MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Country Director Message
About Islamic Relief
Protecting Life & Dignity
Empowering Communities
I greet you with Salutations of Peace and Blessings
The Islamic Relief family’s global core values of social justice, sincerity, excellence, compassion and custodianship
are the driving force underpinning the successes of Islamic Relief South Africa (IRSA).
Campaigning for Change
South African Development Projects
Seasonal Projects – Ramadaan
These universal core values has inspired the dedicated South African team, under the guidance and leadership of the
Country Director, Br Yusuf Patel, to expand our activities and bring about social change in vulnerable communities
affected by natural and man-made disasters in Africa, Asia and South-East Asia.
One of the significant achievements of the South African office in 2014 was hosting and facilitating an important
regional consultation in conjunction with UNOCHA. The findings of this forum will be presented at the historic World
Humanitarian Summit 2016 in Istanbul.
This experience has highlighted the strategic role IRSA could play in the SADC region and on the African continent.
Our developmental and relief interventions have already positively impacted families in Malawi, Zimbabwe and
Chad. We are now exploring the idea of positioning our South African office as a regional hub for the Islamic Relief
global family.
Fundraising Events
In South Africa, we have noted a significant positive change in the disadvantaged communities in which we work
in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg. Our success can be attributed to innovative and creative programmes
which the team has developed. This integrated, holistic and community-drivel model is a more balanced between
our relief work and a long-term developmental approach. This will ensure that IRSA’s projects and programmes, in
partnership with other organizations/institutions will contribute positively towards breaking the cycle of poverty in
the communities that we work.
Strengthening the IR family
In conclusion, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the IRSA team, their families and the countless volunteers
for their commitment and dedication. I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to our donors who have
continued to support us over the years. Last, but not least, I would like to thank my fellow trustees for their support
and would like to welcome our new trustee, Professor Khadija Moloi to the IRSA Board of Trustees.

COUNTRY DIRECTOR MESSAGE
ABOUT ISLAMIC RELIEF
As salamu alaykum
Peace be upon you all
Islamic Relief is an independent humanitarian and development organisation with a presence in over 40
countries around the globe. We have been fighting poverty and injustice since 1984.
In 2014, Islamic Relief as a global family served more people than ever
before. This helped cement Islamic Relief’s standing as one of the most
impactful faith based non-profit organizations in the world.
Our local projects focused mainly on providing access to quality education, healthcare and basic needs to the most
vulnerable communities in South Africa.
Integrated sustainable development formed the basis of our work. The orphans and vulnerable children’s (OVC)
programme was also enhanced with the establishment of our Geographic Information System desk. This new
computerised systems allows us to capture details of each child and location so that we can improve our work on
the ground.
Inspired by the Islamic faith and guided by our values, we
believe that people with wealth have a duty to those less
fortunate – regardless of race, political affiliation,
gender or belief.

and international programme spend increased to ZAR 4.3 million for 2014.
The year ahead will bring with it a renewed sense of responsibility to local and international communities across
the globe. We remain mindful of our humble beginnings and our values, rooted in the teachings of the Islamic faith
that calls us to restore a dignity that God gave to the children of Adam.
We thank our dedicated staff, our selfless volunteers around the world for all their efforts, our generous donors
for their on-going support, and to all those with whom we worked in partnership to reduce poverty and suffering

RESPONSE
Since 6 March, an estimated 65,000 people fled their
homes in the Saraf Omra area, North Darfur, following
clashes between paramilitary forces led by Musa Hilal and
Government forces.
An inter-agency mission, which included an Islamic Relief
Worldwide team, visited the Umtajok village in the Kreneik locality in
West Darfur. The mission found an estimated 5,200 people displaced
from Saraf Omra of North Darfur were identified.
These people were found to be in need of emergency household items, food,
as well as water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services, health and nutrition.
Islamic Relief Worldwide intervened in the health sector with the support of Islamic Relief South Africa.
PROJECT SUCCESSES
The project helped Islamic Relief to expand the provision of a comprehensive package of Primary Health
Care (PHC) services to the Murayat clinic, which is under IRW operation.
The project provided essential drugs, medical equipment and laboratory reagents as free health services.
Free treatment and medical checks of up to 5396 persons have been provided.

