We’ve been working hard to bring you the biggest timetable change this flagship route has seen in a generation. That’s on top of our ongoing improvements to our trains, stations and ticket offers. The new East Coast timetable has been nearly 20 years in the making and has been developed in collaboration with our industry partners. It launches on 22 May 2011 and some of the fantastic benefits you can look forward to include: z z z z 19 new train services every weekday more than three million extra seats per year improved frequency and pattern of train services many of our typical journeys are faster than ever And that’s not all. We’re also introducing new services, including: z z z a return service from London King’s Cross to Harrogate return services between Lincoln and London King’s Cross a new “Flying Scotsman” early morning service from Edinburgh to London King’s Cross in just four hours, stopping at Newcastle only and arriving in London at 09.40 Passengers travelling in First Class can look forward to a new quiet coach and a fantastic new complimentary at-seat food and drinks service. We can’t wait to share these great new improvements with you and look forward to welcoming you on board soon. Welcome to East Coast! Karen Boswell Managing Director, East Coast Welcome to our new timetable We’re pleased to announce that our brand new timetable will be introduced from 22 May 2011. It includes some new routes, while existing services will benefit from more frequent trains, many faster journey times and improved connections. Keep up with the changes To accommodate such significant changes and improvements into our new timetable, many services have been re-timed. We recommend regular travellers check the new timings before you travel, as your usual service may have changed. More trains, more often We want to get you on your way as soon as possible so we’re now running an extra 19 trains every weekday – that’s an amazing three million more seats a year. That means you should never have to wait too long before the next East Coast train arrives. Speed is of the essence We’ve introduced some speedy services that will whisk you from the north to London before you can say “faster journey”. Check out these super speedy journeys: z z z 2 Edinburgh to London – from just 4 hours (05.40 from Edinburgh Monday – Friday) Newcastle to London – from just 2 hours 37 minutes (07.03 from Newcastle Monday – Friday) Leeds to London – from just 1 hour 59 minutes (07.00 from Leeds Monday – Friday) New direct services We’re introducing a new direct service between Lincoln and London meaning that you no longer need to change trains. Plus our new London to Harrogate train will run seven days a week, so you can travel there and back with ease. A journey to remember Here at East Coast, we’re passionate about train timetables – but we know not everyone finds them so thrilling! So we’ve made sure our key services depart around the same time every hour to help our passengers remember them more easily. Be our guest It’s not just our timetable that’s changed. We’re making it our mission to make your journey the best it can be from when you arrive at the station to when you reach your destination. From 22 May, passengers travelling in First Class will receive complimentary food and drink on board. You’ll be served refreshments at your seat by our friendly on-board team. For shorter journeys, you’ll be offered non-alcoholic drinks and snacks while on longer trips you can look forward to something a little more substantial. Our menu will vary according to the time of the day and the season – but it will always be delicious. Breakfast Don’t worry, our famous bacon butties aren’t going anywhere! But we’ve added a wide range of other tempting treats to our complimentary breakfast menu which will be served until around 11.00, including healthy and vegetarian options. Early birds travelling before 09.30 can count on a great British breakfast. 3 4 During the day From around 11.00, choose from a selection of sandwiches, a light lunch or a hot dish rounded off with a piece of fruit or a cake, all served at your seat and accompanied by complimentary drinks from our trolley. In addition, afternoon tea will be served on selected journeys between 15.00 and 16.30. Evening On selected services which depart London between 17.00 and 19.15, complimentary evening meals will be served at your seat accompanied by drinks from our trolley. Weekends On weekends and bank holidays, passengers travelling in the morning will be offered a light breakfast and during the day a choice of sandwiches, crisps and cake, all accompanied by hot and cold drinks. Alcoholic drinks and hot food will be available to purchase from our CaféBAR. CaféBAR For passengers travelling in Standard accommodation, we offer a wide choice of refreshments from our CaféBAR to satisfy your every need. There is a range of delicious sandwiches, hot and cold snacks and cakes as well as a full drinks menu. An at-seat trolley service will also be available on selected services. Alcohol Complimentary alcoholic drinks are served to customers aged over 18 on weekday services. Alcohol is not included as part of our complimentary breakfast offer. Times of offer may vary from train to train. Check online at www.eastcoast.co.uk/welcome for further details. 5 Using this timetable This new timetable shows all train services provided by East Coast as well as local train services that connect conveniently with the times of our trains. For ease of reference, East Coast train services are shown in bold and connecting trains are shown in light type. An “a” next to a connecting location shows the time you will arrive at that station after your journey with us. A “d” next to a connecting location shows the time you will be departing from that station to connect with our train. Unfortunately, it is not possible to delay our trains for late-running connections to our services, as to do so would impact upon the smooth running of the whole network. Likewise, it is not always possible for other train companies to wait at connecting stations. Please refer to page 55 for notes. Disclaimer Timetables and other information are correct at time of going to press. While every effort is made to ensure services operate to the published time, this timetable does not act as a guarantee because circumstances outside of the control of East Coast can sometimes impact on our timetable. We strongly recommend that you check journey times before you travel, especially at weekends. 