MERRIE-WOODE
Situated, Celebrated on Fairfield Lake
Spring 2013
Revisiting Merrie-Woode With the Orrs
Dottie and Fritz Orr, Jr.
Augusta and Fritz Orr, Sr.
In February, our resident camp historian,
Lindsay Hostetler, traveled to South Georgia to
visit with Fritz and Dottie Orr and their daughter,
Sallie Orr Peterkin. The Orr family owned MerrieWoode from 1951 – 1978, and Fritz and Dottie were
the Directors from 1968 – 1978. Sallie spent many
years at Merrie-Woode as a grandchild, a child, a
camper and a counselor. Merrie-Woode Foundation
Board Member and alumna, Mary Davis Smart, and
former Board Member and alumna, Henri Dibrell
Brown, accompanied Lindsay, as both Mary Davis
and Henri were campers and counselors during the
Orr years at camp.
Lindsay, Mary Davis, and Henri arrived in
Thomasville, GA on a gray and misty winter’s
day, but the warm, southern hospitality of Fritz
and Dottie made them feel right at home! Fritz and
Dottie reminisced with Henri and Mary Davis about
wonderful camp memories. Lindsay spent the day
furiously taking notes and filming the interview
to keep for future reference as she continues to fill
in gaps in the Merrie-Woode timeline. As Lindsay
works towards adding to camp’s archive materials
and completing a record of the history of MerrieWoode, this time with the Orrs was invaluable.

Camp Merrie-Woode, Spring 2013
At Wit’s End
Greetings from camp! It certainly has been
an exciting off-season, as we happily added to
our year-round Merrie-Woode family. In October,
our Facilities Manager, Travis Fox, and his wife,
Amber, welcomed sweet Cayley Grace into their
family. Then in early November, our Associate
Director, Betsy Reese Helms, gave birth to
precious William “Owen” Helms. Josh and Betsy
may have quite the camp celebrity living in Pearly
Gates this summer. He may even be more popular
than One Direction and Justin Bieber!
We have seen many of you as we traveled
throughout the Southeast this winter. Lindsay,
Jim, and I traveled to Washington, DC for an
alumnae gathering at the home of Justin and
Stephanie Blessey Lilley. Generations of alumnae
enjoyed reminiscing about their days at camp.
Sara Huffman took to the road for our staff
recruiting trips; she visited colleges where we
Denice with Travis Fox’s baby girl, Cayley
Lindsay has spent many long hours working
with the web designers and the end result has
been worth the wait. The staff has also enjoyed
teaming up with Board members to begin the
implementation of the Strategic Plan, adopted in
2012.
You’ll read later in the newsletter about how
busy our facilities crew has been this winter and
spring. We are enjoying the office renovations
that were completed in January. The facilities
crew is now hard at work on the new Bang Shop
and Gem Box (Jewelry workshop) renovations
and the Barn renovations. The spring will
continue to be full of activity at camp, as the crew
prepares for this summer.
We are counting down the weeks to the
upcoming 95th camp season at Merrie-Woode.
The camp enrollment is at capacity and a high
percentage of last summer’s counselors are
excited to return. We are thrilled that MerrieWoode continues to enrich the lives of so many
young campers and counselors after so many
years of operation. Mark your calendars for the
95th Anniversary Celebration on Sunday, July
14th. We look forward to seeing you there.
Chug-a-Wump!
“Chug-a-Wump” from Owen Helms
have current counselors and potential new staff
members. Jim and I have been busy assisting with
the college visits and the spring camper shows.
There are a lot of excited campers ready to make
their way back to the mountains for the 95th camp
season at Camp Merrie-Woode. When we weren’t
on the road we enjoyed visits at camp from many
of our current counselors.
The office is buzzing with activity. Our new
Administrative Assistant, Joni Wavra, joined the
year-round staff in February. We are thrilled to
have her with us, as she attempts to keep us all
in line! We are excited about the long awaited
launch of our new Merrie-Woode website.