the educational, spiritual and psycho-social needs of its students.
BONELLA ORPHANAGE, DURBAN
Islamic Relief provides monthly groceries and structural support to the Bonella Orphanage in KwaZulu Natal. The orphanage is home to over 70 children and provides for their development, educational,
nutritional and social needs. This support has lasted for about 9 years. 2014 will be the last year of this
agreement.
Mfuleni Development Centre, Cape Town
Mfuleni is an underprivileged community on the outskirts of Cape Town. It has one of the highest
unemployment levels. Around 52,300 people live in this township. Islamic Relief South Africa established
a fully operational computer lab. This resource centre is equipped with computers for skills development
and training. An internet café is also run from the facility as means to generate income for the centre.
The formal funding agreement – which is worth USD
$10 million – marks the beginning of our funding
an oncology centre in South Africa, which will
transform life-saving care for children across
the region Africa.
Africa as a whole suffers from a dire lack of
dedicated paediatric facilities, with only four
such facilities on the continent - two in Cairo
(a general paediatric hospital and an oncology
centre), one in Nairobi and one in Cape Town.
This compares dismally to the 23 children’s
hospitals in Canada, 19 in Australia and 20 in
Germany.
The ‘Islamic Relief Oncology Centre of Excellence’
is being hailed as a fitting tribute to the legacy of
Nelson Mandela.
According to the Trust, the new facility will be a “world
class, highly advanced specialised children’s hospital which
will shape the lives of the children of Africa and the future of a
greater Africa”.
The hospital will provide health care, and also serve as a research and training facility in order to have a
broad scope and geographical reach.

project, contact us for more details.
2 OCEANS EDUCATION FOUNDATION (2OEF)
The 2 Oceans Education Foundation (2OEF) is the primary and high
school education implementation partner of Islamic Relief South
Africa.
This 2OEF have been involved in establishing educational
institutions for the past 30 years in impoverished communities
in South Africa.
As partners we believe that value-based quality education is
key to moulding a caring, nurturing child and building a unified
nation.
In 2014, Islamic Relief South Africa funded in excess of R7,9
million in educational projects in Ennerdale, Khayelitsha, Mitchell’s
Plain and Manenberg.
We aim to achieve this objective by providing affected and out-of-school
children in poverty, crisis, and conflict-affected environments with a fully
sponsored course of quality primary and high school education.

SEASONAL PROJECT - RAMADAAN
ORPHANS IFTAAR
The Islamic Relief family enjoyed the most successful Ramadaan campaign in our history in 2014,
The time of Iftaar is a celebration with food, and often a familial experience.
It is stated that:
Alhamdulillah.
Our field offices managed to distribute a record 214,155 food packs in 30 countries and areas in Asia,
Africa and Eastern Europe, reaching a record 1.1 million people of the poorest of the poor, people who
are struggling to get their daily meals to sustain their lives and wellbeing.
The Ramadaan food distribution programme, Insha-Allah will continue to target the most vulnerable
groups and destitute people; we will continue our efforts to reach and access people who live in remote
areas and thus are extra disadvantaged.
Islamic Relief and the millions of beneficiaries would like to thank all our donors and partner organization

for his is the same reward as his (the fasting person’s), without anything
being diminished from the reward of the fasting person.” –Jami’at atTirmidhi, The Book on Fasting, (Book 8, Hadith 126)
Islamic Relief provided this platform for donors, by giving them an
opportunity to help those who are less fortunate. The annual orphans Iftaar
was held in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town.
More than 400 children nationally were treated to an amazing day
filled with lots of memories and laughter. Donors were invited to

never need to ask for help accessing water again.
JUMP FOR SYRIA
