around Sailor Moon on Saturday and Sunday. Daryl Surat discussed wrestling in Japan and its links with anime. There were panels on the history of Mobile Suit Gundam and Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. There was packed demonstration explaining how to do the poses in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. There were panels that looked into the craft of making Anime Music Videos. There was a continuation of the live action role-playing game called Rocket Rangers of Orlandia. It was a fun and well-organized convention. Now I need to work on some new panels to present next year. Etobicoke, ON CANADA M9C 2B2 July 1, 2014 August 13, 2014 Dear Juan: Dear OASFiSians: It is officially Canada Day, the 147th anniversary of the founding of this country, and we’ve some great celebrations outside today, but we’ve got to think about work in the morning. So, I am ready for tomorrow, but there is such a stack of fanzines that need response, and I have fallen behind a little with the Event Horizon. So, here are comments on the June and July issues, 319 and 320. While Juan is away in London for Worldcon, I am in Toronto, wishing I was there, but knowing that staying home certainly helps with the still-fragile finances. In the meantime, I can get caught on somethings, like a letter of comment on the August Event Horizon, issue 321. I think that may be all for the moment…hope your summer is hot, hot, hot, and your fandom is fun. Take care, and see you with the next issue. Wish there was more to write about, but time is short, and I have to get to work. Take care, and tell us all about Detcon and Loncon next issue. Yours, Lloyd Penney. Yours, Lloyd Penney. Attack on Titan is one of the most popular anime to come out in recent years. When I was in Britain, I saw people wearing the uniform jackets as clothing rather than costumes. If you are curious you can see on it on Crunchyroll.com. There its free if you are willing to put up with 3 commercial breaks per episode. It also available on Netflix and being broadcast in the US on Cartoon Network on Saturday night as part of the Toonami block. I plan to do a Detcon 1 and Loncon 3 report n the next few months. Detcon did well in all aspects. Didn't get to Detcon, either, but hear all kinds of good things about it. Haven't heard more about attendance numbers and fiJune…my best to Roger Sims, an old friend, and hugs to Pat. nances…let's hope it's not Debtcon. One thing we did do, someHope everyone enjoys their Fourth of July party; we had some thing we haven't done in a long time, is buy new books, The party here ourselves. We were vendors at Anime North, a huge Book of Life by Deborah Harkness, and The Magicians' Land anime convention in Toronto, and even though I am not an anime by Lev Grossman. Lev will be in the Toronto area for a signing fan, there were uniforms everywhere we were told were from the tour in November. anime Attack on Titan. Seems extremely popular. We plan to go to the Saturday daytime only for the Grand Canadian Steampunk Not having Worldcon memberships, we did not vote on the HuExposition, which means we will miss Professor Elemental, gos, but as always, I am interested to see who wins, and these Steam Powered Giraffe, Jardin Mechanique and Abney Park. days, see if I recognize the names of any of the winners. I suspect I won't, but then, they don't know me, either… July…Detcon is indeed on the horizon, and while it is a short drive away from me, in Detroit, we will not be going. We have Just past…a weekend-long event in the village of Coldwater, found jobs, but there are overdue bills to pay and sources of about 100 miles north of Toronto, the Coldwater Steampunk Fesmoney to pay back. I expect it will be quite a while before we go tival, and we had ourselves a fine time. Any excuse to get out-ofto another Worldcon again, if ever. Someone had the idea of towners in the give local business a boost is a good one. Coming mixing the convention’s con suite? You want people to mingle up shortly, in about 10 days, is a small steampunk bazaar called and make new friends, and that’s what a con suite does. Suburban Steam, and we will be vendors there. The Magicians’ Land is on my list to be read before the end year. I really like the first 2 books in the series.