Staff News
Ivory Sparks, Margaret Page, Campbell
Bowers, and Tara Tecce
Thank you, staff, for
staying in touch with us during
the off-season. We always love
hearing from you! Recently
Caroline Bach reported that she
is going to Bryn Mawr College
next year. After trying out for
Tulane Cheerleading and the
TCU Showgirls in the Spring,
Mary Eliza Baker will make
her final college decision. Ellie
Boydston is doing a Semester at
Sea program through UGA. How
cool is that?! We have had plenty
of staff visitors this off-season.
Between the Green Race, the
3rd annual “Kounselor Kamp,”
and the Counselor Consortium,
we have seen members of the
Merrie-Woode staff nearly every
month this year! Tee Bowers,
Stuart Drew, Rachel Garrett,
Jack Howick, Katie Martinez,
Ivory Sparks, and Bolling
Winborne were our most recent
visitors. They came to camp for
a weekend in early March. It
snowed while they were here,
so they went to Sapphire Valley
Resort and went snow tubing.
What fun! Rachel Garrett,
Ivory Sparks, Eliza Williams,
and Bolling Winborne went out
west for an epic spring break
trip. The crew traveled through
the four corners of the southwest
hitting surrounding highlights
including Arches National
Park, the Grand Canyon, Mesa
Verde National Park, and even
parts of the Navajo Nation.
At the end of the trip, they
met up with CMW alumna
Riley Dickey (97-09) in Red
Rocks, CO to see the legendary
outdoor amphitheater. Riley
came prepared with costumes
to make the visit memorable! If
you happen to be in Edinburgh
Scotland, stop by and say hi to
Lillie Cochran! She is living
there while working toward her
Master’s Degree in Business
Management at the University
of Edinburgh. Hey, staff at
Carolina! MacKinsey Cole is
looking forward to joining you
all in Chapel Hill next year! The
good news from Sarah Davis
is that she is studying Theater
and Playwriting in London for
the semester. We heard from
Ashley Helmick and camper, Margaret
Shufflebarger
Madeline Edwards that she won
the State Department’s Critical
3
Language Scholarship to study
Arabic in Amman, Jordan for 2
months this summer. Speaking
of studying abroad, Julia
Haman studied in Cambridge,
England this past summer and
is currently studying abroad
in Costa Rica for the semester.
Adrianna Grossman is hoping
to stop by camp this summer for
a visit before spending a year
earning her Masters in Public
Health. She plans to complete
that degree before moving to
Chicago to attend the University
of Chicago for Medical School.
After graduating from Mary
Washington University, Alex
Green began working at the
Swan Coach House at the Atlanta
History Center. She is learning
about exhibit curation in the
Center’s art gallery. After a
busy summer at Merrie-Woode,
Ashley Helmick has had plenty
going on this off-season. She
is working at her church in
Jacksonville, FL as the Assistant
Youth Director. Ashley is
planning a trip to go to Australia
this April and hopes to catch
up with some of our MerrieWoode Aussie girls! Speaking
of Aussies, we are thrilled to
announce that Kelli Hewitt is
returning to Merrie-Woode this
summer! Kelli says she is still
working for the same travel
agency company for whom she
has worked for the last year or
two. Kelli lives in Sydney and
is saving her money to pay off
Camp Merrie-Woode, Spring 2013
Emily Rich, Ashlee Collins, and Abi Housley
some South America treks she
has booked for after camp! After
nearly 4 years at Northwestern
University, Sarah Logan is
working on her senior thesis
in time for graduation. Upon
completion of her Bachelor’s
degree, Sarah will move to
DC in May. Caity Mans was
recently accepted to the M.A.
program in Medieval Studies at
the University of Toronto and is
still waiting to hear back from
other schools before she makes
her final decision about where
to attend graduate school in
the fall! Speaking of graduate
school, Maddie Marion will be
starting graduate school in the
fall at Converse College where
she plans to work towards her
Masters in Marriage and Family
Therapy. Meanwhile, Maddie
is looking forward to a great
summer at Merrie-Woode, as
well as moving to Spartanburg,
SC afterwards! Maddie recently
caught up with Kara Leigh
Pulley, who said she interviewed
with SUWS Carolinas and Teach
for America and is in contact
with Heart Light, an at-risk youth
boarding school. Hopefully by
mid-March she will know her
post-graduation plans. Kara
Leigh is spending spring break
living on a sailboat for a week
in the Bahamas; she is excited to
learn how to crew a boat for 20!
During May, Katie Martinez
will be travelling to Costa Rica
with the UNC-Chapel Hill
business school before returning
to camp for the summer. Have
fun, Katie! Congratulations
to Mica McCullough who
graduated in December from
Lipscomb University with her
Master’s Degree in Sustainable
Food Systems. Mica lives in
Nashville, TN and is currently
looking for a sustainability job.
Jane Darby Menton emailed to
tell us that she is spending two
weeks in Greece studying the
country’s financial crisis with
a group of students from Yale
University. As a junior at New
College of Florida, Emily Rich
reports that she is in rehearsals
for Farragut North, which she
will be appearing in at the end
of April. During January, Emily
took a road trip to theaters where
she might want to work after
she graduates next year. Most
recently, Emily started writing
a play for her senior thesis. She
is nervous but excited about it!
Congrats to Kelsie Romaine
who was accepted to Mercer
University’s doctoral program
in clinical medical psychology!
After working with Outdoor
Pursuits at FSU for about a
year, Tara Tecce got promoted
to a supervisor position within
the program. Tara is still a trip
leader, but now she also has
more responsibilities overseeing
various aspects of Outdoor

