On September 28th, at Parties in the Park, tribute
was paid to our Olivette residents who volunteer
their time to serve on our boards and
commissions. The council and I thank you for all
that you’ve done to enhance and advance the
quality of life in Olivette. We continue to urge
anyone interested in serving to speak with one of
us regarding how to get involved. Or visit our
website, www.olivettemo.com to see what might
interest you.
“Planting the Right Tree in the Right Spot”, a
seminar conducted by AmerenUE on September
19th, was very informative and timely as we move
from fall into winter. As many are aware,
MAYOR RUTH SPRINGER
subcontractors for Ameren have been in Olivette
trimming tree branches in the right of ways, near
power lines. According to Ameren, they expect to
complete the trimming process in Olivette by the end of the year. Additional
information from the seminar is available on the City’s website.
Work also continues on the Olive/I-170 interchange project. Our City Manager, Mike
McDowell, has weekly meetings with MoDot and the contractor regarding the progress
of the project and as of last week, they expecting a timely completion by early December.
Although all the road work will be finished and the roadways reopened, we will still have
crews in the area doing cleanup and landscaping into the spring of ’08.
The City officially named the Sansone Group as the developer of choice for the parcel
of land at the southwest corner of Olive and I-170. The Sansone Group now has180 days
to negotiate a redevelopment agreement with the City in which the specifics of the
project will be outlined. I will keep you apprised as we move along in the process or you
can visit the City’s website for information as it becomes available.
Finally, the City bids farewell to one of the oldest businesses in our community. On
December 31st, Beckmann Brothers Nursery is closing. Plans by the Beckmann family
to sell the property are underway. Many in our community can point to trees, plants and
bushes in their yards that were purchased at the nursery. Bruce Beckmann has been a
vital part of our community, serving on our Park Board for many years. Our best wishes
go to Bruce Beckmann and his family.

Increment Financing Commission
The City of Olivette is currently accepting applications to fill
remaining vacancies on several Boards, Committees, and
Commissions for the City of Olivette.
n August 14, 2007, the Olivette City Council voted to
designate the Sansone Group as the preferred

Southwest
Olive/Interstate-170 Redevelopment Area in the southwest
quadrant of the Olive Boulevard/Interstate-170

Tax Increment Financing is a financing mechanism to utilize
incremental public revenues to offset redevelopment costs
over time.
Missouri law requires the establishment of a 12-member
Tax Increment Financing Commission to review a TIF
financing proposal and make recommendations regarding
its application to a particular redevelopment project. Six
members of a TIF Commission are appointed by the City of
Olivette City Council. The remaining six members are
appointed by other taxing districts levying property taxes in
the City of Olivette, including school districts and St. Louis
County.
The Olivette City Council is soliciting applications from
Olivette citizens and business owners to represent the City
on the TIF Commission that will be established to review the
TIF financing proposal for the Greenway Pointe project.

Police Chief’s Corner
As the Holiday Season approaches, the men and women
of the Olivette Police Department would like to wish you a
Happy Holiday Season and a Healthy 2008.
Below are some holiday crime prevention tips that we
would like to share with you:
• Be sure to lock your doors and windows when leaving your
home, even for brief periods of time. If you have a security
alarm, make sure you activate it.
• Always secure your valuables, and never leave items such
as pocketbooks, wallets, keys, cell phones etc. unattended,
even for brief periods of time.
• Do not display holiday gifts where they can be seen from
windows, doorways or other openly viewable areas.
• Be cautious of strangers soliciting for charitable
donations. Ask for identification, how the donated funds
will be used, etc.
• When you go out for the evening, be sure to turn on the
lights and a radio or television so your residence appears
to be occupied.
• Do not leave boxes from TVs, VCR, Computers, etc. out at
the curb for trash pick up. Break them down.
• Record all serial numbers and mark
valuables with an identification
number.
• Carry your purse under your arm,
with the flap turned into your body.
• Be sure to lock your vehicles, and
never leave valuables in sight while
parked, even when in your driveway
• Park in well lit areas, and always be
aware of your surroundings.
The Olivette Police Department
Wishes You a Safe
and Happy Holiday Season.

