DEDICATED TO THE PRESERVATION OF OUR MANTECA AREA HISTORY
APRIL 14TH PROGRAM NIGHT:
MANTECA S.H.A.R.P.
Seniors helping area residents & Police
On September 3, 1991, the Manteca
S.H.A.R.P. organization was formed as
the first such unit in northern California.
Under the direction of the Manteca Police Department, the organization provides traffic control at accident scenes,
crime scenes, fires, parades and other
city events to free-up the Police Officers
for other important duties. They also
conduct a host of other volunteer duties
which you will learn about at the April
Program Night at the Manteca Museum.
Join us for an interesting presentation
by Manteca S.H.A.R.P. members at
7:00pm at the Museum. Refreshments
and dessert is served following the program. The program is free.

WHAT’S INSIDE
PHOTO
The desire to taste food, dessert,
beverages and win prizes were very
evident as a nice crowd turned out to
do just that on March 13th at the Senior Center. We hear that folks were not
disappointed, even with the rain, as the
efforts at 23 vendor booths offered up
a variety of sampling choices. Thanks
so much to our guests and ticketbuyers, our vendors, raffle-prize contributors, ticket outlets and our museum volunteers, including the JROTC and
INTERACT youth groups who were a
big help this year. Thanks to the Park
Ave. Jam Band and to the City of Manteca for allowing us to use the Senior
Center. More photos inside.

A GRAND HISTORY OF MANTECA SPRECKELS
The annual meeting to elect board directors was complimented by a special program-night, as those in attendance
were presented an interesting historical account of the
Spreckels Sugar Factory, which played a giant role in Manteca’s landscape for over 75 years. A reflection of days goneby was delivered by Mark Abram, Manteca Historical Society
director and treasurer, who also holds the designation as the
last Manteca Spreckels manager charged with the task of disassembling the Manteca plant.
The Museum stage exhibit was changed to honor Spreckels
in conjunction with the Spreckels program. If you haven’t
seen it yet, stop by and take in some Spreckels history. And,
great job Mark, with your presentation, and Q & A.
Thank you to outgoing
board members, and
welcome new directors
Our annual meeting
Dave Winegarden
was held on March 10th
with our board elections taking place just
ahead of a great Spreckels program by
Mark Abram. The following week’s board
meeting included electing our officers for
the 2016-17 fiscal year. Thanks to past
president, Leon Sucht, who led the nominating committee this year, along with
Mark Abram, Mel Picanco and Al Johnson.
Many thanks to outgoing board directors, Evelyn Moore, and Donna Stafford,
(also secretary) who have served the Museum in many capacities. Both ladies are
also museum Docents and plan to continue volunteering in those roles, I believe.
Thank you to Earl Pimentel, our outgoing 2nd Vice President, for his contributions in that role. He will remain on the
board as our Sargeant-at-Arms.
We welcome new board members, Sally
Mendes and Vivian Sarina to our board.
Both have been long-time supporters of
the Manteca Museum and we are pleased
they have agreed to join us as directors.
We also thank officers: Marvin Brocchini, who will serve as 2nd Vice President,
and Sally Mendes, who will serve as our
new Secretary.
I am honored to accept a 3rd term as
the MHS&M board president, serving with
Tommie Gallardo, 1st V.P., Marvin Brocchini, 2nd V.P., Mark Abram, Treasurer,
Sally Mendes, Secretary, John Borders,
Parliamentarian, and Earl Pimentel,
Sargeant-at-Arms.
We also recognize the efforts of museum manager, Clancy Rogers, for his dedication to the Manteca Museum.
Of course we are very pleased to have
the continued support of our membership
and volunteers for the good cause of preserving the Manteca area’s history. Thank
you!

Printed form-envelopes are available at the museum, and
on the museum’s website. Many thanks to contributors for
remembering friends and loved ones with a gift to the Manteca Museum.
Click on the Memorials tab www.themantecamuseum.org,

We recently received this photo from Richard
Davis, MUHS Class of ’62. The photo shows the
cast of the senior class play painted on the back
stage wall, by Dan Malstrom. Richard salvaged
the photo from a negative. Question at hand is:
is this creative work anywhere to be found,
after 54 years?
Thanks for sending in the photo, Richard.