Pursuits. Julie Van Hart ran her
first half marathon at the end of
February and placed 4th in her
age division! We were thrilled
to have Lucy Wood come
all the way from Australia to
participate in the 2013 counselor
consortium! She stayed at camp
for two whole weeks, and we
loved having her here for a visit!
While “in town,” Lucy went
recruiting at Sewanee and visited
the Bowers family in Charleston,
SC. Alicia Wright lives in
Brooklyn, NY and works as an
assistant to a book scout. She is
enjoying the job but says it is
intense! We hope to see Alicia
next time she comes south for a
visit.

Margaret “Peggy”
Perkins Casey (33-35) died at
the age of 92. She was battling
her seventh cancer and was cared
for in the loving home of her
daughter, Ann, for the last year
of her life. Peggy slipped away
peacefully in her sleep after
visits from all of her children,
grandchildren, daughters-in-law,
and pastor. She was born and
raised in Louisville, KY. She was
an amazing woman; energetic,
determined, independent, strong,
and adventurous. She was the first

of the Silver-Haired Jocks. The Silver-Haired Jocks,
life to the fullest right up to the end. Her years at
a spirited group of camp friends and enthusiasts,
Camp Merrie-Woode were some of her happiest

Camp Merrie-Woode, Spring 2013
Revisiting Merrie-Woode With the Orrs (cont. from page 1)
The Orr legacy began
when Fritz Orr Sr. purchased
Camp Merrie-Woode from
Dammie Day in 1951. At the
time, Merrie-Woode was just
40 acres with cabins Du Kum
Inn to Peter Pan. Fritz Sr. had
spent his adult life organizing
and running the Fritz Orr Clubs
and Camps in Atlanta, Georgia
from the 1920s – 1950s. As
Atlanta’s development began to
crowd his camps, he found that
Camp Merrie-Woode was for
sale. He and his wife, Augusta,
decided to buy it and move to
Sapphire Valley each summer.
Fritz Sr. had hoped to run
a boys camp, but Dammie Day
insisted that he continue the
all-girls tradition. He honored
her request, keeping MerrieWoode a summer haven for
girls. The Orrs added high
adventure and skill-based
activities to the traditions
begun by Dammie Day. Fritz
Sr. was an outdoor enthusiast
and both Fritz Sr. and Augusta
were accomplished riders.
The equestrian and riflery
programs, and the whitewater
paddling program all thrived
under the Orrs’ leadership.
Fritz Jr. and Dottie worked at
camp during these years and
were active members of the
camp community.
When Fritz Sr. died
unexpectedly in February of
1968, the Orr family chose
Fritz and Dottie to lead MerrieWoode. With their two young
children, Sallie and Fritz III,
beside them, they continued
building the Orr legacy at
camp. They emphasized
personal growth for both
campers and counselors and
were deeply committed to
Lindsay Hostetler, Mary Davis Smart, Fritz
Orr, Sallie Orr Peterkin, and Dottie Orr
providing each girl a rich and
lasting experience in the natural
world. In Fritz’s words, they
strived to:
“Provide an atmosphere for each
camper and staff member to grow
in a personal way, to provide
campers with opportunities for
advancement of skills in each
activity offered, to provide an
opportunity for campers and
staff to have contact with the
natural world, and to establish
an environment in which
Christianity is modeled and
permeates all living experiences
– not just as an objective but as a
total lifestyle.”
Fritz and Dottie devoted
the next decade to running
Merrie-Woode. They fostered
a nurturing environment, and
they encouraged both campers
and counselors to challenge
themselves in ways that would
strengthen their character. They
poured as much dedication into
developing their counselors as
they did their campers. They
were essentially running two
camps simultaneously – one
for the campers and one for the
counselors, knowing that the
opportunity for personal growth
existed for both.
Then came the economic
downturn of the 1970s. The
economic climate, coupled
with double-digit interest rates
10
and soaring gas prices, brought
dropping enrollments and
uncertainty to the country’s
entire camping industry. MerrieWoode was no exception. After
considering their choices, the
Orrs announced that they would
not reopen camp in 1979. MerrieWoode would have to close its
gates and the property would be
sold.
In 1978, in response to this
news and with the Orrs’ blessing,
Hugh Caldwell organized a group
of camp alumnae and families to
purchase camp and set it up as a
non-profit organization, run by a
board of trustees. They presented
this plan to the Orrs, but it was
clear that this newly formed
foundation would not have the
finances to purchase the camp’s
property for what it was worth.
It is at this moment in camp’s
history that the Orr family
became the real unsung heroes
of Camp Merrie-Woode. Rather
than sell for development, the
Orrs agreed to sell the camp – all

– to the newly formed MerrieWoode Foundation for a fraction
of its value. The Foundation
operated that first summer of
1979 with almost a completely
volunteer staff. They embraced
the spirit of sacrifice and service
put in place by Dammie Day
and preserved, celebrated, and
strengthened by the Orrs.
It is because of Fritz and
Dottie Orr’s selfless decision
that Merrie-Woode is still here
today. Merrie-Woode could have
had the same story as countless
other camps across the country
and shut down in the 1970s and
1980s, never to reopen again.
Instead, the Orrs stepped up to
the plate and decided to save an