RICK KNOX
“To Protect & Serve”
If you have any non-emergency questions related to this
safety advisory, please feel free to contact the Olivette Police
Department at (314) 645-3000.
Partnering With the Olivette Police Department
O
ver the years, the residents and the business
community have helped the Olivette Police
Department solve several crimes, and have made the
department aware of situations that could have negative
impact on the community. Our community members serve
as important partners with the Olivette Police Department,
and as such, the Police Department has been actively
searching for new ways to open the lines of communication
with the community.
Recently, the Police Department began implementation of
several new programs to accomplish these goals. Residents
are now able to receive information, and offer information
to the police department, in several new ways. Depending
upon the location and severity of the offense, we
communicate with residents by utilizing a tip
hotline, an automated calling system, and an email address crime watch broadcast.
Our tip hotline is an avenue for residents to
give information pertaining to crimes that are
currently under investigation. It can also be
used for reporting suspicious activity. The
phone number is 314-983-5252. Callers can
be anonymous or may identify themselves
for future contact. Note: This hotline should not
be used for crimes in progress or ones that have just
occurred. To report these problems, citizens should
call either 911 or 314-645-3000.
The automated calling system will be used
sparingly, but will inform citizens of serious
crime in the area, as well as provide weather
alerts or important information pertaining
4
to the City of Olivette. This broadcast can be specified to
neighborhoods or businesses, and the information can be
sent out by telephone (voice message) or text message (email).
The e-mail portion of this communication serves as a twoway line of communication. We recently emailed several
subdivision trustees about car thefts that were repeatedly
happening in residents’ driveways. This alert was a successful
use of our e-mail system. In addition, citizens may also send
their comments or concerns to Olivettecrimewatch
@olivettemo.com.
In order to implement the new lines of communication
noted above, the Olivette Police Department has established
an emergency database containing information about our
community members. In order to participate in the new
communications, residents must provide contact
information to the Olivette Police Department to be entered
into the database. This database will only be used by the
Olivette Police Department, and the information will stay
within our system.
Residents are encouraged to provide the Olivette Police
Department with their names, addresses, home and cell
phone numbers as well as their e-mail addresses, and
participate in the new services being provided by the Police
Department. To participate, please supply your contact
information to Sergeant Craig Schneider at 983-5206, or via
e-mail at [email protected]. (Those who have
already submitted information need not register again.)
As always, thank you for your cooperation and support.
The Olivette Police Department will continue to improve
ways to partner with the residents and businesses of Olivette.
Fire Chief’s Corner
A
FIRE CHIEF
ROBIN JOBE
ccording to statistics, the
number of fires and fire
related deaths rise sharply
during
the
holiday
season.
Gatherings of family and friends can
mean an increase in cooking activity,
which is the leading cause of home
fires.
In addition, alcohol
consumption tends to increase this
time of year and is cited as a
contributing factor in many fire
related deaths. Add candles, holiday
decorations and heating equipment
to the mix and the potential for
disaster is great.
You can help protect your home and your family from fire
by following the simple, common sense safety tips noted
below, provided by the Olivette Fire Department:
Cooking: Unattended cooking is the leading cause of
kitchen fires. Wear tight-fitting or rolled-up sleeves when
cooking and keep all combustible materials a safe distance
from the stove.
Alcohol: Cooking or smoking while under the influence
of alcohol can be deadly. Keep a close eye on any drinkers in
your household and make sure all cigarettes are properly
extinguished and the stove is off before going to bed.
Do you know when to change the batteries in your smoke
alarms?
To ensure your smoke alarms work when you need them, change
your batteries twice a year.
Install a new battery of the proper type and never use
rechargeable batteries.
On Sunday, November 4th, we moved our clocks back. As a
reminder, when you change your clock, change your batteries too.
If you haven’t already done so, please do this today. It could
save you and your family.
Winter Weather
With winter approaching, residents are reminded of the
need to avoid parking on streets during a snow, ice or
freezing rain event. Parking on streets whenever there has
been an accumulation of snow of two (2) inches or more, or
ice or freezing rain, within the City of Olivette is prohibited.
This requirement is supported by City Code. Fines are
assessed when violation of the code provision occur.
Please help keep Olivette safe by not parking your vehicles
on the street during inclement weather. The City of Olivette
appreciates your cooperation.
Candles: Keep candles in a sturdy holder away from
children, pets and combustible materials. Snuff them out
before leaving the room.
Christmas trees: Buy a fresh tree and keep the base of the
trunk in water at all times. Discard any broken or frayed sets
of lights. Lit candles should never be placed on or near the
Christmas tree. When the tree starts to dry out, it's time to
throw it away.
Space heaters: Keep portable heaters at least one meter
away from anything that can burn--including you. Don't use
your heaters to dry shoes or clothes.
Heating appliances: Remember to have your furnace
inspected each year by a licensed technician. Your chimney
should also be cleaned and inspected annually to prevent
problems that may cause a build-up of carbon monoxide. A
carbon monoxide alarms will alert you to the presence of
this deadly gas.
Smoke alarms: It is the law to have working smoke alarms.
The fire service recommends you install one on every level
of your home and outside all sleeping areas. Test your
alarms regularly and change the batteries at least twice a
year.
Home Escape Plan: If a fire does occur in your home,
everyone must get out as quickly as possible. Develop a fire
escape plan and practice it with your entire family.
Looking for that special gift for family and
friends?
What better way to show you care than to give a smoke alarm or
fire extinguisher. Fire fighters know that battery-operated smoke
alarms are life-savers. Every level of the
home should have a smoke alarm.
In fire extinguishers, a multipurpose dry chemical type is a
wise choice. Make sure the fire
extinguisher is kept in an
accessible place and the owner
knows how to use it properly.
Every home, boat, camper and
trailer should have a fire
extinguisher.
This holiday season, give a gift to
save a life.