6 Mondays to Fridays NORTHBOUND London King’s Cross d 0550 0615 0630 0700 0705 Petsd Stevenage 0611 0634 0649 Cambridge d 0515ppooch 0555p at home – You don’t have to leave your Peterborough we let d pets travel free of 0642 0705 0721services, 0745 0751 charge on our Grantham d 0702 0725 0739 as long as they don’t occupy a seat. It’s easy to do – simply go to the “Live Train Times” page on our website at www.eastcoast.co.uk/livetravel or at www.nationalrail.co.uk. If you’re a regular traveller why not download our handy Windows gadget, which will send all the latest train-running information for your chosen station straight to your desktop. Available on Windows 7 and Vista, visit www.eastcoast.co.uk/travel-information for more information and to download the gadget. Or why not create your very own personalised timetable that can be downloaded straight to your PC or emailed to you? Our MyTimetables service is fast, convenient and better for the environment. Simply select your departure and arrival stations, plus the days, dates and travel times that suit you, and we’ll do the rest. You can include any station across the UK rail network. To create your personalised timetable, go to: www.eastcoast.co.uk/mytimetables Making it up to you when things go wrong In the unfortunate event of severe delays while travelling with us, we have a scheme in place to compensate affected passengers. Delay Repay applies to all customers with tickets purchased from East Coast who suffer exceptional delays to their journey. For more information on how this system can help you, please pick up our Passenger’s Charter leaflet from stations or visit our website at: www.eastcoast.co.uk/passengerscharter Delay Repay claim forms are available at most stations or can be downloaded from our website. 3 60 Will engineering works affect my journey? The safety and reliability of train services is a top priority so it is often necessary for Network Rail to carry out essential track maintenance and renewal work. This usually takes place at weekends or on bank holidays, and occasionally on weekdays during early mornings or late evenings. Unfortunately this can affect our timetable, so to minimise disruption as much as we can, we advertise any changes due to planned engineering works up to 12 weeks in advance. Please do ask for details of any engineering work that might affect your journey when booking or look online at: www.eastcoast.co.uk/changes You can also contact National Rail: by phone on the web 08457 48 49 50 www.nationalrail.co.uk 61 4 Information at your fingertips Even when you’re out and about you can stay up to date with East Coast, with SMS, email and Twitter updates. Live updates We can also send you live journey information by email or via SMS. Register online at www.eastcoast.co.uk/travelalert and we’ll either text or email you, whichever you prefer, if there are any changes to your train service. Like to Tweet? Follow us! We update our Twitter feed with news of any changes to our services so you can see instantly if there are any alterations that might affect your journey. We offer Wi-Fi access on board our trains and in our First Class Lounges to help you stay connected on the move. Once your laptop has established a connection and you have registered, you can get online straight away – all from the comfort of your seat. Our Wi-Fi Support Team is here to help if you experience any problems – 5 62 by phone 08451 254 455* by email [email protected] Ticket to ride Buy before you board There are several ways to buy your ticket before you board – either in advance on our website or at our stations and Travel Centres. The earlier you book, the more you’ll save so it makes sense all round. If you board one of our trains without a valid ticket the only ticket you will be able to buy on board will be the full single or full return fare for your journey and you won’t be able to use a Railcard (except a Disabled Persons Railcard). To save yourself the hassle, and to save money, always buy before you board. If you are unable to buy a ticket because the ticket office is closed, or a self-service ticket machine that accepts cash is not available, it will be possible to purchase an alternative ticket on the train from the Train Guard. Ticket office opening times can be found on station posters and online at both www.eastcoast.co.uk and www.nationalrail.co.uk. Advance tickets – what you need to know East Coast Advance tickets are great value for money so it’s little wonder that many of our passengers travel on them. It’s worth remembering, however, that they are only valid on the service that you’ve booked and not transferable to a later train if you’re late. We’d hate you to miss out so please leave plenty of time to get to the station to catch your train. Reserve a seat We automatically reserve you a seat on your chosen service when you book one of our East Coast Advance tickets. For other ticket types, you can also guarantee a seat by asking for a reservation at the time of booking. Advance ticket holders must keep their train ticket and reservation with them at all times, and we recommend that all other tickets holders do the same. Unfortunately we are unable to reserve seats for bookings made after 18.00 the day before travel. 63 6 Shhh, it’s the Quiet Coach… If you’re looking for some peace, then Coach B in Standard accommodation is for you. If you would like to bring more bags or larger items of luggage, please check www.eastcoast.co.uk/luggage or speak with our Customer Relations team: by phone 08457 225 333* Watch your bags! We recommend that you clearly label your luggage and keep an eye on it whenever possible. For personal items, such as laptops, iPods and mobile phones, it’s a good idea to take them with you when you move around the train. For security reasons any unattended property at stations or on board our trains may be removed. 65 8 Please don’t smoke In keeping with UK law, smoking is not allowed anywhere on our trains or at our stations, including open platforms, toilets and immediately outside the entrance. We appreciate your cooperation with this. Early doors We want to get you on your way promptly and safely, so at all our stations we close our train doors one minute before departure. In addition, at London King’s Cross, information about each service will be removed from the information screens on the concourse two minutes before departure. So for a relaxing start to your journey we advise that you arrive at the station in good time. We also recommend that you do not board the train unless you intend to travel. Our staff will be happy to help less able friends and relatives onto the train. Ticket gates Only passengers in possession of a valid ticket may use our services, helping to improve security and make travelling with East Coast a fairer, and more pleasant, experience for everyone. We use automatic ticket gates or manual ticket checks at many of our stations to help us achieve this, so be sure to hang on to your ticket until you’ve left the station completely. 9 66 Connection times If you are changing trains at any one of our stations, please allow plenty of time to make your connection – especially at larger stations, where you may have to change platforms. To help you, we’ve put together a guide to how much time you should allow at each station: London King’s Cross 15 minutes Stevenage 7 minutes Peterborough 8 minutes Newark North Gate 7 minutes Grantham 7 minutes Retford 10 minutes Doncaster 7 minutes Wakefield Westgate 7 minutes Leeds 10 minutes York 8 minutes Darlington 7 minutes Newcastle 8 minutes Glasgow Central 15 minutes Edinburgh Waverley 10 minutes Connecting services may be provided by other train operators. 6710 The Extra Factor Eurostar connections Ooh la la!