organization with a spirit they
believed in, preserving MerrieWoode for generations of girls
to come. Every camper who
has called the shores of Lake
Fairfield home since then owes
a piece of their treasured camp
experience to Fritz and Dottie.
Listening to Fritz and
Dottie today, it is clear they
still hold a deep affection and
love for Merrie-Woode and the
generations of campers who have
come through her gates. And so,
Fritz and Dottie, we, as an entire
camp community say thank you.
Thank you for setting the stage
to bring Merrie-Woode into its
next act. We can never thank you
enough for keeping the curtain
from falling too soon. Thank you
for saving this special spot on
earth for us, for our daughters,
for our daughters’ daughters, and
for all the girls to come.
CMW Internship Program – Apply Now!
Are you passionate about
camp? Have you ever wondered
if there was a way to extend your
summer employment into the
colorful fall, snowy winter, and
maybe even into the blooming
spring months along Lake
Fairfield? There just may be
a way: apply for an internship
at camp. The Merrie-Woode
Internship Program is designed to
help promote and support camp’s
Mission and Strategic Plan
moving forward. This program
is mutually beneficial to the
camp community and the intern
as she learns more about the offseason workings of the camp and
a nonprofit business.
If you are in college or
if you have recently graduated
and you are interested in
learning more about the MerrieWoode Internship Program,
please contact Denice Dunn
at [email protected].
We are now accepting resumes
for our 2013/2014 internship
position. Come be a part of our
administrative team and learn
more about the inner workings of
camp.
Welcome Joni!
We are thrilled to announce Joni Wavra as our new
Administrative Assistant and
member of camp’s year-round
team! You might recognize Joni
from this past summer, when she
worked as our Program Office
Manager.
Before her family settled
in Cashiers, NC, more than 20
years ago, Joni lived all over the
country and even the world, including Utah, Las Vegas, South
Africa, Florida, Michigan, and
Oklahoma. After receiving her
Bachelor of Science degree from
Michigan State University, she
worked in Marine Ecology and
was a Scientific Diver with Walt
Disney World. Joni also has
Joni Wavra, CMW’s new Administrative
Assistant
experience in event planning,
country club marketing, property
management, and was a buyer
for women’s apparel. But her favorite job of all has always been
Mom! She has a son, Tyler (24),
and a daughter, Lynsi (22). Lynsi
is a student at the University of
Colorado, in Boulder, and Tyler
works in Highlands, NC, where
he is a member of the Volunteer
11
Fire Department. The Wavra
family has owned and operated
Ty-Lyn Plantation, a 54 acre
Christmas tree and truffle plantation, since they moved to the area
in 1993.
Joni loves to scuba dive,
read, tend her vegetable garden,
and can her goods! Recent additions to the family farm include
Hammer, the shelter dog, Roo,
the cross-eyed crazy cat, and
Sweet Pea, the beloved – and often sassy – pot-belly pig.
So the next time that you
call the camp office, be sure to
give a warm Merrie-Woode welcome to our new Administrative
Assistant, Joni Wavra!
Camp Merrie-Woode, Spring 2013
Off-Season Improvements
There are plenty of projects
underway at Merrie-Woode this
off-season. Although they still
have lots to accomplish, our
facilities crew has worked all
year on some important projects
that will make the summer
easier for everyone!
The renovated camp office
The year started off
with some much needed
improvements to the Main