Why Volunteer?
from Olivette In Bloom
"Why volunteer?” you ask.
Susan Grossman says
- It’s been fun for me. Fun to make new friends in my
community, fun to get dirty, fun to learn and fun to plant
flowers and watch them grow. Here’s how I became involved
as a volunteer for Olivette in Bloom.
About ten years ago we moved to Olivette from University
City. I had lived in University City for over twenty years and
had been a volunteer for U. City in Bloom. When I saw a
notice in the Olivette Advisory requesting volunteers for
Olivette in Bloom I called right away and they signed me up
to work at one of the garden work days.
Since then my involvement with Olivette in Bloom has
evolved quite dramatically. I started as a weeder/planter and
just loved the satisfaction I felt when I drove by the gardens
that I helped to plant. One of the volunteer garden
designers said to me, "You should look into becoming a
Master Gardener through the Missouri Botanical Gardenyou would love it" so I did.
Before long I was asked to be a
designer for Veterans’
Garden on the corner
of Olive and Dielman.
With some reluctance
I agreed and faced
many challenges, not
the least of which was
MoDOT installing a
crosswalk for pedestrians.
Despite
whatever
happens, the gardens
seem to thrive. As people
drive by on our workdays they
honk, wave and thank us for our
hard work. Our newest garden
at the Olivette Community
Center now has a wheel chair
accessible walkway so that it can
be used by the elderly at the St.
Elizabeth Daycare Center.
In January of 2006 I became president of Olivette in
Bloom which has been interesting and exciting as well. We
now have a spring plant exchange for our volunteers and a
fall volunteer appreciation party. We just completed our 3rd
Annual Mum sale. In 2008 we will sponsor Green Thumb
103, our community educational lecture series which is free
and open to the public. My term will come to an end in
January which will vacate the spot for someone else to
contribute his or her ideas as we move
into our seventh year.
Since we are exclusively a volunteer
organization we are always looking for
new helpers. There is room for all
kinds of people whether you like to
garden or not. If you would like to
become involved with us
please call 872-8897 or visit
our
website
at
olivetteinbloom.org where
we can be contacted by email.