Office. When you enter the
office you will notice some
big changes to the front area.
Joni, our new Administrative
Assistant, has a new desk space
just as you enter the office. The
renovation puts Joni closer to
the front door so that she is
there to greet any visitors who
stop by the office. The area
where Phyllis used to work
has been closed in with sliding
glass doors and provides work
space for two people. Now,
when Phyllis is here working on
special projects, she will have a
quiet spot to do her work. The
second work station in the new
office is where Sara Huffman,
our intern, works on archiving
and other important pre-summer
tasks.
The second project of the
year is a facelift for the barn.
When our horses arrive at camp
this summer, they will be in
for a treat. Their stalls have
been updated with automatic
waterers, fans, and rubber mats.
The corridor that runs the length
of the barn will be outfitted with
ceiling fans and a large exhaust
fan, and the space will be paved.
A new outdoor instruction area
is being built and all riding areas
will be leveled and topped off
with new sand. Additionally,
some landscaping will improve
the overall look of the barn,
making it an even more popular
place to spend time in the
summer. When asked if he had
ever seen anything so beautiful,
one of our horses replied,
“Naaayy.”
Perhaps the biggest offseason project of the year is
the construction of the new
and improved Bang Shop and
Gem Box. The Bang Shop is
our jewelry studio, and Gem
Construction of the new Bang Shop and
Gem Box
Box is non-cabin staff housing.
Both spaces were quite old
and in major need of repair, so
the facilities crew demolished
the structure and started from
scratch. Don’t worry; the new
building will fit right in with
12
the others around camp. It will
be sided with poplar bark and
roofed with green architectural
shingles to match its neighbors.
Additionally, by carefully
placing the new building,
we were able to preserve the
majestic trees surrounding it!
The new floor plan for the Bang Shop and
Gem Box
The good news for the
residents of Avalon and
Doxology is that the building’s
orientation will be reconfigured
so that the Bang Shop will be
closest to the Arts and Crafts
building and Gem Box will be
closer to Avalon and Doxology.
This means decreased noise
from the Bang Shop during rest
hour. You know, we don’t call it
the Bang Shop for nothing!
Speaking of the new Bang
Shop, it will be larger than the
original. The shop will house
more work stations and storage
and two soldering stations. It
will also boast ceiling fans,
improved lighting and windows,
an exhaust vent, and access to a
porch that overlooks the lake!
Adjacent to the Bang Shop,
Gem Box will have living
quarters for two staff members.
Each individual will have a
Camp Merrie-Woode, Spring 2013
Off-Season Improvements (cont.)
small bedroom and a private
bathroom, and there will be
a common living area with a
kitchenette.
Jewelry has always been a
well-loved camp activity, so we
are glad to be able to provide a
new structure for the program. In
fact, Mary Jane Trimble, a former
camper, counselor, and Board
Chairman made her husband’s
wedding band in the Bang Shop
while she was at camp. Once the
ring was finished, she began her
quest to find the right man with
the proper ring size. Eventually
she was successful!
As we go to print, the
building’s foundation is complete
and the framing is nearly
finished. It is really starting to
take shape! We can’t wait for
campers to arrive this summer
because we know they will enjoy
the new facilities and continue
the long standing tradition
of jewelry making at MerrieWoode!

Camp Merrie-Woode, Spring 2013
2nd Annual Father and Daughter Weekend
Merrie-Woode is happy to
announce our 2nd Annual Father
and Daughter Weekend! Camp
will open its gates to fathers and
daughters of the Merrie-Woode
family on September 27 – 29.
John Brantley will return to
camp again this year to lead the
weekend’s activities.
The success of last year’s
inaugural event led to plans to
continue this new tradition each
year after camp ends. Just as
the leaves were beginning to
change last October, thirteen
Merrie-Woode dads and their
daughters slept on the Front Line
after engaging in meaningful

conversations and adventurous
activities throughout the day. The
weekend is structured to let the
daughter take the lead in every
aspect, and each moment focuses
on strengthening communication
between the fathers and their
daughters.
“The program allows
you to have quiet time and
conversations with your daughter
that you don’t always make time
for,” said Brent Neidenthal,
Kaylee’s dad.
A father and daughter enjoy a quiet
conversation on the docks
Friday night begins with
field games and ends with
the first of many one-on-one
discussions between each family
group. On Saturday morning,
everyone races across camp
from one station to the next
in The Great Race. The girls
decide which route to take, and
each family must work together
through mentally and physically
challenging tasks in order to
make it to the finish line. And
after a vigorous water cannon
battle, the Merrie-Woode fathers
and daughters gather in the
Campfire Ring to cap off the
night with camp songs, s’mores,
and maybe even a Jack Tale!
Perhaps the most
meaningful experience from the
Robert and Cecilia Reed at the CMW Father

is that the dads finally have a
chance to see what camp is all
about.
“My experience with camp
has always been limited to
seven minutes dropping her off
and picking her up,” said Perry
Borom, Judith’s dad, “so it was
great to actually come see all of
the things that camp has to offer.”
Families can register easily
through our new website! The
cost per father/daughter pair
is $550, and $110 for each
additional daughter. These fees
include all meals and lodging,

Alums from last year’s weekend
should not hesitate to return, as
the weekend will strengthen and
build upon the same valuable
skills.
And don’t worry, all of
you Merrie-Woode moms! We
are working on a weekend in
Spring of 2014 for you, too.
So stay tuned-in to the website

Camp Merrie-Woode, Spring 2013
CMW Hosts 4th Counselor Consortium
2013 Counselor Consortium
This January we hosted
our fourth biennial Counselor
Consortium with 22 counselors
and 3 members of the Board.
Once again, the consortium was
wildly successful and tons of
fun!
We first hosted a consortium of counselors during the
winter of 2005. Jim and Denice
had just completed their second
summer as Executive Directors
and were interested in connecting
with long-time staff members to
find out what aspects of camp the
counselors thought were going
well and what needed improvement. That year we hosted 13
counselors during the first weekend of February. That weekend,
we discussed traditions including
Campfire, the Ripple, and Follow the Gleam; we also talked
about programming, counselor
life, and cabin life. By the end of
the weekend, we had pages and
pages of notes on how to breathe
new life into tired Sunday activities, new evening programs that
campers would enjoy, tips about
cabin life to be shared with all
staff members, and a few points
of improvement for the betterment of the Merrie-Woode community. That first consortium
was so successful that we vowed
to host one every other year. So,
flash forward to this winter and
our 4th consortium, to date!
Each time we host this
event, it takes us hours to select our attendees. We invite
15-25 counselors and 2-3 board
members. Although we did not
have board members at the first
consortium, we believe it is important to involve the board in
this activity because it allows
the Board to hear what the staff
members are concerned about
while allowing the staff members
to feel that their voices are being
heard. We select staff to attend
by looking at staff evaluations
from the summer in order to understand who is well respected
by their peers. We consider who
Counselors, Board members, and yearround-staff meet at the Counselor
Consortium to brainstorm ways to improve
summers at Merrie-Woode
held leadership positions during
the previous summer and who
will be holding those positions
in the upcoming summer. We
attempt to invite staff members
from a range of different activity
areas, different cabin age groups,
and different universities. The
goal is always to generate conversation and ideas for upcoming
summers, so we look for staff
members with effective com15

munication skills, as well as the
ability to clearly articulate their
opinions. This year we had 22
counselor attendees, as well as
Liz Irwin, Melanie Crittenden,
and Mary Davis Smart representing the Board of Trustees.
Many thanks, Liz, Melanie, and
Mary Davis for taking time out
of your busy schedules to spend
the weekend with us. We loved
having you here, and the staff enjoyed getting to know you all.
We kicked off our consortium with dinner on Friday and
plenty of catching up with old
friends. Everyone was so excited
to be back together that very little
business was discussed that evening! We woke up early on Saturday morning to participate in a
leadership discussion with guest
speaker, Jenny Beaumont. Jenny
helped refresh our communication skills and empowered us to
be leaders within the camp community. We appreciate Jenny’s
presence and cannot thank her
enough for spending the morning
with us! After Jenny’s session,
the group spent the rest of the
day meeting in both small groups
and larger round-table gatherings to discuss myriad aspects of
Camp Merrie-Woode, Spring 2013
CMW Hosts 4th Counselor Consortium (cont. from page 15)
the summer. We covered topics
from campfire and chapel to orientation and evening programs.
We spent much of the afternoon
covering both counselor life and
cabin life before breaking for
dinner.
Speaking of dinner, we
had quite a time that night. The
Dunns hosted a Great Gatsby
themed evening at their house on
Saturday night. Their home was
decked out in lights, feathers, and
plenty of 1920s décor. Dressed
in our best tuxedos and flapper
dresses, everyone in attendance
was treated to salmon, spinach
salad, mashed potatoes, roasted
asparagus, and chocolate tarts.
It was quite a meal and quite a
party! We danced the night away
and were thankful to be together
for the weekend.
Sunday morning was
filled with more meetings about
programming and summer activities. We discussed material
needs, facility requests, staff certifications, and general programming concerns. Our weekend
ended with a delicious brunch of
eggs, bacon, pancakes, and fruit
before we all went our separate
ways.
Just like the consortiums
of years past, this winter’s weekend was a great opportunity for
Senior Staff to hear directly from
staff members about what is going well at camp. We will continue hosting these events because
they open the lines of communication and allow us to work hard
toward the betterment of camp.
Indeed, we are reminded that
Merrie-Woode is “a composite
thing made up of all those who
through the years have loved it
and given it their best.”
Annual Fund Tops $176,000 in 2012!
Fund is an essential source of revenue for Camp
Merrie-Woode. This fund is used to support scholarships, enhance summer programs, and maintain
Merrie-Woode’s historic buildings and grounds. All
contributions to the Merrie-Woode Foundation
are tax deductible for individuals, corporations,
and foundations within the limits of section 501
(c) 3 of the IRS code. Gifts are listed through December 31, 2012. Please contact us with any errors
or omissions.
We have excellent news to report on our
2012 Annual Fund Campaign. Merrie-Woode alumnae, parents, and friends continue to support our
Annual Giving effort, even in these difficult economic times. In 2012, 604 participants contributed
a total of $176,242.17 to the Merrie-Woode 2012
Annual Fund, setting a new record!
With the tremendous success we have seen
in our Annual Fund over the last few years, we are
raising the goal for 2013 to $150,000. The Annual
